What Does Summertime, Road Tar,
And A Doghouse Have In Common?

Let's just say that the first two will put you in the doghouse in a New York minute.

It was the late 1950's or early 1960s when my best friend's older brother, came across a dilemma that was more challenging than first expected, while walking home one day.

Back in New Jersey, during the heat of summer, repairing the roads was all the rage. Not like today where they just get their asphalt and lay it down as they progress down the road until done. No... this road repair was a project and a half. One worth a young boy's valueable time to watch get done.

Tar went down over the old road. Then came the stones, and finally the big steam roller to press it all down. It looked great when done, but the rest of the summer you had to deal with mom each time you wanted to run into the house to use the bathroom.

You see the tar was always sticking to your sneakers. And it wasn't long before mom caught the culprit who kept bringing that sticky stuff onto her floors. A couple of swats with a belt or a wooden spoon was all it took to teach you to learn how to take off your sneakers before entering the house.

Now let me ask you: Did you think that a little tar on your sneakers was all it took to get in the doghouse? Hell no, that title goes to my to my best friend's brother Jimmie. You see he did what any smart guy would do when coming across a barrier keeping him from getting home on time. Like a good boy, you ask for an adults opinion before you do anything, right?

And that's exactly what Jimmie did. You see he was heading home when he came across a section of road that just got a serious coating of hot tar. And like a stream where the water is running maybe a little bit quicker than you think might make it impossible for you to cross. You decide to chance the risky crossing rather than find a better area to cross.

As a youngster Jimmie asked the men if it was ok to cross here and they gave him the OK. Carefully trying to make it to the other side. The very thing you're thinking right now happened. Yup, Jimmie took a tumble. And to make things worse, a roll or two.

Damn, I wish I had a lemonade stand on the side of the road or something, so I could have seen it happen. Anyway that wasn't the bad part of his day. No, not even close.

It was trying to take himself into his mom's house to clean up, when he got snagged and dragged back out of the house by the ear. Once outside his mom gave him a serious rub down with gasoline and she made sure to make the rub down one he would never forget.

Living next door I heard the moaning and groaning, came to the door and watched this sad event take place. Wow, that boy was in for a very long clean up, not to mentiona good beat'n, and a very long stay in the doghouse. Never the less. When we finally did see Jimmie again that summer, you can tell he was more than ready for the school year to start.

Moral of the story: Never listen to a stranger when they tell you it's ok to cross a freshly tarred road in the middle of summer. And save your breath, rather than try to convince your mom that it was the road crew's fault for you taking a tumble in the tar. She just remembers the tar you just dragged onto her clean floors and all the time she'll spend cleaning up after you.

Oh yeah... the best use for gasoline is cutting the grass on Saturday.

Camping Meets Heavenly Smores

A Recipe For Heavenly S'mores

This summer' s camping and barbecuing can always use something interesting when it comes to chowing down. Steak, hamburgers, hot dogs are all wonderful meals to have at the end of the day, but dessert is the most important part of any meal. It allows everyone to relax out on the patio or around a campfire, talking about the day's activities.

For those of you who are ice cream junkies and never miss a chance to serve up some ice cream at the end of the day; have I got a treat for you. We're not talking about your mom's s'mores either. No, these are the ultimate s'mores. Heavenly S'mores if you will.

To make them you need to bake yourself a few Cinnamon Graham Cracker Waffle Cones. Melt some dark chocolate and warm some marshmallow fluff. When ready, pour the melted chocolate in the Graham Cracker Waffle Cone and coat the inside completely. Pour the excess chocolate out and pop the waffle cone into the freezer for 30 seconds to harden the chocolate.

Next pour in the warmed marshmallow fluff and coat the inside of the waffle cone like you did with the chocolate. You may need to spread the marshmallow around with the back of a spoon to evenly coat over the chocolate.

