AmigaRemix.com redesign time - designer needed!

During the summer, AmigaRemix.com will be completely reworked and will be based on a new engine instead of the current one. This gives the obvious opportunity to not only change the background system, but also the frontend into something new and fresh. Because I'm a coder and no designer, I'd like some help in making it look kickass as well as I'll make it have a proper engine to run it on.

What is needed is a nice and clean design, focusing on the Amiga in a retro or futuristic way. The site will still be quite 'shallow' since it'll only be a listing of what tracks are available - apart from the submission system - which means it shouldn't be too hard to do this. I'm very fluent in CSS + XHTML, so that won't give any fuzz, but if any of you feel up for helping out with the new design, please contact me here or via the contact form on the site itself.

There really are no guidelines other than the above mentioned so the design can pretty much be in any way you create it. Just think of it as a big listing of remixes + some additional links and info and it'll be just fine. Also, make sure it's doable without TOO much graphics involved, since we want it to be lightweight as well as good looking.

...and yes, I plan to make the site skinnable (which it actually is right now as well, but I don't use it) so more than one design can 'win' this.

When I get hold of something good as a prize, I'll make sure to give that to the winning entry.

I'm not that comfortable with shameless plugs, but I told people who have asked me through the years that as soon as I was able to put together a new site of my new and old work, that I would do so. And so I have, so here it is:

So far the site contains the vast majority of my work, much of it which was created in the late '90s and early 2000's when I joined the site and began submitting remixes. It's no coincidence that my discovery of Overclocked led to what was one of my greatest periods of regular output.

The fact that I owed such a huge debt of gratitude to OCRemix and to its community members through the years for supporting, inspiring, and shaping the way I developed my sound led me to post about the site here. I searched for all of the old original remix WAVs I could find, and uploaded them in higher bitrates than I originally submitted here. As well, there are some remixes there that either didn't fit the guidelines of OCR, or ones I never quite felt polished enough to submit.

For any Youtube fans, I spent over a week creating original game captures and editing videos to some of my remixes, which to me increases the nostalgia factor tenfold. It was a ton of work but it was a great experience playing the games again and seeing Sonic snowboard down a mountain, or Mario chase a giant eel. It reminded me so much of why I loved games and game music in the first place. Link is below:

Finally, I wanted to share part of a new project I'm working on with a close friend and artist. It may somewhat be considered an original album, but the presentation will be revealed once we figure out how we will put everything together. Short version: It's a personal project of original music based on the inspiration of the amazing composers who originally got me into game music composing and remixing. It's simple, sweet, and hopefully will remind listeners of the good old days of Super NES and PS1 RPGs from which I've drawn so much inspiration through the years. And as for a new remix, Jimmy Hinson told me to work on Earthworm Jim. And I can't not listen to Jimmy Hinson now...

Thanks for reading all my crap guys! For those who don't know I lost my job of over 11 years about 3 months ago, which was especially hard for the farewells I had to say to people I've spent years working with day in and day out. The silver lining to that event was the extra time I'm having to refocus, and work on projects like this. I hope you enjoy the site, find stuff you like, and that I may continue to create stuff that you can enjoy in the future. Thanks for reading, and for lending your ears.

We're with a different host and while the site is still in the transitional phase, we're pretty much up and running and have a functional site. However, any problems should be reported to Xaleph. We lost a remix during the move but that's not so hard to put back up. The forum posts [what posts there were, anyway] are probably lost for good, but hopefully nothing too substantial was lost in the messageboards. Time to start remixing again :3

I figured I'd give you guys an extra day with this weeks theme because you'll need to listen intently to these songs. There is no method of seperating the channels for these soundtracks (that I know of at least).

THEME RESTRICTIONS - You can't do TMNT, Gradius, Lifeforce/Salamander games, and you can't do any game released post 1998. Choose a game that meets these criteria from the list below, and use BridgeM1 player to listen to the music from the rom.

This music is more layered and harder to transcribe than the console stuff, so you really should take the extra time to learn a song so you can perform/record it on Saturday.

