The Band II class will be researching the songs from our repertoire in order to create concert program notes. Each song from our program must have a composer biography, program notes for the specific song, and notes about the period of music history that the song originates from. Each section should be short, but informative and to the point. Here are the compositions we will be working on:

J.S. Bach’s Prelude & Fugue in Bb – Baroque Period

W.A. Mozart’s Andantino from his Sonata for Flute and Harp – Classical Period

L.V. Beethoven’s Andante from Symphony No. 7 – Early Romantic Period

P.I. Tchaikovsky’s Overture of 1812 – Late Romantic – Nationalism

Stravinsky’s Finale from The Firebird Suite – 20th Century

Each team member should post his/her part of the project – either the bio, the program notes (about the song itself) or the period notes (about the period of music history). If there are only two people in your group, divide the work as fairly as you see fit. Please remember to link back to this post – and eventually – when all of your teammates posts are complete, you should edit your post to include links to their related posts as well.

Please follow the following criteria:

Be sure to include your Category (Band Journal) and relevant tags (key words)

Be sure your published work is free of any grammatical or spelling errors

Be sure to include links to your sources and/or related web pages for more information

Be sure to use reliable web sources

Be sure to keep your summaries succinct but informative and to the point

Be sure to include Composer dates (birth and death)

Jazz Ensemble! – there are new tunes on PBWorks under the Lab Band folder including I Mean You by Thelonius Monk, Mr. P.C. by John Coltrane, and a fusion/funk tune called Poultry Guest that I think you will all really like. Please download and print what you can or send me a message so I can have parts ready for you if possible by Tuesday. I’ve also included recordings with all tunes and will be adding recordings for the Maiden Voyage book tunes tomorrow as well. We’ll be using these tunes for small groups (lab bands) in the upcoming weeks at the local restaurant gigs and on tour.

Homework

First of all – before we get into this week’s schedule – HOMEWORK! No one has posted or commented on the rehearsal notes that I’ve put up online. I just posted the recording from last week’s rehearsal as well – and there’s a post from three weeks ago that everyone has ignored as well! Please get with the program. I’ll fail the entire class if I must. Do your homework – read the posts about rehearsal, leave a comment if you’re a pre-fresh or in Band I, add a post to your own blog with a link to mine if you’re in band class II! Jazz Ensemble people – you do not need to comment and/or post on the Concert Band critiques, but you can – and I’d like a few of you at least to add a post with a link as an example for the Band II people.

I need you to THINK about music – not just practice it. Please LISTEN to the recordings and THINK about what ou can do to make your part better. What can we do as an ENSEMBLE to improve? THINK!

Fund Raisers

Second item on today’s agenda – FUND RAISERS! Give me a break people – the magazine fundraiser was VERY EASY! You had to either SELL magazines and give me 7-10 names in your book OR just supply 7-10 names and addresses! That’s it! We simply MUST have 100% of all of the magazine sales in by Wednesday NIGHT!

JAZZ ENSEMBLE – just got the bill for the trip – we still need to SELL ADS. this will be the LAST WEEK BEFORE THE CONCERT TO SELL ADS. Please get them in! After this concert we will continue to sell ads – but only for a short time! The ads you sell after March 1st will only appear in the SLAM programs. The trip bills are now due – we need to pay for this trip – but everyone is still being very lazy with the fund raising efforts. THIS IS IT! LET’S GET IT TOGETHER!

CONCERT BAND – people in concert band were not asked to help raise that much money – $150 each – THAT’S IT! That’s what it will cost to get each of you a new concert dress uniform. In order to have new concert dress uniforms in MAY we need to start the purchasing process in MARCH! I cannot start that process if most of you have not participated in the fund raising efforts. If you fail we will simply NOT get new concert dress uniforms!

Schedule

Our rehearsal schedule for this week includes Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 6-8:30 pm for everyone. We will be in the band room both nights. Wednesday evening will be devoted to the 1812 Overture, and we’ll hit all of our other rep on Tuesday evening – especially Beethoven’s 7th. PLEASE visit my blog at talkaboutmusic.edublogs.org and LISTEN to the rehearsal recordings from past weeks.
