Shortly after Andreya Triana’s pivotal “Tea Leaf Dancers” collaboration with producer extraordinaire Flying Lotus, BBC tastemaker Gilles Peterson was one of the first to throw some serious praise her way. She recently returned to the BBC airwaves, as Peterson featured her stunning live session recorded recently at London’s Maida Vale Studios. The results are pretty stunning.

Her anticipated debut full length Lost Where I Belong, produced by the legendary Bonobo, is set for release on September 7th. Fellow Ninja Tune Records singer and superstar songwriter Fink also stepped up to co-write two tracks for the album. Lost Where I Belong is a beautifully honest album combining Soul, Folk, Jazz and Bonobo’s cinematic magic. In addition, Andreya Triana will be accompanying Bonobo’s full live show once again on a full batch of live dates this November. If the sold out shows from earlier this year were any indication, these will be ones to remember.

Seattle’s Brent Amaker and the Rodeo recently announced the impending release of their new full length Please Stand By via Spark & Shine Records on October 19th, 2010. But fear not. Those who can’t wait until Halloween season can enjoy a some sweet freebies to better acquaint themselves with the Rodeo before then. PopMatters premiered the new barn-burner “Saddle Up” from the forthcoming full length, and Brent Amaker and the Rodeo themselves are also offering up the aptly titled Pink EP as a free download. The Pink EP collects the new tracks recently unveiled from the forthcoming LP, in addition to couple oldies-but-goodies– the vintage 4-track classic “Sissy New Age Cowboy” from their S/T debut, as well as “I’m the Man Who Writes the Country Hits,” taken from their 2nd album Howdy Do!, which makes clear that Brent Amaker and the Rodeo are indeed running the show. Last but not least, the video for “When Love Gets To A Man” is featured below, serving as the true link from their past to the new Please Stand By material.

Brent & co. hail from Seattle, Washington where it’s not always cool to be a cowboy. Dressed in black from head-to-toe, the Rodeo are influenced by original country music classics like Johnny Cash along with art rock and New Wave artists like Devo and glam rock innovators like David Bowie, all who actually gave a shit about putting on a SHOW. Their vibe, their sound, their whole deal, sounds like something that could be blaring from an old jukebox in the background of a rugged Quentin Tarantino crime film. They’ve gained a reputation for their raucous, whiskey-infused live shows. Their distinctly DIY approach has gained them a rabid cult following both abroad and in the cities where they’ve done their damage. Please Stand By will be released on vinyl, digitally and on CD on October 19, 2010. The limited vinyl will come with the accompanying comic book Mescal De La Muerte starring Brent Amaker and the Rodeo, written by Jay Cynik and illustrated by Simon Young.

In between releasing the new full length Blood Sea Dream, putting together dates for their first ever East Coast tour (to be announced soon), and answering questions about being a founding member of the acclaimed Port O’Brien, Grand Lake frontman Caleb Nichols somehow found the time to put together a cover of the Polaris song “Hey Sandy,” better known as the famed theme song to the Nickelodeon show ‘The Adventures of Pete and Pete.’

On the cover…

“When I was 16 I had the insanely great fortune of meeting Mark Mulcahy. We had mutual friends and Mr. Mulcahy wanted to play a show in my hometown of San Luis Obispo between stops in LA and San Francisco. I was beyond thrilled to get to meet the mysterious genius who penned the soundtrack to every kids’ favorite TV show – the Adventures of Pete & Pete.

There seems to be quite a bit of debate about what the actual lyrics are to this song are. I decided to sing the lyrics the way I remember them from childhood – so firstly, I left out the second verse, and secondly I sand the chorus “Hey Sandy, does your dog bite?” I also sing “It’s very strange” as the first line – because that’s what I always thought it was.” – Caleb Nichols

The vinyl, cd, and digital editions of Grand Lake’s Blood Sea Dream full length are out now on Hippies Are Dead Records.

*Silver Lining Drops 10/4/10 on Muti Music; Massive Run of Fall Tour Dates Also Announced*

Los Angeles’ MiM0SA has made a distinct mark on the West Coast sound in the past two years and has become one of the top West Coast exports. This young producer’s energy whilst performing is magnetic; the word has spread fast and MiM0SA has recently shared the stage with the likes Benga, Skream, Rusko, Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, Bassnectar and Flying Lotus, playing shows across the US and festivals like Coachella, Symbiosis Gathering, Burning Man, Decibel Festival and of course, gracing the stage at the now-legendary Low End Theory in Los Angeles. MiM0SA brings an energy that is as fierce as it is friendly, taking listeners and audiences on journeys through urban chaos and ecstasy. His new mini-LP Silver Lining is dropping October 4th, 2010 on SF based Muti Music.

