When it comes to buying a car, some people prefer to buy new. And it certainly has its benefits: new cars have no repair history and come with a warranty. On the other hand, a new car costs far more than a used vehicle. And once you start driving, the car immediately decreases in value, with many depreciating 20% in the first year. And the extreme heat in Saudi Arabia will devalue your new car even faster.

If you’re in the country on a temporary basis, buying a fancy new car may not be the most strategic move as you’ll have to resell it in a few years.

That’s why many expats opt to buy a used car – these also have a better resale value. Keep in mind, however, that used cars also have their drawbacks. The biggest one is that you might not have the complete service repair history, meaning you might be in for a nasty surprise in the future.

New expats usually arrive in the country around September, so this is when a lot of people are looking to buy a car. It’ll be a trickier market and anything you can get will be more expensive.

The registration of new cars costs SAR 100 and is initially valid for three years. After that, you’ll have to renew it every year.

Once that is done, you can pick up your registration card (استمارة, istimara) from a local branch of the General Department of Traffic.

Some of the biggest expenses include:

Mandatory car insurance – depending on your car and your needs, you can decide between third-party liability and comprehensive insurance. Generally, the former is more affordable. Though annual premiums will vary by the age of the car and the driver’s profile, third-party liability insurance annual premiums usually start around SAR 800; comprehensive insurance premiums start around SAR 2,500.

Vehicle maintenance – the costs of maintaining a car can be significant. Although it’s impossible to predict which parts need to be replaced – and the cost of the process – general servicing in the Kingdom can range significantly depending on the age and model of the car. Servicing can start anywhere from SAR 500 to SAR 1,500.

FAHAS inspection – used cars must undergo a FAHAS inspection every year. The cost will depend on the car size but is usually under SAR 100.

Fuel costs – fuel prices in the Kingdom tend to remain stable and affordable; in July 2023, it was reported to be around SAR 2.18 per liter.

Importing a car in Saudi Arabia

If you already own a car, you can also choose to import it into Saudi Arabia. You can only import one car into the country, and your vehicle must be younger than five years, or older than 30 years if it is a vintage. You can expect to pay a customs tax of 5% of the value of the car and 10% if it’s a truck.

To import a car, you’ll need to provide the following documents:

Valid passport and entry visa

Residence permit

Saudi driver’s license

Proof of ownership (e.g., the original title deed)

If you are sure your car can withstand the hot and arid climate of Saudi Arabia, it can be cost-effective to import it. It will save you the hassle of figuring out the car-buying landscape.

That said, many cars – especially cars not tailored for the Arabian Gulf – simply don’t last very long in the desert. Though you won’t see any rust, the undercarriage of the car may start to show damage from the heat. This could lead to increasing repairs that may end up costing more than the initial savings.

It can also take a lot of time to import a car – from finding a removal company and waiting for the car to arrive, to getting a Saudi driver’s license and registering the car. Three college students killed in Tesla Cybertruck crash in California

PIEDMONT, Cali. (KRON) – Three recent high school graduates are dead after a Tesla Cybertruck crash just outside of Oakland, California, last week.

Early Wednesday morning, the Cybertruck reportedly jumped a curb in Piedmont, crashed into a tree, and burst into flames. One person was pulled from the vehicle by a person in the vehicle behind them, according to Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers.

Authorities were alerted to the crash by an iPhone within the Cybertruck automatically alerting dispatchers, as well as neighbors who saw the flames rising from the vehicle.

Within minutes, emergency crews arrived on scene and used fire extinguishers to battle the flames. The fire was “too intense for the extinguishers,” according to Bowers. The Piedmont Fire Department was able to put out the flames a short time later.

Three young individuals – since identified as Soren Dixon, Jack Nelson, and Krysta Tsukahara by the City of Piedmont – were pronounced dead at the scene. The person pulled from the Cybertruck suffered burns and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition but has not been identified. Their current condition is unknown.

Hundreds gathered in Piedmont Friday night for a vigil honoring the victims.

Tampa Bay Rays respond to Pinellas commissioner’s letter on stadium deal

Otha Anders, the coin master, was part of the Jackson school Board as a supervisor. Children who were suspended were sent to him, and they were quite fond of him.

