What's the meaning of GNR's The Spaghetti Incident album?

This site is called The Spaghetti Incident? after the Guns N Roses punk song cover album of the same name.

It was the fourth and last studio album* of what was known as the most dangerous band in Rock And Roll.

If you have read Slash's biography you'll know just how true that was! The album made it as high as number 4 on the American Billboard 200.

The Spaghetti Incident?

Here's the Rolling Stone review of the Spaghetti Incident? It's a fairly fair assessment. More recently GNR and Axl have announced that Chinese Democracy will be released on November 23 2008.

Dr Pepper is not happy.

So what was the Spaghetti Incident? What were the events around it?

Good old Wikipedia suggests that the meaning of the The Spaghetti Incident?was explained by then GNR drummer Matt Sorum.

The title is a reference to a food-fight between Axl Rose and Steven Adler (former original drummer), involving spaghetti.

Adler was fired from GNR supposedly for his drug habit making him unable to play drums. Adler's took a lawsuit against GNR during which time Adler's attorney referred to the food fight as "the Spaghetti Incident".

It is suggested that the attorney's choice of name for the incident was a reference to the David Bowie movie, The Linguini Incident.

A source of amusement for the remaining GNR members it was chosen as the title for the album with the addition of a "?" to perhaps ask the question,"Really Steven?".

Another story I heard was that Spaghetti was code for Herion.

The band once hid Adler's Spaghetti which sparked a huge hissy fit which ultimately become known as a Spaghetti Incident?

Not sure of the veracity of this story as Slash's biography suggests Addler used the phrase Peanut butter as he kept his stash in the butter in the fridge.

Motely Crue also have a Spaghetti Incident story of their own. As you would expect about girls girls girls.

The book ‘Rock Star Babylon’ suggests that the Crue's Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx held a contest between themselves to see who could go the longest without washing, showering or bathing in any way, yet still be able to sleep with groupies without them being ill or bailing out.”

The story goes they went around for two months whilst their personal hygiene all while having sex with as many woman as they both could.

The Spaghetti Incident was so named when a lucky groupie gave Nikki Sixx fellatio and vomited her dinner of spaghetti all over his junk. Yum huh? Who knows how true this was?!

*Yeah we know Chinese Democracy is out but let's face it, it's an Axl solo album!

U2's Joshua Tree Tour Set

U2 have played for the first time ever, the classic Joshua Tree album live in concert. It's the 30th anniversary of the album's release and it has been re-issued.

The venue was BC Place, in Vancouver, Canada.

U2 opened the show with some early classics that were released prior to the Joshua Tree and then the band kicked of the album run through with Where The Streets Have No Name.

U2 ended the quick with a standard set of encore songs but notably debuted a new song, The Little Things That Give You Away.

Mumford and Sons opened for U2.

The ten best 'pauses' in rock songs

Sometimes playing nothing at all can be one of the best things in a song. What is this pause? It’s a ‘violation of expectation’ used to build tension which in turn creates excitement for the listener. Delaying an expected note in a song is a great trick that many guitarists, pianists and other musicians use - and when a pause is used in a song structure, the effect can be tremendous.

Popular music producers such as Bob Clearmountain have used them to such effect that the 'Clearmountain' is often referred to when talking about the pause!
It an adage that 'silence is golden' and if that's the case, here's ten classic songs that have some golden moments by way of a deliberate pause.

The first song in this list is the inspiration for this post - I was listening to it while on the bus and the pause made me sit up and pay attention:

Living on the Edge by Aerosmith from the Get a Grip album.

Check out this video that starts with a nude Steven Tyler hold his meat and two veges and ends with Edward Furlong sharing his sandwhich with a bully. The pause is at about the 3.30 minute mark. The song is seemingly building to a big moment, yet the pause drops in which leads to a drum beat and then the big moment. It's brilliant.

Wonderwall and Don't Look back in Anger by Oasis from What's the Story (Morning Glory)?

Wonderwall is probably my favourite song. Every time I pick up the guitar I ending up chuck on a capo on the second fret and go for gold. And the golden moment in Wonderwall is the pause that comes just before the start of the second verse. At the 2 minute mark Noel Gallagher delays the strum of the Em chord to perfection which means when the chord chimes it's a piece of heavenly pop.

This next pause is perhaps a little bit of a cheat. Don't Look Back in Anger is Noel's signature tune. He sang it rather than Liam and it went to number one on the British charts. It also has a great little drum fill that starts just after the solo. It's the most briefest of pauses you could count as a pause but the linking of the end of the solo and the drum fill 'feels' like a pause. Great song moment. Here it is at the 3.30 mark.

Everybody Hurts by R.E.M. from Automatic for the People

One of R.E.M.'s greatest singles, Everybody Hurts features Peter Buck playing simple arpgeggio chords and soaring vocals by Micheal Stipe. The song is about grief and death. So when the pause after the line "you're not alone" at the 3 minute mark, it gives you time to think, fuck, yes I feel sad, yes I feel glad, yes I loved that person or whatever it is you want to think. When the arpeggio picks up right after, it almost feels like life has just given you a gentle nudge to say, you're still here, come with us, your hurting but you're not alone...