MiM0SA’s production expertise has been in high demand and collaborations with Marines Parade’s Panty Raid have been featured on Mary Anne Hobbs‘ BBC radio show. His past releases “Flux For Life” (which cracked the iTunes Top 10 dance music chart) & “Hostilis” have shown an ability to move effortlessly between Dubstep and Experimental Hip Hop. Most recently, the Your Love EP begun to showcase a new level of skill and confidence as well. MiM0SA also partners with producer Sleepyhead for the collaborative project Sexytime as well. He’s been releasing on Muti Music for the past three years, and will be touring extensively throughout the fall.

Today marks the beginning of Kyle Andrews mania on the web with the debut of his world record breaking video for “You Always Make Me Smile” premiering on the front page of YouTube this morning. With 120,000 balloons and 4000 people, the video sought to set a new Guinness world record for largest water balloon fight.

Kyle Andrews’ new EP, KANGAROO, is out today on Elephant Lady Records. The songwriter has enjoyed a recent abundance of interest and new fans with the placement of his jaunty tune “You Always Make Me Smile” playing an integral part of Holiday Inn’s “Stay You” advertising campaign. Airing heavily on international television and online, there are many different versions of the ad with all of them using “You Always Make Me Smile” as the central theme throughout each commercial. The single (available now) is a taste of the warm, summery pop on his new six-song EP.

Like all of Kyle’s work, KANGAROO is addictively catchy with measured doses of pulsing synths and drum machines, but it belies an endearing homespun sweetness that stands out among DIY songwriters/producers. Recorded entirely in his bedroom, KANGAROO is Andrews’ fifth release following a string of other successful, self-produced full-lengths and EPs. Kyle made his mark in 2006 with his first full-length, Amos in Ohio. NPR syndicated station WXPN dubbed it “instantly memorable…packed with infectious hooks” and Kyle promptly answered the praise the following year with a seven song EP entitled Find Love, Let Go. NPR had high praise for his 2009 release Real Blasty describing it as “…an upbeat album for sad people who just want to dance…Andrews pulls it off by pairing his angst with bright electro-pop rhythms and irresistible hooks.”

Kyle Andrews will hit the road this fall in support of KANGAROO and has shared the stage with The Submarines, The Morning Benders, Josh Rouse and Peter Bjorn and John in the past. His live show is full of energy and not to be missed – a first round of fall dates have been announced and more dates will be revealed soon.

The Brooklyn indie-rock, dream-pop trio Kordan are set to release their anticipated first full-length album this October. Their shoegazey-electro textures take cue from the guitar drones of late 80s/early 90s groups like Ride or Swervedriver and are driven by propulsive, post-punk rhythms and synths of earlier Factory/Mute releases. More contemporarily, think a more melancholy, darker (but still dancey) flipside to the upbeat indie pop of The Drums. Don’t sleep!

Sifting through traces of quantum universes, Kordan find the lush textures, pulsating beats, and somber melodies that they use to project dreams of bleak, dismal cities in a holographic future. But just below this mournful atmosphere there is also flicker of energy, like one of those cities is slowly flickering back on after a blackout. Lumines- cent synths build on scratchy guitars and the electricity of the city finally rushes back on.

Arthur (vocals/guitar), Liz (vocals/synth), and Gabo (bass) emerged from the vibrant rave and indie rock scenes in Puerto Rico during the early 2000s. After different stints found them in different parts of the US, the trio converged in Brooklyn. Together again, they began to fuse an electro glint and a shoegaze murk, and thus forged Kordan.

In the fall of 2008, Cut Copy heard the band’s songs and chose Kordan as an opening act on their North American tour, taking them through Minneapolis, Chicago, Montreal, Toronto, and back to New York City. In the summer of 2009 Kordan released their demo recordings as the Fantasy Nation EP, garner- ing critical acclaim from Filter, Jezebel, and Oh My Rockness, among others. The debut release heralded Kordan’s aural world, tinged by futuristic visions and Japanese street culture. The following autumn months saw Kordan playing a CMJ showcase and shows in New York City, including opening for The Drums and The Mary Onettes. They have also brought their sonic influences to other bands, having done remixes for ZAZA and The Delta Mirror.

The Longing, their first full-length album, expands the dystopian city they built on Fantasy Nation, making way for a full-fledged love story in a hazy metropolis circa the year 2036. Somewhere in a bleak, run-down Tokyo neighborhood, someone drifts through the crowds, holograms, and faded neon to reunite with a loved one he hasn’t seen in years. In this vast metropolis of millions, loneliness has become his prison. The longing he has felt for her and the memories of what could have become have become his only reality.

