Ralph Lauren - La Plage Collection

Design is constantly evolving and keeping a current look can easily become like a dog chasing after it's tail. What inspires and draws me to Ralph Lauren is their designs are classical, but fresh and updated. The use of traditional furniture silhouettes, rich textured fabrics and pleasing colors are inviting and comfortable. They're traditional in their approach, but not stiff and formal. In our "Recession Chic Economy" this stands the test of time and allows one to morph into new looks gracefully without breaking the bank account.

The striking piece above was given new life by the choice of it's upholstery selection. Mixing fabrics together can be tricky, but mixing fabrics within a single piece of furniture is even trickier. This approach has been around awhile, but RL took a vintage chair and breathed new life into it using this technique. Often when different fabrics are used within a single piece it tends to look whimsical bordering on cartoonish. A little bit of this look goes a long way and less is definitely more when using this in a room. One or two pieces in a space is probably enough. When it's done well it's a home run and you recognize it when you see it, because it appears to flow naturally and seamlessly.

Did everyone have a nice Easter? I enjoyed dining at an elegant 1890 Italianate style mansion that was turned into a restaurant. Luckily, I had my camera and took photos as I wandered around. I’ll post about it at a later date, but wanted to share a little sneak peek. The home was built by a lumber barren and is rumored to be haunted by his first wife who mysteriously passed away six months after moving in. There was talk in some circles she was poisoned by her better half, but that was never proven. This photo was taken in one of the upstairs bedrooms now referred to as the ladies lounge. If you look closely you can see the trees are starting to leaf out here in the Great Lakes Region.

We had a surprisingly mild winter, but yesterday the wind kicked up enough to knock the power out for several hours on my side of town. I got tired reading in semi darkness so decided to do a little Thrifty Treasure Hunting! I visited a couple favorite spots that were not affected by the outage and found several nice items.

I scooped up this pretty silver plated tiered tray, which now resides in my dining room. I added a silver fork and thong hors d'oeuvre set I already had from an earlier garage sale find. I'm always curious about any marks on the back and the hors d'oeuvre set says "EPNS Made In Sweden". It's electroplate, but if you pay attention you might get lucky and run across a valuable silver piece. Silver is marked in different ways and this is referred to as Hallmarks. If a piece is marked or has a symbol you can easily do a quick search and see what you're dealing with.

After I got home I gave everything a little polish and thought they turned out quiet nice for the grand sum of $4.00. This photo is a little deceiving, because the tiered tray looks bigger then it is. Actually it's only around 10” tall. It has fine detailing I like it and the price was right.

I want to mention since I’ve received a few comments about the topic of Thrifty Treasures that YES, I love the thrill of the hunt and finding a good bargain! The piece has to make sense, but often I find interesting objects on the second hand market. Tomorrow's antique just might be today’s Thrifty Treasure.

Did you know? Technically to be considered an antique the item has to be 100 years old and anything younger is classified as a collectible?

After my silver score I spent a lot of time poking around in the dish section, but kicked myself for not putting a colorful ceramic rooster in my cart. I came back for it just in time to see another shopper put it in hers! First rule always put anything in your cart you're not sure of and make your final decision later!

I wasn't disappointed for long, because walking back to the register I spotted this Early American chest that had just been placed on the floor. The drawers were in the wrong slots so it looked disheveled, but that worked to my advantage. I asked for the price and the gal said $30.00 and this one didn't get away. I needed something exactly this size in a cherry finish to blend in with some Pennsylvania House furniture in my living room. This is not the quality of Pennsylvania House, but the size and color is good. One of the drawers on the inside is marked Dixie, which was a mid priced furniture company that was eventually bought out by Lexington.

This angelic presence keeps a watchful eye on top of my new "Treasure Chest".

Standing in line at the register I noticed this striking velvet riding helmet hidden on a low shelf. It was marked $10.00 and I didn’t hesitate to buy it. I had been looking for one to go in the bedroom of a client’s daughter since it was designed in an equestrian theme. Doesn't it make the perfect finishing touch on her nightstand? It has a sculptural quality that makes a statement and adds a touch of whimsy.

Here is one more glance at the Italianate mansion. Don't you think the detailing is breathtaking? I adore old homes and in my book they may not always be thrifty but they are certainly treasures!

I’m a history lover and always interested in the background story so I’m including a little information about the basic ingredient used to make these beautiful and chic pieces.

Zinc it a is a bluish-white lustrous metal also known as Spelter. When mined it is not usually found by itself. Zinc ore is mined using both underground and surface open-pit methods or a combination of the two.

In the past it was commonly used to make many 19th-century inexpensive, cast articles such as candlesticks, clock cases and early 20th-century Art Nouveau and Art Deco items.

The term galvanizing refers to the process where zinc is used to cover metal that will rust.

Aberlyn No. 6 Deep Level Mine

This photo is of a large old Lead and Zinc mine in Gwydyr, North Wales. This area boasted several mines during it’s heyday of metal mining between 1850 and 1919.

The mine is composed of many floors and this deep level drains the mine to the mountainside. Notice the fine brick arched lining with many “straws” growing from the gaps, some as long as 3’-0”. It’s described that at several points along its length water spurts out of the walls similar to a car wash!

