"Purple-licious" has enjoyed its debut at the Spring Online Needle Work Show - April 18 - 23rd in the Dinky Dyes "booth". Take a look and see the other designs we have to offer: Online Needleworkshow

In another week or two it will be available in shops so get ready for this luscious design worked in Dinky Dyes silks: Kirribilli, Jindabyne, Native Plum, Cabernet and Fantasy Blues. The design is embellished with Mill Hill Petite glass beads in Victorian Gold and decorated with some deliightfully unique back stitching.

Ever since I released Coffee Compendium a bit over a year ago, the tea drinkers of the world have been asking for a companion design. So ... here it is! Tempting Teas!!

The details of “Tempting Teas”

Size 278 x 310 stitches

Fabric used on model is 40 ct Zweigart Newcastle, “Days Gone By”

Floss used is Crescent Colours Cotton with xref to Dinky Dyes Silk and DMC.

Size on 40 ct over 2: 151/2” w x 14” h

On 28 ct over 1: 11”w x 10”h

This design can be worked over 1 thread of fabric.

Coffee Compendium

Days Gone By linen fabric is a luscious, antique looking fabric but is highly variegated. For that reason, I explain in the chart that if your piece of hand-dyed fabric has fairly dramatic, blotchy color changes, you may find that a few words are not as visible when they happen to be stitched in particular areas. If the floss suggested for that word is light and the fabric is light in that same area, feel free to substitute with a darker shade of floss, or even outline the word to make it more visible. Also, variegated floss has light and dark sections, so another tactic is to deliberately choose the part of the strand that best works on a lighter section of fabric.

The first several charts printed mention, as a cross reference to Crescent, a Dinky Dyes pale gold called Topaz 46, which should be 49 (my typo). On later charts, in place of Topaz, I am suggesting Aussie Dawn 144. You can use whichever pleases you as this design will truly be an individual work of art when you complete it.

Cheerful Up Valentine for late January release

A Cheeful-Up Valentine just for your Special Someone:

When was a child, I used to say this to my mother. I don't remember saying it, of course, but when I grew older, she reminded me more than once. I suppose it was one of those cute things children say... but it recently came to mind as just the thing for a Valentine. Who cannot use a little "cheerful up"?

As I was just posting over on my blog that I was in a red and white mood recently and since I've not designed a heart previously, I thought this might be a delicious change. The blog shows you some stitching in progress but here you see the finished design.

A Facebook friend asked about the button border on the antique version. The buttons were a midnight inspiration since I had no heart-shaped frame and wanted something different. The button boxes in my sewing room are filled with the collecting efforts of both my mother and myself - for many decades.

Note: The ‘antique’ model was trimmed my personal collection of antique buttons. A nice "frame" can be created using old buttons that bear some family memories. Simply arrange them as shown around the stitched heart, which has been closely trimmed – to about ¾” from the stitching. Seal the cut edges with fabric glue. Then either stitch the buttons in place or carefully hot glue them in the desired arrangement.

Here it is on pure white linen - a traditional look.

Cheerful Up Valentine will be on the way to distributors by the first of this coming week. It will be in shops by the end of January.

Here are the details on “Cheerful-Up Valentine” – two versions appear on chart cover. You can choose which one, or both, to stitch. Size 149 x 106 stitches.

· Fabric: Zweigart Edinburgh linen, 40 ct Days Gone By; alternate model is worked on White Zweigart 36 ct.

The "Patient Stitcher” has a challenging border reminiscent of an English Flower Garden puzzle.

The Medallion Underlay is included as a separate page in the chart and can be stitched as a doily-like design or as individual motifs on fobs, gift tags or small ornaments.

“Patience”, a mini companion, is the first in an ongoing series of little virtues designs. I've worked the little one all in blue and plan to frame it in twigs from my apple tree. It would make a simply precious pin cushion, too!

“Crimson Cardinal”

second in the series of bird designs. Size 89 x 88 stitches Model is worked on Weeks’ Dye Works 30 ct Sky linen over 2 with 2 strands of floss and uses Gloriana silk, 5 colors with cross reference of Dinky Dyes. I suggest Gloriana - 1 skein each for a redder, brighter bird OR Dinky Dyes – 1 skein each for a softer, rosier bird. Specialty Stitches: straight/ back stitch, eyelets, and 3 French Knots. This design can be stitched over 1 thread of fabric. There is blending of 2 colors if stitched in Dinky Dyes. If color blending is done, I suggest a little looser weave, such as 18-25 ct. ***

“Peppermint Pig”, chart includes several motifs which are suitable as Victorian Christmas ornaments. Size 207 x 207. Model uses 40 ct Weeks Dye Works “Angel Hair”, # 1109 over 2. Floss suggested is Crescent Colours cotton in 3 colors, with cross reference of Dinky Dyes silk. Design contains full cross stitch and straight/back stitch with 2 French Knots; it can be stitched over 1 thread of fabric.