Don't worry about leaving too much in the bottom of the cone. It's ok :)~ You're just making that last bite the best thing you ever had. As soon as you scoop out the extra marshmallow, you're ready to fill the cone with some ice cream.

I recommend Dreyers Rocky Road Ice Cream if you have it handy. Now, if you're camping, the cones can be made in advance. Just add the chocolate and marshmallow on site so the cones remain crisp.

As far as where do you get the ice cream? May I suggest making it on the spot. Simply take some of that ice you brought to cool your food and place it in a large ziplock bag with some salt.

Now in a small ziplock place the ice cream making ingredients. Seal the small bag completely and place it inside the larger bag that has the ice. Next... sit there and rock the large ziplock back and forth between your hands and watch the ice cream thicken as it gets colder.

When done, just scoop some ice cream into the heavenly s'mores waffle cone and enjoy.

Well, summer's almost here. The kids are getting out of school. The temperature is about to rise, making way for summer fairs and carnivals.

How To Turn An Ice Cream Cone Into A Fortune Cookie Birthday Invitation

For those, at home waffle cone bakers, who want to know how to do something different with their waffle cone maker. Have I got a treat for you. How would you like to turn a waffle cone into a fortune cookie and use it to extend the fun your child has with his or her Birthday Party Preparations?

One day is never enough for any of us to enjoy our birthdays. It seems we want the good times to last forever. And for a child this point is extra true.

Well, take this idea and grow the excitement, building up to the day of the birthday. Your child will love you for it.

Start by have some birthday invitations made on the computer or hand written with the birthday boy or girl’s name, address, date and time of the party, and any other important info you want to add. Begin by placing your invitation strips nearby. Mix up your favorite waffle cone recipe and warm up the waffle cone iron. Need Waffle Cone Recipes that aren’t full of holes and instructions for making waffle cones that don’t leak. Visit the above website.

Before you start baking the waffle cones. Take a long handle wooden spoon out of the kitchen draw. Flip the useful end of the spoon around and place it back in the kitchen drawer just enough so when you close the drawer, the handle of the spoon sticks out. This is what you will use to form your fortune cookies around.

Now you are ready to bake the cones the way you always do. When you are done baking your first waffle cone and it’s ready to be formed into a fortune cookie. Here’s what you do.

Open the waffle iron and place your birthday invitation onto the cone, just above the middle half of the cone. Our free invitation strips have “Your Invited” on them and are designed to have that part sticking out of the fortune cookie. Check them out.

Now grab the closest end of the cone and fold the waffle cone in half, away from you, toward the back of the waffle iron. DO NOT RUN YOUR FINGER ALONG THE FOLD AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CONE.

With both hands. Grab the ends of the waffle cone at both ends of the fold, carefully preventing the top of the cone from folding backward or forward. Keep it straight!

Now move the bottom-center of the cone’s fold over the wooden spoon handle and bend the two corners of the cone down as if having both of your hands touching each other.

Hold the cone in place until the cone cools enough so it will remain in the shape of the fortune cookie as described in the diagram at the top of the page.

Caution: Folding a cone is hot on the fingers. For relief see note below.

Note: Rolling a waffle cone or making a fortune cookie out of a waffle cone can be very hot. The easiest way to find relief is to have a small bowl of ice water and a towel nearby.

Before rolling a waffle cone or forming a fortune cookie; dip your fingers into the ice water until cold. Then quickly dry with a towel and work with the waffle cone.

Another way to keep the fingers cool is the “Tippy Finger Method”. This method is something we are all familiar with. Standing on hot pavement during the summer in bare feet. Rocking back and forth on tippy toes, to keep the feet from burning.

When rolling a waffle cone or forming a fortune cookie. Your fingers will get hot. The way to hold the waffle cone so your fingers feel the heat as little as possible. Is to begin by holding the cone between the thumb and first finger.

Then when the fingers get too hot. Change your grip on the waffle cone. Now grip it between the thumb and the middle finger. Now Tippy Finger back and forth until your done. Then move on to the next waffle cone. I think you'll find the thumb doesn't feel the heat as much as the fingers do.

