Every fortnight we'll be getting together to discuss the news, what's good on the web (or in print) and discuss what we've been driving. Things can get a little fraught on the podisodes, so if you're not a fan of the occasional f-bomb (and they are occasional compared to the early days which you can find and download from www.alex-goy.com) and strong opinions (Alex doesn't really 'do' subtle) then we'll understand if you send us hate mail. Occasionally we have guests on. They're either fellow motoring journalists, general car nuts or well known (ish) people. There is a reason for this – we’re all super mega hyper busy. We didn’t want to ditch the Podisode, but it wasn’t sustainable at the rate it was going. Please understand that we didn’t tak the decision to do this lightly, either. It was a bugger to make and a horrible thing to admit to, but we’re human and simply couldn’t be in more than eight places at once (as one of us had to be at one point – messy). We’ve been humbled by the requests for more content and for more Podisodes and hopefully we’ll be back up to snuff at some point soon. Watch this space, as it were. \n<p> Anyway, overly large intro out of the way &ndash; time for a brief run down of what we talked about. <br /> <br /> BMW&rsquo;s new M Performance diesel range fell under our purple sights. It&rsquo;s an interesting concept and a departure for the M Division. Mostly because it uses the &lsquo;demon&rsquo; fuel. And by &lsquo;demon fuel&rsquo; we mean diesel, which is fine by us because it lasts a while longer than petrol. Like a well practiced porn star. <br /> <br /> SEAT is set to launch a new Ibiza. Well, we say new, we mean facelifted. Thankfully it&rsquo;s a good nose job and the whole thing looks rather stunning in all. It&rsquo;ll get tweaked inside too, so the whole thing looks fresh and current owners won&rsquo;t be too pissed that their car is suddenly out of date. It&rsquo;s a touch more aggressive than the current car. A good thing. <br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s not just SEAT undergoing the makeover treatment &ndash; Porsche has launched an all-new Boxster. It&rsquo;s quite a looker and seems to have a fair bit in common with the Carrera GT supercar. The range topper will have a 3.4-lite mill under the bonnet and should hit 62mph in 5.0 seconds dead. We like. <br /> <br /> We touch briefly on the What Car? Awards ceremony. Jon and Alex were there and both saw the deserving VW Up take the &lsquo;best car&rsquo; gong. There was oddly nary a sniff of the Range Rover Evoque, which was very odd. However, the most bizarre thing to happen all night was the MG6 winning an award. Apparently it&rsquo;s the most secure car on the market. Is it because no one&rsquo;ll steal one? Or is it genuinely full of security toys? All we know is the sound of a 1,000 people being confused at once while an exec wonders up to a stage is REALLY uncomfortable. <br /> <br /> It seems that there&rsquo;s a new Honda NSX in town. It looks rather pretty, too. It&rsquo;ll have a hybrid set up like the CR-Z. Let&rsquo;s hope it&rsquo;s not as disappointing. <br /> <br /> Still, it won&rsquo;t be as disappointing as Will.I.Am&rsquo;s car company IAMAUTO. The Black Eye Pea is launching his own car firm to make another stamp on the world. Let&rsquo;s see &ndash; his band is very successful (even with an incontinent singerette) but can he turn his hand to auto making? Will IAMAUTO one day jostle Ford off the top spot. No. No it won&rsquo;t. It&rsquo;ll be gash. <br /> <br /> Finally&hellip; MG has launched a BTCC team with TV&rsquo;s Jason Plato at the helm. It&rsquo;ll boost MG awareness, that&rsquo;s for sure. But will it win? Like IAMAUTO, probably not. <br /> <br /> <strong>Wot we haz droven</strong><br /> <br /> This month we&rsquo;ve driven a mix of things. Alex drove the new Audi A1 Sportback, a Renault Clio 200 Cup (<a href="http://www.podisode.com/podisode/renault-clio-200-cup">Podisode here</a>) and a BMW X3, JQ got his mitts on the new Porsche 911, a new Volvo XC90 and a bobsled and Phil drove the new Ford Focus Estate. <br /> <strong><br /> Stuff on the web that isn&rsquo;t crap</strong><br /> <br /> Phil likes <a href="http://www.sucksqueezebangblow.net/folder/2012/01/20/lotus-v-last-orders-2/">this wonderful piece by S2B2</a>. But you have to admit that you need a boot, rear seats and room for (whisper it) a child seat. <br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s a crazy car with a hint of compromise, it&rsquo;s dad&rsquo;s (or mum&rsquo;s) daily driver AND fun thing to play in on the weekends. <br /> <br /> So, the basics (so you can listen to the Pod and hear what we think) &ndash; it&rsquo;s &pound;16k (ish), has naff all by way of toys and you&rsquo;ll give yourself a dead leg on the seats every time you get in (if you go for the optional Recaro seats). Oh, and the ride is stiff as hell &ndash; but that&rsquo;s what the Cup is all about. <br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s hard, fast and bloody good fun. Though it did nearly make Phil hurl. <br /> <br /> Perhaps, if you&rsquo;re a single man you might do best to keep the Clio in the hole &ndash; proclaiming to a date that it&rsquo;s capable of going round a corner a touch faster than a normal Clio 200. It’s much, much more than that.