Pain Of The Knee

Cortisone knee injections (aka steroid injections) are common knee treatments prescribed by orthopedic knee doctors as a means of providing temporary knee pain relief. Unfortunately, most knee pain sufferers don’t really understand what cortisone does, its side-effects, and why it’s important to consider other knee treatment alternatives before getting cortisone knee injections.

Two Types of Cortisone:

1) The first form of cortisone is the one naturally produced by our adrenal glands and released into our bloodstream in times of stress. It is considered our ‘fight or flight’ hormone.

2) The second form of cortisone is man-made or synthetic. This is the form that is injected into the knee joint to temporarily reduce swelling and inflammation in the knee. For example, Kenalog and Celestone are all name brands of synthetic cortisone injections that are used by orthopedic doctors.

What Do Steroid Injections Actually Do?

Cortisone is a type of steroid. It is not a pain reliever it is simply an anti-inflammatory. It indirectly provides knee pain relief because it reduces the fluid around the knee joint thereby relieving the pressure on the tissues in the knee.

When Should You Get A Cortisone Injection?

If you’ve had a recent injury, for example from a fall, a car accident, or playing sports and you have acute or severe swelling or inflammation in the knee joint then you should consider getting a cortisone injection. More than likely you will notice immediate relief after the shot; however, the effects will be temporary so while you’re still experiencing relief you should be searching for a REAL SOLUTION to your problem.

Reasons to Avoid Cortisone Shots:

1) Steroid injections will not cure you. Results will be temporary, even if you experience a reduction in swelling, inflammation, and pain in the knee joint. After having an injection, you must be cautious, since it is not unusual to exacerbate an injury during this time. (The worst part is you won’t know if you’ve reinjured the knee until the effects of the cortisone wear off.)

2) Only three steroid injections are allowed on a yearly basis because long term and repeated use will cause bone loss, weakening of tendons, and cartilage loss in the knee joint.

3) Do not get a cortisone injection if you don’t have fluid or swelling around your knee. It won’t help you.

4) If you’re diabetic then your blood sugar will need to be monitored since it causes a spike in blood sugar levels.

5) Shots in the knee joint are painful (especially if the area isn’t numbed properly) and can cause infections.

6) Again getting a cortisone injection is not a long term solution to relieving chronic knee pain. It does nothing to heal and repair injured tissue that is causing the pain.

A Better Knee Treatment Alternative…

A safer more effective knee treatment alternative to knee injections is cold laser therapy. Cold laser therapy is a painless, non-invasive knee treatment option that allows physicians to treat the cause of the problem thereby eliminating knee pain and inflammation. Cold laser therapy doesn’t just temporarily ‘cover up’ the pain like pain medications or knee injections. Cold laser therapy works by stimulating the healing process on a cellular level so that injured and damaged tissue can heal and repair itself faster.

In the long run, cortisone injections destroy bone and cartilage as well as weaken the tendons and make them more vulnerable to tears. For example, if you have been diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’ the last thing you want is more cartilage or bone loss. Or if you have tendonitis and you’ve gotten multiple cortisone injections to help relieve the inflammation around the knee then its highly likely that the tendon could tear. Even a torn meniscus will have a difficult time healing on its own with prolonged cortisone use.

The problem with knee injections is that you’re trading short term relief for long term problems. It’s similar to taking prescription medications, you’re ‘helping’ relieve one condition but you’re creating another problem because of the side-effects from the drugs.

In Conclusion…

A cold laser therapy knee treatment program should certainly be an option considered by individuals suffering from chronic knee pain; especially since it is painless, safe, and more effective than cortisone. Cold laser therapy is certainly not a cure-all but it sure beats the ‘conventional’ alternatives that we KNOW aren’t long term solutions for treating chronic knee pain.

Are you thinking about having a knee surgery?

Your doctor may have mentioned that you will be needing a knee brace for after surgery. So what kind do you get?

1.) Introduction

Knee braces are used by people to help ensure that their knee is supported and to alleviate the pain that they are feeling. Knee braces are constructed using a variety of materials. They are designed in a way to either cover your knee cap or allow for an open patella. The kneecap is left open in most knee braces available in the market. Remember, you do not always need to cover your knee to help provide stability to it.

It is important to make sure that the knee brace you are wearing is well designed. In reality, a well designed knee support will make a huge difference in the life of a sufferer of injured knees. One of the many benefits that they offer is to help you avoid painful movements that could probably lead to aggravation of the injury you have sustained. This is really important if you think about it. Why push a hurt knee? Why threaten a healing injury?