- You can use anything you want musically. Live instruments, just MIDI, trackers. Just make sure you submit an MP3 file of whatever it is you did.
- No minimum song length requirement.
- Submission is not anonymous!

VOTING

- Voting will take place immediately after the contest. Participants get 3 votes, listeners get 2. Pick your top three songs and to your first place go 3 points, second place go 2 points, third place goes 1 point. Listeners get to pick top two songs, with 2 points going to first place, 1 point going to second.

The goal of this project was to create a set of deeply sampled acoustic drumkits inspired by classic 50s, 60s and 70s records and the timeless breakbeats we all know and love. For decades, these sounds have been imitated and sampled over and over, but many producers have preferred to try and capture old kits with pristine, modern recording methods. Not so with this library. Our motto was "the more tubes, the better," and we armed ourselves to the teeth with beat-up mics, analog gear, vintage drums and tape machines.

A little about the kits...

---
"Superfreak" (Milkboy Studios, Ardmore, PA) - As the name suggests, most of this 60s Ludwig 'Silver Comet' kit is rumored to have originally belonged to a certain funk music icon. The drums were recorded using high-end ribbon mics into an all-analog signal path, most notably a 70s Neve console with a few busted channels and lots of character. Outboard processors in the chain included gear by Empirical Labs, Tube-Tech, and Anthony DeMaria Labs. The saturation present on the higher velocities of some of the sounds, like the kick and snare, came solely from high gain running through all the tubes; no overdrive, distortion, or compressor saturation was applied!

"Tape" (The Audio Lab, Milville, NJ) - This one was a real hybrid, the centerpiece being a 30s Ludwig Pioneer Black Beauty snare. The kicks and toms were Tamburo original series, along with an extra 22" Tama kick. Our hats, cymbals and rides were a mishmash of faded, junked up old metal… just what we wanted. Everything in the kit was recorded through an analog signal path then finally to an authentic, 24-track Otari tape machine before being dumped into Pro Tools. Mics used for this kit ranged in age and manufacturer. Various workhorse mics from EV, Sennheiser, Shure and Audix were used throughout, and to get the trashy, crunchy room sound, we used a trashy 70s General Electric cassette recorder mic along with an RCA SK-30.

"Herodotus" (Real Music Media, Minneapolis, MN)) - John Gump (a.k.a. KVRAudio member Herodotus) recorded this drum set, which is the same make and model as Cream drummer Ginger Baker's drums! Mics used were a pair of Neumann KM-184s and Sennheiser 441s plus a Royer R-121. All of this went into some serious outboard gear like a classic UA 1176, Manley Labs VOXBOX, UA 2-610S and Manley Vari-Mu before finally going to a TASCAM reel-to-reel tape machine to seal the deal.

Radio ThaSauce Live -- On Hiatus for Now

It's with regret that I must announce that Radio ThaSauce Live is on hiatus for the next two to three weeks. I'm going through a huge phase in my life right now, I'm moving out of the house I've called home for the last 8 years of my life. Thus, I'm in the midst of packing up my belongings, throwing out what I don't need, and trying to get organized for this move. Therefore, I will not have much, if any time, to actually sit down and do the show. However, I do have some VERY exciting news for you!

When I return in mid to late June, my shows will be longer, though continuing on saturdays, they will be at least 4 hours long. I will also be looking for a few good co-hosts at that time. The next planned time off will be Otakon 2009 since I will be in attendance, and of course, at the OverClocked Remix Panel and of course JamSpace/Club Otaku.
What can you expect in June? Longer shows for one. A live video feed! Also, I'm planning on purchasing some DJing gear in the near future, so keep it locked to Radio ThaSauce Live, as I may very well be doing a live mix show at some point!

Thanks to everyone who's been listening in faithfully since the beginning. What's coming up promises to be fantastic!