Closing Time by Semisonic from Feeling Strangely Fine.

One song that’s perhaps well known for its great pause is Closing Time by Semisonic (a band that should never have broken up in my opinion). Check out the pause just before the chorus atthe 3minute mark.

This is the song that has what’s known as the 'ClearmountainPause' - Semisonic's producer Nick Launay is quoted assaying “we had to have our mastering engineer, Bob Ludwig, create the pause bystretching the existing pause, layering it, making it as long as he could.Thereafter, we referred to that part of the song as the “Clearmountain Pause.”At shows over the next few years, the pause got longer, and longer, and longer until it was a musical piece unto itself.”

Love Shack by The B52s from Cosmic Thing

Tiiiiinnnnn rooooffff PAUSE rusted ! That's pretty much all you need to know about this classic song. Katie Pierceson delayed enunciating 'rusted' oh so perfectly about a seemingly nonsensical line about the shack. Rust never sleeps, I guess.

River of Dreams by Billy Joel - River of Dreams

I loved this song when it came out. It was catchy as anything and it still is - and it's 4 second pause is perfect. Coming off a funky jivin' feeling the listener is left thinking, "where did that good stuff go?" and is rewarded very well when rescued with 'in the middle of the night"

Never Tear Us Apart by INXS was apparently another Clearmountain pause. This is song has a very bold pause - if fits neatly between Hutchence's lyric and a dramatic guitar riff - and the drama is surely created and added to by that pauuse. It's at the X minute marrk.

Closing Time's pause also inspired a book chapter in A visit from the Goon Squad by author Jennifer Egan which features famous pauses in rock songs. So, with a nod to that book, here's two songs from it:

The Gunners are back and so are we. On 1 April 2016, Slash and Axl shared a cup of cool-aid, buried the hatchet public ally and with some old school and new school members of GNR, they bashed out a set at the famous Troubadour venue.

Playing a selection of classic GNR cuts, a sweet cover from The Spaghetti Incident and two songs from Chinese Democracy, GNR announced to the world they aren't finished just quite yet.

The gig was the first in what has been billed, the 'Not in this lifetime' tour. Featuring Axl, Slash and and Duff, there was a notable absence of Izzy Stardlin. While he has performed with Axl several times over the last 15 years, he's under er.. no illusions as to the potential chemistry that's been unbottled so he's decided to stay away. For now?

We’ve come out of semi - retirement as The Gunslinger sent us this pix of a Sonic Youth set list from when they toured NZ in the 1990s when they were riding a wave of popularity due to the success of ‘grunge’ and what not, not that you could accuse Sonic Youth of actually being a grunge band per se. Perhaps the very definition of alternative music?

Anyways, pundits on the Slow Boat records Facecrack page reckon this set is from the Dirty Tour and is possibly from a gig in Christchurch in 1992/3.

OMG, something awesome to bring us out of our slumber. Here’s a video of Mike McCready doing a sweet version of Eddie Van Halen’s Eruption. The rendition isn’t too shabby for a live performance on a rainy, rainy night.

This solo was shredded out at Wrigley Field, Chicago on July 19, 2013 as Pearl Jam began a new tour to promote their newest album, LightningBolt.

At the gig PJ debuted two new songs to the world. The first was the title track from the album, the second being the slow but sure Future Days which featured album producer Brendon O’Brien playing along on keys. I’m picking the later will become a fan favourite in no time at all.

Scott Weiland won't be so happy in his galoshes this morning:

The Stone Temple Pilots have fired singer Scott Weiland.

In a one-sentence news, publicist Kymm Britton said: "Stone Temple Pilots have announced they have officially terminated Scott Weiland."

It said: "I learned of my supposed 'termination' from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press. Not sure how I can be 'terminated' from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that's something for the lawyers to figure out," Weiland said.

"In the meantime, I'm looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday."

The band's 1992 debut, Core, has sold more than 8 million units in the United States.

Their hits include Vasoline, Interstate Love Song and Plush, which won a Grammy in 1993 for best hard rock performance with vocal.

Weiland was also in the supergroup Velvet Revolver with Slash and other musicians, basically after he was fired for the first time by STP a few years back.

Trust Noel to say something witty about his brother singing Wonderwall at the Olympics closing ceremony.

At a War Child benefit concert at Dingwalls in London on Tuesday night, Noel hit back by dedicating his version of Wonderwall to "Stratford's finest Oasis tribute band".

Since Oasis split up three years ago after an argument at a music festival in Paris, the brothers have been estranged. Noel has frequently played his old band's songs live, though Beady Eye have resisted – until their concerts supporting the Stone Roses this summer, when they played Morning Glory and Rock'n'Roll Star.

Liam clearly needs to find a really good wort chiller and use it to make some beer and then drink it and calm the hek down.

Beady Eye's version of Wonderwall was their first public performance of the song.
