Steve Tendon has been invited to talk at the Finance and Investments Forum, 2016 to be held at The Laguna Suite in SmartCity (Malta) on Friday June 17, 2016.

Steve will deliver a talk entitled “Blockchain: The unstoppable disruption of the financial services industry”. Building on his keen interest in organizational performance, Steve will explore how the Blockchain technologies can dramatically improve the performance in the global financial services sector.

The Blockchain has the potential to reduce friction, lower costs, boost growth, and increase transparency for all operators in financial services. The blockchain will collapse settlement times, reduce or eliminate the need for trust, and remove all intermediaries and arbiters of access to financial services. The technology will promote new models of peer-to-peer financing. The increased transparency will affect anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) on-boarding processes. Insurance and actuarial risk management will be based on more accurate and reliable data. Accounting will be able to produce real-time and transparent audits and financial reporting. Regulators will be able to better scrutinize financial actions of all economic agents.

The Blockchain can boost growth by making financial services accessible to the world’s 2 billion people who actually are un-banked or under-banked. This will allow for strong economic development in the poorest countries, and provide a real alternative to economic migration.

Ultimately, the Blockchain has the potential to increase performance of the economy on a global scale, leading to higher wealth and prosperity in a more equitable fashion.

Steve Tendon has been invited to talk at the Careers and Education Fair, 2015 to be held at SmartCity Malta on April 17, 2015.

Steve Tendon will deliver a talk entitled “The Coming Global Human Capital Crisis, How it will Affect You and Your Career.” The thesis is that the increased levels of automation, with artificial intelligence, big data, computer vision, there will be massive layoffs in all traditional fields of employment, including white collars and management functions.

Only the highest skilled knowledge workers will be in demand, and demand will be far higher than the supply. Thus a strategy for coping with the imbalance is to strive for hyper-performance. Both as an employer, who needs to deliver ever increasing knowledge-based products and services, as well as an employee, who needs to work in collaborative knowledge-based environments, mastering hyper-performance becomes a critical skill.

What’s the difference [between productivity and performance]? (4:10)

Is there a technical difference [between productivity and performance]? Or is it just semantics? (4:40)

What cause that evolution in your thought process and your practice? (5:20)

Is this driven by making the people better, by making the process better? How do you get to these levels of hyper-performance? (8:44)

What you are describing is a key dynamic leader and then this Unity of Purpose around that leader. Is that something that organizations can learn? Is that something that they have to go out and find? And then what happens when someone like Taiichi Ohno or Steve Jobs leaves, dies? (10:30)

Tell us what you mean by the word “Flow?” What does that mean? Is that creating projects and stamping projects out one after the other, kind of a production? Or is it broader, like product or oganizational oriented? (15:17)

Can an organization achieve hyper-productive performance if any one of those flows are out of sync? (19:10)

Are those the concepts […] the core of the book? The message of the book? (23:56)

Who would you suggest actually go out and buy the book? Is this a book for CIOs? Is it a book for CEOs? or team leaders in IT organizations? (26:38)

If you woke up tomorrow morning and had the power to change any two things that affect the idea of hyper-productive knowledge work performance, what would those two things be? and why? (30:00)

On November 20, 2014 at the ceremony of the UK Agile Awards 2014, William Hill Online, a major player in the online betting industry, won the UK award for “Best Use of Agile in the Private Sector.”

Steve Tendon – together with Michael Short, Darren Wilmshurst and other consultants from Radtac Ltd – helped William Hill Online in their agile transformation, wherein the company put huge focus not only on adhering to the principles of the Agile Manifesto, but also on deliberately seeking performance innovation strategies.

This is one of the first cases of the TameFlow Approach being used in the iGaming sector.

Focus on performance produced tangible business results. Besides the company’s winning the Agile award, the product development unit saw some impressive performance improvement numbers in its pilot within the “Trafalgar Project.” Just a few weeks after adopting the TameFlow Approach there was a measured 70% reduction in time to market and a 240% increase in productivity (i.e. amount of valued work items delivered per unit of time), without any additional investment in head counts or additional resources.

The increased performance further allowed the company to actually focus on product/service innovation, as the extra capacity gained through the performance breakthrough could be channeled towards developing a whole pipeline of new projects. This is another example of how performance innovation delivers real business value, as it enables conventional product/service innovation.

Details about the award are described in this Press Release.

Steve Tendon’s book Hyper–Productive Knowledge Work Performance, The TameFlow Approach and Its Application to Scrum and Kanban has finally been published.

About the book

As much of the work performed in various industries and professions by knowledge workers is intangible,
productivity has been a mystery to most business executives, managers, and team leaders. This unique reference
shows how to effectively manage knowledge work, lead knowledge workers to a state of hyperproductivity, and
build a hyperproductive knowledge work organization. This is accomplished by applying the TameFlow Approach
to the four flows of organizational performance (information, psychology, work, and finance) to substantially
improve performance of each, and create an organization capable of producing spectacular operational and
financial results.

The book:

Reprinted foreword follows.

Foreword By Robert K. Wysocki, PhD, CEO EII Publications, LLC

Steve Tendon and Wolfram Müller have written a remarkable treatise: Hyper-Productive Knowledge-Work Management: The TameFlow Perspective and Application to Scrum and Kanban. This book opens a door that leads to improved productivity, and better management practices. Successful application of the TameFlow Approach brings about what is referred to as a state of “hyper-productivity” where an organization acquires a delivery capacity that is comparable to that of competitors several times larger. A key success factor for a hyper-productive organization is the ability to adopt empirical and experimental practices, with short-term planning, incremental budgeting, rapid execution, and short feedback loops. Practical examples of the TameFlow management approach are given in, but not limited to, the field of software development. This book focuses on creating business value through knowledge-work in contemporary information-based organizations.

The first part of the book focuses on management concepts. Lead author, Steve Tendon, examines and deconstructs the conceptual foundations of a hyper-productive organization. While at Borland International, he first encountered and experienced organizational hyper-productivity. Later an independent study by AT&T Bell Laboratories revealed astounding levels of performance by one of the company’s software development teams. To this day it remains the most productive project ever documented in the field of software engineering. Reflecting on the insights gained from his experience and on the findings of the case study, Steve was inspired to devise the TameFlow management approach.

TameFlow is not a methodology in itself, but rather an approach that can be superimposed onto any preexisting value-creating management practice. As one of the key aspects of TameFlow, this idea of superimposability is very powerful. TameFlow centers around Pattern Theory, which Steve uses to analyze and deconstruct both popular and lesser-known approaches. He then remixes and combines the observed productivity patterns with his own concepts to create the conditions that generate hyper-productive levels of performance. Despite the superficial appearance, this recombination of patterns is not a mash-up of different methodologies; rather it is a more powerful configuration, due to the generative nature of patterns. This results in a cross-pollination of elements from different methodologies which enable performance improvement by several orders of magnitude.

Attaining and sustaining a hyper-productive state within an organization is a complex undertaking. Achieving hyper-productivity comes from both top-down support and bottom-up effort, but most importantly, it depends completely on the understanding and support of the leadership team. The culture of a hyper-productive organization must embrace and support an empowered worker in a creative and open environment. Any business process that constrains creativity acts to the detriment of achieving hyper-productivity. Hyper-productivity can only flow from the organization not just upon having created the conditions that support autonomy and creativity, but also staying actively committed throughout the process, with the confidence that you can make it happen.

The experience of reading this book is also an epiphany into the inner workings of complex project management. Steve dives deep into that realm, providing a well-documented research history and firmly established empirical conclusions. You will benefit most by adopting a willingness to let go of preconceived notions. By staying open and receptive to the material, the approaches and concepts presented offer better ways of working. We owe a debt to these authors for having enough insight and conviction to clearly communicate the exceptional advantages that hyper-productive organizations enjoy.

In the second part of this book, we get an in-depth understanding of how Lean, Kanban, Scrum, Theory of Constraints, and Throughput Accounting define an interdependent model at the project execution level. However the successful implementation of this model is not guaranteed unless you are willing to go the distance. As the authors point out, few companies have reached a state of hyper-productivity in even one of their lines of business, let alone across the entire organization. Hyper-productivity is a fleeting state; one that requires constant cultivation of the right conditions. Despite one’s eagerness, hyper-productivity won’t happen by next Tuesday. To create the conditions of success, continuous effort must be made to tweak and refine them as the project development unfolds.

The conversion of assumptions into knowledge is the hallmark of TameFlow. As long as a process generates knowledge or business value, it should be supported even if it contradicts conventional theories and practices. Discovery-driven planning systematically converts these assumptions into knowledge as the venture evolves. When new data are uncovered, they are incorporated into the emerging plan. Discovery-driven planning is the mantra of TameFlow.

Traditional financial management is a major impediment to a knowledge-based organization attempting to achieve hyper-productivity. Conventional budgeting processes are not only dysfunctional, but also a real barrier to business growth and value creation. One alternative is that of a short-term financing process aligned with a lightweight planning process. This is the idea behind the Incremental Funding method, a financial model that maximizes ROI in a knowledge-based organization. The Incremental Funding method, Beyond Budgeting, Cost of Delay, and Throughput Octane are some of the alternative financial models that can successfully be used with the TameFlow Approach successfully.

The whole concept of incrementally funding a knowledge-based project needs to be extended to program and portfolio management. In order to maximize ROI, funding must be aligned with the most promising efforts. Through iteration, a complex project follows an unpredictable journey whose expected business value can change, both positively or negatively. Therefore incrementally reallocating funds across the projects and programs within a portfolio is necessary in order to reduce risk.

While reading this book I also encountered for the first time the concept of the Buffer Burn Rate and the charts used to visualize it. In terms of project status and performance reporting, the Buffer Burn Rate is a great tool for communication with stakeholders. It is robust and incorporates other derivative reports like Buffer Fever Charts and Buffer Control Charts which can be used to track trends and provide early and leading signals of future problems. My ideal report is an intuitive, graphic report and those featured in this book exceed that expectation.

Understanding the nature of knowledge-work from a business and organizational perspective is critical for the success of any project. Emphasizing adherence to defined procedures over adaptability of approach is not conducive to hyper-productivity. Hyper-productive organizations favor a product focus over procedural compliance; the former supports commitment to customer satisfaction, while the latter is self-absorbed and dispersive. In a hyper-productive organization executives must let go of “command and control” habits and practice engaged participation, just as if they were a team member themselves. Creating a “Unity of Purpose” and a “Community of Trust” are the main responsibilities of the executive, as they are the major elements for generating hyper-productivity. For this reason hyper-productivity occurs more frequently when organizational units are led by enlightened leaders who become a role-model for all team-members.

TameFlow introduces concepts and principles that promote the continual transformation of an organization from one that is productive to one that is hyper-productive. Steve and Wolfram correctly point out that the project management landscape is dominated by so called “wicked problems,” that is problems for which causes can’t readily be identified. Such problems cannot be managed through deterministic processes. The only approaches that work are empirical ones. A hyper-productive organization is a double-loop learning organization (product loop, process loop) heavily invested in continuous refinement of both process and product. Continuous refinement is critical for every journey towards hyper-productivity.

After reading this book, my final reflection is that it could have been titled: “The Best Infrastructure for Delivering Business Value from Complex Projects.” The combination of Steve’s empirical work, which is solid enough to stand on it’s own, and the unique innovations of his co-author Wolfram Müeller, a thought-leader in Critical Chain Project Management, is a phenomenal contribution to management theory. The authors have done an exemplary job in communicating these principles and as a result they have truly earned my support and respect for what they have accomplished.

Steve Tendon will deliver a talk entitled “Perform to Succeed: How to Compete in a Global Market When Size is Your Constraint” at the SME Malta Summit & B2B Networking Forum (see programme below).

The talk will present how many small organizations have been able to compete and outperform much larger ones. Superior performance is what enables business agility. Yet being able to improve performance when value-creation becomes more and more knowledge intensive is a challenge. When all assets, work in process, and products are intangible, because they are all ideas in your people’s brains, it becomes harder to recognize that there is an governing process, let alone innovate it. The difficulty is how to measure, manage and improve performance of knowledge work. Knowledge work is intangible.

The way to deal with performance in knowledge intensive organizations needs to become more sophisticated, taking into account different dimensions that determine such performance. Those businesses that learn not only to improve but also to innovate their knowledge processes will be those who are better positioned for success. Product and service innovation is often seen as the only way to compete; yet when a company is small and has limited resources, process innovation may be a secret weapon.

Steve Tendon joins the Ultimate Performance Team, a recently launched business coaching organization founded by Nathan Farrugia — a businessman, philanthropist, coach and motivational speaker who is known for setting the World Record of running 27 Marathons in 27 countries back to back, and for many other extreme endurance feats.

The Ultimate Performance Team works with business leaders and individuals to help them reach a mindful flow of excellence in mental, physical and emotional performance. In particular, the fields cultivated by the Ultimate Performance Team are perfectly aligned with the psychological flow of the TameFlow Approach. While the TameFlow Approach aims primarily at improving organizational performance, the activities of the Ultimate Performance Team focus on boosting individual performance, and will help individuals reach the maximum performance levels they are capable of — hence the tagline of “Ultimate Performance at Your Level”.

There is a natural symbiosis between organizational and individual performance improvement programs. By joining forces with the Ultimate Performance Team, there is a resolute intent to offer comprehensive and superlative improvement programs, unlike no others available on the market as the time of this writing. While an organization might improve its performance through the TameFlow Approach, it might improve even more by having all its people learn how to become mindful about how they work as individuals, and how to maximize their own performance levels, in all dimensions of professional and personal life that matter to them.

Steve Tendon, together with Dragan Jojic and Alex Gray, will deliver a talk entitled “Using Lean, Kanban and TameFlow to seed change in a traditional organisation” at the London Lean Kanban Day on April 29, 2014.

From the talk’s summary:

This talk will provide a brief overview of a journey we started in March 2013 with a client of ours, a digital division of a FTSE100 company. The story began with a single team adopting Scrum but then evolved into multiple teams across two programmes incorporating a combination of Scrum, Kanban and TameFlow (based on Lean, Pattern Theory, TOC and CCPM).

The talk will explain why Kanban was introduced and how it is used to visualise and control the flow of delivery of both functionality and architecture work. Kanban has been complemented by TameFlow practices like Control Buffer Management to improve forecasting, tracking and reporting for individual teams and at the programme/portfolio level.

We will also touch on the wider organisational change that is emerging as a result of improved visibility and increased focus on flow and value.

In particular Steve Tendon will highlight how the TameFlow management method helped the client achieve improved organizational performance.

Steve Tendon has been interviewed by Tom Cagley, the host of the popular SPaM Cast (Software Process and Measurement Cast).

Tom asked the following questions to Steve (approximate minutes into the talk are given in parenthesis):

What […] is hyper-productivity? (05:05)

If hyper-productivity is generated by unpredictable or unseen links, how can we use this concept to actually impact how we do work? (08:10)

How do you convince people that it isn’t as simple as following a recipe? (11:30)

How do you define that word (productivity) in terms of how you would measure it? (14:18)

Do you find that it is difficult to help organizations to get to that point? (19:40)

You recently published a new book ‘Tame the Flow’, a new book about hyper productivity, productive knowledge-work management with Wolfram Muller. In the description of the book you talk about extrapolating software engineering learning to general knowledge, work management. […] How would it be that taking something that is relatively specific, we then make it then generally useful? (22:08)

It is interesting that you bring up the Yahoo example because I would suggest that in software and software related industries we started the trend to distribute work and to abandon face to face, so is it that we have recognized that the experiment is less effective for hyper-productivity or productivity in general, and now we are trying to put the genie back in the bottle, and bring back the people together so that we can create the knowledge? (26:30)

We are back to the whole difference between each organization, each organization’s culture means that the solution that they will embrace to become hyper-productive is going to be different? (29:32)

Do you find that there is a strong message that organizations don’t typically want to hear. Obviously if they don’t want to hear they don’t even get there; but that suggest that this is a hard thing for most CEOs, CIOs, CFOs to actually hear that they are on the way? (32:10)

Steve, if you woke up tomorrow morning someone handed you a cup of coffee and a magic wand and said that you had the power to change any two things effecting organizational productivity and their path to hyper productivity what would those two things be and why? (35:18)