Putting that little added touch to add profit to what you sell.
Use the Danish way of serving a regular waffle cone. One scoop of ice cream, a teaspoon of strawberry preserves, and dollop of fresh whipped cream. Then give the product a cute name.

The added touch and color this idea adds to the cone your supporters purchase, will make them feel comfortable that the price you charge them is well worth it.

Call the larger sundae cone something fun like "The Giggler". It makes people smile when they hear it and that is what you want to create at your fundraiser. Then make it like you would a sundae in a bowl. Give them a spoon and a napkin and they're off and running.

Then there's the ice cream cone bowl. Just bake the cone and while it's hot off the iron, you simply place the cone over a small upside down glass bowl and mold the cone into a bowl. Let cool and fill it with the customer's favorite sundae toppings. Slap it on a sheet of waxed paper or foil. Give them a spoon and a napkin and they are on their way smiling. Save money on plastic dishes.

The morning trip to McDonald's for breakfast and lunch out with the guys has pretty much come to a screeching halt for a lot of Americans.

Once again we are coming upon the month of July and National Ice Cream Month started by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, claiming the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day.

To commemorate this years National Ice Cream Month I would like to bring to mind the latest history on the much debated Ice Cream Cone. I’ll bet you didn’t realize that yes there is new history to be told on the widely popular ice cream cone.

We all know about the never ending debate on when, where, and who invented the ice cream cone. Was it in the late 1800s, the 1904 World’s Fair, or earlier in Europe? The debate may or may not ever get resolved, but one thing is for sure. The popularity of the freshly made ice cream cone ended quickly with the on-set of manufacturers that sprung up to deliver the ever popular boxed sugar and wafer cones.

So, what ever happened to that wonderful invention? You know, the hand made ice cream cone, freshly baked, still warm, right off the waffle iron. The one filled with its delicious, ice cold, creamy concoction within minutes of it being made?

Well, it has been approximately 80 years since the World’s Fair that started it all, before the hand made ice cream cone we enjoy today would make its return to the American palate. Who was it that brought the freshly made ice cream cone back to America? Was it a man or a woman? An American or a Foreigner?

The person responsible for Americans enjoying the freshly made ice cream cones in their local ice cream establishments is a gentleman from Holte, Denmark; named Jorn Caroe. Jorn came to America with the Jorn Caroe Trading Company and opened The Great Danish Cone Company in Solvang, California.

In Solvang (a tourist town with all things Danish, just north of Santa Barbara) Jorn opened his shop in the early 1980s. He placed one of his cone machines in the window of the shop, fired it up and began immediately creating a line out the door, as customers, lead to his shop literally by their noses, couldn’t wait to taste this hand made delight.

With noses pressed against the glass of his shop, watching each cone being made, a new industry was being created. The return of the 1904 World’s Fair Ice Cream Cone and what we know today as the freshly made waffle cone in ice cream stores everywhere.

Today, even though most people only see the electric version, which put Jorn’s original ice cream cone maker and him out of business. The one thing they weren’t able to do was take away his title of: “The Man Who Reintroduced The World To The Hand Made Ice Cream Cone”.

And this time, since the pre-made ice cream cones out of a box are already here, I believe the freshly made ice cream cone will stick around for a long time to come. After all, its already been over 20 years since Jorn first re-introduced the ice cream cone.

Included in this article is a picture of one of Jorn’s Cone Machines. When I purchased one, I sat down with Jorn and his Vice President Benny Asbjerg for an ice cold Danish beer. I asked him about the cone machine and where the idea came from. It seems his father had the cone machine in use in Denmark before World War II. When the war over ran Europe, his father placed it in the cellar where Jorn discovered it decades later and decided to manufacture the cone maker through The Jorn Caroe Trading Company.

