Patch 17.29.01 Released

Patch 17.29.01 will be applied during tomorrow morning's weekly maintenance hours from 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM Pacific. As we've adjusted how guild emblems are stored, all previous emblems have been wiped. This shouldn't occur again in the future. Guild leaders will need to re-upload their emblem for their guilds.

Inaugural Election Details

The time to reign in TERA is upon us! Starting May 18, guild leaders who wish to declare their candidacy for a vanarch position, can. What is a vanarch? Vanarchs are an integral part of TERA's political system. This is an elected position that lets you reign over an entire province for three weeks. Start planning your campaign with our vanarch election calendar!

Elected vanarchs can collect taxes from vendor shops, set tax rates, decide which specialty shops to open in a province, and gain fame for themselves as well as their guilds. Vanarchs will be known across the realm—hopefully for good reasons!

Balancing the Queue

We already have a large and growing population of players (both old and new) on Feral Valley, and populations are leveling out across the remaining PvP servers. There are still queues on the more popular servers, but overall, queue sizes are now half of what they were previously. More importantly, you now have a choice. You can stay where you are and ride out the queue-storm, or switch to Feral Valley now, knowing that you can switch back to Valley of Titans once the queues die down so you can play TERA with your friends.

This maintenance was needed so we could move from running the service as a beta to the official release for new retail users and all the avid TERA fans who pre-ordered. Unfortunately, we ran into unforeseen issues with rolling out subscription management and were forced to extend the maintenance window much, much longer than any of us wanted.

New PvP Server Added: Feral Valley

Fond of your server's PvP ruleset but not fond of its login queue? Good news! We're adding a fourth PvP server, Feral Valley. This new server will be accessible at 12:00 PM Pacific on April 29 (otherwise known as shortly-after-this-news-post). You'll be able to make new characters on Feral Valley immediately. Want to continue your existing character? Not to worry, you can relocate your characters from Valley of Titans, Jagged Coast, or Basilisk Crag to Feral Valley when server transfers become available live on April 30, a free service as it helps to balance server populations.

TERA Server Transfers Available at Launch

If you wound up on a different TERA server than your friends, En Masse Entertainment has got you covered. Our account management system will offer server transfers starting April 30—a day before TERA officially launches. True action combat is better with friends, after all.

Server transfers will be free and immediate (no waiting period) throughout the initial rush of new players to TERA. Once the server populations stabilize, we'll place limits on the number of transfers, the level of your character, and how much gold you can take with you to your new server. We'll charge for server transfers you make for convenience reasons, but transfers made to balance server populations will always be free.

A bustling but not overcrowded server is key to the TERA experience, so we won't allow transfers to servers that are already oversaturated; we can monitor populations in real time and adjust server eligibility on the fly. Learn more about how to transfer servers.

Game Guide: Groups

Parties (or groups) are a way for TERA players to team up and tackle challenges like BAMs, dungeons, or roaming world bosses. Parties are also a way to complete "regular" quest content quickly, and in good company.

There are different ways to join a party—you can either create your own or join an existing one. Where do you find people to group up with? That will depend on what kind of party you want to join. There are pick-up groups (PUGs), "small" parties, and five-player parties. You can access the Looking for Group (LFG) option at any time by pressing the Y key.

Earlier Head Start and Upcoming Maintenance

Launch is coming up and quickly! We're putting the final touches on the game and our service, and we can't wait to go live.

That said, we do have scheduled maintenance to perform that will transition TERA into a launch-ready state. All TERA-related websites (including the forums) will be unavailable during the maintenance window of 12:00 AM to 10:00 AM Pacific on April 30.

Although we chose the maintenance window to accommodate the majority of users (and their sleep cycles), as gamers ourselves we understand that time just crawls by when you're waiting to play a game. The good news is that you're getting in sooner than you anticipated—our way of thanking you for your patience. TERA's pre-order exclusive Head Start event will begin at 8:00 AM Pacific on April 28, four hours earlier than originally announced. Additionally, after the maintenance window, the level cap will be increased to 60 allowing Head Start players to freely explore TERA!

Inaugural Subscription Pricing Extended

TERA's official launch day is right around the corner and our subscription management system will go live soon! This system will allow you to set up and manage your billing and subscription plan on your En Masse account page. We'll follow up with a news post when it's live along with instructions on how to use it.