Pottery Barn: Egan Mirror & Markham Console Bar

This 1914 Victorian beauty is the home of my wonderful client, who generously gave me carte blanche to write about the design work I’m doing for her. We met by lucky coincidence when I first started this blog. She is a talented painter and professional writer who used to pen interior design articles for the Baltimore Sun. Turned out we had a lot in common and corresponded for several weeks then realized we lived 15 minutes apart! We met for lunch one afternoon and conversed for several hours, then she hired me. Talk about lighting striking in a good way! Over this past year she become a valued friend as well as a client.
Her historical home is truly an inspiration to work on and I’ve done my best to keep its integrity in tact. The first time I laid eyes on it my heart skipped a beat as I sat in the driveway admiring its fine architectural details. It reminded me of the Owen's house in the movie Practical Magic staring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
Her home will be a work in progress for awhile as there are many projects planned for the future. It has excellent bones and was built in the era before power tools by the skilled hands of master craftsmen. There is striking woodworking and stained glass through out. It’s perched on a lake and hosts two decks with accordion doors that swing wide open that is perfect for entertaining. The bathrooms were remodeled in the 60’s and updating them is one of my assignments. Currently I’m working on the large first floor powder room. It’s a total gut job and I’m in hot pursuit of some special pieces for it.

BEFORE

My client purchased this home because the living room could accommodate the baby grand piano. However, the living room has long and narrow proportions, so it was difficult to create a seating arrangement good for conversation. The piano fit, but took up most of the space on that side of the room. In the center is a fireplace that is not pictured (if you look carefully on the right you see the hearth) which compounded the issue. The other main problem is the dining room is small and there is no room for a buffet. This is a problem because my client entertains often for large groups and needs extra serving space along with a bar set up. My solution was to move the piano to the other side of the room, actually to the adjoining room which has double glass doors. Doing this opened the space, and the piano could still be part of the room when there is a party. The doors can be closed if someone wants to play in private or not disturb others with the noise.

A serving and beverage area was created next to the dining room by adding the Pottery Barn mirror and console bar. The mirror also visually opens the room and reflects the pretty view from the window across from it.

This is Dan a man of many talents! He's a good natured soul who knows how to hang a mirror, handle a paint brush and does quality workmanship.

The mirror weighs over 100 pounds and these are old lath and plaster walls. I bought an electronic stud finder specifically for this home and it has proven to be an invaluable tool. Older homes often don't have any rhyme or reason how the studs run. I've worked on many older homes, but this one takes the cake!

I stood on the ladder and marked the studs, then it took two strong backs to hang the mirror. I measured carefully to be sure both pieces they would fit in the space before placing the order, but there wasn't much room to spare. To my delight the installation went seamlessly.

Pottery Barn introduced the Egan Mirror in their catalog around Thanksgiving; however it was not actually available until three months later. A slight irritation, but it was worth the wait.
So for three months I patiently twiddled my thumbs and hummed the Rolling Stones Time Is On My Side!

Don't even get me started about the new Restoration Hardware Oviedo Chaise!!!

My client obviously didn't choose Victorian style for her furniture. However all these items she will take with her if she ever moves. Things that will become a permanent part of the home will be more traditional, like the items selected for the bathrooms.

The Markum Console Bar is a versatile piece and can be used in a variety of ways if you think outside of the box. I especially like the dropped down section that holds the wine bottles. If you look closely you can notice the door knob wine stopper next to the vase. I found the stopper in an adorable store called The Lambs Tail Antiques.

Tip: The day I took these photos, I stopped by my local grocery store to pick up fresh flowers. Their selection looked tired, so I opted for this bunch of babies breath instead. I often use babies breath this way and even when they dry out they still look nice for a few months. As I was checking out the cashier asked if I was making an arrangement with them, so I explained I was only using the babies breath, she liked the idea and told me she had never heard of doing this so I thought I would share it here.

This became the music room and holds the baby grand piano. Sun resistant pull down shades were installed to protect the piano. Dan painted the room the same color as the living room. It’s not finished yet, but it’s getting there.

An updated ceiling fan is on the "To Do List".

Inspired By Living An Authentic Life!

The Stylish House is for kindred spirits interested in making their NEST clever, stylish, warm and inviting!

Trust me, I know what the “Good Stuff” is, but the last time I checked I still wasn’t a Rockefeller descendant! When some people meet me for the first time socially they've commented “I could never have you come to my home because it isn’t up to snuff”. Or they want to visit mine to check it out, and give it the scratch and sniff test! In the food chain of life there will always be someone with less and someone with more. I appreciate a touch of whimsy and follow a healthy philosophy, which is to relax and enjoy what I have. Gaining confidence comes from doing quality work to the best of your ability, and not getting hung up on unachievable perfectionism. What good is it to create a meticulous home if you’ve driven everyone insane during the process, and accumulated a mountain of debt?

I believe you should throw that dinner party even though your table is a hand me down from your mom.

I believe there is a maturity and satisfaction that comes from saving up for a special piece that you will enjoy for many years.

I believe in creating a game plan that makes the most of what you have to make your decorating dollars stretch as far as they can.

I believe the most interesting rooms are developed over time.

How To: Test Paint Colors

Did you know when you enter a space your eye notices COLOR first, and paint is the #1 most effective tool that creates the most bang for your buck?

However, finding that perfect chic color can be more elusive then buying a winning lottery ticket, and can quickly becomes a lesson in frustration! Have you ever picked a paint color, with high hopes, which then turned into "what the heck was I thinking" once it was brushed on the wall? Hands down, I'm asked the most questions on the topics of color and paint. So, I thought it would be helpful to share some of the things that have worked for me.

Paint is such an important mainstay in my line of work that several years ago I developed the following method for testing paint. I did this after realizing those ridiculously teeny tiny paint manufacturer samples that were offered were not nearly big enough to be effective. What I did to solve this problem was make inexpensive, quick and easy sample boards that are an effective visual aid. I've made many for myself and clients, and they are such a good tool I wanted to share this idea.