Right after a surgery you may be wearing a large knee brace that keeps your knee locked out in extension. This can be helpful because everything is very delicate after a surgery and your doctor will not want anything to disturb the procedures results.

3.) As Time Passes After a Surgery

This time period is still considered to be after surgery is done, but you will most likely heal as the days and weeks go by. A knee brace for after surgery now can be seen with different eyes. These braces can still provide you with maximum support, but often times you are allowed to move your knee around more and thus your physician will request that you are allowed more free range of motion to get the blood going.

4.) Your Brace Specialist

When it comes down to it, you may need a couple different knee braces depending on how long after the surgery you are. You will need to talk to your brace specialist with any questions and they can help guide you toward the best options. Do not just go to someone on the internet that does not know what they are talking about. Of course everyone claims to be experts, but you should be able to ask them questions and get some qualified answers when it comes to purchaing one of these supports.

* This is health information. We are brace specialists who have seen the benefits of bracing over the years, but we have to suggest that you speak to your doctor regarding medical advice.

If you have recently suffered an injury to your ACL knee or have gone through surgery such as meniscus surgery, it is important to start with “light” knee exercises before building to higher resistance training.

We will focus on minor leg lifts for this knee treatment exercise in order to help strengthen the largest muscle supporting the knee joint, which is the quadriceps.

Before doing these knee exercises, remember to warm up first by doing about 5 minutes of light walking.

First, you will need to find a place to sit comfortably that has back support, such as a on the floor against your wall.

Then, with your legs straight out in front of you, put a pillow under your right knee.

All you have to do is slowly raise your right foot off the ground by straightening your leg. You should feel the back of your knee putting pressure on the pillow below it (do not lock your knee).

Hold this position for about 10 seconds and slowly let your leg fold back over the pillow.

Do this exercise until you feel a good burn in your quadricep, which is that muscle on the front of your leg just above your knee joint.

Repeat this same exercise with your left leg.

Do these knee exercises at least twice a day until you can comfortably do it for 3 minutes at a time for each leg, then you know that it is time to move on to the next resistance level. All you have to do differently at this point is sit in a chair and raise one leg at a time.

Cold laser therapy may seem like a treatment that one would read about in a science fiction novel. Just in the past decade, however, it has become a recognized and often times preferred treatment for osteoarthritis knee pain sufferers who want to avoid invasive procedures.

Cold lasers are handheld, non-surgical devices that are used in a clinical setting. They work by emitting specific wavelengths of light thereby stimulating activity in the tissue on a cellular level. Once the metabolic rate of the cell is increased it initiates a number of beneficial biochemical events. The most obvious benefit is a reduction in both pain and inflammation. For example, a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study reported in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery found that laser therapy significantly relieved osteoarthritis knee pain and swelling in patients. The study also found that range of motion increased in the knee joint, and there was less sensitivity and tenderness around the knee joint.

Recently, an abstract entitled Low-Level Laser Therapy and Its Effects On The Quality of Life for Patients Suffering From Osteoarthritis Knee Pain in the Medial Compartment: A Detailed Analysis By Questionnaire found that 79.8% of patients diagnosed with moderate to severe arthritis in the medial aspect of the knee joint (inside part- where the knees touch) who were treated with cold laser therapy reported feeling moderately to a great deal better and their quality of life improved after completing just five weeks of care.

Besides helping reduce pain and inflammation in and around the knee joint, research indicates that cold laser therapy may help an arthritic knee by doing the following:

Fibroblasts production increases: Fibroblasts are needed to make cartilage.

Interleukin-1 is suppressed: Interleukin-1 is a protein that when released plays a direct role in destroying cartilage, it promotes the release of more enzymes that cause cartilage destruction, and it inhibits type II collagen from being produced (so that cartilage cannot be rebuilt or replaced). There are high levels of this protein in an osteoarthritic knee so cold laser therapy inhibits the release of this protein allowing cartilage to be maintained.

Growth factors are released: Treatments release growth factors which play a vital role in healthy knees because they stimulate cartilage cell production or chondrocytes. Moreover, the release of growth factors inhibits the release of interleukin-1.

Tensile strength of the tissue improves: Cold laser treatment is believed to improve the inter and intra molecular hydrogen bonding of the tissue thereby improving the strength of the cartilage so that it doesn’t wear down or get injured as easily.