We'll also be extending the availability of inaugural subscription pricing. All TERA community members who select a subscription plan by May 31 at 11:59 PM Pacific will be able to lock in discounted rates of up to 40% off the monthly subscription. Extending the deadline by a month will make sure that all of our founding players get to take advantage of rates as low as $8.95 per month. Once you select a discounted subscription plan, that monthly rate is yours to keep for as long as you keep it.

Queue and Population Added to Server Status Page

This page displays the queue and population of each server in real-time. A server labeled "Recommended" means there's low population meaning you'll rarely encounter a queue while "Full" means character creation has been suspended on that server.

Dungeon Guide: Cultists' Refuge

We have published the dungeon guide for TERA's third instanced dungeon, the Cultists' Refuge! The Scions of Lok have concentrated their forces in a remote desert temple, where they plan to resurrect fallen allies and unleash a terrible power on the Valkyon Federation.

This dungeon is meant for three to five characters, levels 35-40, including at least one tank, one damage dealer, and one healer. You'll face three tough bosses in this dungeon, and an optional fourth.

The cinematic shows how the Valkyon Federation has come together to face a soulless army that threatens to engulf the world from the perspective of a baraka warrior-sage. As we approach the official launch of TERA on May 1, we've thrown open the floodgates and now provide support twenty-four hours a day, every day of the week—even holidays and leap days—so there's always someone available to answer your questions.

New Launch Feature: New and Better Dungeons

Whether you're earning a dead god's final blessing or desperately defending the human capital, you'll put your action-combat skills to the test in TERA's dungeons. Plus...phat lewt!

Our new instance dungeon matcher helps you find the right healer, tank, or damage-dealer, gives you significant bonuses (depending on your role) for grouping, and even sends you extra rewards when the last boss falls. Speaking of rewards, you'll now see increased drops in all dungeons--up to double and triple the rates you've seen in past betas. Do your part, and you might be the proud owner of a Raiment of Nezrakul, Cauterus Axe, or Skysplitter's Bow.

Best of all, we added new dungeons and redesigned others so there's always some high-octane dungeon action available.

Back in March, we asked you to capture a moment of true action combat that showed your MMO-FOness, stamp your screenshot with MMO-FO ink, and then send it to us for our Calling All MMO-FOs contest. Throughout Closed Beta Test 4, we kept all the contest entrants locked in a warehouse where they could fight for supremacy. Well, the final throat punches have been thrown. The final dirty kicks have landed. Only the five biggest, baddest MMO-FOs survived and earned an MMO-FO shirt with which to mop the blood from their sweaty brows.

Closed Beta Test 5

TERA's fifth and final closed beta test has arrived! Starting this Friday, players will be able to venture into Eldritch Academy, Cultist's Refuge, and all earlier dungeons for the last time before we start our open beta. This event will use the same build as the previous closed beta test meaning no huge patches to download for returning players! Be sure to read Producer Chris Hager's recap of Closed Beta Test 4 for insights into what features we've got planned for TERA after Closed Beta Test 5.

In this last event, the Valkyon Federation, bolstered by a surge of new soldiers, strikes back at its foes, reestablishing control of troubled realms, and upsetting the meticulous plans of its enemies. In an effort to destabilize the federation and disrupt its momentum, Thulsa has decided to launch attacks at the relatively unprotected capital—Velika. The evil god is gathering a small army of monsters to fling them at the City of Wheels. The Mysterium's arcanists detected Thulsa's plans and alerted Fraya, who sent word to Velika. With little forewarning, will the federation be able to defend the city and thwart Thulsa's machinations? Be ready for a call to action in the evening hours of Friday and Saturday!

Closed Beta Test 4 Recap

Hard to believe that we're less than a week away from our last Closed Beta Test and PAX East! Time is flashing by, and we are a few scant weeks away from early character creation and launching our live database. We're moving at a furious pace, and we have some great surprises in store (more on this in a bit).

Closed Beta Test 4 started with the epic return of the Dragonfall server (Closed Beta Test 1 veterans may remember its short-lived appearance). We were also able to make some incremental tweaks to PvP, improve our behind-the-scenes moderation, and reduce player hit points from levels 1–15 by 30 percent, and then restore those hit points gradually in levels 16–20. The idea behind this experiment was to increase the excitement and difficulty of the new player experience. After looking at your feedback and analyzing our internal data, we concluded that it didn't improve the excitement and difficulty enough. Our next tweak will increase the difficulty of named creatures to see whether we can get people's pulses racing! We'll be looking for feedback on this experience in our mid-April Open Beta Test, so stay tuned.