Making a sample board can save time, money and the frustrations of color selection. I would rather buy a small sample of paint and test it out before making a final commitment. Even if I have used a paint color before, it can change due to lighting and flooring.

Sample Board Advantages:

Eliminates marking up existing walls, especially good if you're not going to paint right away.
Boards are large enough to be realistic to visualise what the paint will actually look like in the space.
Boards can be moved around to see how they work in different lighting, and how they look next to existing furniture and textiles.
They are inexpensive, quick, easy to make and reusable.

Instructions

Start by purchasing a piece of foam core board from a craft or office supply store. Foam core is thick and sturdy so the paint doesn't leak to the backside. Because of this both sides can be painted different colors. It's sturdy enough that when propped up it will stay in place.

Cut the foam core board with a straight edge into manageable sizes. I cut mine into three pieces. I use a rotary cutter, but a serrated knife or scissors can be substituted.

Tip: If you're doing a lot of home improvement projects, design work or crafts, I recommend investing in a rotary cutter, mat and straight edge. They come in affordable kits, and they are extremely useful for a wide variety of tasks. I prefer a large diameter rotary cutter, because I've noticed the blade doesn't get dull as quickly as the smaller ones.

Use inexpensive foam brushes to apply two coats of paint. Let the first coat set up before applying the second coat. Use long strokes, going in the same direction.

Finished Sample Boards

The boards are large enough to accurately judge how the paint will look in the space. They can be moved around easily to see how the room lighting affects the color.

Boards are labeled with masking tape.

Powder Room Makeover & Crown Moulding Tips!

I’ve been tackling several DIY projects the past couple of weeks and this one involved bonding with my bathroom! I gave it a mini makeover by changing the mirror, adding a light fixture, painting, and installing 10" crown moulding. Eventually, I will upgrade the faucet and towel bars, but the current ones are fine for now.

My husband and I have added crown moulding to several homes we’ve owned. It’s not terribly difficult, but takes time and attention to detail. Doing it ourselves has saved significant money, and the moulding added so much character and a high end touch.

My home already had 10" crown moulding in other rooms that I needed to match. My first floor has 9' ceilings so the deeper mouldings doesn't overpower the rooms.

I especially like the pheasant feathers in this floral arrangement a friend created for me. I hung it at eye level making sure it doesn't interfere with the loo.

The mirror was purchased at HomeGoods. It's not exactly the perfect size needed for this space, but it's acceptable even for particular me! Using it saved a bundle rather then having something custom made. The mirror is nice quality, it has beveled glass and there is good detailing on the frame so I'm satisfied with it.

This cabinet is the perfect place to store toilet paper. It's small enough to be tucked in the corner of this compact space.

BEFORE: The light fixture was the worst offender to moi. I toyed around with framing the existing mirror, but after shopping around decided to buy a new one.

When we removed the mirror we covered everything to make sure if the glass broke it would not damage anything. We wore gloves and eye protection, and luckily it came off with ease.

The bathroom had a decent toilet and pedestal sink. Wood floors are fine for a powder room, but not usually good in a full bath due to water issues.

Crown Molding

I used two types of moulding for this project. I was trying to match existing moulding found in other areas of my home and these came close.

Every time I install crown moulding I watch this informative video as a refresher. Tom Silva from This Old House explains step by step how to make the cuts. It's a bit tricky at first, but goes fast once you get the hang of it.

For the narrow moulding a simple miter cut was used at the joints.

My husband and I worked together on this project. Someone more experienced might be able to do this alone, but we found this to be a two person job. One person needs to hold the piece as the other cuts. It also helps to have a second set of hands when installing long spans of moulding. Make sure you check with a level as you attach each piece to the wall.

NOTE: I've installed a lot of crown moulding, but it has all been painted when finished. I use spackling paste to hide any imperfections at the joints, which is key. My cuts are not good enough to do crown moulding that is only stained. For stained crown moulding I would definitely hire an experienced wood worker.

To attach the moulding to the drywall use a stud finder to locate the studs, then use finishing nails countersunk with a nail set.

We invested in this manual hand miter saw several years ago. It was less expensive then the a power one and is studier then a plastic miter box. It does a good job for what we need.

Spackling paste makes a difference in this type of work! Anytime you paint kitchen cabinets, chair rails, crown moulding or trim, use it to fill nail holes, joints and seams. It makes the finished project look professional and solid when completed.

My walls are smooth, so I simply painted the area between the two mouldings to create the look of it being one large piece of deep moulding.

Tip: I prefer medium to heavy weight spackling paste that is the consistency of thick pudding. I apply it with my fingertip and wipe any excess with a damp paper towel then go over it with sandpaper when dry.

Going up and down this ladder worked wonders for all the Holiday Goodies I indulged in!

Use primer first if painting bare wood. When laying down painter's tape, burnish the edges to seal any paint from leaking under it. I found removing the tape carefully just after the last coat sets up keeps the paint from peeling off. I then use a damp paper towel to remove any stray paint. I completely changed a home of mine from dark stained wood work to painted white wood, so write from experience!

This is the second of the three coats of paint it took to finish the crown moulding.