\n<p> The bad bits &ndash; the b-pillar is very, very far back. So far back that little people like me have to do a full body twist to reach the seat belt.&nbsp;</p> <p> The diesel engines aren&rsquo;t really suited to its handling. But they are rather &lsquo;eco-tastic&rsquo;, which is good in some circles.&nbsp;</p> <p> It has an electric handbrake. These things are worse than shaking Satan&rsquo;s hand. A lever will do and, when its engaged, you KNOW it&rsquo;s on. With the &lsquo;leccy option engaged it&rsquo;s not so assured.&nbsp;</p> <p> The good bits &ndash; It actually rides well on 19-inch wheels. Really, it does.&nbsp;</p> <p> Looks wise, the GTC is pretty much winning. It looks stunning, as though it came from an Italian design house. Ish. It&rsquo;s certainly prettier than the Renault Megan&eacute; Coup&eacute;.&nbsp;</p> <p> Thanks to the Inisgnia VXR&rsquo;s trick suspension it handles rather well. Certainly better than the majority of its rivals.&nbsp;</p> <p> The long and the short of it, folks, is that the Vauxhall Astra GTC is far, far better than expected. Well, we say new. It’s sort of new and sort of not. It’s a little... confusing. \n<p> A couple of years ago MINI released a set of images picturing two cars. The MINI Coup&eacute; and the MINI Cabriolet. Both were small(ish) had two seats and were set to become reality.&nbsp;</p> <p> The reaction to them was not good. Well, the Cabriolet went down well because it didn&rsquo;t look as odd as the Coup&eacute;.&nbsp;</p> <p> You see the Coup&eacute; showed what both cars essentially are &ndash; MINI hatches with a new roof on and a long boot in place of rear seats. The Coup&eacute; looked stunted and, well, weird. There was outcry from the MINIists on the interwebs. They called for blood, forgetting that no matter what they said MINI would pretty much ignore them and go on to sell thousands.&nbsp;</p> <p> Now it&rsquo;s 2011 and the MINI Coup&eacute; has been launched. I was there, I know.&nbsp;</p> <p> Those of you who lament its looks, don&rsquo;t &ndash; it&rsquo;s nowhere near ugly when you see it in the metal. However, because it&rsquo;s essentially a chopped MINI hatch it is a little cramped in there. Taller drivers, such as my co-driver for the launch James Baggott, will have a fair few issues. The seats hadn&rsquo;t been lowered to compensate for the lower roof and swept back &lsquo;screen (by 13 degrees for added sportiness, apparently), so James had awful trouble looking out of the window and keeping his clutch leg comfy. I was ok to sit in there, I&rsquo;m the height of a well developed child, but I did have issues seeing traffic lights and with the A-Pillar ruining my view of the particularly vicious Austrian country bends.&nbsp;</p> <p> As I mentioned before, there are no rear seats. There&rsquo;s a shelf for bags and a hatch through to the boot (which is really handy, by the by) so your passenger can grab things while you&rsquo;re on the move. The boot itself is massive, bigger than the MINI Clubman, the range&rsquo;s load-lugger.&nbsp;</p> <p> So if you&rsquo;re tall it&rsquo;ll do your leg in but there&rsquo;s lots of space in the back &ndash; so far, so good. For average sized people prone to over packing, at least.&nbsp;</p> <p> Under the bonnet you&rsquo;ll find the usual line up of MINI engines, bar the One. This is because the Coup&eacute; is a &lsquo;halo product&rsquo; (PING), and needs to be sporty. So no slow-pokes allowed.