Welcome to another TTT! Today’s topic is: April Showers. There’s a lot of different directions to go with this topic: rainy day reads, books with rainstorm scenes, books that make you cry, books that give you happy tears, books to wash away a bad reading experience, books set in rainy places, books with rain/raindrops/umbrellas on the cover, blue book covers, etc. I decided to go with rainy book covers! You know how much I love a good book cover, so of course this is where my brain went!

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic was submitted by Susan @ blogginboutbooks.com and is: Book Titles That Describe Me/My Life. To get the gears turning, here are some ideas: Hotshot Doc could describe you if you’re an awesome doctor, Falling into Place could describe a life where things are starting to work out, An Infinite Love Story could describe your relationship, and It Could Have Been Her could describe a thing you’re happy you avoided or a path you could have taken but didn’t. You can explain your choices or not, and they can be as specific or as abstract as you’d like. This is such a fun topic, and I’m excited to see what everyone picks and how creative you get with it!

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is: Books About/Set In Places on My Bucket List and was submitted by Rachel @ Sunny Side. This topic is made for me! I love traveling, and my bucket list of places I’d like to visit it extremely long (I had to limit myself to these ten because I could have kept going). I’ve been to many amazing places, and will be excluding those from my list this week even though I’d love to return to all of them someday! This list is a mix of older and newer titles (some are even upcoming releases). I’ll put an asterisk by the ones I’ve read. All the others are from my TBR!

Welcome to another TTT! This week’s topic is: Buzzwords or Phrases That Make Me Want to Read (or Avoid) a Book. These words or phrases can be in the title, synopsis, marketing materials, reviews, author blurbs, etc. and immediately pique your interest or immediately make you say “NOPE”. I decided to pick ten of each today because WHY NOT!?

Makes Me Want to Read a Book

Fake Dating/Engagement/Marriage
My favorite romance trope ever. Add this to a book and I am there.

Anything that alludes to a book’s level of cozy
I love cozy fantasies, but I also love books that are described as a warm cup of cocoa, worthy of being read under a blanket, taking place in small cafes or shops, low-stakes, relaxing, etc.

Stranded/lost/survival
Give me people who have been in a plane crash, have been shipwrecked, are lost in the wilderness, etc. and need to survive in the elements (and maybe fall in love with each other) and I’m excited.

Snowed in
I love a snowed in romance.

Atmospheric/Spooky
Spooky season is one of my favorite reading times because I love slightly chilly, spine-tingling reads that don’t keep me up all night in terror but give me that slight anxiety when I hear my cat run down the hall.

Dragons
I really love dragons.

Pirates
One of my first loves was a pirate hero in a romance novel, and I have loved pirate romances ever since.

Italy (but any country abroad, pretty much)
I love armchair traveling! Italy, Paris, Ireland, and Scotland are my favorites but I’m up for anywhere that’s not here!

Espionage/Spies
So exciting!

Christmas
Holiday romances give me so much joy.

Makes Me Want to Avoid a Book

Surprise pregnancy/baby
I just cannot.

Enemies to lovers
I have a very hard time watching a couple bicker and fight for the bulk of a story.

Any mention of a beloved pet
Unless I know FOR SURE that that pet survives the book with no harm or danger. I’ve been traumatized by books in the past, so it’s sad I have had to become so scared of books that mention animals in the synopsis. But that’s what I have to do to protect my mental health. Otherwise I will be anxious for the entire book.

Demons
I’m not going there!

Angels
I never like angel characters. Angels are never portrayed the way I want them to be.

“For fans of Nicholas Sparks”
His books are never happy! And people seem to think he writes romance, but his books are not romances!

Heart-wrenching
Again, I want to be happy!

Alpha/Pack

“Why Choose” Romance
Just not for me!