“They have created a cerebral gesture, an atmospheric ride through Tokyo’s cityscape.” -Jezebel Music

“Fantasy Nation is one of the most memo- rable debut releases of the year, and listening to it shows why Cut Copy demanded Kordan to be their opening act last year after hearing the songs on this EP.” – Obscure Sounds

“If you like any of that old shoe-gaze Britpop stuff, then Kordan has a stronger than fight- ing chance to become a part of your listening life.” – Oh My Rockness

This week, the anticipated stateside import of the French Grammy nominated debut from France’s Revolver was finally released. To celebrate the release week of Music For A While, Revolver have rolled out a handful of new goodies. Filter Magazine premiered the recently recorded video cover of “Nevertheless” by 1930’s pop jazz talebearers The Mills Brothers, while early demo versions of album cuts “Do You Have A Gun?” and “Luke, Mike & John” were also unveiled. The band is preparing for their US debut at the OohLaLA Festival in Los Angeles on October 1st alongside other French acts such as Sebastien Tellier, The Gotan Project, Kavinsky, and more.

Music For A While was recorded in Paris’s Studio Pigalle. Revolver Producer Julien Delfaud (Phoenix, Herman Dune), helped Revolver hone their fantastically eclectic and century-skipping ideas, as well as gave the band the ability to recall the sunshine harmonies of Simon & Garfunkel and the Beach Boys, both of whom the band has always loved. Revolver’s melodies can be traced to 16th century songwriters and 17th century British Baroque composers, as well. Each of these styles defined the popular melodic and harmonic structures of their respective generations, and Revolver offers us a modern take blending each of these pop histories.

This week legendary noisy guitar stranglers Trumans Water return to the fold with an amazing new album showing the band hasn’t lost a step in their 7 year hiatus. Their 13th release in their 19 year existence, O Zeta Zunis finds the band as skronkily uncompromising still but the album is very direct and even catchy. To celebrate the new record, Trumans Water has some very rare stateside live engagements. Don’t miss if you are in the area!

Aug 24: Portland, OR – East End
Aug 25: Bellingham, WA – Cabin Tavern
Aug 26: Seattle, WA – Funhouse

Stay tuned for when Asthmatic Kitty re-releases much of their hard-to-find catalog this November.

“It’d be swell if a few of those sockless kids who’ve formed Pavementy, willfully lo-fi bands in the last year or two skronked themselves up in this manner and stopped writing songs about going to the beach.” Drowned In Sound

“None of their original fire and intensity has waned over the years” Line Of Best Fit

Ah, America — she loves a comeback, she does. Even the hint of its possibility tantalizes. Plays so well in Peoria (and elsewhere). Is it part of the USA’s national character to welcome back its own to any notable prominence, to celebrate a reclamation earned through reassertion, revivifying accomplishment — or retrospective reassessment?

Trumans Water never really went away. Scarce in their native land, yes — that, indeed, the veteran American “spazz-rock”/”squiggle-core” group has been in recent years. (Increasingly more obscure as well, relatively unknown to untold pods of younger blog-rockin’ folk — sharp-eared discerners, who might well luv TW were they to know TW — if still deemed “legendary” by those who, a) remember Trumans’ halcyon days in America’s early/mid-’90s “guitar-rock” underground; b) recall the life-altering praise from abroad, with the late great all-time tip-top good-taste-making radio DJ John Peel championing them over international airwaves, and the Melody Maker making this pithy 1993 assessment: “Sonic freaks with a lust for life, Trumans Water make Pavement sound like U2.” Hear, hear? Not bad — but your call.)

For over a dozen years, the Water’s arguably been more of a foreign affair, with releases on European labels, touring almost exclusively “over there” yet consistently recording stateside. But enough with the history (for now). Because the rock o’ Trumans Water lives in the present. Their new album O Zeta Zunis sounds remarkably fresh if also in keeping with a fistful of enduring collective aesthetic TW identities: the ever-active, wildly clawing, rough-toned brace of guitars; the sour-sweet sing-shout screech-croon ‘n’ power-yowl; the explosive rhythms, herking here and jerking there, none too predictable anywhere.

O Zeta Zunis may be Trumans Water’s studio album-proper #13 — or not, if ya count such various full-length Trumans cassette releases as Couch of the Spastics on Chocolate Monk or Cough Forth Such Dilemmas on Union Pole. Whatev. It certainly is their first new album since 2003 and, so importantly, it is coming out in these United States (and elsewhere) on Asthmatic Kitty Records. (The label will offer quality downloads; the band will put out a limited number of vinyl copies on their Justice My Eye/Elevated Loin imprint.) AKR will be their first truly stable domestic label home of the new millennium. (What’s more, Asthmatic Kitty is planning to catch up any interested parties in coming months by digitally re-releasing elusive albums of the Trumans Water discography.).

