ENG 225 - Proposals for Critical/Analytical Essay #1 on Module 1

ENG 225 Students,

Per the instructions you received in class in today's meeting, please write a one-paragraph proposal of what you intend to write about for your first critical/analytical essay for this module (Beginnings to 100 C. E.) and post in on the English blog in the comment box below AND on Turnitin.com in the folder "Proposals for Critical-Analytical Essay 1." I suggest you create your proposal as a MS-Word document first (and save it). As usual, all posts will remain hidden until I release them on the next class meeting.

A hardcopy of your essay's first draft will be due in-class on Monday, September 22 for the peer review .

In the future, if you ever become confused about an assignment, please first utilize the 'buddy system' we set up in class on the first and second days of class meetings for any misunderstandings such as this one. Otherwise, the ultimate way to clear up a misunderstanding is to come by my office during my office hours.

In the comment box below, please . . .

ENG 225 - Critical Essay Assignment Details & Finding Scholarly Sources

3 September 2008

Dear ENG 225 Students,

I hope you are finding success in your search for scholarly sources regarding your selected work of literature from "Book A" and module 1 (Beginnings to 100 C.E). In the near future, we may workshop the articles to determine as a group if they are suitable “academic” resources. If we don’t discuss them in our next meeting, we will discuss them soon.

In the meantime, please read the information below this paragraph. It will give you some guidance on the first paper for this module (Beginnings to 100 C.E). We still have some time but some of you may want to go ahead and begin working on your proposals. The sheet gives you three options for approaching the paper. Choose ONE approach. You will choose from the remaining two for papers two and three. However, which one you begin with is up to you . . .

Dear ENG 121 Students,

Confused on what to do for the upcoming "Formal Oral Presentation" that each of you will need to do for ENG 121? My guidelines, borrowed freely from the University of Hawai’I at Manoa's Dr. Leon James's “Instructions for Oral Presentations," are below. Use my modified guidelines however (thanks Dr. James!) for our course. The first . . .
Free Literature Courses from Seven Universities

That's right, free literature courses. According to a report from education-portal.com, MIT, U of Utah, Utah State U, U of California, Berkeley, U of Sheffield, and others are offering the course material for several literature courses to the public without cost via the Internet. They don't all offer credit but they do offer the same information you'd otherwise pay for from many online degree programs. According to the site . . .

The English Teacher: Teaching Literature--Fiction & Non-Fiction

A new lesson plan resource from Leif Danielson I found in my summer down-time research. This web site--"The English Teacher: Teaching Literature--Fiction and Non-Fiction" contains:

units for teaching facets of literature analysis and appreciation for both fiction and non-fiction literature. Further units will be added. All of these units have been used in the classroom. They have been used with students ranging from 9th grade to college. Teachers should choose the units which they feel are most suitable for the classes they are teaching. Materials on this site can be used for classroom teaching. For other . . . (click HERE to see site)

Thanks for putting this together Leif!