Anders had a wife and kids, and they support him every step of the way, but his hobby was a bit questionable…

An activity that started as a fun task, grew into a hobby, a type of obsession.

Anders believes that every penny he finds is a sign of God telling him to be grateful. On the days he didn’t pray he would almost always find a penny. According to him, that was the way God was telling him to be grateful.

While most people make a wish on a penny, Anders, as a man of faith, said prayers on it.

“I became convinced that spotting a lost or dropped penny was an additional God-given incentive reminding me to always be thankful,” Anders told USA Today. “There have been days where I failed to pray and more often than not, a lost or dropped penny would show up to remind me.”

For 45 years he stacked them in five-gallon plastic water jugs. He guessed that he stacked hundreds of thousand of dollars, but he was going to discover soon.

They brought the gallons to the bank and the employees had a fun day experiencing something they’ve never done before. They cut out the pennies out of the water jugs using a hammer and an ax. After five hours of cutting and counting on the coin-counting machine they had a number.

The total amount of pennies Anders had saved over 45 years was $5,136.14! That’s about 114.4$ per year. Who would’ve thought collecting pennies as a hobby could get an “old car” in 45 years?!

However, Anders spent his money to settle a dental bill he just received.

He was happy to spend the money on something useful. With the leftover funds he sponsored a family trip and donations to the church.

The parents of Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee, a three-year-old who died of a rare condition, are left outraged after learning their daughter’s life could be saved.

The little girl suffered from rhabdomyolysis, a disorder that breaks down muscles. She died of complications from the condition that affects one in 200,000 people in the UK.

Coroner Alan Wilson for Blackpool and Fylde determined that the doctors who treated her failed to notice the “red flags” before discharging her from the hospital after a five-day stay.

They had missed opportunities to closely examine Ryleigh’s lack of mobility prior to her discharge. She passed away three months later.

Doctors should have been aware that the girl’s deteriorating physical state could be linked with a neuromuscular problem.

According to reports, when she was admitted into Blackpool Victoria Hospital, doctors ran tests and her blood results showed abnormal readings, including ‘extraordinarily high’ levels of Creatine Kinase, likely indicating a muscle injury or disease. Despite this, doctors determined the girl suffered from a chest infection or hepatitis. She appeared slow, floppy, and lethargic.

Coroner Wilson confirmed to request evidence from the doctors involved in Ryleigh’s care at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, as reported by Blackpool Gazette.

Medical negligence attorney Diane Rostron noted, “The hospital was given clear advice… to get specialist advice from a neuromuscular specialist.”

According to Rostron, had the hospital sought specialist input, they could have “diagnosed rhabdomyolysis” and informed the family, allowing them to explore further treatment options.

On Tuesday, 22 October, on a flight from Doha to London, Qatar Airways operated the world’s first Boeing 777 aircraft equipped with Starlink in-flight connectivity. The flight marks the first Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) to be issued for operating Starlink on a Boeing aircraft.

Qatar Airways is the first carrier in the MENA region to offer passengers Starlink ultra-high-speed, low-latency inflight internet, and says it is “set to exceed” its initial target of having three Starlink-equipped aircraft operating by the end of 2024, by introducing 12 Boeing 777-300s upgraded with the service by the end of the year. Qatar Airways has further committed to rolling out the technology on its entire fleet of 64 Boeing 777 aircraft in 2025 – one year ahead of schedule – with its fleet of 58 Airbus A350s due to follow in the summer of 2025.

Engineered by SpaceX, the Starlink low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation will provide passengers reliable, high-speed internet that is capable of streaming entertainment content and live sports, or supporting online work on board. The Starlink service is free to use for all Qatar Airways passengers on equipped aircraft, and operates from gate to gate, with a simple ‘one-click-access’ procedure.

Qatar Airways’ group CEO, Engr. A crunchy chocolate bar heart STUFFED with Pistachio cream and toasted Kunafa pastry to make the most tasty copycat recipe of the viral Dubai Fix Chocolate Bar.