&nbsp;</p> <p> All in all its rather good &ndash; a great product that will be a bit of a treat to see on the road. But I can&rsquo;t help to think that its creation is a little cheap. It&rsquo;s not a &lsquo;new&rsquo; car, is a rebodied hatchback. Why couldn&rsquo;t it have been rear-wheel drive with more room and lowered seats? That I can tell you &ndash; it would have been mammothly expensive to engineer a whole new car. So when James Baggott from Car Dealer Magazine rang and asked whether I’d fancy going to Wales to join his Road Test of the Year I left a little cartoon-style cloud outline as I sped out of the door. \n<p> Before the words begin proper &ndash; no I wasn&rsquo;t allowed to drive it. I was merely riding shotgun in one of the most exciting new cars of this fresh decade. And you know what? I honestly don&rsquo;t care. I did get a spin in many of the other Road Test of the Year cars, but that&rsquo;s coming in a later pod. The Ferrari 458 is special, so gets its own. <br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s big. It&rsquo;s red. It&rsquo;s got one of Daniel Radcliffe&rsquo;s favourite animals dancing on its body And, as you&rsquo;ll find out, it sounds absolutely incredible. <br /> <br /> I&rsquo;ve only ever experienced Ferraris from the outside before. At motor shows, on the street and at the odd meet at the Ace Caf&eacute;. And, in my many years of loving cars, I can safely say that the 458 is first one I&rsquo;ve truly wanted. Not in a &ldquo;when I win the lottery I&rsquo;ll have one&rdquo; kinda way, in a &ldquo;At some point in my life, if I&rsquo;ve not owned one of these I&rsquo;ll have failed&rdquo; kinda way. <br /> <br /> Everything about the 458 is drama. The seats are big and chunky, flecked with red stitching and embossed with the Ferrari logo. The centre console is covered with carbon fibre and a &ldquo;458 Italia&rdquo; badge, in case you or your passenger forgets what car currently surrounds you. And that&rsquo;s what it does &ndash; it surrounds you. Not in a cramped, Caterham way, but everything is within arm&rsquo;s reach and comfortably snug. Everything there is to touch feels as though it&rsquo;s made from the best &ndash; and with the price tag (can&rsquo;t ignore that...) of around &pound;200k on the test car you&rsquo;d hope so. But it&rsquo;s clear your money is going into something truly special. <br /> <br /> Speed and handling is the 458&rsquo;s party piece. Well, aside from looks that cause children, adults and the elderly to stop and drop their jaws, that is. The acceleration is predictably effortless, though the ferocity of &lsquo;Race&rsquo; mode is enough to shock you. It clings to the road as a cheap horror movie &lsquo;victim&rsquo; would the floor as they&rsquo;re dragged to their certain, gory doom. My face was cheekily manipulated by G forces as we drove through the Welsh countryside. <br /> <br /> I&rsquo;m assured (and may have witnessed) that it can be coaxed, rather easily, into some fairly dramatic oversteer, too. That may be because of the double portion of torque Ferrari&rsquo;s engineers decided to feed it. It&rsquo;ll spin the rear wheels in third gear. Third. Gear. So it&rsquo;s a bit quick... <br /> <br /> The crux of this wee preamble (or accompaniment to the Podisode) is this: The 458 is something special. Really, really special. It leaves something with you. Not in an arty, wanky way. You see, this year marks 100 years of Ford in the UK. That makes it out of living memory (aside from the odd person who has an eidetic memory and lived through the first Model T rolling off the line at Trafford Park in Manchester). Our part in the day may have been minor, but we felt truly special. \n<p> When you think about it, 100 years is a long, long time. Hell, ten years is a fair whack. A decade ago broadband was very expensive (and slow), internet pornography was hard to come by (pun unintended but awesome) and the humble iPhone, the hipster&rsquo;s best friend, was yet to be born. Fifty years ago computers weren&rsquo;t something for the home and the Jaguar E-Type was launched at the Geneva Motor Show to massive praise. Now, a century ago (in October, admittedly) the first Ford Model T rolled off the line in the UK. That car was the first of its kind over here. It was mass produced, affordable and worked with minimum &ndash; for the time- fuss. It was very much a good thing.&nbsp;</p> <p> Without wanting to sound like I&rsquo;m having a mind-wank over the thing, the Model T was a sort of genesis for everything that came afterwards. Yes, the controls changed (thank God) and the application of the humble roof became standard, but still &ndash; it set the scene for what was to come.&nbsp;</p> <p> Early starts are no fun. None at all. So being told that I&rsquo;m to be at Battersea Park for 5am for &lsquo;something special&rsquo; was met with a raised eyebrow, a mild grunt and a silent acknowledgement that we were going to be up to something awesome whether I&rsquo;d had a morning cuppa or not.&nbsp;</p> <p> 4am rolled by. My alarm went off. Radio One, as usual, blared out. And, as usual, I slept through it. 4.30 came and I woke up quickly &ndash; two unrepeatable words (both the same) were uttered and I rushed out of the flat.