O Zeta Zunis is a cohesive foursome ripping confidently, a few slowed-up passages helping to accentuate the melodic riff-drive of “Last Time” or the balls-out whizz-bang of “Greased Water,” the twitchy-catchy frolic of “5-7-10 Split” or the rubbery buzz-chug of “You Live Out Loud.” Nice. There’re loping jams and snappy sputter-blasts as well. Essence of Trumans. And, as detailed, O Zeta Zunis brings the Water back to the United States — in some literal ways that’ve not been seen in over a dozen years. (Along with playing Europe, TW plan to do some actual North American touring to support this/other Asthmatic Kitty product.) Yeah, Trumans Water — those friendly fellows are of the world but they’re America’s and they never left so won’t you please welcome them back?

Liner notes after the jump

Trumans Water: the band history retains mystery. That’s a telling achievement here in the 21st Century’s second decade. L’information ain’t what it used to be. Curriculum vitae; elusive back-story; shadowy career arc; hard-won cumulative ‘n’ contextualizing data: specify, Google it — just a Wiki click away, eh?

Even TW’s maddeningly scattered discography can be had. Notably, said list includes three Peel Sessions — as in, live sets done/recorded/broadcast in/from London at the behest of the great BBC deejay John Peel, a name that is key to Trumans’ tale. It was the beloved rock-era-spanning Peelie (1939-2004, RIP) who plucked TW’s self-released ‘92 debut LP Of Thick Tum off a pile … That engaging disc — 300 pressed, “issued” by band in recycled album jackets; each faintly spray-painted-over and lovingly hand-crayoned back at Brockbank, TW’s legendary ancestral home in San Diego — was, at first, semi-randomly tracked by Peel on his influential show, aired worldwide. He loved it, expressing same via more talk/more rock: raved, phoned said band-house in SoCal live on-air for nascent group details from charmingly unaware residents — so très après ‘net, non? — and, wow, played the entire rec … and so on.

Many older Trumans fans know this story. And to this day, owing to Peel from way back and ongoing reliable Euro-good-taste tendencies, the Water is way bigger in the British Isles and on the Continent than stateside. They’ve not been on any American label in years, micro-indie or otherwise. So it’s major that US indie Asthmatic Kitty is releasing Trumans Water’s new album O Zeta Zunis back home in the USA (see OZZ one-sheet deets). And, amidst swelling cheers, AK will also digitally present much of TW’s rich back-catalog.

Nonetheless, there are still telling names connected to the history of Trumans Water that may not signify to even the most devoted Water devotees, much less new acquaintances. Seek out/etc., and ye may find/perceive yer own non-linear narrative …

Oh, Thurston Moore, sure, already a known quantity: early fan of Trumans (who indeed got some then-correct comparisons to “early mid-period Sonic Youth” in those heady early-mid ’90s). He actually contributed to the 1995 Trumans alb Milktrain to Paydirt. But what about Santee, CA mechanic Thurman Swanner? (And don’t think you got it figured out just cuz you know that young Santee sportsman Stephen Strasburg also went to SDSU as did TW’s Branstetter brothers [fierce ballers, Kirk 'n' Kevin B., BTW -- recollection indicates Team Water tanned Polvo's hide in hoops back 'n the day].)

Beck? Check. Big fan. Got Trumans off the road in Europe to come open for him while mega-touring during his breakthrough/how-ya-doin’-America “Loser”/Mellow Gold era — and what’s more, would himself cover TW’s epic “Aroma of Gina Arnold” (a Spasm Smash goldie), enlisting sundry Trumans-men to assist on stage.

Azalia Snail? Don’t say you don’t — you kinda should. (“American avant-garde singer-songwriter …[1] …psych folk and indie rock [2] …the 1990s lo-fi music scene …[3] … dubbed the “Queen of lo-fi …” — now, was that so hard?) She and Trumans Water (and Supreme Dicks-ter Daniel Oxenberg) did a sui generis fab free-form-y rock/out album that, um, is, let’s say, less a trib to a famous Argie tango pianist (lo siento, Atilio) and more a nod to a certain Osmotic Tongue Pressure-championing scribe …

And, well-well-well, how about that enduringly, awesomely enigmatic “69-year-old drummer [surely now in his 80s] Andres Malinao”? Still in the mix 15-yrs-+ down the road!

Yes, all this and more awaits, to a soundtrack of inspired Trumans Water guitar-strangle — and nary a misplaced possessive apostrophe, merci v. much.

