MNP is a service which will allow users to change their service providers without the need to change their numbers. Now, after a series of delays, it is set to arrive on September 20, 2009 in most of the cities and few states while others will have to wait till March 20, 2010.

Yesterday, TRAI revealed the draft norms that will bind the MNP service as well as users gaining from it. This is what you need to know if you’ll be going for it as soon as its available in September.

For Customers:

  1. Customer needs to complete at least 90 days before applying for another operator
  2. Customer needs to give an undertaking to his current operator that he wishes to switch to another service operator
  3. Customers will obviously charged a fee for doing this. Though no fee has been confirmed for now, expect it to be around Rs. 300
  4. Post-paid users need to show a proof of no outstanding payments to the new operator

For Operators:

  1. An operator needs to carry out checks like identity verification etc. and should be completed within 5 days
  2. Operators need to inform customers about the exact time and date when the porting will happen
  3. A new operator is not obliged to pay any outstanding payments of the ported customer to his original service provider
  4. In case of a no service period during porting, the new operator has to send a list of messages and missed calls during the same period

HTC Magic

Here it is fellas. As expected, HTC and Airtel have announced Magic, India’s first widely awaited Android phone. You know, I am excited about its arrival but on the other hand, somewhat sad too because of its price. Airtel and authorized HTC resellers will be selling for a whopping Rs. 29,900. Ok, it may not sound more comparing iPhone’s cheapest model but Magic’s price could be costlier than iPhone 3G when operators decide to decrease the price in the wake of iPhone 3GS launch in August.

Anyways, keeping the iPhone-Android comparison aside, the good things Magic features are free data access of up to 100MB for the first six months for Airtel users, different Airtel applications, 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, 3,2MP camera, Exchange support and much more.

It seems Airtel has struck a double deal. First the iPhone and now they are being tagged as an exclusive operator for HTC’s Android phone that will be unveiled today, which for the record will also be India’s long awaited Android offering.

The price is expected to be around Rs. 25,000 and I think it is in line with iPhone 3G’s price that will be after the launch of iPhone 3GS. Let’s hope HTC releases Magic and Airtel has decent data plans to support the phone.

The Nokia N97 was launched in India and the operator partnering the launch was none other than Vodafone. The two companies have come together to introduce the new age phone which will lock horns against the iPhone and its likes. The added advantage for a user buying the bundled Vodafone offering are as follows::

  • Free data plan for 3 months of browsing the internet
  • Exclusive access to ‘The Groove’, a widget that keeps you updated on the latest happenings

As for the phone, you get a full touch screen phone with accelerometer and handwriting recognition. In addition, the phone is equipped with a 5MP Carl Zeiss camera, 32GB storage capacity which can expanded to 48GB via microSD card, A-GPS and 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.

All of this is expected to cost you a whopping Rs.35,000, however, the prices haven’t been confirmed.

BSNL’s GSM project is facing quite some issues in setting up the necessary telecom infrastructure. As per the standard process, the government owned telecom giant attracted proposals from various telecom equipment manufacturers for its Rs 30,000 crore GSM project. The big players in this race were: Ericsson, Huawei, NSN, Alcatel Lucent and ZTE. The bidding process was going smoothly until the Finnish telecom equipment maker; Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) was rejected by BSNL’s bidding panel.

NSN’s proposal was rejected because it had not submitted an experience certificate for the North Zone. (Experience certificate is required to certify operating experience in each of the four Indian Zones). Now, NSN has shot off a letter to BSNL claiming that the PSU has unfairly singled out NSN from the bidding process. NSN said that the certificate submitted for other zones was relevant for the North zone as well; in addition, the letter also said that if BSNL had to disqualify its bid, then it should have also rejected Ericsson’s bid since the latter had allegedly not given a separate certificate.

BSNL has referred this dispute to an integrity panel approved by the Central Vigilance. Two former Chief Election Commissioners — Mr T.S. Krishnamurthy and Mr B.B. Tandon — are the members on this panel.

Bharti Airtel is on a roll; last month it achieved the 100 million subscriber mark and became the first Indian telecom operator to have such a huge consumer base. A few weeks later, it was awarded the best telecom service provider in Asia-Pacific by Frost and Sullivan. Today, it announced another achievement, which is again first in the category. It became the first ever Indian telecom operator to cross 5 million subscribers in a Metro circle, and we are referring to Delhi/NCR out here.

According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Bharti Airtel had maintained its top position in the GSM-space and has a market share of 32.48 per cent. The last one million subscribers of these five million have been added in only 13 months. On this achievement, Bharti Airtel’s CEO for Delhi & NCR ( Mobile Services), Shashi Arora said,” This is a testimony to the faith and trust that the customers of the Delhi & NCR have reposed on Airtel and we would like to take this opportunity to thank every single one.”

Airtel and Vodafone, who jointly account for over 170 million of the 400 million cell phone users in the India, are all set to bring Apple’s latest iPhone, called the iPhone 3Gs to India. Apple which has exclusive tie-ups with Bharti and Vodafone has confirmed that their latest gadget will hit the Indian shores this August, however, they still haven’t given a word about its launch date or the pricing.

As per Apple’s website, Airtel is the Indian telecom carrier, authorised to unlock the iPhone. Now, the golden question which comes up is, will Airtel sell unlocked iPhones? Maybe we’ll get the answer once the iPhone 3Gs launches in India.

A total of 8.3m subscribers were added to the wireless segment taking the total base to 403.66m.

Airtel again led the pack in April gaining in excess of 2.8m subscribers while Vodafone trailed behind at 2.5m.

On the other hand, government owned BSNL and MTNL saw few additions to the tune 4.5 lakh and 45,553 respectively.
