Living in Thailand is difficult at times, running a business here can be even worse, particularly when the locals start getting the idea that Farangs or foreigners have money and that they are Gang jai. Which means they have a good heart, that is also Thai for them thinking you are a ATM machine and a charity all rolled up into one. Recently, I took some pictures of some of my customers stores for my business, I negotiated with each one of the stores and got permission before I did so. Then I paid each store based on the highest amount from the negotiations. I have to be fare, these are my customers and I do not want anyone mad. Anyway, now I have a few of them complaining that I did not give them enough for the pictures. You can get a picture taken anywhere in Thailand for a hundred baht, but somehow these ladies think I should give them 500 now. A hundred was fine a week ago, but now it is to low. I hate it when they think that, since I am from a foreign country that I have money and they are entitled to it.

Before I post this, let me say that I understand that it is not all Thais that act like this. I have 106 daily customers but only 2 act like this. Still that being said, it is the job of the other 104 to set these people in line. You would not do this to other Thai people, so why should you do it to me.

Wow... my face is so numb! I just went to the dentist and had a filling. Speaking is hilarious because half of my face is completely useless right now hahaha .

But on a brighter side, I finally got new glasses so now I can drive well at night

My uncle is very old and he probably goes soon. I haven't seen him but my mum said he's gone very quiet and looks like he put a lot of thought into something..He doesn't speak to anybody. His wife was trying to hold his hands but he shook them off. He doesn't show any emotion..

I'm going back to my hometown tomorrow and hopefully see my uncle just in time.

I'm wondering about how he feels. Is it scary for him? Somehow I wonder what it will be like when it comes to me.

Death..is certain and it's the only thing that you can be sure about in life.

I've been reading one book called "End of life care, Improving Care of the Dying". It's about Palliative Care.

"Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

Concept of palliative care

Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms

Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process

Itends neither hasten or postpone death

Integrates the psychological and spiritual aspects of patient care

Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death

Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patients' illness and in their own bereavement

Uses team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement and counseling, if indicated

Will enhance quality of life, and may also positively influence the course of illness

Is applicable early in the course of illness, in conjunction with other therapies that are intended to prolong life, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and includes those investigations needed to better understand and manage distressing clinical complications." ( I copied this from the book)

In the book,it said that some people have some unfinished business that they would like to do before departure,such as they want to apologize some person or they are worried about people they will leave behind. The carer should assist them with their needs so that they can go peacefully.

I wonder if my uncle is ready to go..Or does he still have something in his mind that he wants to do before he goes?..I wish I'll be there on time to talk to him or break the ice for him. We are not that close but it's sad for some reason. He's in the hospital..maybe he wants to go home and just rest at his 'home'..I hope he is able to do what he wishes before the time comes.

I wonder how it would be to die, but I guess it's like to be born..You'll never know what's gonna happen..Why worry?

The little things

Even thought Thailand (and especially Bangkok) can be hectic and frustrating at times one of the reasons I love it here are those little moments that bring a smile to your face.

The other day I was at Tesco Lotus on Rama IV and I hear small footsteps coming up behind me. I look down and there's a young girl about 10 years old walking next to me. She has a beautiful smile. She looks up at me and says "Good afternoon." I didn't correct her but it was 8pm at night. I said "Hello," and smiled back at her. She said "How are you today?" I said "I'm fine. Thank you. And how are you today?" She said "I am fine. Thank you for asking." I think that exhausted her knowledge of English and she shyly snuck away.

A few moments later I hear the patter of little feet again and now she's standing there with a younger girl who I would imagine is about 7 or 8 and looks to be her sister. The younger one says "Sabai dee mai?" I say "Sabai dee." Her eyes widen in shy embarrassment. I don't know if she didn't think I would understand or if she was just shocked that she was talking to a farang.

The two of them left giggling.

No point to the story really other than I felt a bit happier the rest of the day.