It was a nice try for Jorn. After a couple of years the major appliance companies began making the electric model ice cream cone machines you now see in ice cream shops everywhere. The price was cut to nearly a tenth of what Jorn’s cone maker cost.

Although Jorn’s cone maker was definitely a show piece and entertainment in itself for those who never saw an old world ice cream cone baker in action, Jorn’s fortune in America was not to be. A few years after getting started, Jorn suffered a couple of heart attacks and returned to Denmark.

All that is left are the few cone machines you might find in the windows of America’s Only Real Cone Bakeries and the legacy of the man who made bellies smile again, just like at the 1904 World’s Fair when the ice cream cone was first introduced to the world.

The Original Great Danish Cone Company still exists, across the street from the Old Mission the Spanish built when they made their way across California. Visit Solvang the next time you travel in California and be sure to stop and see the ice cream store that showed Americans just how good an ice cream cone can really taste.

How To Turn An Ice Cream Cone Into A Fortune Cookie

If you’re one of the many people who have discovered making delicious waffle cones at home. Not only might you have discovered creating the next generation of ice cream cone desserts by mixing fantastic flavors of cookie cones with any flavor of ice cream, but enjoying an All American Favorite that’s nothing short of amazing.

From the author who pioneered the Original Flavored Ice Cream Cone learn how to take a waffle cone and turn it into a fortune cookie. Then be creative and do plenty of swell stuff with it.

Send them out with your birthday boy or girl to hand out as birthday invitations. Set them out at your next dinner party as place settings for your guests. Or just have fun giving a fantastic message to someone you care about. The possibilities are endless.

Using the diagram above, here’s what you do…

Make your ice cream cone batter. When ready, heat up your waffle cone maker. Now put just enough on your waffle cone iron to make a full size ice cream cone.

Once the cone is baked and ready to come off the iron to be rolled into a cone; instead roll it following the diagrams below to turn it into a fortune cookie. It’s simple!

Write your fortune or message on a strip of paper and have it ready to insert into cookie.

Wedge a wooden spoon in a kitchen drawer with handle sticking out, in order to bend cookie around.

When ready… take the baked waffle cone off the iron. (Understand you must work quickly)

Place the message on cone as shown above. (Be sure to leave part of message hanging out.)

Fold cone in half.

Place the folded edge of the cone over the wooden spoon handle and bend down. Hold until cookie cools.

An Old World Ice Cream Cone Maker

Believe It or Not: The ice cream cone makers you see today in your neighborhood ice cream parlor are not the original ice cream cone makers that began the waffle cone craze of the 1980s.

The cone makers of today were the product idea of smart appliance manufacturers who quickly wanted to bring to market an affordable cone maker that could be used for the high volume of customers visiting ice cream parlors around the country.

Their ice cream cone makers needed to bake cones fast, so they were electric and able to bake the cones on both sides at once. They also needed to be as simple as the appliances you place in your home, because ice cream parlors weren't going to invest lots of money on a new idea. And finally they needed to be as inexpensive as possible for this new handmade cone idea to spread across America by way of the ice cream parlor.

Appliance manufacturers came up with ice cream cone makers costing approximately $400 for a single cone maker and $800 for a double cone maker. That's nearly 9 times less expensive than the original cone maker Jorn brought over from Demark.

Distributors loved the idea as well because they too would make money from selling waffle cone mix to shop owners who bought cone makers.

But as luck would have it. The person with the original idea, too often becomes forgotten as progress moves ahead when bringing America, in this case, the next best thing to hit the commercial market since sliced bread.

Baking cones with Jorn's machine was a little bit slower than the electric models because the waffle irons needed to be rotated and flipped on the wheel as they passed over 5 gas burners while baking. Six cones could be made at one time. And placing one of these cone makers in your store's window was a show that had customers, young and old, pressing their faces up against the glass. Add to that the wonderful smell of the cone baking as it filled the air outside and people couldn't resist moseying in for a cone.