OverClocked ReMix StarCraft Tournament

Ok guys! I was saying the other day on IRC that we should have a small-potatoes SC tournament, and even offered to donate 20 dollars for a prize (either cash or whatever you guys would deem appropriate)! I was hearing that there is already some interest (most notably Nekofrog, Tensei-san, and Battousai) and wanted to see if there were other folks who'd want to get in on something like this.

I was figuring that we could even record the replays with commentary if people were comfortable having other folks watch their games... even though I doubt many of us here are really "good enough" to warrant actually having a VOD, it'd be nice to see our own flaws and compare strats.

What do you guys think? You can message me on IRC or Steam (add me: https://steamcommunity.com/id/garianse) but please not here because I hardly ever check my messages or email.

Update May 22:
It seems most people want to have two tourneys, a 1v1 series and a 2v2 series pairing people by their skill. Each round of the tournament will be decided by a best of 3 matches. I'm thinking that we should maybe aim for a mid-to-late June date to begin playing, but I don't want that to be set in stone until we've got some more of the details hammered out. If you're wanting to "sign up," go ahead and make a post with the race you play and the name you'll be playing under. Check this post for future updates!

Nerdapalooza; Summer MAGFest? Well kinda...

Most people know by now that I've been a resident of Florida all my life, and that I moved to Orlando a few years ago to attend Full Sail University's Computer Animation Bachelors of Science Degree problem. Since I didn't have a car I lived pretty close to campus, and I got pretty familiar with the surrounding area in the Comic Shop down the street. It was through this comic shop that I got to meet one of my favorite musicians, as well as learned about Nerdapalooza where myf (aka Mythril Nazgul) would be performing just a few days later.

I planned to walk the 8 miles it'd take to get there if I couldn't find a ride, and luckily I did find a ride, because 8 miles is a lot longer than it seems on MapQuest. When I got there I was greeted by myf himself, along with DJ Snyder of the Grammar Club, who happened to be sitting with MC Frontalot and Schaffer the Darklord. Kind of intense stuff, really. Until then I'd only heard/seen MC Frontalot through Penny Arcade and G4, but now he's sitting in front of me. Inside I saw ytcracker going through songs on his laptop and I met artists like Random and Zealous1 and was completely blown away. I had no idea that Orlando was so rich with nerd culture (though I suppose I should) and I was told by quite a few people that it was getting bigger every day.

Well now Nerdapalooza 2009 is coming up, and it's bigger than ever. So big that mc chris has already been confirmed as a guest, as well as Beefy and Shael Riley of the Grammar Club in their first ever live performance. Suzu and starla are making serious attempts to come join the awesome, rumor has it AE might be making an appearance, and I've recently heard via twitter that OCR may be cooking something up as well. You can bet ThaSauce'll be out in full force, but what about you?

Nerdapalooza is the closest thing to a summer MAGFest we have going right now. A mid-year nerd gathering with more music than you can handle.

8-Bit Extravaganza will host a new podcast dedicated to free video game music, be it original soundtracks, arrangements, remixes, or simply music related to video games. The goal of this show is to be a source for listeners to learn about the many and varied VGM artists.
To that end, sources of free VGM are needed! Please send links with free VGM as described above to radiofreegamer@gmail.com. As many sources as possible are needed, so please send what you have. If you are a VGM artist yourself and would like to be featured or interviewed on the show, please email us.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to talk to Danny Baranowsky about an upcoming game project for which he was writing music for. Well, I didn't have to wait too long, and now have had the opportunity to bring to you news of what appears to be an excellent game, with most excellent music.

Dwelling of Duels, hosted by VGMix is a community wide compo where the main instrument must be played live. This attracts a variety of talent and often produces amazing results. New ReMixing Site in the Works

Hi,

Even though I've been following the remixing community for close to fifteen years, believe it or not, this is my first post here. I'd like to call people's attention to remixSite, a new video game music site I've designed with the significant help of several others.

I started out trying to learn symfony and JQuery, then attended some video game music concerts, and somehow ended up with an entire website for originals and arrangements of game music.