–David R. Stampone

“It’s all very Nordic, and awfully pleasing – the kind of adult pop that Air were promising us with their first album, before they were sidetracked.” The Guardian UK

“Husky Rescue’s first two albums were packed with potential. Ship of Light is the album on which the Helsinki band realise it, raising their game, adding a new level of pop accessibility and threatening to move beyond their cult status to charm a wider audience.” The Sunday Times

“With softly grained melodies and the accomplished orchestration we come to expect from the Scandinavians, this is therefore a nocturnal winter treat from Husky Rescue. They offer so much more than your standard chill out fare, with songs that burn brightly in the darkness, and with words that can freeze you to the bone or, more likely, offer warmth in the coldness of winter.” MusicOMH.com

Husky Rescue is composer Marko Nyberg communicating a world of magic, beauty, spiritual awareness, and the idea of a hopeful sect sharing a common world-view to his listeners. This “sect” of course being the group itself, a collective of close friends as much as musicians. The Finnish band’s third album on Catskills Records, Ship of Light, will be released in October 2010 in the US.

Husky Rescue started their international career in 2004 with style. Their debut “Country Falls” introduced the pop-savvy and compositional stylings of Marko Nyberg, the Helsinki-based ensemble’s primus motor. Essential to the Husky Rescue sound was also Reeta-Leena Korhola on vocals, delivering each line with remarkable intensity and emotion. The cinematic sceneries found on the debut were further expanded on 2006’s “Ghost is Not Real”.

After releasing and touring the first two Husky albums, Nyberg at first didn’t have a clear-cut blueprint for the evolution of the band’s sound. But learning about a reported UFO sighting near his home just outside central Helsinki further turned his interest towards nature, thus propelling a new wave of inspiration. He sees hope and beauty in the Northern surroundings, and embarking on a solitary songwriting trip to Lapland early on in the process was a crucial decision in the making of Ship of Light.

Another important feature of the album’s strikingly innovative sound is the use of instrumentation that Nyberg feels a personal connection to. One of his tools-of-the-trade is the rare Memorymoog, an organ-like instrument yielding a sound like no other. Nyberg remembers longing after one in childhood, and he stumbled upon one before starting on the third Husky album. His Memorymoog sound of choice on the recording sessions was number 74, coincidentally also his year of birth.

Opening up a new chapter in the Husky Rescue saga, Ship of Light sounds familiar yet strikingly fresh and unique to those who’ve discovered the band during their first two albums. The current edition of Husky Rescue occupies its space more actively, getting under the listeners’ skin in a style reminiscent of an aural representation of postmodern film noir. More intense in ambience, the album also comes across as more communal in terms of the band’s mutual communication. Indeed, they recorded bits an pieces of it at remote cottages and the like, prompting Nyberg to call the ensemble “a contemporary musical congregation”.

Cuts such as the first single ‘We Shall Burn Bright’ stand as ample evidence of this. They are sonically rich and filled with the class A musical handicraft evident on every ounce of the album. The songs each sit comfortably within the framework, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of the frame they’re working in.

The Husky Rescue sound mk3 is live, inviting the listener into aural adventures not easily pinpointed at any one location, genre, or scene. The imagined open spaces coming through from the music could as well be in Finland, Norway or Nevada.

Ship of Light is about a transition into something better. Marko Nyberg and his trusty Huskies recorded the album’s opening soundscape “First Call” in the middle of a forest on a dark autumn night, using wooden flakes on a string. This ancient sound instrument is used traditionally to keep evil spirits away, and the Husky songsmith sees a strong thematical connection here.

Furthermore, Ship of Light is a celebration of old school musical craftsmanship at work. As the Swedish studio engineer Niklas Flyckt fittingly pointed out to Nyberg when mixing tracks on the album, “your drums sound shit but you know it”. Why aim for something sterile when you can make it life-like?

Listen to selected streams from the Ninja Tune XX Box Set and listen to a new track from The Bug

Check out the insane tracklisting here.

Welcome, come on in, sit down, be at ease. I want to take you back – back, back, back into the mists of time, when Margaret Thatcher was still – just – in power, Nelson Mandela had just been released from prison, the World Cup was won not by Germany but by West Germany and a man called Tim Berners-Lee published a formal proposal for something esoteric called the World Wide Web. And two young DJ/producers, fresh from their success with the likes of household names such as Yazz and Lisa Stansfield as well as in their own right, returned from a tour of Japan sick of major label bullsh*t and decided to set up on their own. These two fresh-faced young men, Jon More and Matt Black, collectively known as Coldcut, made NINJA TUNE.

Twenty years! Twenty fu*king years!? That’s a long time for anything, but for an independent record label it’s aeons. So yes, we are going to make a fuss. Yes, we are going to celebrate. But this will not be a tired cash-in, a festival of re-tread or an orgy of old. NO! We are focussing on new material, new newness.

