because it's autumn, i am hesitantly letting go of my tight grip on the idea of summer. i dream of the tropics.

i love the colours and the warmth of these items. wouldn't it be great to come home to reds, oranges and yellows from the bleak and dreary outside winter world?

talk about doing things well ahead of time.

we're planning to come home to the Philippines in december and while there, we plan to have our daughter christened/dedicated and hold a christening/post-birthday and thanksgiving party as well. she is nearly two, born 8 weeks early and is absolutely gorgeous. it will be the first time most of our family will get to meet her, and it will be about 8 weeks after her second birthday and we wanted a thanksgiving party because the Lord has just been so good to us.

last night, we have agreed to have a carnival-themed party. it would be great for the kids --- we're planning to have face-painting, clowns and magicians.

today i have started to gather ideas for the party, starting with the invitations. and i stumbled upon cathie filian's etsy shop! she's got great items, but i think the ultimate treasure is in her blog, where she discusses diy projects, holds giveaways and basically just shares artistic magic.

reading her blog just makes me want to create and create! if only i had all the time. she's also releasing her own line of glitter, and it looks promising. after all, who doesn't need any sparkle?

i think i'm going to make invitations out of carnival tickets, some glue and a lot of glitter!

finger cuts + end of summer + new items

i had quite a scare this afternoon. i was working in the rumpus on my laptop, updating my twitter account and the CAST blog and my facebook page when i decided to check on my mobile which was in our bedroom. four missed calls and an SMS which said "love, i'm going to the hospital, i cut my finger."

my husband usually helps out in my uncle's charcoal chicken shop on saturdays. visions of the big sharp knives they have in the kitchen flashed through my mind in quick succession. my first thought was: if it was just a simple cut, it wouldn't require a trip to the hospital, would it?

i quickly changed into decent clothes, changed my daughter as well and packed stuff into my trusty nappy bag --- an extra change of clothes for hubby, nappies, clothes, a container of nibbles and a bottle of water for my daughter, medicare cards, my wallet and my mobile. grabbed the car keys and sped out of the estate.

the sky was overcast, and i was praying on the way.

then ciggy, my husband called. he wasn't in the hospital, but in a private clinic. i said i can't talk, i'm driving but i'll see you shortly.

it was just a cut. or cuts, should i say. two fingers (the middle and the ring) on his left hand. deep cuts. but he didn't need stitches. and there was a lot of blood.

there goes my chef.

but thank you Lord, he's ok.

a few minutes after, we were in my aunt's cafe kitchen, and he was again handling a knife, preparing my lunch. my knees were still trembling at this point, but i was able to breathe again. all in a day's work.

we've been having colder days lately. two more sleeps and it's officially autumn. sad to see summer go, but i'm welcoming my favorite season.

it rained. thus, foot traffic wasn't as much as expected at the Blackbird Market on 13feb2010. i have made a few sales, but it was disappointing. on the plus side though, i have made friends, met some really cool people, saw some amazing talent and basked in really really good artistic vibes. all in all, it was a lovely well-spent day. and spent is the word. i crashed when we got home. the next market day is coming (13mar2010) and i am hoping that this one will be better sales-wise. i still need to find a hand mannequin because i think the tiered t-bar jewellery display stand i used previously makes the bracelets inaccessible to customers who want to try them on. it was good for organising, considering the limited table space i had, but it was not really very customer-friendly. i am redesigning my display for easier access to the jewellery. below is a photo of my display, not exactly the best photo, as this was taken using a phone camera.

valentine's day has passed, and we have decided to forgo the traditional valentine's day date, opting instead to have an all-day date three days after. lesser people, no need for reservations, and we have avoided horrible traffic and parking was easy peasy. some photos taken during the day.

my precious little daughter, lilly soleil, was supposed to turn one yesterday, the 17th of december, but she was in a hurry and came 8 weeks early. she is now almost 14 months old, a bit tiny, but a packed little button of energy.

it's always wonderful to end a year with a beginning. doesn't it? we're moving house tomorrow and i'm looking forward to it. i will miss our tiny little yard that my husband has allowed to wildly grow (aka forgot to maintain). i have this view everyday, while working, and i just love dandelions! they are resilient, will grow anywhere, and multiply. yes, i know they're weeds, but still! pretty!

lately i have rediscovered my love for black. i used to have black plates and cups and pillowcases in my old apartment, but i have slowly introduced colour to my things when i got married. i even wanted to paint my apartment walls black! such an elegant and beautiful colour.

inspired by my seafoam tears necklace, today's treasury is a wonderful selection of various sea foam inspired items from artists. this seafoam tears necklace is one of my favorite items in my shop, and if this doesn't sell, i am going to keep it for myself.

we're moving house! amidst all the chaos, i have managed to create this:

etsy lesson #2: don't accept international money orders.