The site allows users to post either final versions of songs or works in progress, which are indicated by a separate flag. Songs can be rated and reviewed, and artists can post updates to songs (for example, a better quality sample or a remade passage). You can associate your songs to original tracks and search to find if others have remixed those tracks.

Take a look at http://test.remixsite.org and see for yourself. The site needs further testing and I wouldn't consider it worthy of production use until people have messed around with it a bit more. Feel free to upload some songs and post comments. There is a bug tracking system set up and feature requests are welcome.

remixSite is not designed to compete with Overclocked Remix, as it has a different structure and has no judging criteria. In fact, if people are interested in remixSite, I would prefer to work with community members to integrate it with the various music sites, instead of, for example, creating yet another forum.

In a short conversation in #ocremix everyone had a lot of different opions. Some people questioned the need for yet another site, while others embraced the idea of a functional idea solution to what VGMix has been trying to do for about 3 years.

I agree the site does a much better job filling the VGMix-esque niche and has a pretty different mission than that of OverClocked ReMix or ReMix:ThaSauce. Right now it has some fancy AJAX modules and some nifty effects (with problems of their own); the VGMdb integration is particularly nice, however I feel it's just not far enough into the project to form any real opinions.

And finally: I think it's particularly important to note that this site promotes synergy (like a boss).

The University of Maryland Gamer Symphony Orchestra will hold its Spring 2009 concert on Saturday, May 9th at 3PM in the Dekelboum Concert Hall at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. Admission is FREE, and the event is family friendly! Recently I was informed about a very cool and much needed endeavor. It is an awesome new streaming web radio site dedicated to every type of video game inspired music. The aptly titled 8bitfm is that site, and you can head over there and listen right now to find plenty of nerdcore, VG rock, chiptunes, remixes, and even lots of straight VGM compositions. So they definitely have it all, no matter what type of VG inspired tunes you enjoy! They also have a few daily radio shows for different genres.

The site just started up but it looks like they are doing everything right to become a great musical source in the community, so definitely listen in and keep an eye on these folks!

Admittedly, ever since I've noticed that internet radio is pretty much all starla listens to, I've really been warming up to the idea again. Back in the day I used to listen to pretty much exclusively video game music radio and OverClock's old streamin radio before ormgas came over and took that over.

That said...I've been listening to this all morning now =P

So I braved the awful flight to Cleveland [and Cleveland itself] for Blockparty, which is hosted by Notacon, met up with virt, necros, a handful of people from #mod_shrine, and we just nerded it up for a full weekend. Consumed gallons of cocaine, coded java on cell phones, listened to Gargaj regale stories of demoparties gone by, and had probably the worst "home cooked italian" food in all of Cleveland. All in all, except for the whole Cleveland part, fun times were had. I even got 6th in the allgear music compo! Hoohah!

Radio ThaSauce Live -- No Show Saturday!

Because of vacation, I will not be able to host the radio show saturday. My apologies to everyone who's been listening faithfully. I have taken to the road to travel to the distant state of...wait for it... Delaware. I'm away visiting friends, and unfortunately, did not feel appropriate dragging my desktop with me, along with my recording gear. And though my laptop is pretty new, it's not been very able with recording voice, or anything of the like.
Therefore, there will be no show this week. HOWEVER!!!

Tune in Saturday, May 2nd for the next exciting installment of Radio ThaSauce Live!! Next weekend will be a two hours show as usual, followed by an after show which will have no end point. It only ends when people start to log off for the night. I'll have plenty of news, music and events for you, and I'll even talk about my trip!

New ReMix Comment/Review Presentation on OCReMix

During the last show, I announced that I was going to be moving the show from Fridays to Saturdays, at the same time slot, because of a pending adjustment in my work schedule. Well, this coming friday was supposed to be the last show before that happened, HOWEVER, because of an invite to a baseball game, specifically the first Phillies game since the passing of beloved personality, and legendary announcer, Harry Kalas, I will not be hosting the show Friday night, rather, I will be moving it pre-emptively to Saturdays starting this week. This should work out in your favor if you've been wanting to listen in to the show.
Expect the same fun, weird requests, humor and news that you've come to see from me so far. I'm still hopeful that I will be able to take live callers and live call in requests in the near future.