This week’s Ninja Tune XX giveaway comes from one of the key artists of Ninja’s recent history, and of electronic music as a whole. Kevin Martin has been making and performing music for a long time, and under various guises. Having released feverishly acclaimed albums through Aphex Twin’s Rephlex imprint in the past, Ninja signed The Bug in 2007, to much excitement within the label. His debut Ninja full length, ‘London Zoo’, was everything we’d hoped it would be. Chiming with the formative dubstep movement that Martin had himself influenced, it drew together his mastery of electronica, dancehall and dub into a record that was as furious and fiery as it was infectious in its melody and bass.

‘Catch A Fire’ is a new track by The Bug and is on the Ninja Tune XX compilation and box set. It shows a fascinating development of Kevin Martin’s recent sound, alongside the trademark, irresistible production that’s made his name. This track will also feature on a brand new EP, out later in the year.

More on the box set, book & events after the jump.

The Box Set

So this is it. You’ve heard us going on about foiling and seven inch singles and clothbound this and that. There will also be 4 CDs of new music, blinding remixes and full-on exclusives. But first, a recap.

The Ninja Tune label is twenty years old this September. Yes, it’s two whole decades since Matt Black and Jon More (aka Coldcut) first released music under that stealthy imprint. And twenty years on Ninja is still going strong, if not stronger, if not stronger than stronger. What we’ve put together to celebrate this momentous anniversary is not a retrospective but what we’re calling a futurespective (that’s the kind of people we are. We make up words and you either buy in or we come round your house and suffocate you with a crisp packet.) What we mean is it’s a compilation of new stuff, of newness and newly made remixes that are new. What we mean is it’s really fucking good, what we mean is… oh, just listen.

So, here we go (this is a fool’s game in that one man’s monkey is another man’s amour.) In terms of the four CDs, particular moments to look out for include (but aren’t limited to): Two Fingers’ absolutely pummeling opener “Fools”; Autechre’s minimalist remix of The Bug’s “Skeng”; Toddla T and Ms Dynamite’s new collaboration; the return of Big Dada Sound with the cream of the label’s UK MCs riding a Bless Beats rhythm; Micachu’s remix of Roots Manuva’s “Dub Styles”; new and exclusive tracks from Zomby and Dorian Concept (which are killer, but we would say that) ; the Floating Points Ensemble’s epic soul-jazz number “Post Suite”; the exquisite link-up between Lou Rhodes and The Cinematic Orchestra on “One Good Thing”; Diplo remix of his own classic “Summer’s Gonna Hurt You”; Todd Edward’s twisted hijack of Spank Rock’s “What It Look Like”; Gaslamp Killer’s vicious re-work of DJ Vadim’s classic “Terrorist”; the truly far-out “Foley Room” reinterpretation from the Kronos Quartet; Mark Pritchard’s virtuosic take on Poirier’s “Get Crazy”; Mala’s dubphonic interpretation of Andreya Triana’s “A Town Called Obsolete”; or a hostof killer tracks from new and up-and-coming artists including Eskmo, Emika, Shuttle, Dark Sky, Offshore and DELS. This four CD promo willbe – more or less – the first four CDs in the box set – these CDs will also have a general commercial release as two double packs (are you following?). A few tracks haven’t come in on schedule and they’ll be added but it should give you an idea.

And remember, while all of this material will be available in two 2CD packs for consumption in your local HMV, the box set will contain two further complete CDs, plus six 7″ singles which will NEVER be anywhere other than in that box. Or on your turntable, obviously. Plus box set owners will also be able to download the King Cannibal mix album, “The Way Of The Ninja” and will be sent 2 free exclusive 12″s more details of which below, cos we just can’t give you enough…

What you haven’t got, but will also be in the box set is further exclusive music and remixes by Coldcut, Roots Manuva, King Geedorah, The Cinematic Orchestra, Zomby, Modeselektor , The Orb, Cut Chemist,Gold Panda, 808 State, Jaga Jazzist, Prefuse 73,The Heavy, Mr Scruff, EL-P, Kid Koala, Rustie, cLOUDDEAD, Matthew Herbert and many more….(phew)

And, even though by now you are completely exhausted and intimidated by the sheer MAGNIFICENCE of the package we have placed on the table in front of you, its weight, its depth, the circumference of that bad boy, despite all that we still have more to say.

There are 12″s. There are lots of 12″s. (vinyl is not dead, merely resting) Exclusive box set 12″s (only buyers of box set get these, by way of a digital code with the box set for FREE – cos we’re like that)

The Book

The paperback edition of “Ninja Tune: 20 Years of Beats and Pieces” will be available soon through Black Dog Publishing, as part of their acclaimed Labels Unlimited series. The book is written by esteemed music journalist Stevie Chick (a founder of Loose Lips Sinks Ships as well as long term NME scribe and current contributor to the Guardian, Mojo etc and author of books on Black Flag and Sonic Youth, amongst others) and includes exclusive interviews with key artists and label staff. Its 192 pages are also lavishly illustrated with original photographs, illustrations and flyers plundered from the depths of Ninja Tune and their artists’ archives.