As a child I fondly remember Christmas as a time being spent with family and welcoming friends. I’m one of seven children, so there was an abundance of fun and activity growing up in my household. Funny, but we didn’t seem large at the time, because there was a family of twelve children across the street. Since that was my frame of reference in comparison we seemed rather small!
Growing up I felt blessed, because I had the love of family and a beautiful house to call home. My parents made all the holidays wonderful, but Christmas was the pièce de résistance. Living in Colorado meant ice skating, sledding and skiing chased with a crackling fire and hot chocolate.
I lived in a close knit neighborhood with many children and knew most everyone around. Christmas Eve was special, and made even more so, because of the kindness of a generous neighbor Mr. Rapp, the father of twelve. For many years he dressed up in a magnificent Santa suit, accompanied by some of his children costumed as elves. They had the tradition of visiting each home on our block with children. This was a much anticipated event, and the little ones anxiously watched for Santa’s arrival with their noses pressed against their front windows. Santa and his entourage came with much pomp and circumstance. He played the part perfectly with a hearty Ho, Ho, Ho, and silver bells jangling. He brought with him two large impressive leather bound black books. One was a “Good Book” and the other a “Bad Book”. After a lighthearted review of whether we ate our vegetables and did our homework we were allowed to record our name in the “Good Book” for prosperity's sake!

Ginger Cream Cookies

This makes about 4 dozen cookies, but I usually triple this recipe.

1/4 cup shortening –Crisco is fine
½ cup sugar
1 egg
½ cup molasses. I use Brer Rabbit Molasses dark (green label)
½ cup water
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. ginger ½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp salt ¼ tsp. cloves
½ tsp baking soda ½ tsp cinnamon

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, egg, molasses and water. Blend in the dry ingredients after you have mixed them. Cover and chill at least one hour.
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Drop dough by teaspoonfuls 2 inches apart onto a baking sheet that has been sprayed with Pam. Bake 8 minutes or until almost no imprint remains when touched with finger. Immediately remove from baking sheet; cool on racks.
Frost with the following icing.
Melt 1 stick of butter in a medium sauce pan, stir in 1 pound powdered sugar, thin if needed with milk or cream if frosting is too thick to spread easily. Heat it on low heat, it should spread very easily, but not run. Sprinkle with red and green colored immediately after frosting each cookie, before the frosting sets up.

I was in my garage looking for a lost earring, when I ran across an old American Flyer red sled and a pair of ice skates. I thought hum, this will do nicely! I went inside, and found my stash of holiday goodies to dress it up. I made a swag by adding a bit of greenery, tied a sassy bow, and threw in two over sized pine cones. VOILA, magically it was transformed into Outdoor Christmas Décor!

I used paper wrapping ribbon to tie the greenery and bow to the sled. Above is the back side view.

Two different colored ribbons were used for this project, Since I assembled my sled previously, I created a second swag to demonstrate how I made it.

These scissors from the Dollar Store are worth every penny!

Cut two pieces of garland and double them up. Place on top of each other to make one full piece. I simply twisted them together to hold them in place.

Create the bows...simple for those who already know how, but for those that don't here are a few instructions. Tip: Use wire ribbon, because it holds it's shape.

Start by making a loop.

Twist the ribbon around so the finish side ends up on top. Keep repeating this until you have as many loops as you need.

Make each layer of the loops larger as you go along.

When finished, tie the bow with a piece of ribbon, and keep the ends long.
Make a second bow in a different color, then sandwich the two together.

Tie the bow to the garland with a knot in back.

Flip the garland over, shape, fluff and fan out the bows. I added bells for interest. On my sled I added pine cones. To attach the pine cones I used paper ribbon and threaded it under the pine cone's scales, then attached it to the garland.

Since I now have two swags, this one will look nice hanging from a door, but I sure wish that missing earring would turn up!

Easy Christmas Arrangement Idea!

If you're looking for a festive centerpiece this is an easy project! I used items found in my Christmas stash, but even if purchased new they are inexpensive. An acrylic angel is the focal point for this arrangement, but any seasonal piece would work such as a nutcracker. You can easily adjust the colors for your home.

Tip: When making a centerpiece be sure it looks good from all sides.

This arrangement is sized for my coffee table, but the measurements can easily be adjusted smaller or larger to fit your space!

I will be adding other items to complete my coffee table, but I wanted you to have a clear idea what this finished arrangement looked like first!

To create the base of the arrangement, I started with a 60” piece of artificial garland. It was folded over to make a teardrop shape. Inexpensive green paper wrapping ribbon was used on the back side. The evergreen was tied in a few places with the ribbon, so it stays securely together.

Shape and fluff the evergreen to make it look full!

Here is a close up of the 11 1/2 " acrylic angel used as the focal point. It needed to be low enough that it didn't interfere with watching TV in the room.

Supplies

Three glass candle holders and white candles.

Decorative wire ribbon

Silver bead string (80")

Floral picks (toothpicks can work also!)

Floral tape

Inexpensive green paper wrapping ribbon

Scissors

Tip: If making a larger arrangement add more candles and bows.

Looking directly down you can see how the items were placed. Flatten the evergreen in areas the candle holders are placed. Make sure they are level, and clear away the evergreen, so there is not a fire hazard.

Place the silver string of beads so they follow the teardrop shape. Place them close to the edge, but set in a little bit.

Cut the ribbon in 15” lengths to make the bow picks.

Fold the ribbon in half to create a bow, and gather the end. Attach the bow to a wire floral pick. For a neat appearance wrap the stem with floral tape.

Substitute a toothpick if you don’t have floral picks on hand. Use regular tape to secure the bow and toothpick together. Finish by wrapping the seam in green paper wrapping ribbon.

Place the bow picks around the evergreen, making sure the picks are hidden. Keep them away from the candles, so you don't have a fire hazard.