History of the “Peppermint Pig” - In many cultures over the centuries, pigs were considered to be good luck, and owning pigs signified financial well-being. In the Victorian era, a little holiday tradition began as a way of wishing that the coming New Year would bring only good things. A little pig made of pink peppermint- flavored candy was presented to all attending of a family’s holiday dinner. The peppermint pig was then shattered with a little mallet, and each diner shared a fragment of the candy as a symbol of good luck to come.

“Giovanni's Alphabet”

The newest Tempting Tangles Designs - June 2012

Inspiration for this design was provided by artist and needlework designer, Giovanni Ostaus, who created his constructed-style alphabet as well as his other magnificent lace designs and presented them to the world in his “La Vera Perfittione del Disegno”, (The True Perfection of Design) in 1561, self-published in Venice, Italy.

The chart format Giovanni used set a standard for design lay-out using grids or squares. The unique reticello lace alphabet has been re-created here with some changes to make it suitable for cross stitch. These large letters along with the hunt scene, and the wide band of reticello lace-like loops, eyelets, “picots” and other geometric shapes (created with back-stitches and straight stitches) make this a truly unique design. You will find instructions within the chart to aid you in creating the various specialty stitch work, too, including Bargello, Zigzag stitch, Satin, Stem, Algerian Eye

Design size (13 pages) is 270 w x 356 stitches h; finished on 28 ct over 1 is 9 2/3” w x 12 ¾”

We Are One - for June 1 release

Happy upcoming 4th of July!!!

Even though the 4th of July is a month or so away, I was thinking about what it means to me. This design reflects my belief that even with all our various and different histories, religions, skin colors, interests or ways of thinking, we are all one here on this our only Earth and in this time.

I hope that as you stitch this design you will think about our "Oneness" and realize no matter where we live, we are indeed ONE. We are Humanity.

We Are One will be out to shops very near to June 1. This is a fairly quick stitch. :-) It took me only 20 days with designing too. You can see more of the WIP pix on my blog <<click here

The Cat is Out of the Bag

I just had bit of a surprise a few minutes ago when a little bird told me that Marty at "Stitch and Frog" had found my secrets out, and was so excited that she shared pix of my two newest with the world. The original source was Dinky Dyes Facebook page, and I admit I was apparently clueless on how lightening-fast news travels -- until now. So, with wide open eyes, and an equal amount of excitement, I will now share the "Scoop" on my newest designs with you.

***** "Panoply of Pods 'n' Puffs" is the third design in the "Panoply Series". It is 119 x 173 stitches, full crosses and lots of blackwork in stunning pastels, sprinkled with a few beads and even fewer French Knots. It is stitched on Wichelt's #7696 Black Chocolate linen, 28 ct, over 2. The finished size is 8 1/2 x 12 1/3". The model is stitched on Wichelt linen, Black Chocolate #7696, 28 ct over 2 with 7 Gloriana silks in stunning pastels. The finished size is 8 1/2 x 12 1/3".

***** "Sampling in Scarlets" is a companion to the previously released sampler called "Needleworker's Abecedarius". Sampling in Scarlets 226 x 360 stitches, mostly full crosses with a few straight stitches. It is stitched on Zweigart Dublin linen, 26 count undyed or natural, over 1 with a selection of six Dinky Dyes fabulous red silks. Finished size is 8 3/4 x 13 7/8".

Both designs will be released at the Needlework Show later this month - please visit Dinky Dyes for information. Shortly after that week, shops who order through Hoffman will see these designs on their site. You can see close up snippets of both these designs on my blog. This playful little Tree Top Birth Sampleris 162 x 161 will be in shops by the end of January 2012.
This design used Sullivan's cotton floss,and is stitched on Weeks Dye Works linen, "Tin Roof". I used 40 count and stitched over 2, so can sincerely say thank goodness for the magnifier on my Daylight lamp!

If you have any babies on the way, or any new or even not so new babies who need their very own sampler, this might be the sampler for you!

Notice I've put my daughter's birth date on this model -and she is not so new at all, but still my darling babe.

Tea Time - a cute design for your kitchen!

Tea Time is a favorite with many of us. My friend Rebecca presented me with the ornate T in the center and of course, ideas began to form as I did my "wordsmith" fun around the edges. What a darling gift this would be - and twigs are available just about everywhere. ;-)

Design size is 117 x 132, 5 pages, including the how-to on the twig hanger.

Specialty stitches: Algerian Eyelet, Satin Fan, back and straight stitch but this design can be stitched over 1 thread of fabric if the count is not too fine. Finished size: stitched on 32 ct over 2, with 2 strands floss, finished size is 7-1/2x 8-1/3”;On 36 ct over 2, finished size is 6-2/3 x 7-1/2”

The model is stitched on Zweigart’s Belfast 32 ct Willow Green with both Splendor and Gloriana Silks, with a DMC equivalents listed.

'Moonlit Skaters' of the WaterMeadows Seasons series

The design size is 196 x 198, chart is 11 pages and contains some specialty stitches: Smyrna cross, padded satin stitch, satin stitch fans plus fractional stitches – all with instructions. The model is stitched on Jobelan Light Grey 28 ct. using DMC floss. It should be available to local and online needlework shops by mid to late September.