&nbsp;</p> <p> It&rsquo;s not often I swear all the way through a journey, but I knew I didn&rsquo;t want to be late. And, despite living just over a mile away from the park, I didn&rsquo;t actually know where I was supposed to be going. Several entrances + fried brain = mess. Still, after a few hurried calls I made it and was met by a grinning JQ.&nbsp;</p> <p> We jogged (no running, ta, I&rsquo;m working on my belly) and Jon grinned like a loon. Why? &ldquo;Mate, we&rsquo;re driving the Mexico&rdquo;. The fabled Escort Mexico, the Mk 1 Escort that everyone and their dog knows about and covets. Mexicos are big business &ndash; body shells with VIN plates go for thousands, immaculate ones cost a bomb (think &lsquo;shiny new car&rsquo;) and there are many replicas on the market, too. It&rsquo;s a petrolhead&rsquo;s wet dream. And we were going to play in it.&nbsp;</p> <p> We hopped in, were given a radio (which you&rsquo;ll hear in the Pod) and were told to stay with the convoy, not get lost and hope that everything goes OK.&nbsp;</p> <p> We were ecstatic. Who wouldn&rsquo;t be? We were in one of the most iconic Fords ever made, bumbling round London at Sparrow&rsquo;s Fart with no traffic alongside nine other awesome Fords. We were in the midst of a Model T, Model Y, Anglia, V8 Pilot, Focus RS, Ka, Transit Connect, Sierra and a Consul. Not bad for an early start.&nbsp;</p> <p> Mouths fell open as our convoy went by. Men of a certain age nodded at Jon and I. It was that kind of event. After a quick stop (to wait for other cars to catch up) Jon and switched seats &ndash; t&rsquo;was my turn to play. The Mexico drives as you&rsquo;d expect &ndash; like a car. We did have to treat it with a little more respect than you would with a &lsquo;new&rsquo; model; it was built in 1973 and had covered a sniff over 30,000 miles. Also &ndash; the brakes are shit. Well, compared to what we&rsquo;re used to now.&nbsp;</p> <p> Everything was going just fine until a set of lights in The City. First wouldn&rsquo;t engage. Neither would second. I panicked. Had I broken the dream? It seemed so. We waited, struggled and got it moving again. Not after one of the squeakiest of bum moments I&rsquo;ve ever had.&nbsp;</p> <p> We pulled into Potter&rsquo;s Field triumphant. We&rsquo;d driven one of the coolest Fords ever to have been through town at the start of Ford&rsquo;s Centenary Tour. Chris Evans even rocked up. And guess what... he wants to buy a Mexico.&nbsp;</p> <p> Tough. I saw it first.&nbsp;</p> On August 17 Jon and I got up very, very early to take part in something special. You see, this year marks 100 years of Ford in the UK. That makes it out of living memory (aside from the odd person who has an eidetic memory and lived through the first Model T rolling off the line at Trafford Park in Manchester). The front end is different to most other things on the road &ndash; it&rsquo;s big, chunky and stands out, rather. At the back it looks rather handsome, though not overly revolutionary. Which is a shame, because the Cruze hatch should be taking on the brilliant but bland Vauxhall Astra &ndash; a design win would have swayed a fair few customers from the Griffin. But hey ho... <br /> <br /> We drove the 2.0-litre VCD-i in top-spec Executive trim. It&rsquo;s not that fast, not that great in the corners, the materials don&rsquo;t feel great and the optional sat nav got us confused. BUT &ndash; it&rsquo;s not meant for goons like us Pod lot. <br /> <br /> The Cruze hatch is for people who want a little bit of Americana at a price. The Cruze starts at &pound;14k and goes all the way up to &pound;20k (for our car...), so you can comfortably get one to suit most budgets. <br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s meant for people who are maybe a touch older, who want something comfortable to get around in. Not to get to the &lsquo;ring in. <br /> <br /> And for that reason I like it. It&rsquo;s &lsquo;a car&rsquo; and a good &lsquo;a car&rsquo; at that. So when the offer of a few days babysitting was laid down we jumped at the chance. \n<p> The Porsche Cayman is a polarising beastie. It was designed to sit neatly between the Boxster and the 911 in terms of both price and performance. It&rsquo;s the awkward middle child. But when your little sister is as famous as the Boxster and your older sibling has is as celebrated as the 911, it&rsquo;s ok to consider the relatively youthful Cayman as the black sheep.&nbsp;</p> <p> But it&rsquo;s the black sheep issue that makes us love it. It&rsquo;s got a rear end that some dislike, others (like us) find appealing. Some find that it could handle more power &ndash; but why does it need it? Is 0-62mph in less than five seconds seriously too long for you? If so, it might be time to have a reality check, no?