The decorating holiday magazines are in the stores now, featuring gorgeous Christmas rooms. However, I’ve noticed most are completed spaces, without instructions how to develop a similar look for your home. I write my blog for the person interested in creating their own Stylish House, but could use some helpful hints, techniques and a dash of inspiration along the way. I’m in the process of decorating my home for the season, and if you would like to follow along I will be writing tutorials how I achieve different looks as I complete them. I’m having company for Christmas and will be hosting an open house, so will be doing major decorating this year. It will be the most season design I've done since I put my villa on the Dubai Christmas Home Tour. I'm starting with my white family room. You can change the colors to work with your rooms, but use the techniques I show to create your own version of this evergreen mantle swag.

This swag is secured in two places on each side of the mantle. It needs to stays on good and tight so it doesn't fall down. I discuss mounting ideas a few photos down. The dropped swag is created naturally by the weight of the garland. Here is a close up detail of the swag and bow, to understand exactly what this project looks like.

My swag lies in front of the urn. I did this so the visual line of the garland is not broken up, and looks more graceful and flowing. I played around with the length of the swag drop until it looked right. I didn't want it to interfere with the fire below, and wanted to have an area on each side to hang stockings from. I also have the garland hanging vertically beyond the bow. However, you could end it at the bow if you prefer. As a general rule of thumb, the larger the fireplace, the larger the garland should be. It needs to be scaled correctly, so it doesn't look skimpy. One way to check for scale is to stand in the entrance of the room and look at the fireplace from a distance, not up close. This way you see the big picture of the room as a whole.

Christmas Mantle Swag Materials

Ribbon: I prefer ribbon with wire on each side, because it can be shaped, and the wire gives it body. I look for ribbon that looks good from both sides. I save bows and ribbons from year to year, so I don't have to purchase new.

Evergreen: I use plain evergreen that doesn't have lights built in. I prefer to add my own lights, because with pre-wire, the bulbs can be changed out, but if the wire has a problem it usually can't be repaired. Either is fine, this is just my preference.

Lights: Mine are clear miniature "fairy" lights, just be sure to use a green wire so it blends into the evergreen. If you don't have an electrical plug near, use lights that operate on batteries.

Mounting Products

Here are products you can use to mount your garland to the mantle. I chose plastic suction cup hooks. I like them, because they can be reused from year to year, and do a good job holding the weight of the garland in place.

The 3m Command Hooks are for one use, and don't mar the wood. Mounting tape works for some applications, but it's not as secure. However, it comes in handy when a bow needs to be secured in a few places to make it look fuller and hang right.

I try not to put holes into mantles, but if I have to I use a small finishing nail, and place it where it does the least amount of damage.

Other Handy Helpers

Zip ties and green ribbon comes in handy when attaching the garlands together. I've used green ribbon for years, because it blends with the garland and is inexpensive. I also usually have it on hand so it's convenient.

I raised the urns up, because when I added the garland, they looked a bit dwarfed and lost their presence. I used several unused exercise videos (After New Year they will be put to good use, I promise ha, ha!) as a base. I made sure the urns on each side were level so they were equal height. These types of projects are organic in nature, and its common to improvise as you go along. Often you have to "tweak" things a bit, don't be afraid to try different things. I was careful to place the urns on something secure, because I don't want them tipping over and breaking!

With the urns raised, I added evergreen garland, mounted with suction cup hooks on each side of the mantle for the base. I played around with the length of the drop until it looked right. It didn't want it to interfere with the fire and there is enough room on the ends to add Christmas stockings. I then fluffed and shaped the evergreen to make it look full and more natural. You could use real evergreen, but I used artificial here.

I then added white floral garland on top of the evergreen base. I used green ribbon to tie the two layers together in a few places. I shaped the flowers and made sure they were pointing outward.

Clear "fairy" lights on green wire is tucked into the garland to hide it.

Bow Detail

The bow was mounted to a piece of the evergreen tied with ribbon.

Tip: Look for wire ribbon that looks nice on both sides!

I threaded gold ribbon through the length of the swag, and played around with it until it flowed nicely. I tucked the loose ends under the evergreen to hide them. I shaped the flowers and stems to give them a more natural and fuller appearance.

I chose this elegant yet simple reindeer for the centerpiece of the mantle. It's what I had on hand, and it doesn't interfere with the picture above. My family room has clean lines and this seemed to fit with the style. I may end up changing it if I run across something better as I unpack some more boxes, but it works for now.

The Finished Product

I'm not a florist, but took floral classes as part of my design program. There is probably a professional way to do this, but this worked for me and was easy. I would love to hear if you try your own version of this!

Enchanted Makeovers ~Just Finished!

Myriam House was completed Sunday afternoon!

I’ve spent several rewarding weekends along with many other volunteers transforming Myriam House at Vista Maria's shelter for girls. This was the latest project of the non profit organization Enchanted Makeovers, which is run by the wonderful Terry Grahl! The makeover included the central hallway, and eleven bedrooms for the twenty girls who live there. The girls range in age from 11 to 17 years old.

This was a makeover made possible by many helping hands.

Myriam House is one of many housing units at Vista Maria that provides a safe haven and guidance to young women. What makes Myriam special is the girls earn the privilege to reside here and enjoy more freedoms.

Paint brushes were flowing for this makeover on walls, beds, chests and chairs . There were also lots and lots of POLKA DOTS!

Luckily, Michigan has been having a warm autumn, so some work could be completed outside.

This was taken the first day I arrived on the site. It's amazing how a fresh coat of sunny yellow paint transforms dull green walls.

It was fun to watch the muralists work their creative magic! The main hallway was filled with fairies, and became a floral fantasy.

The doors sprouted into trees with porthole windows.

