I would imagine most people who is reading this website has a lot of technical knowledge when it comes to computers and I am sure you quite likely play games and if you play them on the PC I am sure you have, at times, suffered from frame rate problems.

Well I had this problem quite a lot lately with my system deciding to lag like hell during playing some games or video exporting (and if you are wondering, yes that is why they are being released very slowly) and I have looked into many reasons why and tried the following.

Updated operating system.

Updated drivers.

Removed anything not needed.

Clean the system.

Messed around with graphic card settings.

Re-sited CPU.

Well after that … it was still a massive problem and for the life of me I should not work out why. Anyhows after a few hours of playing Final Fantasy XIV my computer started making a loud noise and started slowing down. Now for any technical minds out there they would automatically tell me its the CPU under-clocking itself so it doesn’t get damaged and you would be right but fuck me I STILL could NOT find why it was happening.

So I was beaten and at this point, and although I do need one, I decided it might time to get a new PC seeing my old one is pretty “fucked” from just beyond his noise and over heating problem that I could not find.

Now I am sure you are wondering when I am going to cut to the point so here it is and the moral of he post – just because you know what you are doing you really should not over look the basics and someone else may actually have an insight that was useful.

You see my CPU was over heating and the reason for it was that my system needed a MASSIVE clean as the air vent that went directly near the CPU was completely blocked off to the point NOTHING could make it in or out. Amazingly my CPU did not cause a complete crash or die in a horrible fire but hey that’s my luck.

So yes to sum up and my advice for the day – really make sure to check things over before you do something and if someone tells you might be wrong – they may actually be right.

Anyhows time to get a new computer that can actually fit in a powerful GPU and PSU and not some mutant device although I think I may keep it for day-to-day computing.

So the other day I was wondering around town where just like anybody else, I decided that I needed a drink. So I walked into Morrisons and having been “some what” careful of drinking sugar lately I went to buy a Coco Cola Zero because when cold it does kinda taste like the original Cola.

So anyhow I bought it and went outside the shopping area, went to the bus stop and then sat down opened up the bottle when a random woman who had a couple of children with her decided to say quite loudly the following:

HOW DARE YOU DRINK THAT IN FRONT OF MY CHILD!

Now if I am to be honest I kinda just sat there, blinked for a few seconds and then looked around wondering who she was talking too and before I could say a word she started to go on about how she does not want her child to have sugar pushed in front of his face. So basically this random woman decided to have a moan that I was actually drinking a sugar-free drink and that she had the right to moan at me because of something she wants. And yes I do understand the looking out for your children stuff but I hardly see why I should care about what I do – she can deal with her own children how she want and stop bothering people just because she wants to do something else.

Seriously and I ask all of those that is currently reading this – Why should people have to change what they do just because one other person demands it for whatever reason it is. And yes I do understand that people want to make sure their children don’t do certain things (drugs etc) but if it is accepted by social standards – why should you?

Although we can debate how “healthy” diet drinks are, I would have thought it would have actually been a good thing to show your child that people still do enjoy drinking what they like even if it is a sugar-free product and that there are others out there that share the same point of view.

I suppose it can’t be helped with people who think like that but seriously no one cares how you want to raise your child – let everyone else do what they want in peace.

Imagine this:

A police officer is running through a burning building slowly losing his grip over a Glock 17 as someone is running away when suddenly a car is speeding around following a train and then all of a sudden someone is cooking – that is what channel surfing is like and it is very, VERY annoying.

Now I can understand if you are watching TV and a ads start appearing and you flick over to other channels while you wait for the show to come back on, but why do people and I know a lot of them that does this, watch something until the break then switch to something else and once that hits a break to then switch to something else while not actually finish watching anything. To me that is just being lazy or there is nothing actually worth while watching and you would likely be better off just turning the TV off.

If people really can not sit long enough to be able to watch one programme on TV without having to keep switching it over, than maybe watching TV is not for you.

Know what the sad part is? I really have nothing more to say than this about – channel surfing is very annoying and you really should do something else is all you are going to do is flip over the channels and annoy anyone who MAY be watching something.

As some of you likely know (more so if you are parents but I do know many teenagers do read this website) it is half-term for a lot of places in this country and I only figured that out when I was sitting on a public bus and it was … relaxing and quiet (as quiet as an old bus can go anyway) and it got me thinking of something I wanted to write about ages ago.