&nbsp;</p> <p> Anyway, the Cayman R is a special, hardcore super-quick mega Cayman. It comes with 10bhp over the Cayman S. A big, black spoiler sits on the boot. The front is covered in splitters. The exhausts are massive. The wing mirrors are painted black. Ours had a big sticker along the side and the paddle-shift PDK gearbox. While paddles aren&#39;t everyone&#39;s cup of tea we can see a market for it.&nbsp;</p> <p> Inside there are big &lsquo;ol bucket seats with red seatbelts. The door handles were deemed too heavy for the R, so in their place sits red fabric releases. Hell, to save weight even the instrument pod cowl was removed. That&rsquo;s pedantic. And rather wonderful, actually.&nbsp;</p> <p> Our test car had pretty much all the toys you&rsquo;d expect from a &pound;60k+ car &nbsp;(ours had lots of options), though lacked air conditioning for weigh saving reasons. While fair enough, it did get a bit sticky in there.&nbsp;</p> <p> To make the R more special it&rsquo;s had 55 kilos cut from the R, which means 62mph comes and goes in 4.9seconds and it&rsquo;ll do 175mph. Can&rsquo;t say fairer than that really...&nbsp;</p> <p> To drive it&rsquo;s as you&rsquo;d expect. It&rsquo;s brilliant. Power delivery is instant, and in Sport + mode rather noisy, an added bonus to having your kidneys pushed into a bucket seat.&nbsp;</p> <p> Downsides? None really. Yes, it&rsquo;s expensive compared to the Cayman S &ndash; but if you&rsquo;re in the market for this type of car will you really care? It&rsquo;s mildly uncomfortable over rough roads, but it&rsquo;s a SPORTS CAR. So it&rsquo;s going to be.&nbsp;</p> <p> The Cayman R went down very well at Podisode HQ. Well, lots of fun as it turns out. \n<p> The SEAT Leon Cupra R is a firm Podisode favourite. It has been for quite some time, actually. Mostly because when we drove it in 2010 it was big, brash, loud and a little bit lovely. But, a year later we wanted to see whether the magic has remained or if our initial infatuation was a mere holiday romance.&nbsp;</p> <p> So... we had a yellow, powerful, FWD family hatch and two twenty-somethings (Jon was away being all &lsquo;work like&rsquo;) to test it.&nbsp;</p> <p> Let&rsquo;s start with its performance, shall we?</p> <p> Well, she&rsquo;s rockin&rsquo; 261bhp, which is enough to get to 155mph. There&rsquo;s no electronic limiter &ndash; that&rsquo;s it&rsquo;s natural speed limit. However, if you&rsquo;ve the stones to go that quickly you&rsquo;re a bigger man than us (and you shouldn&rsquo;t be doing so on public roads, remember).&nbsp;</p> <p> 62mph comes and goes in an apt 6.2seconds. If you&rsquo;re nailing it. Which you probably will be, because the noise it makes is addictive. It makes the kind of warbly, rumbly churn you used to make when you were a kid playing with toy cars on your Gran&rsquo;s carpet. It isn&rsquo;t an all-real noise though &ndash; there&rsquo;s come computer assistance a) so it sounds awesome all the time b) so you don&rsquo;t piss off the world as you drive in town. Fair enough.&nbsp;</p> <p> The argument that too much power through the front wheels almost stands here. With the trick &lsquo;leccy XDS differential on board, the Cupra R appears to take the strain and put all 261bhp on the road in decent order. It can, if you&rsquo;re going too quickly, understeer a touch though. But that&rsquo;s to be expected.&nbsp;</p> <p> It&rsquo;s oddly subtle (aside from the yellow paint job). There&rsquo;s a few hints to its sporting pretentions &ndash; massive wheels (very massive &ndash; easily kerbable, too), two chunky exhausts, some subtle badging and some giant air dams. Inside there are some very nice leather seats (black, stitched in white), a few badges and some very natty gloss black seat backs with the &lsquo;R&rsquo; badge on display.&nbsp;</p> <p> See... subtle.&nbsp;</p> <p> Anyway &ndash; it turns out the Cupra R has lost none of its charm. No, it&rsquo;s not the best mega-hatch out there. But it&rsquo;s a driver&rsquo;s car for a driver with children and things. The ride isn&rsquo;t harsh, it&rsquo;s fairly easy going &ndash; so you kids won&rsquo;t vomit on your seat backs and you shopping will stay in its bags.&nbsp;</p> <p> We still love it. Some may struggle to see why. When you look at it you see a massive, almost lumpen shape. In red (as &lsquo;our&rsquo; Yeti was) it looks like a Post Office van. Yes, it&rsquo;s cute, but in the same way that Sloth from The Goonies is adorable. Great, but perhaps at arm&rsquo;s length.