4.0.1 JB for 3GS with old bootroms

Note: This JB bundle works with the current version of Ultrasn0w and supports hacktivation.

Please be aware of the the following requirements:

iPhone 3GS (with older bootroom, aka can be jb without tethering)
iTunes 9.2.1
iPhone is currently jailbroken (pwned, not spirited)

If you meet these requirements than you may proceed at your own risk. I will not be liable for any headaches, lost of productivity, lost messages, etc. Be aware as always, you many not be getting what you think if you are not grabbing the files directly from Apple. Ok so lets get started!

Download Pwnagetool from Here
Download Bundle from Here

Pick a new clean place to work, i recommend making a folder called jb. Extract all of the files and place them in this directory. You should have the following files:

Pwnagetool.app
iPhone2,1_4.0.1_8A306.bundle

Open a terminal window and change into the jb directory:

Once you have completed these few steps, you may proceed to build your custom ipsw. Launch Pwnagetool, when it fails to find your firmware, select the location to it, possibly in your Downloads folder. After a couple of minutes of working, it will prompt you for your password, so enter it and then let it proceed. Once it is complete, and your custom ipsw has been built, it is time to go into iTunes. I *HIGHLY* recommend that you sync before going any further. Backup your contacts, calendars, music, photos, etc as these will all be wiped away.

So, you synced everything and are ready to restore… Select your iPhone, Hold the Option key and click on Restore. A dialog box will open and allow you to choose your image to restore. Navigate to the ipsw that you just created. Click on OK and let it do it’s thing.

Congrats, your iPhone is now running iOS 4.0.1. Once you activate, you will see Cydia in your list of applications. Do not hesitate to do a complete update. If it hangs, sometimes it will, just power cycle your phone and try again.

NOTE: If you Hacktivate, you will need to add cydia source http://www.cmdshft.ipwn.me/apt/ and install pushdoctor for youtube and push notifications to work. This is not needed if you activate with an official sim.

4.0 Public Jailbreak for 3GS with old bootloaders

Once the restore is complete you will be setting your iPhone up as a new device. *DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP* If you need to do this, then do not proceed to restore the firmware. Because of change between 3.1.x and 4.0, restoring from backup is a very bad idea. Just a heads up. If you choose to ignore this warning, you are completely on your own.

Congrats, your iPhone is now running iOS (I hate that name, I think of Cisco everytime I see or hear it!) 4.0 GM. Once you activate, you will see Cydia in your list of applications. Go ahead and launch it. You will quickly discover that none of the repo’s exist! Oh no! Not to worry, select Manage, Sources, Edit, Add and then enter “http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7″ and select Add Source. It will get down to business and download repos, etc and then present you with the option to update. Do not hesitate to do a complete update. If it hangs, sometimes it will, just power cycle your phone and try again. You will end up with a working Cydia installation.

3GS Jailbreak for GM Candidate

I am presenting my bundle in hopes that it will help speed the porting of apps to iOS 4.0. The bundle I am presenting is geared for developers only so if you are not, you are on your own. Please be aware of the the following requirements:

iPhone 3GS (with older bootroom, aka can be jb without tethering)
iTunes 9.2 beta
iPhone is currently jailbroken
You have the original carrier sim (hactivation is not yet functional)

If you meet these requirements than you may proceed at your own risk. I will not be liable for any headaches, lost of productivity, lost messages, etc. You understand that you are using a GM Candidate, ie, this is still considered beta software. I will not post links on where you can download the IPSW or iTunes 9.2 beta. I make the assumption that you are either a developer with legitimate access to the files or you are smart enough to find them online. Be away as always, you many not be getting what you think if you are not grabbing the files directly from Apple. Ok so lets get started!

To recap, this is for Mac users only! Your baseband will be preserved! You must be already jailbroken for this to work. This does not use any new magical exploits, just the famous 24kpwn exploit so older bootroms are required. I will not offer support on why application or tool xyz does not work. I am providing this to so that developers can check their apps and tools to be ready for the 4.0 public launch. Recreational use of this is at your own risk! Seriously, I cannot stress this enough… This is beta software and there are bugs and some things just flat out do not work yet.

Apple Seeds Snow Leopard Build 10F564 – Possible GM?

Unnamed sources have provided the following information for your consumption.

Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6.4 Build 10F564 comes in a whopping size of 600.3 MB in its delta form. Like the last 3 seeds, the focus areas are the same, and once again reporting no none issues. With the 506 build number jumps and a GM looking build number, just days before WWDC one has to wonder if this is indeed the GM or just another wacky day at the office.

Apple has highlighted the following focus areas of this update:

SMB
USB
Voice Over
VPN

Resolve an issue that causes the keyboard or trackpad to become unresponsive
Resolve an issue that may prevent some Adobe Creative Suite 3 applications from opening

A New Blog Name

I have been thinking about things and rather than to potentially run into Apple’s lawyers over trademarks, it would be easier to simply rename the blog to http://techblog.tgil.nl. During the process of moving the blog, some of you felt the pains of the move with broken links, missing images, slow load times, etc. I have setup a permanent 301 redirect so all of the bit.ly links should continue to work. Since I have all of this free time will laying on my back in the hospital, doped up on pain meds, I decided that I would also change the apple favicon.

OS 4.0 Beta 4 Jailbroken on 3GS

This is a work in progress but I thought I would share the results so far. Cydia still has some issues, many applications install but crash, some examples include mobileterminal, sbsettings, five icon dock. I did this only to hopefully motivate the developers to get their applications ready for 4.0 as it is coming very soon and the last thing we need in the community is to have repos full of broken apps! I accomplished this by patching asr, lockdownd, LLB, iBEC, IBSS, iBoot, kernelcache, MobileSafari, Services.plist, and fstab. The binaries were patched with IDA Pro and OxED and were then diffed against the original pwned files with bsdiff to create patch files. I then took the diff files and built a firmware bundle that I dropped into Pwnagetool and updated the cydia tree within Pwnagetool as well. Once this was done, I created a custom ipsw with Pwnagetool, unzipped it, applied a pwned LLB from a pwnagetool generated 3.1.3 ipsw, zipped it back up and restored to my device. At this time I am unable to get my T-Mobile NL sim to work so I downgraded back to 3.1.3 after playing around with 4.0 for a while. I look forward to the release and the official unlock from the Dev-Team. Many thanks to @p0sixninja for many hours patiently showing me the tricks and tips of jailbreaking 4.0b3 and then setting me out on my own to do beta 4. Without his tutelage, this would not have been possible