In conclusion, for individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis knee pain, and need relief from their knee pain, but would prefer a non-invasive procedure should consider finding a doctor who specializes in cold laser therapy for knee pain.

Making the right decision concerning knee surgery is very crucial. You may be hesitant or scared to opt for this solution but one needs to understand that your doctor will only consider it if there is no other way out or medication is of no aid. However you need to make an informed decision and it is advisable to take suggestions from other medical experts and study the pros and cons before opting for it.

Here are top three reasons to for saying a yes to the knee surgery -

One needs to know the rationale behind knee surgery which is often not essential after a knee injury. Knee surgery is performed to prevent the bones from rubbing against each other as this causes pain. Replacing a painful knee joint with an artificial joint provides a new surface, which moves easily and devoid of pain. The main objective is to assist people to lead their life normally and actively. With proper care and rest, individuals who have had surgery can expect several years of good function of the replaced knee. However in most cases knee injuries can be treated with proper medications and a knee operation is not essential.

Looking at the past records, one will be pleased to know that the success rate of the knee surgery has been more than 90 percent. Many people have opted for it and got satisfactory results. Knee surgery changes your life and makes it pain free, thus allowing you to do your daily chores with much ease and comfort. Post operation, you will no longer have to stop yourself from going out and doing things that you had deprived yourself from due to the knee pain.

Longevity of the replaced knee joint is one of the reasons that give you confidence going for knee surgery. The surgery is a process where disease prone, worn and damaged surfaces of a knee joint are removed and changed with an artificial knee joint. The materials used in the replaced knee joint are durable and produce minimum friction thus facilitating smooth leg movement. With the advancement in technology and medical science, there are new kinds of knee replacement parts that are very flexible, thus permitting the knee to bend or curve up to 155 degrees. On the whole, the artificial knee components are crafted to fit perfectly and precisely and hence augment the function of the replaced knee coming as closely as possible to an original joint.

The most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA), affects more than 20 million Americans. One of the primary targets for this disease is the knee.

OA affects articular cartilage, the gristle that caps the ends of long bones. Articular cartilage is a “pudding” that is made up of a matrix of proteoglycans (arrangements of proteins and glycogen molecules.) In addition, there is a framework of tough collagen fibers. Within this proteoglycan/collagen structure are cells called chondrocytes.

The maintenance of normal cartilage integrity is highly dependent on the metabolic function of these chondrocytes.

Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear disease of articular cartilage. It arises as a result of the lack of ability of cartilage to keep up with excessive breakdown.

The first step that occurs in the process of OA is an alteration in the matrix. This causes loss of cartilage resiliency. In addition, proteins that promote inflammation (called inflammatory cytokines) are produced by the joint lining. These cytokines activate destructive enzymes, called proteases which degrade the matrix and cause the chondrocytes to malfunction.

So far, the treatment of osteoarthritis is mostly symptomatic. Various medicines, called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), analgesics (pain-killers), exercises, physical therapy, and injections are used to provide palliative relief. Ultimately, though, patients will go on to have knee replacement surgery.

While this operation has generally been reserved for elderly patients, joint replacement surgery is increasing at an alarming rate among Baby Boomers who want to maintain a certain level of activity.

According to a recent report (Associated Press, Lindsay Tanner), “nearly one in twenty Americans older than 50 has an artificial knee- that’s four million people!”

The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has issued a recent report showing that knee replacements tripled in people ages 45 to 64 between 1997 and 2009. While it’s admirable and speaks to the increased activity level in a group of patients that formerly would be sitting in rocking chairs, in another sense, it raises other issues.

This is particularly disturbing because revision surgery (replacement of the replacement) will be needed in the future and this is a much more difficult and costly endeavor. Revision surgery takes longer, requires more expertise, is more complicated, and has a greater likelihood of complications.

Obviously, there is a public health problem if people with knee OA are going on to get an operation that will add tremendous costs to an already overburdened healthcare system. More in a future article.

Pain Patella

Patella Femoral Syndrome or “runner’s knee” is a common condition that involves inflammation of the patellar tendon in the knee. It can cause pain, clicking, grinding noises in the knee and overall discomfort. Misalignment of the knee joint contributes to the inflammation of the patellar tendon. Repetitive motion such as running, jumping or even riding a stationary bike can cause this condition. Other factors that contribute to the misalignment of the knee joint are weakness in the muscles surrounding it. The cartilage also deteriorates under the patella (knee cap). When the cartilage begins to “wear and tear” more pressure placed onto the knee joint which results in the knee cap going out of alignment. When that happens the knee cap ceases to glide properly over the femur (thigh bone). Normally the knee cap moves along a groove on the femur. When the knee cap isn’t properly aligned in the groove, you experience pain under the knee cap.