If you are as unlucky as me you might live in a place that has very little public transport at all and if this is the case you will know what I am on about, if not then imagine living in a place where if you wanted to go somewhere without your own transport you have to rely on public transport that only exist to transport children to school (even if the council claims otherwise, they would cancel it in a heart beat if they could). As you might be able to imagine these buses would have to pick up a lot of people as to be anywhere worth while running they would need to pick a lot of people up. So now imagine a bus full of people and now imagine the same amount of children all having to fit on one bus where they is clearly not enough room.

So by now you should be imagining about an overfilled bus and if you are, you could imagine if you was catching that bus you would likely catch the first one on it or take a later bus (which ha, doesn’t exist) and if you are thinking this you can be sure as hell the children are thinking this one. So what is better than queuing up nicely then pushing and rushing your way into the bus and in the progress endangering other people by pushing them onto the road used by the buses.

Yep, you heard me right. What happened was a bunch of children wanted to get onto the bus so fast so they can get the seat they wanted, pushed the smaller children out-of-the-way close to the road (and a few of them did indeed actually hit the road).

Now thankfully the bus station I use is “not that busy” but really, why the HELL does anyone let alone children need to physically push people out-of-the-way just so they can get ONE seat on a bus?

Really does sitting at the back or at the top really matter “that” much compared to the health of someone else?

Well we already know the answer. Some children do not care and believe their status is more important than anything else. And some people wonder why pediaphobia exist.

Ah, Christmas. The time where Christians rejoices about the birth of their messiah, others happy about no work or whatever but Christmas is also the time for giving and to some it seems they ain’t even trying. Before I go on this rant is not an insult to charities and most charities (mostly local ones) do a good job where Governments have failed.

I have seen lately more and more people have been “giving” a gift which is simply a “donation in your name” which is exactly as it says – someone donates money to a cause that you believe in (or worst, they believe in) and then have the nerve to claim they given YOU a gift when all they have done is given money to a charity of their choice to make them feel happy. Now do not get me wrong as there are many charities that does excellent work but not many really knows what you value and unless they said in advance or did a hell of a lot of research on you, that “gift” they sent you ends up being something they value and not you.

Now I know what some are thinking “Oh they done something nice for someone else, in YOUR name!” and you would be correct if it was something that you believed in or even worst – something that you DISAGREE with. I find it very obnoxious that someone would give something in YOUR name and then expect you to be happy, thankful and hell even grateful that they did it. Take this as an example: Lets say you do not like children and want nothing to do with them and someone donates in your name to the NSPCC.

Now I could forgive someone doing that if it was not lazy. I know people are now thinking they do not have to send a gift at all and you would be right just in this case they never even sent anything in the first place other than their ego put on a bit of paper. I am more than happy if someone sends a card or whatever but to simply send a donation in my name to something you believe in is VERY lazy and only serves to float your ego. Now I would not debate nor complain if someone sent me a list of charities and go – “Hey Matt, you are hard to shop for and / or got everything you want. What charity would you like me to give too” and honestly I would be far more thankful and happy that you allowed me to pick where to help and not assume.

Because let’s be honest – all a donation in your name to a place you want is YOU being arrogant that not only did you help the charity you want but you expect me to be happy that I got such a great gift … which isn’t a gift at all. You want to give money to charity then fine do so and skip me. You want to send money to a charity in my name? Also fine but ask me so I can tell you otherwise as it will not be going to that lovely charity of yours but something I find worthwhile like Stem Cell Research instead.

Just man up. If you can’t think of a gift then just get a gift card – we all know everyone got to pretend they are thankful anyway.

With Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn being released just a short while ago, I have some what got back into playing a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) on a casual scale and as per normal I pick a healer as I prefer them over the others (a summoning / pet class comes when I want to be a damage dealer when I do not want to have to think much).

After playing the first few dungeons with having no problems at all with having nice friendly community and then building up a few in-game friends, I tend started to drift the mid end dungeons and what I learnt their reminded me of Final Fantasy XI and other MMO’s all over again – that the healer does indeed seem to act as the “mother” of the group.

The first example is that you are normally expected to put everyone else before you and make sure that they are completely fine. So basically you are “expected” to keep everyone else alive and cure them and if you have all taken damage you are then expected to make sure they are all restored to a good amount of health before you should cure yourself. And then if you do not do that you are often blamed for the down fall of the party should you suffer a wipe because you know, if a healer dies it is not like the party will survive long enough as it is.

The next example is an old classic – you are blamed for pretty every bad thing that could happen even if it is due to others not doing their roles correctly. Then it goes further that people will moan at you because they expect you to be able to clean up every mess they do and then go bragging how great they are when you do solve the problem. The next problem with this is you are pretty much expected to “never give up” and keep playing even if things are failing but oddly enough most others are free to go as they please and then blame the healers in being useless and ruining their gaming experience which brings me to my next and most annoying point.