If you’ve been with me a while, you might remember my rave review of The Caged Graves by Dianne K. Salerni. My friend was gushing about it at work one day and offered to let me borrow her library copy. I loved it! I have always loved Gothic stories that combine romance and mystery, and that’s what you’re getting if you choose to pick this one up. It’s YA in nature and content, but it reads like adult historical fiction so it’s a great crossover story for all ages. I saw The Caged Graves fall off the market a few years ago and always wondered what happened. I decided to write to Dianne and see where it went. To my delight, she decided to self publish it after getting her rights back when her old publisher was acquired and it went live on Amazon this month!

It’s my pleasure to welcome Dianne to the blog today to share a little bit about her experiences with self publishing throughout her career. I love learning about how authors get started, and I had fun to get to know Dianne a little better!

Dianne K. Salerni’s Journey with Self Publishing

This month I was delighted to upload The Caged Graves to Amazon Kindle. The Caged Graves was my second novel, originally published by Clarion Books in 2013. It went out of print a few years ago, and when the rights returned to me, I decided to self-publish it. What many people don’t know is this isn’t my first foray into self-publishing.

My career as an author began with a self-published novel titled High Spirits: A Tale of Ghostly Rapping and Romance which launched in May of 2007, several months before Amazon introduced their first Kindle. E-books weren’t yet a thing when High Spirits came out. Self-publishing at that time meant paying a company to create print-on-demand copies of your manuscript. It was costly, and it also meant accepting the black cloud that clung to self-publishing. We called ourselves “Indie Authors,” but people still tended to back away slowly when they found out how our works came to exist.

In spite of that stigma, my book did well enough to catch the attention of Sourcebooks. They were launching a new YA imprint, Sourcebooks Fire, and they offered a deal to re-publish High Spirits with a new edit and a new title. Subsequently, We Hear the Dead released in 2010. I became a traditionally published author, and most of the time I told people We Hear the Dead was my first book because self-publishing had such a bad reputation.

Nowadays, self-publishing is easy, free, and a lot more respected than it used to be. It’s time to stop hiding my firstborn, High Spirits. I know now that it was too wordy, and the We Hear the Dead version is better thanks to the guidance of a professional editor. But it existed, and I might not be an author today without it.

DIANNE K SALERNI is the author of YA and middle grade fiction, including The Caged Graves, The Eighth Day, and The Carrefour Curse. She enjoys creepy cemeteries, ghost hunting classes, climbing ancient pyramids, and serving the feline overlords at her local animal shelter.

“In Catawissa, sometimes the dead don’t stay where you put them.”

The year is 1867, and seventeen-year-old Verity Boone is returning to her birthplace in Catawissa, Pennsylvania after fifteen years away. She is excited to meet her betrothed, a young man she knows only through his charming letters, and only slightly apprehensive about reuniting with a father she barely remembers. Verity expects the transition from the city life of Worcester, Massachusetts, where she was raised by distant relatives after the death of her mother, to the rural farmlands of Catawissa will be a challenge. But she did not anticipate just how distant and aloof her father would be, how unwelcoming his house, and she did not expect her future husband, Nate, to be as bumbling in person as he was eloquent on paper. Did he even write the letters himself?

Even worse awaits her in the town cemetery where Verity finds the graves of her mother and an aunt she never knew isolated from the rest, in unsanctified ground, and surrounded by iron cages. No one, not even her father, will tell her the full story behind this shameful interment, and everyone admonishes her to leave well enough alone and focus on her upcoming marriage. But Verity stubbornly pursues the truth, which leads her into troubling aspects of local history, including a legendary treasure in gold coins and gruesome “incidents” in the cemetery.

If Verity isn’t careful, she might end up in a grave of her own.

Welcome to another TTT! And happy spring! We hardly got a winter where I live. We broke so many seasonal records for crazy high temps and lack of snow this past winter, and spring has come in like a whirlwind. It’s warm and we’re running the AC, and my head is spinning because sometimes we’re still getting snow in June.

