"Nostalgiya" for the Sochi of the Past http://theholidaze.com/eastern-europe/russia/nostalgiya-for-the-sochi-of-the-past http://theholidaze.com/eastern-europe/russia/nostalgiya-for-the-sochi-of-the-past Currently Sochi is in the news for its upcoming role as the host of the 2014 Winter Olympics. In the winter of 2011, Sochi was a little more personal... Mostly because of its cheap flights to and from Moscow. Having a lot of free holiday time but not a lot of money, a friend and I decided that Sochi in the off-season was an excellent choice. In late December we flew into the local airport, Adler. The airport was small but modern – with an excellent WIFI connection (a pleasant surprise). As we stepped outside we immediately shed our jackets, thrilled to be going without heavy layers for the first time in months. Coming from Moscow's bitter cold, the Black Sea region's 50F weather felt just like summer. Getting to downtown Sochi is a simple matter of hopping on to the right marshrutka (shared taxi) and having the patience to trudge through an hour or more of traffic. We arrived at the beachfront hotel and checked in using the customary mix of Runglish that people in the service industry attempt when they hear you speaking English. There was no line, and only a few people loitering in the lobby. Come to think of it, they may have been workers. Suffice to say, it was quiet. Sochi is definitely a summer resort town. Perhaps I'm ignoring the spirit of such things, but I'd recommend going in the off-season: everything's cheaper and there are fewer screaming, naked children running around. Sure, you can't really swim in the frigid water of the Black Sea mid-winter, but you can tour the town, venture into the awe-inspiring Caucasus Mountains, and walk along the stone beaches. The Black Sea is beautiful even in mid-December, and the city of Sochi stretches all along the beach. Photo opportunities…]]> admin@theholidaze.com (Polly) Russia Wed, 15 May 2013 13:04:30 +0000 Mediterranean Cruise Highlights http://theholidaze.com/southern-europe/mediterranean-cruise-highlights http://theholidaze.com/southern-europe/mediterranean-cruise-highlights Mediterranean Cruise Highlights

This gorgeous coastal city is home to designer boutiques, cosy restaurants serving up sizzling Spanish cuisine, and stunning historical sights. Why not spend some time exploring the beautiful historic quarter, the superb gothic style cathedral, or the lovely 14th century Bellver Castle? Perhaps your Mediterranean itinerary will include a stop in Ajaccio, an attractive Corsican port town. I Want Answers! http://theholidaze.com/miscellany/i-want-answers http://theholidaze.com/miscellany/i-want-answers I Want Answers!
After years of travel I have observed several things that just make no sense to me. I want answers! Why are the seats at the departure gates larger and more comfortable than the ones on the plane? I think this is classic bait and switch. I Want Answers! Why is it when I am 2 minutes late for the plane the doors are closed I am told I will have to pay to rebook another flight? When the plane is late in departing by 2 hours I am told to have a seat and be patient. Speaking of departure gate areas, why are there 15 gates but the restroom is at the end of the terminal? Not only that when you get to the men’s room there are only 2 urinals and 2 toilets with 700 people needing to use them. The airport gift shop always has little samples in trays where the food and candy aisles are. Then why do I get dirty looks from the staff when I sample? Look it doesn’t matter if I eat them all or 1000 people eat one. They are going to be gone anyway. Why is my 2 ounce bottle of contact lens solution considered a security risk by TSA, but put it in a plastic bag and it is all of a sudden safe? Why is my tweezers are considered taboo as a take on item but the lady sitting next to me had knitting needles on the plane? This actually happened, friggin knitting needles! Why does my need to pee correspond to the exact time the flight attendant has the aisle blocked with the food cart? Why do they have bars at airports and then get mad when I try and get on the plane drunk? If the air on…

Solar Eclipse Uganda 2013 http://theholidaze.com/unique-experiences/solar-eclipse-uganda-2013 http://theholidaze.com/unique-experiences/solar-eclipse-uganda-2013 Solar Eclipse Uganda 2013
On November the 3rd, 2013, a total solar eclipse will pass over equatorial Gabon in Western Africa Congo, Uganda, Kenya and finally Ethiopia. For the experienced eclipse chaser in these locations, such a narrow and abrupt eclipse will come with a prominent presentation of the colourful innermost atmospheric layer of the Sun (the chromospheres) and a spectacular view along the axis of the Moon’s shadow. The total phase of a solar eclipse is very brief. It rarely lasts more than several minutes. Nevertheless, it is considered to be one of the most awe inspiring spectacles in all of nature which is worth traveling to go see. The sky takes on an eerie twilight as the Sun’s bright face is replaced by the black disk of the Moon. Surrounding the Moon is a beautiful gossamer halo. This is the Sun’s spectacular sola corona a super-heated plasma two million degrees in temperature. This Actual eclipse of November 3 is the total eclipse of the sun throughout the land.Under rare circumstances, a total eclipse can change to an annular eclipse or vice versa along different sections of the eclipse path. This happen when the curvature of Earth brings different points of the path into the umbra (total) and antumbral (annular) shadows, respectively. Hybrid eclipses are sometimes called annular/total eclipses. The last hybrid eclipse was in 2005 and the next one is in 2013 and will be witnessed in Africa starting from Gabon, Congo, Uganda, Kenya and finally Ethiopia. There are not too many suitable (safe) locations in Africa to view this eclipse, which should, because of the short duration of totality have excellent displays of edge phenomena such as Bailey’s Beads, the chromospheres and diamond ring. Uganda is well prepared for this and has a great location close to Murchison’s National park, that…