The girls stayed in another part of the building while we worked. Occasionally I would run into a girl, and heard more then once "thank you for helping us". It was touching how appreciative these young ladies were. Most of them come from a less then ideal home life, but Vista Maria allows them the opportunity to receive an education and counseling. They try to place them in good foster homes when possible.

Each bed was supplied with a new mattress pad, pillow, sheets and quilt!

The pillows cases were thoughtfully embroidered with Ask, Believe, Receive.

Vista Maria provides food, education, shelter, counseling and spiritual guidance. Enchanted Makeovers provides a transformation that would never have been possible.

A volunteer made the jewelry boxes on top of each dresser.

The plaid on this rocking chair was cleverly painted by a volunteer.

These two amazing women drove all the way from Iowa to bring hope chests, and jewelry boxes built by Kim's father! Kim is sitting on one of the chests. She also happens to be the founder of Modern B*a*g Ladies.

Another woman drove from Minnesota with handmade quilts for each girl! I could kick myself for not taking a photo, but trust me they were beautiful.

Each room had a different inspirational plaque along with fabric memory boards.

Handmade dolls and kittens made by volunteers were placed on each bed.

Teamwork!

Irma is part of Girls, Grapes, and Giving, which generously donated many items!

The girl's are taught to crochet, and baskets filled with hooks and yarn were donated!

Each room had a sink area where these cute plaques and towels were placed. The girl were provided with slippers and a bathrobe.

At the end of the day we were allowed to be present when the girls were shown their rooms for the first time. It was touching to see the girls reactions, they were so surprised and excited. There were many hugs, and I don't think there was a dry eye in the place.

Mirrored Closet Door Makeover!

A great look and easy on the pocketbook!

I'm always on the lookout for easy and inexpensive ideas that appear high end. Last year I spotted this photo running on HGTV's Rate My Space, and immediately added it to my idea file. The young man who ran the space said he transformed these mirrored closet doors using frosted window film. I've seen this product sold in rolls at Home Depot and Lowe's for around $19.00.

Tip:

Window film can be cut with scissors, but I suggest using a straight edge, rotary cutter and mat to create sharp, clean edges for a professional look. If you're not familiar with rotary cutters I highly recommend them. I use mine frequently and they are worth the investment!

Mirrored closet doors can easily be updated.

Some window films applications look amateur, so be selective how and where you use them. On the plus side they are easy to apply, are affordable and can be cleaned. However, children could pull it off so that should be a consideration.

Window film for an easy fix:

I'm currently working on a client's master bathroom remodel that has a problematic bathtub window. It overlooks their neighbor's patio, which creates a peek-a-boo situation. They recently purchased their home, and the bathroom came with an expensive window treatment that looks great so they kept it. However, it didn't address the privacy issue so wasn't functional. I suggested using a decorative window film solution, which easily corrected the problem with minimal cost.

Blue Souk

I discovered the Blue Souk when I lived in Dubai. It was located about 45 minutes from my villa in the neighboring Emirate called Sharjah. The traffic was always a problem so the trip usually took much longer, but I started early in the day which helped beat the mad rush.

The word souk refers to an old world style market and this one was huge! There were many souks around Dubai I enjoyed visiting. Some of my favorites were the gold, camel, garden, spice, and fabric souks. The Blue Souk in Sharjah was a bit of a trip, but worth the effort. It was similar to a mall rather then the usual cluster of individual shops. Like most souks they closed for several hours in the afternoon for a long lunch. I usually did my shopping early to avoid the crowds, but the souks magically came to life in the evening. That is when the locals ventured out wearing their abayas and dishdashas and flashing their 24 carat gold jewelry.

When I started on this great adventure I didn't expect I would practice interior design here. However, when the opportunities came my way I took advantage of them. I often had to go off the beaten path to find what I needed. It was quite a learning experience and often felt a bit like a scavenger hunt!

This part of the world tends to be a night society, because of the oppressive heat and humidity during many months of the year. It was only recently that air-conditioning was made widely available, so the custom is still deeply ingrained. It was strange seeing small children playing outside late at night, but that is the local way. It also seemed odd that restaurants didn't get busy until after 10:00 pm, and you were never hurried. At the end of the evening you had to ask for the bill.

Here is a map of the region, so you can get a feel for the area. I'd never heard of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before moving to Dubai, but it turned out to be a wonderful experience.

Dubai is western friendly and comfortable for an American to visit and live there. It's very different in many ways and took some getting used to, but I loved living in Dubai. Sharjah is a different Emirate and is more conservative. I found it difficult to drive in Sharjah because the signs were mostly in Arabic, and I spent a majority of my time being lost. Yes, I could drive, and I did not have to wear a veil!

During my time living in Dubai the newspaper announced Sharjah was implementing a Decency Law, which anyone visiting had to follow. If you’re interested you can read about the Decency Law HERE. Basically, I respected the country I was a guest in so I dressed modestly anyway.

Once you arrive at the Blue Souk you're in for a rare treat! It's jam packed with everything imaginable under the sun from this region of the world. The prices are negotiable and bargaining is considered normal and is expected. I was very good at this since I was already a garage sale connoisseur!

I had several good bargaining phrases I used including these:

I'm your lucky first customer so you must give me your very best price!

I'm not a tourist, I live here so give me best pricing!

I can bring my friends if you give me your best price!

Rosewood is beautiful, and there are different qualities and varieties. Indian Rosewood is commonly imported into this region as furniture. If it's not treated properly it will dry out and split, which causes major problems. I was fortunate to find a place that carried excellent raw rosewood pieces, which could be custom stained. I bought a beautiful fully carved Pakistan screen that weighs a ton. I made the deal with the shop owner and picked out the stain. A week later I returned to check the color, and the man I dealt with looked at me puzzled like he never met me before. It was very odd until his twin brother poked his head out of the office and warmly greeted me in English!