While I understand the role of a healer but many others seem to think that a healer is simply playing for other’s people benefit and not their own. This makes others believe that they are more important than anyone else that is playing and pushes healers down to feeling like they are non-playable characters kinda like shopping assistants checking out items for someone in a super market.

It is the above problem which causes those players to then moan at healers when things go wrong because it is their game play that is being ruined and everyone is not playing how they want regardless the others are also playing the game. But on the plus side at least when those players “grow” up in the game they become very thankful for that healer who has kept healing them although abuse have been thrown at them.

Does the above remind of you of anything?

If your answer was dolphins then what the hell are you smoking!? It should remind you of teenagers moaning about their parents always ruining everything for them although it is always their own fault.

While I do admit there are many players not like this and many of them are a pleasure to play with do remember this – do not piss off the player who can always skip a cure!

And for the damage dealers and tanks out there that respects the healers than thank you – we respect you too unless you are a dick.

I have recorded what happened in this rant. I will upload it this week and will embed the video at the bottom.

For those that knows me well will know that I hate random lights on when I am trying to sleep and this is the tale of the motherboard that refused to turn off.

For the last few weeks I have been upgrading my PC and although it is not yet done (still need to get more RAM, new I/O panel and what not) the computer itself turns on and works fine although it a very loud device (the I/O panel has a temperature sensor on it to fix this).

With the upgrading now nearly being done and having it being a MUCH needed update I decided I might as well try the Final Fantasy XIV beta to see if it ran. It ran perfectly I really could not fault it (my review on Final Fantasy XIV will be the Playstation 3 version and will be published once the NDA expires) and after playing it with my brother for a while I decided to call it a night and go to bed.

So I shut down the computer, take out the plug and then walk over to the bed when I noticed something – the motherboard light was still on. Thinking that it is likely just some static or something I decided to nod off thinking little of it. A few hours later my brother wakes me up and says.

Me: “Eh, what you mean.”

Brother: “The light is on.”

Me: “Then turn it off.”

Brother: “I can’t.”

Me: “Just remove the power cord from the PC.”

Brother: “I have. It really will NOT turn off.”

So forcing myself out of bed with a somewhat confuse face I wonder over to my PC and my brother was right – the PC was still powered on and better yet the Serial ATA drive was still powered, the keyboard and mouse was still powered and even the USB wifi was still powered.

Yes, my computer was still on with no physical power cord being plugged in. Having now getting slightly worried that my upgraded PC may suddenly burst into flames we decided to have a look and there was nothing inside it that we could see that could explain why it is still powered up.

With this in mind I decided to go back to sleep. Well about five hours later I got woken up again with my brother saying it is still on and that searched online and the error is a Dell message saying the motherboard is broken. Being confused as it is a brand new motherboard and the fact it is not getting any power, I decided to have another look in the hope I could find out why or at least disconnect the drives before they started to spin like mad.

So to recap this computer has been unplugged for about 6-7 hours and the power light is still on and that I tried to remove the static. Well it seems after a while from poking around and trying to see what is wrong with it, the computer was still actually getting power from a very unlikely source and wait for it …. the USB port.

Now if you know anything about computers, you will know that a computer USB’s works in “usb host controller” mode. This means the computer will give power for any device that is connected to it and for some reason, some unknown reason the computer was being powered by a different device.

So having removed all USB cables I found the one that was doing it – the Onlap Monitor which still had a lot of battery power in it.

So there you have it. Spent all night in a half worried state my computer would suddenly set on fire when it was being powered by a monitor that had battery although I do not recall a USB host controller can even ACCEPT power from a different device.

When people start a blog, Lets Play or whatever they normally start doing so because they enjoy it and not start simply for the sake of profit and if you are lucky people will notice what you do and join you with what you are enjoying doing. If you are unlucky then you either carry on doing it because you enjoy it or give up and move to something else.

Over time you will start to get better and better (only have to look at Tweaked for your Pleasure’s archive) and with this you will aim to become better and better. This could mean a better writer, editor, gamer and what not but regardless you will aim to improve on it and this is what will define you.

After time has passed and you start to get good at what you do, slowly people will remember you for doing what you enjoy and in time and if you are lucky you will gain recognition from it. I have noticed with people when they get to this stage, it does goes to their head and very quickly you will lose sight of why originally you started. You will start to feel regret, you will find many people who hate you due to what you do and you will find people better than you.