The new site features an improved RSS feed as well as Digg, StumbleUpon and Twitter integration with every post and guide, better organized post tags/categories, and a non-default WordPress graphical theme.

I decided to try my hand at doing one of those customized debit cards from my credit union. I uploaded one of my wallpapers and cropped it and submitted it. I really didn't hold any hope that they'd print it, because they're pretty strict about what you can and cannot have on your card. Really, this should not have passed, but, for some reason...it did.
Either the person approving card designs wasn't paying attention and didn't realize what it was, or they knew what it was and agreed with the awesomeness!

April is Support OCR Month 2009

Last year, djpretzel mentioned in a write-up that “Sometimes, because of our content policy, our LLC status, the amount of content on the site, or any number of things, people mistakenly think that we're an actual business that has ample resources and makes money, etc. This is not the case - money from all our ads, shirt sales, and donations combined only barely breaks even these days due to the operational cost of hosting the site. In other words, we always need whatever help you can provide.”

The same holds true this year as well. Before I get right to it, however, I’d like to cover a few points. OverClocked ReMix has experienced some tremendous growth in the last year - I think it’s fair to say that none of the “old-timers” ever anticipated how popular it would become or the impact it would have on so many people on so many levels. With Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, we managed to make our way into a major video game franchise, we’ve gotten a lot of positive attention online and through events like Video Games Live, and we’re receiving an ever increasing number of submissions from both aspiring and renowned musicians from all over the world. Why does any of this matter? The larger the site grows, the more resources it takes to keep moving forward.

Many of you will remember that this time last year, I unofficially declared April to be “Support OCR Month”. It seemed appropriate, since the site was not only officially standing on its own two legs, but was growing rapidly, with the cost of things like bandwidth and hosting quickly outgrowing the limited funds generated from T-shirts, stickers, hoodies, and ads. Whether you've personally downloaded one or all of the remixes that are hosted here, enjoyed any of the album projects, made it to a meet-up or convention and had a blast, played a game online with friends you’ve made here, learned a skill you didn’t have before, improved a skill or ability, helped someone else in the same way, sit and spent minutes or hours and hours on the forums, or any combination of these things etc, that's all made possible by djp's continued work on the site and our ability to make such resources available. This year’s A1 gag was great, but it’s not entirely unrealistic—that is, the possibility of losing the battle to site operating costs and watching the site disappear. In fact, though we aren't quite in dire straights, we walk closer to that ledge than many people think.

Hey! Listen! volume 3 mixtape from Game Music 4 All

I am very happy to announce volume 3 in a monthly series of 5 song "mixtapes" from GM4A. The series is called Hey! Listen! and asks you to do just that! Check out the first mixtape page for info about how this mixtape series works. We are bringing you an extra heavy dose of VG rock on this album from the likes of Chile based ThePlasmas as well as East Coast rockers Rare Candy! Not only that, but we have a great laid back VG remix from all around nerd musician sli, and some great nerdcore hip hop from hiphopmcdougal. We top it all off with a beautiful closing song from NES Rock newcomers I Fight Dragons. All this is wonderfully labeled with artwork by good friend Leo Camacho. Well don't just sit there, dig in!

About the artwork:
The artwork is a remixed version of an art piece titled "The Unusual Suspects." The artwork was created last minute by Leo Camacho (who will be next months artist as well), so huge thanks to him on putting something great together on only a few days notice! Sadly we had our original artist have to drop off the project due to family affairs, but best of luck to her, and hope to have her on a future album!

Dwelling of Duels at VGMix - April - 8 Bit vs 16 Bit Month

Dwelling of Duels, hosted by VGMix is a community wide compo where the main instrument must be played live. This attracts a variety of talent and often produces amazing results. Every month, a theme is chosen which must be followed. Participants have one month to complete their tracks, songs are voted for on the last day of every month.