Events

Ninja Tune will be throwing a whole lot of parties in many different countries to celebrate twenty years. You can find more info on their their events in Europe and Japan HERE.

There will be two U.S. Ninja Tune XX celebrations in NY and LA.

“After working relentlessly for a year on recording our debut album, we have finally finished it. We are incredibly proud of our record but we are eager to travel and play our music live all over the country. We are here on Kickstarter because we need your help. For over 2 years, we have toured in very uncomfortable situations (in several different vehicles ranging from barely functioning to out of our budget rentals). After a solid year of recording our debut album, “Bellow”, we are finally ready to tour nationally upon it’s release. We have worked extremely hard and are ready to work even harder to spread our music to those outside of California.

So, here we are. We have joined Kickstarter in the hopes that we can find support in order to reach our goal in attaining a touring van. We want to travel the ends of the earth and play music for you! We want to travel to big cities, little cities, towns, villages, communities and meet you, sing to you, hang out with you! We want to experience all that music will allow us to. In order to accomplish this, we must have a touring van.

That is why we are asking for your help. If you can afford to make a pledge today it will not only help us reach our goal on Kickstarter but it will continue to help us for years to come. Your pledge will enable us to keep touring, to keep pushing, to keep keepin’ on. With your help, we will be able to spread our music all over the world.

We are offering a variety of reward items and prizes for anyone that can pledge. We will also be posting exclusive updates throughout the fundraiser-so please keep checking back for more updates.

We want to thank you for reading this and for all of you who have attended a show, listened to our music or given us a hug or high-five. Thank you for your support. It means so much to us. We want to give back to you. We want to come to your city and town and play for you and meet you.”

Love,
Terra, Dani, Nicholas, and Jeff.
Sister Crayon

MP3: “Boy Toy (Fake Drugs Remix)” by Starfucker via Filter Mag

“Sharing their name with a punky Belgian girl group resembling the Donnas and one of the raunchiest Rolling Stones songs on Goats Head Soup (which was changed to the title “Star Star”), Starfucker are an indie pop/indie electro band comprised of Sexton Blake’s Josh Hodges, Junkface’s Ryan Bjornstad, and Mr. Fredrick’s Shawn Glassford. After chief songwriter Hodges returned to Portland, OR, following a four-year stint in New York City, he released two Sexton Blake records on Expunged Records with the help of Bjornstad, including Plays the Hits, a breezy but glum lo-fi album of ’80s covers. Looking to convert his musical endeavors into a more lighthearted project, Hodges recruited Glassford and formed a new group with Bjornstad. With notable live performances that featured some instrument swapping, dual drumming, and stage diving, as well as some outlandish costumes, Dylan Magierek’s attention was drawn to their set and he signed the band to Badman Recording Co. Hodges and Magierek took some of their home recordings to the Type Foundry to round out the record with some intricate layering, and in September 2008 the [Starfucker debut] album was released to the public and hailed by critics for its abundance of dance-friendly hooks.” – All Music Guide

Starfucker recorded a limited edition pink 7″ single and two short-run vinyl LP’s on the Badman label. Each piece of vinyl included tracks that were not released digitally. We are now making these five “b-sides” available as a digital only EP entitled B-Sides. The songs were recorded by Josh Hodges and Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Thao Nguyen & Portland Cello Project, Lovers) in 2008-2009 and includes a cover version of Madonna’s “Burnin’ Up.”

“Allow me to present you with my friends. Its all Southern California music here. Besides recording Wonder Wheel I, I’ve recorded and helped produce a number of local bands since 2003. Only now with a larger repertoire and network, the music has coalesced into a bright and happy zone that can’t be held back much longer. Some of these names you have heard before, some not at all; either way you will enjoy the lush collection of California dudes and dudettes.

2 songs each from: Tan Dollar, Pearl Harbor / Puro Instinct, Wonder Wheel, Cosmonauts, Muddy Flowers, Dash Jacket, Stellarphone and Moon Pearl.”

Happy Friday! It’s been a big week at the Terrorbird offices in Brooklyn where we’ve been as many as seven strong with Jay moving to Brooklyn and the inimitable Tim Jones visiting from our LA office. In addition to a bunch of awesome records going for adds at radio, we’re starting some new PR projects, and the licensing department continues to tear it up on small & silver screens.

This week we started a Tumblr blog. Follow us and we’ll follow back. The Tumblr will be a little more informal than this here blog, and we’ll be posting and reblogging MP3s and general things we think are rad.

