Flickr is an old resource and it was a noticeable relic of 1990’s web design for a long time. However, the times changed and at last Yahoo decided to redesign its most popular web resource. First of all, the updates touched visual design, social concept, space and mobile opportunities. The main idea consisted in optimization of picture management and viewing – as per Flickr VP Brett Wayn: “Everything that we’ve done in this new redesign has been about putting the photo front and center”. Let’s review the particular changes and see what’s the matter.

An old 1990’s-style look with lot whitespace and metadata was exchanged with a flat design UI as a basis. Developers follow the trend. Flickr was filled with colors, primarily thanks to a changeable cover. The update is also focused on improvement of the social elements, which now take a considerable part of the screen.

Finally, Flickr put pictures on the black background as the users asked for years. Black background for photography websites is a trend for a long time – it creates a good contrast and outlines the images. Together with renewed way of scrolling streams – infinite scrolling – it’s a good step to present the pictures more suitably.

Flickr expanded storage space to 1 Terabyte. Impressive, isn’t it? Sure, it’s a perfect marketing trick: 1 terabyte sounds way better than boring unlimited storage. But in fact “1 Terabyte” equals “unlimited”, because you’ll need several decades to fill your space with photos.

Adaption to mobile web is an obvious thing for web developers since the end of 2000’s. And it’s good that Flickr got it at least this year.