I loved these graceful Arabic coffee pots, and bought myself one which I keep in my home office. The coffee pot is a sign of hospitality in the Arab world similar to the pineapple motif found in New England.

The Blue Souk has a wonderful store called Sheba where you can purchase a Persian Carpet in style. It's quite an adventure and you are treated royally. The carpets are laid out in front of you, and if they don't have a suitable one in the store they send a runner to their storeroom for more! I bought several carpets during my time in Dubai from a variety of sources, but the carpet traders at the Blue Souk were my favorite. When my sister came to visit from the States, I took her here, and she said it was one of the biggest thrills of her life. She really got a kick out of the ceremony around purchasing a carpet. When you are ready to leave, they carry your carpet on their head wearing their long gowns to your vehicle, along with your other packages. It is quite a sight to see!

Purchasing a carpet is considered a big event and you're given a comfortable place to sit and offered drinks served on a tray while you select your purchase. It would be considered rude if you did not accept this gracious hospitality. When you have had your fill of coffee you shake your cup to signal you are finished.

This is yours truly, standing in the courtyard of a historical villa near the Blue Souk. How ironic that the women who used to live here rarely ventured beyond the high walls to go shopping. Goods and services were brought to them, because they lived a cloistered existence.

Enchanted Makeovers

Enchanted Makeovers is the non profit organization run by Terry Grahl, who is currently making over the young woman's shelter at Vista Maria.

My husband and I have been playing a small part in joining Terry and countless other volunteers on this project. We've been painting and doing the tasks needed to create this magical transformation. Terry is turning a bleak shelter into a place of hope and happiness and touching the lives of many young women. I am so impressed with Terry and her vision, she is truly a treasure. We are nearing the finish line, but there is still much work to be done. I need to scoot and get to Vista Maria, but wanted to spread the word about the good work Enchanted Makeovers is doing. Ann Arbor, Michigan is a fun place to spend an afternoon. It’s a town filled with chic restaurants and interesting shops with a generous sprinkling of colorful Bohemian flavor. Recently I was enjoying lunch at a tea room when I spotted my first fairy door! I’d never seen anything like it before and it sparked my imagination. I learned there are several fairy doors placed both outside and inside many of the shops and buildings in the town. However, you must keep a sharp eye to find them. These handmade fairy doors come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but these miniatures are often placed low to the ground. These quirky little gems are just the perfect height for viewing by children and the young at heart.

Red Shoes

A local artist Jonathan B. Wright started this trend after he discovered a mysterious fairy door while doing renovations on his 100 year old home. After the story of his fascinating find became public, fairy doors started appearing around town. This whimsical idea has continued to spread and more are popping up all the time! Often on the door’s threshold people leave small offerings of candy, trinkets and bits of change. There is an interesting short film clip you can view HERE narrated by the artist who gives further background about his discovery.

I love this rich and striking aquamarine color used on Tiffany's gift boxes. I've become accustomed to seeing them often the past few years, but I don't own a single piece. However, several of their vibrant boxes mysteriously keep appearing in my daughter's possession. They have a way of popping up around birthdays and holidays. I remember once waiting in a long line to exchange a duplicate item!
This vibrant hue makes a strong design statement and packs a big punch. If doing an entire room seems a bit to much, consider a toned down version or introducing an accent piece.

I attended an interesting seminar recently at the Michigan Design Center. The speaker was Jackie Jordan, Director of Color Marketing for Sherwin Williams. She presented the Sherwin Williams - 2010 colormix forecast, explained what it was based on, and how it was developed by their international team. Sherwin Williams also collaborated with Robert Allen to create lines of coordinating paint colors and textiles. The end result is their paint colors and textiles are seamlessly integrated for these new palettes.
There are four new Sherwin William color palettes, but I was especially drawn to one called Treasured, which I thought others might also find of interest. The colors are soothing, and the ideas behind them resonated with my sensibility. You can visit Sherwin Williams to view the others.

On a side note: I'm always interested in getting your ideas and impressions. I keep informed and current, but decide for myself whether I like a trend or not. I'm sure at times you also look at something in a magazine and think you have got to be kidding! I'm referring in general terms not in reference to these new palettes.

Sherwin Williams -Treasured 2010 palette

The Treasured palette is based on getting away from a throw away society. It has the look of artisan made pieces, flea market finds, and welcomes imperfections that create a rich character. Its about chippy paint, repurposing items, and turning something headed to the trash into a treasure!

Sherwin Williams introduced a new hue called Caribbean Coral, based on a retro feel. Coral has been absent from the design scene for many years due to the backlash of the overused 80's fuggly blue and peach combination.

Shhh, here is a little secret... there was talk about wallpaper making a come back. Those supposedly in the know say graphics and flocks are predicted.

There are many interesting details in this repurposed hutch. The use of chalk board paint is trendy. It helps keep the piece loose, but the overall look is not messy. The creamy fabric insert gathered at the top and bottom of each opening creates soft structure without being stiff and formal.

Restoration Hardware

After my seminar, I scooted over to see what's the latest trends were at Restoration Hardware. They are definitely showcasing printed burlap pillows. You can't miss them, because they are displayed front and center when you enter their store. They have also introduced more furniture in the repurposed style, like this coffee table that looks like a cart or wagon. I checked their paint area and there is nothing new, but maybe something is brewing for the future.