</p> <p> Everything&rsquo;s very big, chunky and Tonka Toy-ish. That sort of thing appeals to people who consider themselves children at heart. Like me.</p> <p> Inside there&rsquo;s plenty of room. Then again, its brick-esque exterior should be a decent hint that you&rsquo;ll be getting plenty of space. All the buttons are designed for people with either fat fingers or more strength than they know what to do with. Don&rsquo;t want to poke a button all the way through the dash? Buy a Yeti...</p> <p> Rear occupants will be pleased, as they have plenty of space. Though that can be increased or decreased depending on how much luggage you have. If you&rsquo;re carrying five particularly large adults, slide them backwards and give them space. Tiny kids with lots of stuff? Pop them forward and fill the boot with buggies. And you&rsquo;ll need to do that because the boot isn&rsquo;t as big as you&rsquo;d hope it to be. No matter, the Yeti comes with roof bars for luggage affixation if you need more room.</p> <p> On the move it&rsquo;s good fun. It corners as well as you&rsquo;d expect a tall SUV to corner, well &ndash; slightly better actually. The suspension is smooth enough to soak up all but the deepest of pot holes. Its raised ride height means you can see pretty much everything around you &ndash; and into the odd Range Rover, well... at least make eye contact with the driver long enough to show them they bought the wrong car.</p> <p> The fact it&rsquo;s a bit brick-ish does mean there&rsquo;s a fair bit of wind noise on the motorway (as you&rsquo;ll hear in the Podisode). It&rsquo;s not frustrating, but it&rsquo;s a definite &lsquo;try before you buy&rsquo; thing.</p> <p> Before I sign off and tell you to listen to the Podisode, here&rsquo;s the best recommendation I can give: My 61 year old mother hates driving. She hates it so much she makes up reasons to enjoy the bus. Which, as any mortal knows, is not humanly possible. Busses are wank. She drove the Yeti for about a day and proudly proclaimed that she drove around town, down a narrow country lane in the rain and on the motorway. And that she felt like King of the road. That&rsquo;s impressive, because I never thought she&rsquo;d drive on the M11 ever again (no joke, she hates it) and the Yeti let her do that. Like a prosthetic leg gives wounded soldiers a second lease of life.</p> <p> So there you have it &ndash; the Skoda Yeti is a prosthetic for the fearful. a few people off. Why? Because they still have wet dreams over the brilliant DS from back in t&rsquo;day. It was beautiful, clever and is now very, very expensive. As a Citroen billboard add pointed out &ndash; there&rsquo;s no cruise control, air con, crumple zones (aside from your legs) or air bags in the old DS, where you get all of that in a new C3, which costs substantially less.</p> <p> If you see a &lsquo;DS&rsquo; badge on the boot of a new Citroen you can expect better trim, a more focussed design and a more performance-centric engine line up. And for some reason men with beards don&rsquo;t like that.</p> <p> However, housewives in Cambridgeshire did. As did over 10,000 other people. Because that&rsquo;s how many DS3s are currently bumbling along British roads. And that&rsquo;s quite a lot &ndash; considering it&rsquo;s a small, expensive car that doesn&rsquo;t have &lsquo;MINI&rsquo; on the bonnet.</p> <p> Still, for some the DS3 is too small or too impractical so Citroen is looking to win their favour with a DS4, numerically one up on the DS3, as it is in the range. Let&rsquo;s go with the obvious bits first. It looks like it&rsquo;s riding high because it is. It has five doors, even though it looks to have only three. It is based on the C4. It is quite expensive. I have no idea what it actually is.</p> <p> You see, at the press presentation we were shown a video featuring key players in the DS4&rsquo;s creation. The exterior designer himself said: &ldquo;It is neither a coup&eacute; or a hatch back.&rdquo; So... what is it?</p> <p> &nbsp;</p> <p> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rz1lg7InalA" width="560"></iframe><br /> &nbsp;</p> <p> Well, it&rsquo;s certainly quite pretty. Well, most of it is &ndash; many find the rear a little bland (though the silver &lsquo;exhaust&rsquo; detail does appeal). The front is rather exciting, the sides look pretty and the wheels are very well designed indeed. Though its high ride makes even 18-inch wheels look TINY. Which is a little odd, no?</p> <p> Inside it&rsquo;s all very well designed, though a quick look in a C4 (parked round the corner) showed that they share the same dashboard (one piece, hewn from very squidgy plastic). However, the DS4 has plenty of leather and nice touches like a hand rail embossed with the &lsquo;DS&rsquo; logo. Which was quite cool. Our test car came with a massaging front seat function, too. It was rather fine.