Ingredients

Ingredients300g of dairy-free dark chocolate
80g of dairy-free white chocolate
80g of pistachio butter
1 tablespoon of vegan / dairy-free butter
150g of Kunafa / Katafi pastry

Method (prepare the chocolate mould)

Melt the dairy-free dark chocolate until smooth. This can either be melted in a microwave in 10 second intervals or using a bain-marie over the hob.
Spoon some of the melted chocolate into your chocolate bar moulds/ hearts and spread this out so the moulds are fully coated. Make sure to go up the sides of the moulds too. Place into the freezer for 10-15 minutes or until set. Repeat a few times until the entire mould is coated and it’s a good, thick layer. For easy application, use a food grade brush.
Any excess chocolate can be kept in a warm place as we’ll be using it later.

Method (pistachio filling)

Melt the dairy-free white chocolate until smooth, then add in the pistachio butter. Mix well to combine and until fully combined.
Place a medium / large pan on the hob, turn to a medium heat and add in the butter. Allow this to melt.
Use a serrated knife to chop up the kanafa pastry. Add the pastry into the pan and cook until it all turns a deep golden brown colour. This will take around 10-15 minutes, stirring with a heat proof spatula. Then take this off the heat.
Transfer the golden pastry into a bowl then drizzle over the pistachio and white chocolate mixture. Stir to combine until all the pastry is covered.
Spoon even amounts of the filling into each mould, levelling off with a spoon. Place into the fridge for 10 minutes. chocolate to melt melt again, drizzle over the tops of the pistachio filling and cover.
Place this back into the fridge to fully set up for about 30 minutes, or freezer for 15 minutes.
Once set, remove the chocolate bars / hearts out of the moulds, then they are done.
Bite into them, break them open or cut open with a knife.
Enjoy!

To store: Keep fresh in the fridge and allow to come to room temperature for a few minutes before enjoying. Best enjoyed within 3-4 days of making.

A global IT outage has caused chaos at airports, banks, railways andbusinesses around the world as a wide range of services were taken offline and millions of people were affected.

In one of the most widespread IT crashes ever to hit companies and institutions globally, air transport ground to a halt, hospitals were affected and large numbers of workers were unable to access their computers. In the UK Sky News was taken off air temporarily and the NHS GP booking system was down.

Among the affected firms are Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, which said on its website: “Potential disruptions across the network (Fri 19 July) due to a global third party system outage … We advise passengers to arrive at the airport three hours in advance of their flight to avoid any disruptions.”

In the US, flights were grounded owing to communications problems that appear to be linked to the outage. American Airlines, Delta and United Airlines were among the carriers affected. Berlin airport temporarily halted all flights on Monday, while in Australia, Melbourne airport advised customers it was “experiencing a global technology issue which is impacting check-in procedures for some airlines”.

But other airlines and airports said they were still functioning as of 9.30am London time, although they warned passengers of delays. There’s a striking image of Princess Diana and Michael Jackson that’s always stuck with me.
At first glance, it seems like just a moment shared between two legends, but dig a little deeper, and there’s so much more to their story.
Did you know there was more to their bond than what meets the eye?
Neither Princess Diana nor Michael Jackson needs any further introduction – their iconic status speaks for itself.
It was certainly not unimaginable that these two larger-than-life personalities would meet, but few could have guessed that their encounter would lead to something more than just polite small talk…

Only met in person once

To begin with, Diana, affectionately known as ”The People’s Princess,” was a big music fan. In fact, her favorite band was reportedly Duran Duran, and she loved their music, especially during the 1980s.
However, Diana’s record collection also featured albums by Michael Jackson, which shows that she truly enjoyed his music as well. For example, she is said to have played the albums Thriller and Bad on repeat.
MJ’s music was also the reason Diana met him on July 16, 1988.
That day, she and her then-husband, Prince Charles, attended Michael Jackson’s Bad tour concert at Wembley Stadium, marking both their first and last meeting.
“She told me she was honored to meet me,” Jackson told Barbara Walters in a 1997 interview.
Michael recalled feeling incredibly nervous before shaking hands with Diana—a tension you can almost sense in the photos from that day. There was a reason their first encounter felt a bit awkward and tentative.
This was largely because the superstar had decided to remove the song “Dirty Diana” from the concert setlist, worried it might upset her. The song, which is about a rock groupie, seemed inappropriate to perform with the female royal in attendance, or so he thought.
“I took it out of the show in honor of Her Royal Highness,” Jackson told Barbara Walters in 1997.

