Señora Uminsky’s Valentine’s Day Party

Senora Uminsky's Spanish III class brought a variety of food to enjoy during sixth period, from brownies and root beer floats to chips and salsa.

February 14, a date that is known around the world as Valentine’s Day. Around Tesoro, students were seen carrying large bouquets of flowers and huge boxes of chocolates. NHS members brought roses to fourth period classes, and friends gave each other candy and notes.

Amongst the festivites, Señora Uminsky’s Spanish III decided to have a celebration of their own. After reviewing the present subjunctive tense and taking a quick vocabulary quiz, students brought snacks and drinks up to the front table, setting up a kind of period six after-lunch buffet. There was a variety of snacks, including chips, cookies, brownies, cake, and even root beer floats.

Once they had finished up their quiz, the students got a chance to unwind, sit back, and ease their school stress with a plate full of delicious treats. “After a long, hard day of studying and taking tests, it was nice to relax and eat until the class was over,” said junior Rebekah O’Brien.

IMPACT Recruits

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, prospective IMPACT mentors lined up outside room 309 to await an interview to qualify for next year’s IMPACT program. IMPACT scheduled two dates to be interviewed, Wednesday February 15, from 3-5 p.m. and Wednesday February 29, from 7-8:30 a.m. As groups of seven began the interview process, each person was asked a series of questions by the lead mentors. “We are looking for students who are squared away and who actually appear to care about the freshman. Our main goal is to actually help the freshman make a smooth transition into high school.” said junior lead mentor Melanie Kim. The interview process was similar to speed dating; first you sit down with 3-4 interviewers. In one minute, the interviewers ask the prospective members a question, they respond and the lights turn off. When the time is up, the room goes dark and the future mentors move to their next interviewers. This goes on for seven rounds. “I loved having the mentors in my freshman homeroom this year and I think it would be a great way to help ‘IMPACT’ the school. Plus I’m ready for this interview! The email said ‘dress to impress’ and I’m here in a suit and tie! Could you ask for anything more?” said freshman Andrew Estipinan.

Girls’ Water Polo Senior Night

Varsity huddles up to encourage one another before their last game of the season.

During the last game of the season, girls’ varsity water polo players cheered on their only senior varsity member at their annual senior night. As a time-honored tradition, the varsity seniors were congratulated for their sportsmanship and teamwork. This year, Meghan Rafael was the only senior on varsity and was honored by coaches, parents, and teammates before the last home game begun. “What made Senior Night so special was the poster all the girls signed for me. Their quotes made me feel super loved and I will truly miss them all! Water polo has been such a great experience and I’m so sad to see it end.” said Rafael.

Following senior night we played in one of the best games of the year. Water polo is a game of determination, hard-work, and teamwork; three perks that our Lady Titans proved to be vital in the game against the Laguna Hills Hawks. Throughout the entire game, Goalie sophomore Amy Jenson put the team on her back and dominated the cage. Sophomore Emma Peterson scored three goals against the Hawks, and all the girls did a tremendous job by working together. Sadly, the Hawks won in a very close game of 10 to 14. We wrapped up the season last night and we will get them during swim season!

Tesoro Boys’ Basketball Let’s Keep the Winning Streak Going

With a 30 point victory over the Laguna Hills Hawks (the score ended 59-29) and a 14 point victory over the El Toro Chargers the team is on a positive swing heading into the post season. With an overall record of 13-13 the boys were able to secure the number 16 seed in the Division 2AA CIF playoffs. They play an away game Friday night at 7 against Westminster High School.

A Magical Day with Best Buddies

On Sunday, Feb. 5, Tesoro’s Best Buddies chapter headed to Disneyland for its annual celebration of the start of second semester. Over 60 members of Best Buddies made the trip to Anaheim to celebrate, arriving at the park at 9:00 a.m.

The group started the day at Space Mountain, then continued to ride Star Tours, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Splash Mountain throughout the day, as well as other Disneyland favorites. Space Mountain was the favorite among the buddies and peer buddies on Sunday. Senior Olivia Willet rode Splash Mountain for the first time Sunday, saying that the ride was “a lot of fun but really scary. I almost did not go on the ride.”

Midday, the buddies and peer buddies watched the Disneyland Band perform on Main Street, and junior Emma Eskildsen was chosen to be the guest conductor for “William Tell Overture.” The Best Buddies members danced to the music of Walt Disney and the Disney princesses before joining in for “Zippity-Do-Da.” After the concert, everyone went to Pizza Port to enjoy lunch before hitting the rides again.

Since it was Super Bowl Sunday, many members had to leave the park early to watch the game with family and friends, but a select few stayed through the evening. Sophomore Colin Kennedy and his buddy, Danny Ragone, were the last to leave, to which Kennedy said, “I win! We were first to arrive and last to leave.”

The Best Buddies Disneyland Day was ultimately a huge success, and the vast sea of highlighter yellow Best Buddies shirts was a sight to see. Best Buddies strutted through the park like true tourists.

Next on the agenda for Best Buddies at Tesoro: Acceptance Week, which will spread the word about Best Buddies and the Spread the Word to End the Word Movement. Look out for it Mar. 12 through Mar. 16, and be prepared for National Spread the Word to End the Word Day on Mar. 7.