This week’s topic is Books On My Spring 2026 To-Read List. On a personal note, this first quarter of the year has been hard. I’ve been in a horrible reading slump. I’m very behind on my Goodreads goal for the year, my blog is being mostly neglected except for TTT, and there are a lot of unknowns for me right now. I got some news from my doctor last week that has me quite distraught and reading is very far from my mind, although I do read for about 25 minutes before going to sleep at night. Nothing is really holding my attention or distracting me from my racing inner thoughts, so the idea of writing up a list of books I hope to read over the next few months feels more difficult than it usually does. Instead of listing out my TBR, I’ve decided to share some books I’m excited to get to when I feel more like myself again (hence the title of my post). I’m disregarding any review commitments and release dates and just sharing the books I’m excited about.

If All Else Sails by Emma St. Clair

In this enemies-to-lovers romance, school nurse Josie and her brother’s best friend–hockey player Wyatt Jacobs–are tricked into spending a summer together that’s anything but smooth sailing.

When Josie’s brother sends her to a random address for their (sometimes) annual Super Summer Sibling Extravaganza, she finds neither siblings nor extravaganzas. Instead, ends up at a run-down cottage on the Northern Neck of Virginia occupied by a hockey player she knows and loathes.

A hockey player who isn’t just one of her sports agent brother’s clients. He’s also his best friend. And Josie’s sworn enemy.

Oh–and her brother wants Josie to help Wyatt recover from his injury.

Dragging grumpy hockey players to physical therapy is a far cry from bandaging skinned knees, but for the price her brother offers to pay, Josie is willing to try.

Even if it means sharing what she dubs the quaint little murder cottage with Wyatt.

Begrudgingly, Josie starts to see a little more of the man behind the grumpy exterior. And when she finds out he was supposed to sail the Intracoastal Waterway south to Savannah scattering his uncle’s ashes, Josie surprises even herself by offering to be Wyatt’s first mate.

Smooth sailing is nowhere to be found, and Josie begins to wonder if they’ll be able to make it home without killing–or kissing?–each other.

And yet, the longer they share cramped quarters and canned food, the more of Wyatt’s layers she peels back until Josie realizes she misunderstood him, their shared history, and perhaps herself as well.

Darling Daffodils Farm by Brittanee Nicole

Prepare to fall in love amongst the wildflowers this spring. . .

From the romance superstar author of The Boston Bolts hockey series comes a rivals-to-lovers, grumpy-sunshine romance about a young woman returning to her family’s daffodil farm only to find someone unexpected running her daddy’s business.

They say you can never tame a wildflower…

When aspiring pastry chef, Tally Darling, returns home to her family’s daffodil farm, the last thing she expects to find is a hot—half-naked—farmhand living in her childhood bedroom and running her late daddy’s business.

Jesse Walker might be gorgeous but he’s also infuriatingly grumpy. Walker has no time for Tally and the feeling is mutual.

That is, until Tally hears him moan over one of her signature salted honey cupcakes. And then discovers how good it tastes when they kiss.

As dewy April days turn into warm May evenings, Walker and Tally soon realize that there is a thin line between love and hate. But will their budding connection grow into something that lasts beyond one season?

No one betrays the Academy. But now Euphemia must decide: break the rules for her enemy, or let the rules break her heart.

On the outskirts of London sits a seemingly innocuous institution with a secretive aim—train young women to distract, disrupt, and discredit the patriarchy. Outraged by a powerful politician’s systematic attack on women’s rights, the Academy summons its brightest—and most bitter—pupil to infiltrate the odious man’s inner circle. A deal is struck: bring down the viscount, and Miss Euphemia Flite will finally earn her freedom.

But betting shop owner Gabriel Royce has other plans. The viscount is the perfect pawn to insulate Gabriel’s underworld empire from government interference. He’s not about to let some crinoline-clad miss destroy his carefully constructed enterprise—no matter how captivating he finds her threats.