Diana’s reaction to meeting Michael Jackson

But the move didn’t sit so well with Diana.
Diana asked Michael if he was going to perform “Dirty Diana” during the meet-and-greet before the show. He replied that he had removed it from the setlist because of her presence. However, she insisted that he perform it, encouraging him to go ahead and sing the song. Ultimately, Michael performed the song.
Michael Jackson was clearly a big fan of Diana and held a great deal of respect for her.
”I thought the princess was just wonderful,” Jackson told reporters at the time.
Knowing how much she adored her sons, Michael also gifted her two miniature tour jackets for her children, Princes William and Harry.
Diana, an avid pop music fan, was said to have danced during the whole concert while Prince Charles remained seated.

Was Michael Jackson in love with Diana?

What many might not have anticipated was that their first encounter in 1988 would ignite the start of an incredibly powerful bond.
“We were very close,” Jackson told German media in 1999. “She was extremely close by phone… I was still married to Lisa Marie [Presley]. Diana woke me up usually late at night… mostly after three in the morning! And then she held me for hours on the telephone. She talked mostly about her children, and the press.”
Michael claimed that Diana would keep him on the phone for hours.
”Lisa Marie used to get so jealous she would go into the other room, pick the receiver and listen in,” he said.
Whether or not the late-night calls truly happened remains unconfirmed. According to Diana’s friends who spoke with The Express, Jackson reportedly never had Diana’s private number. If he called Kensington Palace, staff were instructed not to connect him to the princess.
But what we do know is that the two shared similar experiences and a passion for the same causes.

Both Diana and MJ were deeply engaged in civic causes. When they first met, the humanitarian Jackson had donated $188,000 to the youth-oriented Prince’s Trust charity and an additional $126,000 to the children’s charity at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The couple also shared a similar taste in jewelry. Both Michael and Diana were clients of one of England’s leading fashion jeweler, Butler & Wilson.
But was there something deeper than just friendship and shared values?
Jackson’s former bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, confirmed the late-night calls, even claiming that the singer was “in love” with Diana.
Fiddes, who worked closely with Jackson for a decade, said:
“[Jackson] felt she was the only person in the world who could understand his life in terms of not being able to go anywhere, and the media stories that got out of hand… The intrusion into the private life, having no privacy whatsoever, the children being hounded.”

How did Michael Jackson react to Diana’s death?

What also united Michael Jackson and Princess Diana was their shared experience with paparazzi. Both were likely among the most photographed individuals for many years.
Diana was constantly in the spotlight, and her persona contrasted with the royal family always drew interest from tabloids and photographers alike. Similarly, Michael Jackson’s life story and ever-changing appearance made him a prime target for the media.
The pair are said to have remained friends until Diana’s tragic death in 1997.
When Michael learned of her passing, he was devastated. According to The Express, the news reportedly hit the star so hard that he fainted and had to be revived with smelling salts upon hearing of her passing.
He also postponed a performance on his HIStory tour. The singer was set to perform a concert in Belgium before an audience of 60,000 people, but the organizers reported that Jackson was so stunned by Diana’s death that he was unable to go on stage.
In a sad twist of fate, Diana had died just two days after Michael’s 39th birthday.
When he returned to the stage after a couple of days, he paid tribute to his late friend. He expressed, “In my heart, I was saying, ‘I love you, Diana. Shine. And shine on forever, because you are the true princess of the people.’”

Did Michael Jackson go to Diana’s funeral?

However, Michael did not attend Diana’s funeral. Instead, he went to a memorial service for her in Los Angeles, where he told reporters that he wanted to be there to “honor my friend who is no longer here… I love her.”
Dressed in black, sporting a black fedora and a red armband, Jackson arrived at the church in Los Angeles surrounded by an entourage of bodyguards. He was one of 1,000 guests in attendance.
Michael Jackson spoke fondly of Diana on several occasions after her death. In 2003, he expressed his feelings once again, calling her “one of the sweetest people I’ve ever known, because we could relate to each other.”
He continued, “We shared something in common, with the press. I don’t think they hounded anyone more than her and myself. And we had a relationship, where we would call each other late at night… just cry on each other’s shoulders, how hard and difficult and how mean the tabloids can be.”