Schub Laden

I believe we'll see more clever ways to repurposed drawers in the future. Instead of an entire dresser being thrown out, the drawers are being salvaged. Schub Laden is a Dutch company, which does innovated designs in a retro ~ vintage style.

This vintage luggage has wonderful texture, creating the feel of being time worn and well travelled. I've had my eyes open for awhile, waiting to find just the right suitcases. I think they would make an interesting side table.

When a home is going to be torn down, salvaging interesting architectural items is a way to preserve craftsmanship that is no longer available. It is also kinder to our environment.

Often you can buy wonderful items at affordable prices at salvage warehouses, They are definitely worth a look. I shop everywhere, hey I like some of Kirkland's pieces, but to find something unique that is not cookie cutter mass produced has great appeal! For my personal spaces I prefer collecting interesting pieces over time.

The Country French kitchen conjures up images of gathering around a rustic table to enjoy a meal with family and friends. It's being surrounded by copper pots, wrought iron fixtures, earthy terracotta tile, farm house sinks and at the center a magnificent stove!

Rustic shutters create drama and can easily be added to a modern home for a bit of old world charm. They bring an architectural element into the space, and the wrought iron hinges adds an authentic touch.

Better Homes & Gardens Kitchens

This luxurious American interpretation of a French kitchen is stunning, and what it lacks in authenticity makes up for in functionality. The overhead ventilation system cleverly mimics a French plaster hooded fireplace. The use of a wrought iron light fixture is fitting. Overhead cabinets that vary in height adds interest and movement. The center island is a different color, and the curved granite countertop is supported by typically French style corbels.

Old world kitchens are undeniably special and visually wonderful, but often are missing a proper work triangle and adequate storage. Anyone who cooks frequently can appreciate the trade off between modern conveniences and the romantic ideal of a period kitchen. When it comes to understanding work triangles, landing spaces and prep areas, from experience, I suspect no country has studied kitchens as in depth as Americans. Ideally, the period charm that is so appealing can be gracefully incorporated to fit a modern lifestyle.

Provence Home

For these period home examples I found properties currently for sale in Provence. Notice the heavy overhead beams and thick plaster walls. In some areas the stones are actually peeking through. There is high open shelving filled with yellow glazed earthenware vessels. To the side is a french door, notice how deep the inset window is on the far right. It's hard to miss the huge black stove. There is not much counter space, especially on the right side, it looks great, but might be a bit awkward when you need to put a heavy pot down. It may not be perfectly laid out, but it has so much character and is such a charming kitchen!

Better Homes & Gardens Kitchens

This American kitchen has an impressive dual fuel range from AGA as it's focal point. It imparts old world style with modern amenities. There is an overhead ventilation system tucked under the curved panel, which is not present in any of the period kitchens shown. I would love to own a stove such as this, but until that day comes I can have a pretty piece of pottery filled with wooden spoons like the one that sits next to the stove.

Provence Home

This cheery Provence kitchen has several affordable items that could be used to add some French flavor into your home. The colorful tablecloth is typical of the region along with open shelving for dishes and hanging copper pots.

These stylized Provencal French cotton fabrics are filled with vivid blues, sunny yellows, striking reds and shades of greens. These lovely patterns contain squares, stripes and ovals, olives, lemons and an assortment of flowers.

This would be an easy look to recreate. Herbs in terracotta containers sitting on a wicker base. Even if you don't have a terracotta floor you can bring in the feel of it into your space.

On my way to Trader Joe's to buy their their Orange Chicken that I love. I stopped at a garage sale on a whim, and found this gem. I didn't win the lotto this week, but I felt lucky scoring this vintage Paris book. It was printed a few years before WW II and shows a slice of Parisian life in these wonderful black and white photos. I adore old books like this one that captures a glimpse into another era.

I almost forgot the book was the grand sum of one quarter.

My Philosophy ~ What is yours?

It’s important to discover your own voice and create a home that functions for you and your family’s lifestyle. Design evolves and looks cycle in and out of fashion, but if you develop a self confidence and find a style that is uniquely your own, and it’s done well, you won’t fall into the trap of being a slave of chasing after the latest fad. In some circles, unless you have the popular cookie cutter look or (uniform as I call it) you are not considered chic and stylish. Constant comparisons to others drains you of your personal power, but if you express yourself genuinely you will find a lasting satisfaction.

I never discount what is available to make a great space and remix things in a new and fresh way. I keep current and updated, but I want to be original, and follow my own path. I do this by incorporating what I enjoy and like and not what the mass media tells me I should be doing. Design is subjective and everyone can be a critic, but there are established principals of good design. They include balance, scale and proportion and if you follow these basic tools whatever your style you can create a fantastic home that has your own personal stamp on it.

Tiebacks like wallpaper and color schemes, ebb and flow in and out of style. Regardless if you're a fan or not they are still around in abundance.

Tiebacks have been around for a long time and I expect they will always be here in some shape or form. They can serve a useful function or simply be a decorative accessory by adding visual interest. Some are upscale and elegant while others are whimsical and fun or clean line and modern.

Great Britain has some wonderful selections.

On the practical side they hold back bulky drapery, letting more light shine into a room. They are particularily useful for holding open fixed curtains. When tiebacks are used, generally the drapery is not mean to be opened and closed, because tiebacks tend to leave wrinkles in the drapery.

So where do you exactly place a tieback?

There are no hard or fast rules. The placement depends on the style of window and the drapery. However, as a rule of thumb, the base of the tieback should be positioned two thirds of the way down the window. This does not mean the hook itself should be placed at this point. Sometimes the hook will go much higher especially with rope tiebacks.