From the rookeries of St. Giles to the ballrooms of Mayfair, Euphemia and Gabriel engage in a battle of wits and wills that’s complicated by a blossoming desire. Soon Euphemia realizes it’s not the broken promises to her Academy sisters she should fear. . . . It’s the danger to her heart.

Little Sowerby, England, 1802

Miss Genevieve Wilde—a magistrate’s daughter and independent heiress—is determined to meet life’s challenges all on her own, just as her late father had taught her. So when her father’s pocket watch is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, especially when the local authorities prove incompetent.

Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. It’s a choice Ginny regrets when former Bow Street officer Jack Travers arrives on her doorstep. He is frustratingly flirtatious, irritatingly handsome, and entirely unpredictable, and Ginny wonders if she’ll be able to resist such a man.

But after Ginny discovers that the missing watch is just a small part of a larger, more frightening plot against her, she needs Jack’s help more than ever. To protect her home and her reputation, the two enter into a risky charade—pretending Jack is her cousin so he can begin his investigation, starting with the household staff. As they work together to unravel the mystery, Ginny finds herself falling fast for her charismatic thief-taker, leaving her heart in just as much danger as her life.

One Season to discover love where they least expect it.

Tristan Shepherd never expected the London Season to throw him back into the path of Caroline Whitby—the spirited girl from his youth who once declared she detested both him and his horses. But when a single careless remark at a glittering ball damages Caroline’s prospects with a promising suitor, she lays the blame squarely at Tristan’s feet.

Determined to make amends—and needing a wife himself—Tristan offers marriage. Caroline flatly refuses. Still, with the Season slipping away, they strike an uneasy bargain: he’ll help her find a husband, and she’ll help him secure a bride.

But as they navigate crowded ballrooms, stolen moments, and the dangerous game of matchmaking, their sparring gives way to a far more perilous discovery: the one match they both swore was impossible might be the only one they truly desire.

Clue meets Indiana Jones with a fiction-loving twist only Grace Percy can provide.

From an assortment of untrustworthy adventure-seekers to a newly discovered tomb with a murderous secret, Frederick and Grace must lean on each other to navigate their dangerous surroundings. As the suspects mount in an antiquities’ heist of ancient proportions, will Frederick and Grace’s attempts to solve the mystery lead to another death among the sands?

Sarah Beth Durst brings cozy fantasy romance to the high seas in Sea of Charms, the third magical adventure in the New York Times bestselling Spellshop series!

Marin had always belonged on the great blue sea. When the man she thought was the love of her life schemed to ruin her parents’ business, she did what her heart knew she fled to the sea.

Now working as a supply runner on her own boat, Marin sails from island to island, delivering a varied array of letters, flour, stories, and even the occasional enchanted statue. It’s a lonely life, but it’s hers. Besides, she’s got the company of Perri the sea serpent and Ree the sailor shrub. They’re the best crew she could ask for.

On one of her routine trips to the capital of the Crescent Islands Empire, Alyssium, Marin finds the city on fire and a revolution underway—so she offers transportation to Dax, a composer friend who refuses to leave behind his instruments. What starts as a rescue evolves into a Marin will keep Dax on as a (temporary) member of her crew if he becomes her pretend boyfriend at the End-of-Harvest Festival back home.

Against her better judgment, Marin finds herself intrigued by his stubbornness, his passion for stories, his charming smile—and realizes that perhaps she isn’t saving him. Maybe it’s the other way around.

Sea of Charms is a cozy fantasy romance about finding your crew, your family, and moreover, finding yourself.

Read in whatever order your heart desires, but don’t miss The Spellshop and The Enchanted Greenhouse.

A woman tests the limits of her so-called amicable divorce when she flies to Paris for the destination wedding of her former sister-in-law, only to butt heads with the deliciously gruff best man, in a poignant and romantic novel from Kate Clayborn.

