I’m planning my wedding right now and I’m really glad I’ve got www.satellitetvfamily.com channels so I can catch up on all the wedding shows out there. I love Say Yes to the Dress (who doesn’t) and I also really like all the David Tutera wedding shows – I like these more than the ones that just feature brides and their friends and grooms yelling at each other (I’m looking at you, Bridezillas…) I just don’t understand why some of these people would get married when they talk to each other the way they do and I much prefer the shows that show people really getting excited about the prospect of spending their lives together. I know I can’t wait to walk down the aisle to Tom and I know he feels the same way – why on earth would I want to tape some show about us fighting all the time? If we were fighting all the time I think we’d need to reconsider getting married! I guess I’m not here to judge but seriously, I’m judging…

I'll admit I hadn't heard of them before but I was so excited when their marketing person contacted me via email to ask me if I would do a review of their new book and blog about it here! It was the first time anyone had asked...I am so flattered! Now, just because they asked doesn't mean I won't give a real review. Although, they have that going for them since they are the first (I hope of many), but I got to tell you that the "Expecting" books were not my thing, I was more the Vicki Iovine kind of prego gal so I am looking forward to reading some "real" info. about pregnancy and everything related.

I just got the book so give me some time before the review. I can't read the whole thing but these books are meant to be read when you need them the most.

I hope you come back for the review...Oh and the name of the book is "The Mommy Docs Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy" by Yvonne Bohn (Author), Allison Hill (Author), Alane Park (Author), Melissa Jo Peltier (Contributor.

Nurtureshock on Sibling Rivalry

Okay, I admit I've been remiss in posting on this blog. I've been busy developing my own business. But, I am still able to read a whole host of books in the mean time: it's my addiction. So I thought I'd post again.

My ongoing review of Nurtureshock. I read this book in bits & pieces because I want to savor it.

A number of parents worry that their "only-child" will have certain disadvantages as a result of being an only: undeveloped social skills, no conflict-resolution skills, and the list goes on. Well, Nurtureshock found through a number of studies that not only does having a sibling not necessarily teach better social or conflict resolution skills but actually has the adverse affect as a result of siblings bullying the weaker one. The weaker one just accepts it and moves on but it doesn't necessarily make that sibling a better individual.

Well, I say "Amen" to that, because I remember the days of being tortured by my sibling.

Anyway, to all the only's out there...more power to ya!

So, this book is so good that I am going to do a running review of it...Nurtureshock, is pretty shocking. Do you agree or disagree with the above?...it's straight out of the first chapter and something I know I do too many times a day to my kids.

This is a great book for not only first time parents but experienced parents as well. It should be required reading for "first-timers" because I fell into a lot of the traps that Pamela spoke of. e.g. baby sign language, the best crib I could afford, toys galore, best crib bedding, and all the extras you are sold on that as an emotional, vulnerable parent you buy, but don't really need. I am two weeks away from having my second baby and I have to say that none of this stuff matters. As long as I can feed the new baby, clothe in onesies and have diapers and wipes, we're good to go. The industry sucks us in as parents and has us keep spending money unnecessarily. As a writer Pamela was able to speak with industry experts and it was scary how they figure out how to market to us. They really analyze us to death and do everything in their power to make sure we will spend money on their product or service. Yes, I realize this is done to some degree but you have no idea until you read what Pamela found out.

This was a great book and I highly recommend to all first as well as second, third fourth, etc. timers as well.

I LOVED this book! I'm 41, just had baby number 2 and could identify with a lot of her experiences. Although her last book was about a boy who accidentally burned his face off (which I did pick up at the library and read half-way through...still not sure how I feel about it) this one was quite funny....! My favorite part? When she says she has IWTKMFH Disorder after many nights of sleeping next to her husband and all his quirky noises he makes while sleeping (I have experienced this myself...but w/my own husband). What is this disorder you say??? "I-Want-To-Kill-My-F_ _ _ _ _ _ Husband Disorder" I say. Ahh...many a nite he's loudly breathing through his mouth and I'm lying awake wondering how I'm going to do it....just kidding...but it drives me insane......!

Anyway, pick up the book, I guarantee you'll get at least one chuckle out of it, maybe even a belly laugh...I did.

Okay, if you have postpartum depression/anxiety you MUST read this book. Although, maybe not because Brooke had a severe case of PPD and sometimes just reading about anxiety and depression can make you have it. But, I applaud her for getting this out in the open. I have PPD with my second child who is now 12 weeks old. With meds., therapy and a support group I am getting better. But so many people (including Moms) are so unaware of how many of us have been severely affected by PPD. It's like the hidden disorder no one will talk about because giving birth is supposed to be such a happy time. Well, when it isn't a happy thing from the Mom's point of view, everyone suffers...people need to pay attention to this disorder and not frown on those of us who have it and use meds. to get through it. This book will help you understand how serious this disorder can be and if you have it will make you feel like you are not the only one...

I am so sorry to everyone who entered my contest and never heard back. My laptop went on the fritz for 2 weeks after the contest ended and then I suddenly found myself with a job...! Because I went from being a SAHM to being a WAHM sooo quickly I was waaayyyy overwhelmed. So, my laptop is now back and good (well, sorta now the battery is dying, but at least the plug is now fixed) I made it alive through my third week of work and found my way back to my blog. Oh, and did I forget to mention that I am 6 months prego and very exhausted.

So I will pick a winner of the contest and get that book sent out.

The one thing I haven't left behind of course are my books...I've read many since I've last blogged and now I just have to find the time to post about them.

Hopefully I haven't lost too many of you....check back for the next review. Oh and last but definitely not least, I had a surprise visit from one of the author's of "I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids". I couldn't believe it....they actually read this stuff. I was so flattered. I'll post about it when I come back, I need sleep.

Okay, another great North Carolina author (my now home state). I didn't know there were so many. This woman is my kind of Mom. She's not uptight whatsoever and she tells it like it is. I like her view on bathing children. Babies don't get very dirty. " ...a preschooler can go for 23 straight days without washing more than his fingertips" (she counted) and that it can be a relaxing time for Mom while she's perched on the commode. She says what you don't do: "Crouch down with a washcloth and scrub. The bubbles in the bath - really, they won't get urinary tract infections from a single capful- will do the cleaning." And when she wonders how long to let them stay in the bathtub, her mother replied until the bathwater gets cold and your child complains. Works for me!

Read this if you want to laugh a lot, sigh in relief and end up with the feeling that maybe I'm not such a bad parent after all. We're all only doing the best we can with what we got.

First, let me say that I will periodically post about books that are not necessarily Mom-How-To related. However, since everybody has a Mom every book somehow still applies and this one definitely has a strong mother theme.

Wow, what a magical story. Usually when I read a jacket flap that references other-worldly themes I'm not always sure I want to read them for fear it will be corny. This story is anything but. This Southern novel is the author's second book and she hails from my new home state of North Carolina. There are so many excellent NC authors, and I'm glad to have found this one. This story is about a young woman who lives and takes care of her incredibly self-centered mother. The main character manages to break free of her mother's apron strings to find new friends, sisters she didn't know she had, and romance she never thought she would obtain. The magical part I will let you find out for yourself because it's a nice, comforting surprise.

Short, sweet story that gives you the warm fuzzies. A must read chicklit.