Due to all this people will decide to go further beyond and not carry on enjoying what they did, it now becomes a game on who can do better. You will do more, you will expand into things unnaturally and do things that really they have little enjoyment in doing and in time they will lose control of it all and end up with nothing to show for it.

If you are lucky in the nothingness you will find that exact thing you once enjoyed and hopefully this time the cycle will not repeat.

I am sure you are wondering what this means but I am saying from experience and from what I have noticed with people if you are doing something because you enjoy it then do not worry about anyone else and carry on. Once you start to let what you enjoy define you and all you do is focus on that – you will end up messing it all up if you do not keep control.

So that’s my advise for today. You can go on with whatever you was doing.

I am sure as a reader you have either watched Playing Games with Snat, heard about it or have found this link via Google as you are doing your own Lets Play or having problems overlaying audio with footage.

If you are having this problem then carry on reading and if not, why are you here?

The main problem most people have (and the same one I did) is assuming that the audio is recorded as a fix length of time – aka if you recorded 30 minutes of gaming footage and 30 minutes of commentary that it will overlay without any problems. This is not exactly true as I have discovered sampling is what really matters and then secondly making sure audio is recorded without any skips.

With the audio sampling you need to make sure they match. Using my hardware as an example the AVerMedia Game Capture HD records the audio at a typical 48k (most TVs uses this, so good chance your capture device is as well) while I am recording the audio for my commentary at 42.1k – typical CD quality.

When both of these are then put into my editing software (Movie Edit Professional 2013 Plus) they never overlay. The reason for this is mostly due to lost of audio per frame although I will be honest and say I do not understand it too well myself so if anyone knows exactly why then please do post in the comments. If you assume that you are losing a frame a minute then your audio is, every minute about 0.6 second out of sync and this builds up quickly – more so when you are recording for a longer amount of time.

So all this means to start with is when you are recording your commentary or whatever you are doing with overlaying the audio make sure it is recorded at the very same audio sampling rate as the video you are going to overlay it with.

The next issue I had is simply limits on the audio recording that caused skips. When I was recording for Playing Games with Snat: Final Fantasy XIII Part 12 I was doing it with Magix (audio) with a browser open, IM messaging loaded and a anti-virus scanning which caused bits to skip which does make the file length smaller which naturally stops it from overlaying.

In a nut shell make sure all you are doing is recording audio and not stressing your system out and that you are recording everything in the same sampling rate (where possible). Beyond that there is not much more I can say. If you are still having synchronisation problems then post in the comments and I will see what I can do.

A week or so back I did some recording with the help of Wrights Productions and a comment came up that if the owner was left to his own devices he will live purely of take away and microwave food. Now the reason for this is simply because he is very lazy and would prefer not to cook (if he can) but it got me thinking – what would it be like to actually live only eating microwave food.

Now really I should do this for a month but seeing I am lazy and prefer cooking a good meal, I am doing this for only a week and below are the results. This article will update daily. Should note I may pull this earlier if I decide for health reasons it is not wise to carry on. Should also note if you want to read more about possible bad tasting food, do go over to my food review blog at Is it Nice?.

Monday ~ 2013/04/22

So today we start. I figured to start all this off I would not get a set meal to eat today but rather get a bunch of different “microwaveable” food and seeing I am doing this “on the cheap”, I am also throwing in a cheap drink and not my typical Irn Bru.

As you can see on the right hand side we have a Ruster Burger that cost a quid from Morrison. Next we have some McCain’s micro chips and seeing I do not mind McCain’s chips at all I figured it should taste alright. Next up I have an orange looking drink.

So after three minutes of microwaving my food was finally ready …. and the chips was completely cold. So after whacking them in for another two minutes it still was not ready. So accepting my microwave has zipped its last food I went to check the burger which was piping hot.

Regardless I finally got the chips warm enough to eat and it did not occur to me then but I forgot to take a picture of what it looked like at the end but I am sure you can imagine it did not look that much different.

Taste wise though it was not bad. We will see if within a few days I still have the same opinion. I should note the microwave chips was barely anything and came to about 10 if you was lucky and should have fries to go.

Tuesday ~ 2013/04/23

So today was the same as yesterday with a few minor detail. The first was I decided one pack of those microwave chips was not enough so I had two. Rather than the orange drink I instead had a can of Irn Bru. Not including the Irn Bru as I always drink it, I have noticed a slight lack of energy and will already so time will tell yet.

Tomorrow I will try a more common pre made microwave meal – will decide tomorrow what though.