Physician Layla Bailey has spent over a year telling herself she’s moved on from a painful but amicable divorce from her college sweetheart. Staying friends with her ex seemed like the mature thing to do, but when Layla is invited to her former sister-in-law’s destination wedding in Paris—where Layla once spent her own romantic honeymoon—she knows her commitment to maturity might be her worst enemy…especially since her ex isn’t attending alone.

The only thing that could make the week more difficult is getting through it without the distraction of the wedding…. But when what Layla thought was a harmless conversation about the choices of her younger self leads to the bride getting cold feet, Layla finds herself facing down the groom’s mysterious, taciturn best man, Griffin, who will do anything to make sure this wedding happens.

Since she broke it, Griff demands she help him fix it. Going along with his plan to alleviate the engaged couple’s doubts seems like Layla’s best chance at maintaining a good relationship with a family she once called her own. But as she learns more about the past heartbreak that’s driving Griff to help his friend, she gets closer and closer to confronting the true depth of her own pain…while finding herself more and more willing to risk it all again for Griff.

Sometimes the perfect gift is standing right in front of you. . . You’re just too stubborn to see it.

I don’t like to make mistakes. Ever.

Especially when those mistakes are witnessed by the same person—flirty Finn Holbrook—who can’t seem to leave me alone. Can I really trust him not to tell anyone that the night we met, I tried to kiss him? Or that I fell apart after I got fired from a job I loved? Or that I’m not as strong as I want everyone to think I am?

The simple fact that he’s boomeranged back into my orbit after all these years feels like a great, big cosmic joke.

Only now he’s a professional hockey player, and while he doesn’t look like the goofy college bartender I met all those years ago, he still acts like one—immature, flirty, and unable to take anything seriously.

Which is why I never, ever fall for his game.

I know better than to get swept up in romance. I don’t have time. I’m busy making myself irreplaceable in my new job with the Chicago Comets. Work isn’t just something I do, it’s who I am.

And while my sisters are constantly on me to slow down and take breaks, those things aren’t on my schedule, so . . . I push on. Do more. Load up my schedule. Overcommit. Until eventually, my stress lands me in the emergency room.

The prescription? A month off. No emails. No work. No distractions.

Unless you count Finn Holbrook, who keeps showing up at my door, determined to leverage his positive, golden retriever energy to show me there’s a great, big world outside that I haven’t bothered to explore, most of it covered with white twinkle lights and Christmas decorations.

I begrudgingly go along with his grand plans, and little by little, I start to see there really is more to life than work—and more to Finn than flirting.

Which makes me wonder . . . how can someone so obviously wrong for me start to feel completely right? And more importantly . . . how do I make those feelings go away?

My Merry Mistake is an opposites attract hockey romance with all of the sizzle but none of the steam. It’s the third book in the Holidays with Hart series, but can be read as a stand alone.

Going Overboard by Portia MacIntosh

That ship has sailed… right?

Jessa is happily cruising through life – until her boyfriend Todd dumps her, out of the blue, at a wedding, during the first dance. She doesn’t know it but just across the room, cricket superstar Brody is also being blindsided by his girlfriend, Nikki. It suddenly makes sense in the days that follow – Todd and Nikki are now together.

Jessa wants to crawl under a rock, but with her best friend’s destination wedding on a cruise to Sicily – and her ex and his new girlfriend onboard – there’s no escape. She’s hoping the ship is big enough to avoid them but, unlucky for her, a booking mix-up means she’s sharing a two-bed suite with Todd, Nikki, and the handsome but infuriating Brody too.

With no choice but to ride out the awkwardness, Jessa and Brody hatch a plan. If they can’t win their exes back, they’ll get them back – revenge – by faking a red-hot romance of their own. That’ll show them. But the better they get at faking it – and the more undeniable their chemistry – the blurrier the line becomes. Either way, there’s going to be trouble at sea because true love is never plain sailing!

Have you read any of these?
What books are you most excited to read right now?

Any advice for how to pull yourself out of the sad place and get motivated to do good things?