'Wintery Moon' - in the round

Moonlit Skaters is the third release in the WaterMeadows Seasons series. In February, we released "Wintery Moon" - a round version of the winter skating scene with WaterMeadows Castle in the background, pictured right.

In August, we released "Autumn Nodding", a fall scene with the little village of WaterMeadows in the background beyond the woodland creatures, farm animals, vineyards and golden fields of grain.

The story book style of these two designs brings childhood memories to mind, at least for me, where the crisp scent of autumn fills the air, along with flying leaves of red and gold. These two will soon be available in your LNS.

It's time to get stitching these colorful, seasonal pieces. "Autumn Nodding" may seem familiar as it is an adaptation of the WaterMeadows Seasons panels. This design shows off a beautiful fall dawn, or is that a sunset? This design has full, half and quarter stitches, diamond eyelet, open herringbone, and back stitch.

"Jumpin' Jack Frost" is a picture story of a little lad's delight as he anticipates a jump into that big pile of colorful leaves. The paint bucket at the top bears his name - Jack Frost. For those who are a little averse to Halloween, simply leave off the tiny jack-o-lantern. This chart is full cross stitches, and some back stitching, two French Knots.

New Release for July 2011 - Adam's Menagerie

I've completed stitching Adam's Menagerie! Size is 198x200 stitches.

This menagerie of little creatures will make you smile as you stitch. The critters include a hedgehog, an ostrich, a red squirrel, quail, a pair of chameleons hiding in the bottom corners, tiny hummingbirds and a leopard hidden up in the tree - plus many others!
Adam's Menagerie will be a delightful design to stitch on upcoming winter evenings. The Genesis verse 2:19 tells the story of how Adam named the newly created animals and bird in the Garden of Eden.

Wouldn't one of these little animals look cute stitched on a pocket or the edge of a collar?

The model was stitched with DMC on the Wichelt Beach Walk 32 ct linen. #65282 - similar to 524 DMC light grey green. As in all my charts, this one includes instructions for specialty stitches which are petite stitch and Algerian eye.

This design will be available for shops to order by the end of July.

Delft Wedding Sampler Released!

Recently, I was dusting my collection of pretty heirlooms my mother had passed on to me many years ago. I had the idea to use some of those to create a Delft Wedding Sampler, knowing that June is the traditional wedding month. The little boy and girl, originally Delft salt and pepper shakers, offer tokens of love in the form of a long stemmed rose and a valentine inscribed with a tiny word that says it all. "LOVE".

This design, 171x171, is a pretty one to stitch and give both as a wedding and anniversary gift. There is an alphabet included for those necessary initials and date.

The Gentle Art Sampler Threads with their lovely variations in blues add to the theme of Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue - a classic which dates from the Victorian Era. Make this design one of the heirlooms you pass on to those you love.

Liberty For All - 193x233 - This antique reproduction-style sampler has been sent to your LNS, just in time for Fourth of July stitching!

Flavors of Americana and Patriotism couldn't be more vibrant in this rich red and blue band sampler. Included are sections of Assisi work to show off the delicate fruited and flowering vines. Complete with tiny, cracked Liberty Bill. Full and half stitch, back stitch, and Assisi bands with Algerian Eyelet border.

Model was stitched on Wichelt's natural light brown linen, 32 ct over 2 threads using Hand-Dyed Fibers silks Quince 1413 and Maggie's Tears 2349. The finished size if stitched over 2 threads of fabric fits on a fat quarter at 12-1/8 x 14-5/8h inches.

First Light - size 109x109 - This miniature was designed as a companion piece to Creation. The model shown here, is worked with 1 strand of floss over 1 thread of 27 count light khaki Jobelan.

In addition to full and half stitches, this design contains Algerian Eye, a single Border Flower, and fan stitches created with simple straight lines. It is charted in DMC for easy translation into the floss of your choice.

First Light is ideal for cross stitch or needlepoint. If stitched over 1 thread of fabric, it becomes a dainty of miniature - ornament size. The design has instructions for stitching over 2, which allows more detail to be worked into the lettering. An alphabet is included for personalizing your work. As I wrote the other day, I have been invited to participate in several issues of Just Cross Stitch Christmas - both the ornament issues and the fall issue with a profile. I am happy to say I have finally completed the designing and stitching of the two ornaments for JCS.

Panoply of Peacocks WIP

Just a wee beginning of Panoply of Peacocks. I thought I would stitch both in Crescent Colours silk and cotton - one for me and one for my daughter. The colors are a little different between the two sets of flosses, naturally so that will be an interesting comparison. I'm anxious to see the Dinky Dyes silks as well and find a set of colors that give that same peacock look.

I had a certain idea for the colors until I researched what peacocks actually look like up close! There is a lot of green! I cut back on the green since the teals are one of my favorite colors...

I am stitching this on 27 count white Linda, pending some pearl grey lugana for the other one. This design can be stitched over 1 or 2 as desired. The chart tells you how to accomplish that. Since my walls are getting VERY full, I am more prone to smaller pieces now, unless as my husband suggested, I start decorating the ceiling!