Current Duel

This month is 8-bit systems vs. 16-bit systems. All entries must choose a side and play songs that were originally written for a game on a system from that side (NES, Sega Master System, SNES, Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, etc.)
For simplicity's sake, we will limit this to actual consoles and not allow handhelds (like the Game Boy) or PC models (like the MSX). Songs are due on Sunday, April 26th at 9:30 PM Eastern US time. irc.vgmix.com #dod listening party to be held Monday, April 27th at 9:30 PM Eastern.

Pilotwings ReMix in Game Informer Article

Yesterday, Game Informer posted an article on the Pilotwings franchise, trying to entice Nintendo to produce a Wii generation version. At the very end, they mention the style of music which should be included in a new rendition of the series, highlighting OCR's very own (and only Pilotwings mix) Midnight Altitude.

GM4A posts Interview with Nicole Adam's & injury

So I'm admittedly pretty late on this one, as I've been pretty swamped with company the past few weeks, BUT genoboost over at GameMusic4All has a really great interview with OCR's newest female remixer, and long time community member, Nicole Adams and OCR's very first remixer: injury.
About a year ago I had the pleasure of running across Nicole Adam's music via myspace and was immediately amazed by the music she had there. I soon asked her if she would like to contribute a track to the 2nd GM4A anniversary compilation Welcome to World 2. She was kind enough to agree and submitted the song Permutation for the album, and I was of course blown away by how well it was all done. Another thing I was amazed by was that she worked with Starla AKA injury of OCReMix fame who provided her amazing voice and handled lyric duties on the song verses. Together they created a sweeping arrangement of the Donkey Kong Country song Fear Factory which has been the highlight of the album for many people.

Flash forward a few months and now the song Permutation is featured on OCReMix and has been getting some great reviews. Due to the slightly momentous event I decided to shoot some questions to Nicole Adams to discuss what it is like to have her first song on OCR, and also Injury, who has returned to OCR with this song after a lengthy hiatus. I also took this opportunity to ask them about their music influences, upcoming projects and more. Radio ThaSauce Live

Over the past few weeks, I've been hosting a makeshift radio show called Radio ThaSauce Live. I play requests, talk about news, and generally have a good time with it. So far, I've had quite a few listeners, but I'm ready for some more. I think the show is great, and a lot of people who've listened to it like it. So I wanted to get the word out that I'm continuing onward with it.

So let's give you some stats on the show itself. It started about six weeks ago, back in February, when VGM: Very Good Music aired its last show. About two weeks after that, I started up Radio ThaSauce Live, first with a pilot episode to test out how things would run, and then finally the following week, and subsequently, with weekly shows that run at least 2 hours, sometimes more.

I've had at least 14 unique listeners since I switched from StickAM, which was the original site I was using for streaming, to the new and much more reliable (so far) Ustream.tv. Ustream has the same principle idea as StickAM, but presents it much, much more easily than StickAM.

I look forward to each and every new show, and I plan on doing themed nights where I focus on either a single scene, for example "retro remix night" and "compo night" which were themed appropriately, and featured music from Remix.Kwed.Org and Compos: ThaSauce. These nights were especially fun because I could cut loose with music many haven't heard in awhile, or even before.

So to continue this new tradition of playing awesome tunes, and having loads of fun, I'm going to be broadcasting for as long as I, or my sanity, can take it. Which, for you, should be a long time! I've also found, through exploration, that I can embed both video and chat from the site onto another site. So look for an easier to use interface in the near future!

Showtime is Friday night at 8pm Eastern, every friday. Now, please keep in mind, my work schedule is changing, so I will be changing the show's night from Friday to Saturday to compensate, because I want this show to continue on and I don't plan on stopping any time soon!

The date of the first saturday show will be Saturday May 2nd, at 8pm Eastern. For those of you in another time zone, I will help you out a bit by giving you a rundown of US time zones and zones in Hawaii, London and Stockholm.