i did the mistake of agreeing to accept an international money order for $20, the item value was $17 and i charged $3 for shipping and handling. i went to the bank this morning to deposit the money order, only to find out that there is a $10 bank fee! after converting USD to AUD, i got $21.01 for the money order less the bank's fee, i just received $11.01 after selling a $17 item. not fair. *sniffs*

my etsy heartbreak + siren necklace + dubai account

i shall start with the not-so-good news. i've had my first etsy heartbreak happen to me three weeks back. someone supposedly bought two items from me, but it turned out that she was a non-paying buyer. initially i waited for her payment, then after 5 days i contacted her via convo and also sent her an invoice. she replied two days later telling me that she didn't have a paypal account, but just wanted to pay using her credit card. i told her no worries, you don't have to have a paypal account to pay using your credit card through paypal and proceeded in giving her a step-by-step guide on how to do it, including a screenshot of the paypal page where she had to click to pay without having to sign up. three days later, i heard nothing from her. i saw her online in gmail and asked whether she was still interested in the items, to which she replied --- "i'm no longer interested, they are wonderful and gorgeous but it's too much hassle for earrings. you can give me negative feedback, i have six businesses and it's not gonna hurt me." i mean, huh? it just broke my heart, that.

good thing i have made something to somehow make me feel better. the siren necklace:

can we ever have more hours within the day? i find that i am busier working from home, than when i still had a full-time job.

i was able to finish a squidoo article yesterday about beading and jewelry-making for beginners, and have made a recommendation for a fantastic resource, the Beading for Beginners eBook. i also was able to update the links on my sidebar (finally!) and have informed those linked. i am planning to feature artists on this blog as a regular thing, i just need to put a few things in order before proceeding. i also managed to make updates and fix my twitter account. aside from that, i listed four items in my etsy shop and sold three!

pretty pleased with the items i have listed. i need to make a few more today just to keep the shop well-stocked. pretty doubly pleased with a couple of deals that were made yesterday as well. a contact from dubai has commissioned me to make items for her to sell over there. also, two soon-to-be brides have commissioned me to make their bridesmaids' gifts as well. business looks to be promising.

now if only i can keep this blog updated, as well as tweet regularly, write articles, develop my facebook page, create an rss feed in this blog for potential subscribers, contribute to and be an active member of my street teams --- down under street team and christian artists street team, find reliable and good quality suppliers, look after bub, learn how to cook (!), do all household chores, be a fantastic wife and do yoga regularly, everything would be swell. phew. that's only a partial list of things to do.

who says being a home-based working mum isn't a full-time job?

it's sunday, and i have been busy.

we were supposed to go on a picnic, but we did not go, even with the food already neatly packed in a nice chiller bag. so we ended up having our own little picnic in our lounge, while watching a dvd. there was much mess in the house, (we had visitors for dinner last night) so i spent most of the morning cleaning up. our stainless steel benchtop is now living up to its name. and the floor is spotless. and i have defeated the somehow bottomless laundry basket. for now.

theLeidy's trinket box needed more items. and i was able to list three today.

offspring

this is a simple pair of earrings, but i reckon it is dainty and fun! matte silver birds are suspended from leverback hooks are below it are different-sized wire-wrapped round rose quartz beads. these earrings are perfect for casual days (think jeans and shirt).

night sky

inspired by the lovely night sky, i decided to make this piece. an antiqued brass chain holds a silver moon, an antiqued brass owl and a yellow star with silver lines (not visible in the photo). romantic, simple, playful and dainty.

lilac heaven

i made this piece upon the request of a friend in dubai, who has a friend who is getting married soon. they are looking at giving jewelry as wedding favors for their bridal party. this is one of the designs i have presented to her. sweet, feminine and romantic, the bracelet has a chunky silver chain with dainty lilac roses and barely pink glass pearls entwining it. a heart-shaped toggle clasp secures the chain, and also carries a larger glass pearl, a silver coin (which can be engraved with the bride and groom's names) and an angel wing.

my fairly new etsy shop

how timely to open a new shop in etsy.

a few days ago, typhoon ondoy (international name Ketsana) hit my beloved home country, the philippines, and has wreaked havoc in the lives of the populace and properties of the entire metro manila area and surrounds. although i am thousands of miles away from the philippines, i do not have any excuse not to extend help to my fellowmen, if only through reposting and retweeting important messages in social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to disseminate vital information to those needing it.

aside from that, i have put up a fundraiser in my etsy shop which will run until the end of october. a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the victims of the calamity which has unexpectedly struck my country via the philippine national red cross.

i realize that i have been presented with an opportunity to help even from overseas, and as i hope for the success of my etsy shop, i'm giving it a good head start by making it an avenue to do something worthwhile.