We’re also still looking for another intern in our Brooklyn office! Preferably someone interested in PR & social media, although we’re still accepting applications for radio interns as well. Please e-mail Matthew (matthew at terrorbird dot com) with some information about yourself if you’re interested.

Finally, here are some things from around the web about our roster…

- Upstart LA label Proximal Records dropped their debut compilation Proximity One: A Narrative of a City including tracks from Dam-Funk, Daedelus & Tokimonsta, but there’s so much more good stuff on this it isn’t funny
- Reporter also made their debut with Time Incredible and announced a tour of the west coast
- Proggy popsters Social Studies premiered a new track at RCRD LBL
- “Stonehenge punks” Heavy Cream were featured on Brooklyn Vegan

MP3: “Figure 8″

“Lovers’ last disc, I Am the West, was one of the best albums to come out of Portland in 2009-even if its release went under the radar for a lot of people… Lovers’ next album shouldn’t catch anyone by surprise, because we’re not going to let it.” Willamette Week

Loud and proud, Portland, OR based Lovers is a band of emotional intensity and complexity. Their new album Dark Light begins with singer Carolyn Berk’s confession, “every time the music starts, I can feel my aching, shaking heart,” and from there, Lovers embark on a spiritual journey of inspired three-part harmonies, deep introspection, and next-wave humor.

Dark Light, recorded at Portland’s beloved Type Foundry studio with Badman label owner Dylan Magierek (Mark Kozelek, Thao Nguyen & Portland Cello Project, Starfucker)is the first for Berk, Ferris and Kingan together. Says Portland’s Willamette Week, the new record marks “a change in Lovers philosophy that takes the band from being a singer-songwriter’s outlet to a full-on synth-driven pop group, and it does so masterfully.” The result is an expansive sonic landscape of colorful wonder and hope, and an interactive and engaging performance that strives to leave audiences inspired. These audiences will, in fact, have the opportunity to see Lovers live this fall, with full October and November tour dates to be announced soon.

Over the years, Carolyn Berk has established her unique voice as Lovers with four acclaimed, haunted and heart-broken previous albums. Lovers (celebrated lyricist Berk, synth-programmer and performance artist Kerby Ferris, and multimedia artist and percussionist Emily Kingan) craft an intimate portrait of female friendship, sexuality, and evolution as an infinite process. The three first encountered in 2002 after Berk’s near-fatal van explosion while on tour with an earlier incarnation of the band. Emily Kingan, then on tour with classic Portland feminist hardcore band The Haggard, invited Berk to join the bill. Ferris was their roadie. Years later, Kingan organized a meeting for her two friends and future band-mates in South America, where Berk was travelling and Ferris was living at the time, performing in various experimental electronic projects in São Paulo’s thriving music scene. The result was sisterly love at second site, and prophetic premonitions of the creative collaborations to come.

Says Berk about Lovers presently: “We are like sisters. We are sisters.”

Social Studies‘ Wind Up Wooden Heart tempers the lines of the angular and experimental with a love of unadulterated pop songwriting, and heightens the arching vocal melodies with dramatic twists and turns. In ten tracks, the band offers us a glimpse into a prophetic future that, upon closer look, is crumbling with nostalgia and regret. The songs mirror the contradictory themes that run through the album with a balance between danceable melodies and unique structures that break out of the “verse/chorus/verse” boundaries.

With consistently catchy melodies, Natalia’s enchanting voice, masterful engineering by Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Subtle, Erase Errata), and special guest appearances by members of Bright Eyes and Thee More Shallows, Social Studies have crafted an album that’s equally infectious and innovative. Wind Up Wooden Heart (out now on Antenna Farm) is pop music fully realized for a modern era, and it’s a debut LP that begs to be talked about, sung along to, and played on repeat.

The band will embark on a West Coast tour throughout August and will be doing a full US tour this October. For those that can’t make it to their shows, Texas-based beatmaker Ernest Gonzales (aka Mexicans with Guns) offers a fresh remix of Social Studies’ “Battle of Shiloh” to whet your appetite.

Praise for their new full-length “Wind Up Wooden Heart”

“Wind Up Wooden Heart shows off the band’s way with brainy, unpredictable indie pop. One moment, they sound like Broadcast, if that band deigned to record on Earth instead of their spaceship studio; the next, they recall Cryptacize’s percussion experiments and vocal gymnastics; and every now and then, shades of Fol Chen’s kaleidoscope pop spring up without warning.” All Music Guide

“Rogovin’s Feisty vocals are intoxicating, but the interplay of her retro key riffs with drummer Michael Jirkovsky’s aggressive rhythms is what’s truly magnificent.” The Boston Phoenix

“Packed with anthems that favor broad musical strokes, and the album’s cross-pollination of influences ensure a little something for everyone.” Venus Zine