</p> <p> We had two engines to choose from: a 2.0-litre 163hp diesel or the DS3R&rsquo;s 1.6-litre HTP 200bhp petrol lump. Guess which I preferred? While the diesel was very nice it didn&rsquo;t have the urgency I like in &lsquo;posh&rsquo; cars. That&rsquo;s not to say it isn&rsquo;t rapid, but it&rsquo;s not quite enough for people with ADHD. The diesel also had an impossibly high clutch bite point and very sharp brakes; something the petrol lacked.</p> <p> The petrol engines kept its characteristics from the <strong><a href="http://www.podisode.com/podisode/citroen-ds3-racing">DS3 Racing</a></strong>. While the DS4 is a bit heavier, 62mph still arrives in 8.5seconds. Which means the DS4R will have to be something special (and no matter what Quirk says, it IS coming. Soon.).</p> <p> A few things &ndash; the one-piece sculpted dash does look a little cheap, especially when you consider it&rsquo;s in a car with a large premium over the C4 it came from. No, the rear windows don&rsquo;t open. At all. Get over it. You&rsquo;ll rarely use them anyway and if you have a dog, don&rsquo;t leave it in the back. The DS4 is very dark inside. Lots of grey and black looks cool, but means that even on a sunny day the rear is shrouded in darkness. The mother of a goth would do well to ferry young Quentin around in one. He&rsquo;d enjoy it.</p> <p> All of that left me, still, wondering what it was. It&rsquo;s not a coup&eacute; as it has too many doors. It&rsquo;s not a hatch as it&rsquo;s too high. It&rsquo;s not a crossover because there&rsquo;s no sniff of a 4WD option.</p> <p> It&rsquo;s a car without a niche. He teamed up with Lewis Kingston of Parkers for an informal natter about them both. \n<p> 4x4 Alhambra<br /> <br /> An interesting beast really &ndash; as mentioned in the blog, 4x4 MPVs haven&rsquo;t done well in the UK. So SEAT isn&rsquo;t planning on selling it in the UK. Still, we drove it and now might be the time to strike. It&rsquo;s very capable for minor off road things (gravel, light snow, etc) and usually sits in FWD mode unless more grip is needed. The extra driven wheels don&rsquo;t cause much of a fuel penalty either &ndash; it&rsquo;ll manage 47.8mpg on the combined cycle. <br /> <br /> Which is good. What isn&rsquo;t good is that the 140bhp diesel engine doesn&rsquo;t really feel up to the job. The roads we drove on were hilly and rather good fun, but the Alhambra didn&rsquo;t seem to like hustling along with too much urgency. It didn&rsquo;t feel like it would be that much fun to drive if you were five up with a boot full of luggage (or journalists, ahem). And not fun in the &ldquo;let&rsquo;s get the back end out&rdquo; sense of the word, but in the &ldquo;It&rsquo;s time to stir the gears and hope that my clutch leg is up to it&rdquo; sense. <br /> <br /> However, with two in the car it managed well. Being a large MPV, yes there was body roll. But not so much that it may topple over. Which is a comforting thought, no? <br /> <br /> The Alhambra itself is an award winner several times over. It&rsquo;s easy to see why, too. It&rsquo;s got loads of space and plenty of family centric touches (the rear seats that convert into child seats is a work of utter, utter genius) for all to enjoy. <br /> <br /> I can&rsquo;t tell you how much it&rsquo;ll cost because we&rsquo;re not going to get it. Yet. However, there&rsquo;s a small demand there &ndash; customers have been asking about a 4x4 version of &lsquo;normal&rsquo; cars for a while now. Maybe this year SEAT might try to bring the 4x4 MPV back? <br /> <br /> 115bhp TDi<br /> <br /> It&rsquo;s a cheaper alternative to the rest of the diesels in the range. It&rsquo;ll set you back around &pound;22k, which isn&rsquo;t bad at all considering the Alhambra is the size of a small country. <br /> <br /> The engine&rsquo;s limited power means it&rsquo;s not the quickest thing in the world, but that shouldn&rsquo;t matter if you&rsquo;re using it for school runs and ferrying children from A to B in the city. However, it won&rsquo;t take anything heavier with much ease. Still, if you need a large people carrier with a poky wee diesel you can do much, much worse than pick this particular award winner. <br /> <br /> Both of these cars are very capable and fantastic as people carriers. Our advice? Go for the highest spec you can and enjoy. And if you live in the countryside &ndash; wait for the 4x4 to land. It probably will. <br /> <br /> If you can&rsquo;t wait &ndash; go for the 180bhp 1.4TSI. It handles just like an Ibiza should, though the three-cylinder E Ecomotive is a little... sluggish</p> <p> The SEAT Leon Copa &ndash; like the Ibiza Copa before it, there&rsquo;s plenty of toys added in for free. And, like the Ibiza, it handles much like a Leon. Which we&rsquo;ve driven before.