I was diagnosed with patella femoral syndrome in my knees years ago. I often experienced the humiliating sound of grinding and clicking in my knees as I walked up and down stairs. I sounded like a robot. Others have experienced cracking or popping sounds when squatting, standing up, or going up and down stairs. My doctor prescribed a series of leg exercises to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee joint to help ease my symptoms. While the exercises did offer relief after a period of time, once I stopped doing them, the symptoms returned. I was looking for something that would offer long-term relief and didn’t have debilitating side-effects.

I came upon an all-natural supplement containing glucosamine and a proprietary blend of all-natural substances which took away the grinding and pain in my knees in a matter of weeks. I would still encourage you to exercise your knees if you’re already doing so to strengthen the surrounding muscles, but for added benefit to promote healing of your knee joints and to treat the deteriorating cartilage and inflammation, I recommending taking an all-natural supplement containing glucosamine sulfate.

Glucosamine is an amino sugar found in the body that is necessary for the construction of connective tissue and healthy cartilage. It is the critical building block that forms these tissues. This contributes to the formation of large protein molecules that act like a sponge to hold water giving connective tissues elasticity and cushioning effects. This also provides a protective sheath to help protect against excessive wear and tear of the joints. Without glucosamine, our tendons, ligaments, and other body tissues will not form properly. Normally our bodies produce sufficient levels of glucosamine to form the various compounds needed to build connective tissue and healthy cartilage. As we age, or with increased activity, our bodies may not be able to keep up with the demand.

For optimum health benefits, I recommend pharmaceutical grade glucosamine. Pharmaceutical grade means 99% pure without any additives or unnecessary substances which could cause unwanted side-effects. Pharmaceutical grade products can cost a little more, but the difference is small and worth every penny. Here’s the bottom line: A cheap supplement will not be properly absorbed into your body. A slightly more expensive pharmaceutical grade supplement is metabolized and absorbed well.

If you’re suffering from back pain, there are different types of back pain exercise that you can do to help relieve the pain. Different exercise techniques will not only help the pain that you are already feeling, but can actually prevent future pain problems as well. You can do running, weight training, and even stretching exercises to help take away the pain. A lot of the exercises can be done in your own home and local track so you don’t have to spend a lot of money getting a membership or looking for licensed professionals.

Learning about back pain and in particular, your specific type of pain can help you decide on the right programs for you. Back pain exercise offers a variety of benefits, including short term pain relief as well as long term comfort, but you need to make sure you are doing the right exercises for your particular condition.

It might be wise to get an analysis of the pain you are experiencing by visiting a physical therapist or family doctor. This doesn’t need to be an ongoing process, but an original diagnosis will help you determine how severe your pain is, and what kind of treatment you need. Sometime back pain exercise could be more harmful than beneficial if your case is severe enough. If that’s the case, you might need more intense physical therapy or even have to rely on medication. Only a license doctor should be able to come up with the diagnosis for you.

Once you’ve determined the severity of your pain issues, you can try different pack pain exercise. The exercises focus on strength training, conditioning, and stretching. These will help improve the quality of your muscles, make your body more healthy, and help prevent back injuries in the future. If you’re not in the best shape, other muscles may not provide the necessary support, and your back has to step in and take the brunt of the support, which can lead to pain and damage.
When your back has to take all of the strain from your body, this can lead to injuries such as slipped discs, pulled muscles, and various other back ailments. Getting proper exercise will ensure that your back is supported and can provide some immediate relief from pain. Your healthy muscles will also prevent back issues in the future, and the more you exercise the better off you will be.

Back pain exercise is a very effective, non expensive way to get yourself into optimal health. Among all of the other possible benefits, back pain relief is your primary concern and you can begin seeing results immediately.

Every year, thousands of people are faced with the decision to have knee replacement surgery to eliminate the pain they suffer from osteoarthritis, advanced rheumatoid arthritis or trauma. The discomfort suffered from these ailments, not only cause extreme pain, but can also cause loss of motion and deformities in the effected knee.

The decision to have knee replacement surgery is only reached after all other forms of treatment have been exhausted. Many people, who have tried other non-invasive forms of treatment, find that surgery is their only options to relieve their pain and resume normal activities.

Knee replacement surgery replaces the surfaces of the knee joint that bears the body’s weight, causing pain and disability. An orthopedic surgeon can perform the surgery as a partial or total replacement, according to the degree of damage done by the diseased or traumatized area of the knee.

The most important step to take during this process is to find a competent orthopedic surgeon. This can be a daunting task, because the person receiving the surgery will want to make sure they are getting someone who will give them the best care possible. If the patient has been seeing a family doctor, they can refer them to a trusted colleagues specializing in orthopedic medicine.

Once the referral is obtained, the patient should make an appointment to get acquainted with the orthopedic surgeon. It is beneficial for the patient to have a list of questions prepared to ask the surgeon. This will help the patient and doctor have a better understanding of any concerns the patient may have.

The amount of time required for the patient to spend in the hospital is according to the type of knee surgery that is preformed. There are two very different forms of surgery that can be preformed; arthroscopic or open orthopaedic surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is less invasive and requires less rehabilitation time than the more traditional orthopaedic surgery. Arthroscopic surgery is usually preformed on an outpatient basis, allowing for the patient to go home the same day of the surgery. Orthepaedic surgery usually requires the patient to stay in the hospital for 1 to 7 days. They type of surgery required depends on the difficulty of the repair and the overall health of the patient. Therefore, which type of surgery to perform is ultimately up to the orthopedic surgeon.

Even though non-surgical methods can help eliminate knee pain, there are many benefits to knee surgery when preformed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon. Many recipients of knee surgery find they are able to do things they have not been able to do for years.

Pain Exercise

Back pain exercise is one of the most successful treatments for back pain relief. By doing exercise, you can take care of the pain that you are currently experiencing, but you can also eliminate future risks for back pain by making your muscles stronger and making your body more fit. While some exercises aren’t good to do when you have back pain issues, there are a great variety of stretching and strength training exercises that can actually help the situation and take away your pain. You don’t have to look far to find programs and medical professionals who can offer you the exercise that you need.

Pain in the back needs to be understood before you can completely understand the exercise that you will be instructed to do. The back is very complex, and the body depends on the spinal column and the back muscles to take care of stabilizing and supporting the body at all times. However, with certain activities, prolonged positions, and various injuries or events, the back can become compromised and you can be put into a lot of pain. This is caused by various instances and comes in many different varieties. In order to be able to find the best treatment, you need to understand both what caused your pain and what type of pain you are having.

Upper and lower back pain happen for different reasons. They are two main types of pain, and within them are several other specific causes, such as muscle pain, slipped discs, compression pain, nerve damage that causes pain and even neck pain that can radiate into the back and pain that can radiate into the chest. Once you have narrowed down the type of pain that you have, you can then go forward in figuring out where it came from. If you are aware of a deliberate action or strenuous activity that you were involved in that caused the pain, it will be much easier to handle the pain since you know what caused it. However, if it just comes on unknowingly, you might not be able to pinpoint the cause without medical tests or exams. Make sure that you seek medical attention when you need it, because you need to keep your back in great shape.

Learning about back pain and the different kinds that there are will put you in a better position to find back pain exercise programs that are effective in relieving your back pain. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking to get instant relief or if you want a proven treatment that will provide long lasting relief from back pain that you have, because there is something out there for everyone. The exercises that you do will vary depending on your particular pain and what caused it, but you can find chiropractors, physical therapists, and even family doctors that can help you find the right exercise routine to relieve your back pain issues for good.

Back pain exercise focuses on strength training and stretching, both of which will improve the quality of your muscles and make your body healthier. When your leg muscles, stomach muscles, or gluteus muscles are not strong enough, your back can become the victim by having to take on all the strain, which can cause muscles to pull, discs to slip, and other things to occur that cause all kinds of back pain. By doing the right exercise, you can not only eliminate this pain, but you can also continue to see relief into the future because your body is healthier and you are more physically fit.

There is something for everyone when it comes to exercises that are designed to help the pain. There is no limit to the relief that you can find, and there are so many sources where you can learn about exercise, including everything from basic workouts to Thai Chi and even low-impact cardio that can help you strengthen your muscles and become a healthier person. Just take the time to check out all of your options and learn everything that you can about back pain relief so that you get the right solution for your situation every single time.