The second installment is titled Killer written by En Masse Entertainment Writer Jessie McKenna and can be picked up today. This tale introduces Moorg, a kulkari scorned by his tribe, as he meets and befriends Lakhia, a human child. Moorg soon has to decide where his loyalties lie when Lakhia's family ranch is marked for destruction by his murderous kin, for to be a hero to Lakhia means being a traitor to his own kind.

Closed Beta Test 4

TERA's fourth closed beta test starts this Friday! Before we tell you what's new, we want to let you know that we'll begin deploying a new patch for TERA on March 21 at 3:00 PM PDT for about two hours. During this time you won't be able to patch. This isn't a long-term solution, and we're working on a more seamless experience for future patches. Once we verify the patch was successful, we'll open it back up so you can download the 9 MB update.

As a result of the feedback we've received during previous tests, we've made significant changes for Closed Beta Test 4. Most importantly, we have increased the difficulty between levels 1 and 15 by decreasing the player's hit points. We hope this will create more challenging and interesting gameplay. Those hit points will gradually be added back in as the player levels from 16 to 20. Also, in the heat of PvP, it can be difficult to see your opponent's level. To simplify this, we've made it possible to see the level of another player by aiming your crosshair at them. We've also doubled the character limit for all chat channels, making it easier to communicate with other players. For complete details, please see our patch notes.

It's hard to believe we just wrapped up our third closed beta test (CBT3), which was a ton of fun with more players than ever, and we're just days away from our fourth (CBT4)! It won't be much longer before our early character creation, open beta, and launch! There's electricity in the air in the office, and everyone is more energized than we've ever seen as we push toward the finish line.

TERA's third closed beta test begins in two short days! Before diving into what's new with the game, we have a heads-up to share. On March 8 at 10:00 AM PST, we're deploying a new patch for TERA. You won't be able to patch for about two hours while we integrate it. This isn't a long-term solution, and we are working on a more seamless experience for future patches.

We've been listening to you and have some great improvements in place for Closed Beta Test 3. We've made some small tweaks to the PvP system based on your feedback. It's now uncool to kill players six or more levels lower than you, and players who do will receive the red name of shame, with their punishment left up to the community. For the exact details, please see our patch notes. Our design goal is to give players the tools to run the PvP server and set a framework that encourages meaningful PvP but doesn't let asshats ruin it for everyone else.

Closed Beta Test 2 Recap

As we gear up for Closed Beta Test 3 coming this Friday, we want to look back at the previous event and see what went well, what could use some tweaking, and what you as players enjoyed.

In Closed Beta Test 2, the biggest new addition was probably our player-versus-player introduction. We opened two new PvP servers with an open-world PvP design (short of safety zones in cities). This combined with a guild-versus-guild declaration system made for an interesting weekend! To sum it up, the PvP players REALLY like killing each other. Across our two PvP servers, players racked up over 50,000 kills and over 150,000 PvP battles. We've also seen the formation of roughly 2,000 guilds, and the result was a ton of GvG battles.

The TERA Store is… Live!

Many of you -- our earliest-adopter fans -- experienced problems with our online store in the last 24 hours, for which we are sorry. If you read our previous update you will have learned that a mission-critical ecommerce system failed and the backup system didn't come online -- not exactly the most shining moment for our young company. This problem not only knocked out our store, but those of several other major game companies too, since we all utilize the same e-commerce provider for our online storefronts. Bad news!

The good news is that these systems are now back online after the provider's largest response effort in six years, and in the event you'd like to take the plunge, it is possible to use the online store to get TERA just in time for this weekend's second closed beta test event.

We're pleased to share details regarding the first of TERA's five closed beta tests! The weekend started with the En Masse team spending Friday evening in the office watching the world of TERA come to life as players began to appear in-game. The team was delighted to see players come into the game and instantly start swinging their weapons wildly. Right off the bat, expectations for an MMO were shattered as players found that clicking their mouse didn't activate some interface element or start a cooldown timer, but instead fired off the slash of a sword or a bolt of energy.