</p> <p> The SEAT Exeo Multitronic &ndash; It&rsquo;s an Exeo, which means it&rsquo;s big, comfy and rather quick. The difference with this is the Multironic gearbox. It&rsquo;s a CVT, and it rather works. Though the engine is a bit, erm, agricultural. But we (Alex especially) wanted a bit more power. Which is handy, really, because Citroen brought out the DS3 Racing – a harder, faster and brighter hatch. \n<p class="MsoNormal"> As you can see from the image above, it&rsquo;s pretty bright. Alex and Phil took it to a sleepy village somewhere outside of Oxford for a meeting and pretty much stopped everyone in their tracks. Orange and Obsidian Grey is a colour combo that few can miss. Unless they&rsquo;re colour blind.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> The 204bhp 1.6-litre engine certainly doesn&rsquo;t disappoint, though even with stronger suspension it can be a little wheelspin-y off the line. On the motorway it&rsquo;ll cruise at 70mph at 1,500rpm, which means you can have a quiet conversation with a passenger. But that does mean it&rsquo;s a bit quiet &ndash; not ideal for a super-mega-turbo-nutter-hot hatch.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> The controls are very light, too. So it&rsquo;s all too easy to go into a corner, floor it and understeer. Which can get a little... dicey. Still &ndash; on twisty, windy country road stuff it&rsquo;s brilliant.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> In town the light controls make it nice and simple to steer, but that&rsquo;s not what&rsquo;ll be on your mind &ndash; the brightness of it, stickers and loudness will be. You will get noticed by pretty much everyone. Though you&rsquo;ll find people in BMWs and Mercs won&rsquo;t let you out of junctions, but white vans and chaps in &lsquo;modified&rsquo; cars will. But that’s not the point of it. \n<p> &nbsp;</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> Yes the interior is a bit &lsquo;budget&rsquo; (you will notice this) and the car itself, while very cleverly designed, looks a bit dull (so consumers get used to the tech change before styling changes). There&rsquo;s also the range &ndash; which, at 100 miles, isn&rsquo;t far enough for some journeys. Considering you have to wait 8 hours for the thing to charge, a drive to Scotland from London might take a few days.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> But the type of people who&rsquo;ll buy the LEAF aren&rsquo;t going to use it for long trips &ndash; just commutes and shopping runs. Or station runs. So why are we all moaning about the range? And how often do you do more than 100miles in a day? If it&rsquo;s more than once a month, then no, the LEAF is not for you. At all.</p> <p class="MsoNormal"> It&rsquo;s quiet, quick and handless brilliantly. Certainly good enough for the people who are likely to buy it. The interior is nicely laid out and there&#39;s more than enough room in there for just about anything.&nbsp;</p> <p> The engine is a little gutless though - the motorway (most of the driving we did on the launch) was a bit noisy, though in town it was perfect. The controls are nice and light, while the manual gearbox is easy to use. The optional CVT is much better for motorway work.&nbsp;</p> <p> Sadly there&#39;s no diesel option headed our way because of price worries...&nbsp;</p> <p> Alex was joined by New Car Net&#39;s Massimo Pini for a chat about the car. If you take her out a lot, that is. \n<p> Outside its pretty distinctive &ndash; it&rsquo;s unlikely you&rsquo;ll be missed in a crowd. Especially at night, because it&rsquo;s distinctive LED &lsquo;fangs&rsquo; make sure you&rsquo;re seen at any hour of the day.</p> <p> To drive its pretty fun, but its 150bhp crossed with soft, cruise-y suspension means a &lsquo;spirited&rsquo; start results in more wheelspin than actual movement. While you&rsquo;re moving it has just the right amount of torque to keep you happy though &ndash; a gentle prod on the go-pedal in a sweeping bend will cause a smile on your face.</p> <p> There&rsquo;s plenty of room in the back for tall people (like our Jon) and the boot&rsquo;s pretty big too.</p> <p> Sadly, two things bugged us &ndash; there&rsquo;s no garment hook thing in the back (which, when we were testing it, was actually needed) and the cup holder is so shallow that any sort of movement would cause your coffee to coat either your handbrake or rear passengers&rsquo; legs in Joe.
