I was looking through old pics this week and ran across these ballet performance gems. Mark Morris Dance Group performed the Hard Nut Ballet this winter in San Francisco. The ballet is a twist on a holiday favorite that is both a little more frightening and a lot funnier than the classical ballet, especially under Mr. Morris’ direction. While he put his energies into a masterful choreography, the horror-comic artist Charles Burns did the production concept. Burns set this new ballet in the bolder world of the 1960s and ’70s which gave it a distinctive San Francisco flavor. The ballet originally premiered in 1991 in Belgium’s Royal Opera House, and was later aired on PBS where it garnered an Emmy nomination.