Welcome to another TTT! Thanks so much for all of your well wishes last week when I was sick. I’m feeling much better now! This week’s topic was submitted by Joanne @ Portobello Book Blog and is: Book Titles Featuring Ordinal Numbers. Ordinal numbers are numbers that define an item’s place in a series. For example: first, second, third, fourth, tenth, fourteenth, thirty-third, one hundredth, etc. I’m picking a mix of books I’ve read (I put asterisks by those) and books from my TBR, and I’m going in numerical order!

So today I’m going to share quotes that are beautiful descriptions of something, be it feelings, scenery, etc. This is going to be tricky!

“The sun kept dipping down into the ocean and the lights came on at the harbor, casting sudden shadows on the ground, illuminating the faces that were just a second ago silhouettes. The sky was golden and purple, the ocean a darker shade of violet.”

“Winding our way through the narrow path, we finally pulled to a blessed stop outside the castle. Fingers of moonlight reached over the spires and slid down the roof, casting our shadows in sinister shapes. This castle was eerie and I haven’t even stepped inside.”

― Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco

“Loving Alex is innate language. I don’t remember how I learned it because by the time it dawned on me to consider the concept, I was already fluent. I didn’t stop loving him, I didn’t forget that I loved him, either. All I did was put the words behind a door to prevent them from escaping into conscious thought. They’ve been waiting there all this time, alive, just as loud, just as strong, as they ever were.”

― Old Flames and New Fortunes by Sarah Hogle

“She had memories of a quiet pool in the woods, where she’d retreat with her books, hiding from chores that needed to be done around the house. She remembered the sound of her parents after sunset, calling her to come home. The fireflies would flicker around her as it became too dark to read, but still she’d stay, to watch the fireflies over the water and listen to the birds and the squirrels settle in for the night and the night hunters, the owls and and the cats, begin to wake. Once, she’d even glimpsed a unicorn sipping from the pond, but it could have been only a white deer and a trick of the twilight. Another afternoon, her father had come with her, avoiding his chores too. They’d read books side by side, and her mother hadn’t said a word when they’d returned. A week later, her mother had been the one to join her by the pond, arriving with lunch in a basket and presenting Kiela with a new unread book, a rare treasure on the island.”

― The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst

“It sounds like a floorboard, emitting the faintest of creaks. I sit up and scan the room, looking for—well, I don’t know what to expect. An intruder? A burglar? The mansion beginning its inevitable slide into the Atlantic? But there’s nothing to see.”

― The Only One Left by Riley Sager

“I want to be commanding, stern, intimidating, but I am raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. My resolve is dandelion fluff.”

― Twice Shy by Sarah Hogle

“…there is not a woman alive who has not learned how to eat rage in order to appear calm.”

― The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn

“The wind you hear is the same wind that has always blown. The rain that falls is the same rain. Over and over, round and round, like a giant circle. The wind and the waves have been present since time began. The rocks and stars too. But the rocks don’t speak, and the stars are too far away to tell us what they know.”

― What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon

“I smelled jasmine first—then saw stars. A sea of stars flickering beyond glowing pillars of moonstone that framed the sweeping view of endless snowcapped mountains. Welcome to the Night Court”.

― A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

“He was seated on the bench now. He had his left elbow on his knee, his right arm across his lap, his shoulders hunched, his head bowed. White face, red hair: snow and fire, like something from an old tale. The book I had noticed earlier was on the bench beside him, its covers shut. Around Anluan’s feet and in the birdbath, small visitors to the garden hopped and splashed and made the most of the day that was becoming fair and sunny. He did not seem to notice them. As for me, I found it difficult to take my eyes from him. There was an odd beauty in his isolation and his sadness, like that of a forlorn prince ensorcelled by a wicked enchantress, or a traveller lost forever in a world far from home.”

― Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier

AND a bonus, because I saw this while I was hunting for quotes and burst out laughing.

“A man is not entitled to be called a father merely because he once had a well-timed spasm of the loins.”

― Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas
