It’s almost time for someone to be crowned the new NFL champion, as Superbowl XLVI is right around the corner.

You sat on the edge of your couches all season long, hoping that your team will be there, in the final match. For most of you, that dream was crushed long ago, some of you just lived that deception these last two weeks as the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals,  Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos were eliminated in the playoffs.

Every single one of these teams had the talent and a very big chance in making it to the Superbowl but losses like the Packers to the Giants and the Saints to the 49ers were just unfortunate.

The Packers came out of a championship year at full throttle knocking their opponents completely out of their path. Aaron Rodgers completed pass after pass and scored 45 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions and let’s not forget the receivers who only dropped and/or fumbled the ball about 2% of the time. The Green Bay Packers were picked to win the Superbowl again.

The New Orleans Saints, as usual, stumbled in the beginning losing in a shootout to the Packers in the opening game of the season. However, they bounced back and finished the regular season with an impressive 13-3. Drew Brees completed 71% of his total passes and threw for an average of 335 yards per game, he also had 46 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, and set 6 different NFL records.

Tom Brady and The Patriots are playing at their highest level once again, Brady’s front five has protected him to the maximum, which allowed him to throw for more yards this season (5,235 yards) than any of his previous seasons. He is definitely the reason why they were so successful in 2011. But let’s not forget his offensive squad, Wes Welker, Deion Branch, Aaron Hernandez and Ron Gronkowski who combined for a little over 4,500 receiving yards.

That being said, Ray Lewis and The Baltimore Ravens are hungry for a second Superbowl ring but they’ve got their hands full with the almost perfect protection that Tom Brady has. Last week versus the Broncos, Brady was only hit twice in about 34 pass attempts; however, the Ravens defense is much more aggressive than the Broncos and they have had a lot of success getting to Brady in the past. If they use outside linebacker Terrel Suggs the way they always have, the Ravens will for sure limit the Patriots offense to short runs and passes.

Eli Manning and The New York Giants are on a roll as they have won their last four games with a very big exclamation point. Their latest milestone was beating the almost unbeaten Green Bay Packers in their house. The defense came out big and put a stop to incredible Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers had an average passer rating of 122.5 before his last meeting against The Giants in the postseason, which kept his passer rating below 79 in that same game.

Jim Harbaugh was named the 18th Head coach of The San Francisco 49ers history in January of 2011. He has orchestrated a very impressive defense and that’s how they have been winning games. Although Alex Smith had a very good show of skills and heart against Drew Brees and The Saints last week in the postseason, it was mostly the defense that guaranteed that win.

At the end, there can be only one. So who is it going to be?

Nowadays mobile devices come more often then ever before but they go just as rapidly. Apple seems to have the upper hand on everything mobile worldwide, however that may change.

Industrial Designer and inventor of the M-PAD, Volker Hübner, has designed what is called the Ultimate Tablet PC. With designers and developers alike in mind, this tablet promises to help folks accomplish their tasks more efficiently. The M-pad would boast a big 15.6-inch OLED display, two programmable buttons with e-ink displays and nine fixed buttons. He intends to make available 24 shortcuts, which will be programmable for each individual application.

I am probably one of the biggest Apple fans out there, and just like Steve Jobs won me over, the same applies to everyone who uses Apple products everyday of their lives. It’s the simplicity of the device and yet the pioneering of new technologies that has made Apple what Apple is today. And even in times where Apple was criticized for minor software bugs or hardware failures, their competition couldn’t even catch up. That’s the confidence they have in their products.

If you’re going to even try to compete with Apple in today’s world, you have to think way outside the box.

Every once in a while, I come across tweaks or hacks that give me goose-bumps! This time I found a hack so incredible it’ll blow your mind.

Macro photography is a close-up photography of usually very small subjects. Welcome to the world of Brian Valentine “LordV”.

About LordV

He is an early retired PhD Microbiologist living in Worthing South Coast UK. Retirement enabled him to re-kindle his interest in photography combined with affordable digital SLRs.

Bought his first DSLR in Dec 2004- a canon 300D together with a sigma 105mm Ex macro lens. He has since expanded this with a Canon 20D and the king of macro lenses, a canon MPE-65. LordV has been able in those two years to learn quite a lot about the practical aspects of macro-photography which is his main photographic interest, and also enjoy making bits for the camera rigs where he can. The DIY parts have tended to be modified flash brackets, flash diffusers (his current one is made from two coke cans) and bits to stick lenses together.

Virtually all the shots he takes are in his garden, He’s a keen gardener and as he also keeps pond fish (Koi). He has not used insecticide in his garden for many years. This has resulted in a little haven for insects which he loves watching and photographing.

The name LordV takes a little bit of explaining but he used to do a lot of internet PC forum stuff and wanted a name to show I was British, He’s also a Terry Pratchett Discworld book fan and much admire the character Lord Vetinari. So he used that as his Nickname.

Hello and welcome, this is a quick tutorial on how I created my poster concept for the World Collabs 4 competition. The tricky thing about planning a tutorial like this is, I created the elements with the 3D shapes from Joao Oliveira.

As a quick intro to this read, A World Collabs poster begins with one designer supplying some elements and the second designer adding to those elements to create a completed poster. My goal was to use the elements supplied by the collaborator as much as possible in creating my piece. For these steps, all I did was take the shapes, expand and rotate them to start forming my robot and it’s environment. Later I pasted a robotic eye that I created for a previous project. A link to a separate tutorial detailing how I made the robotic eye can be found at the bottom of this page.

Robot Face

I started by trying to frame the environment for the face to hover in. I flipped the shapes around to create what I called a rubber-room effect on the sides. Then I just started layering shapes one at a time until the robot started to take shape.

The world was shocked by the devastation in Japan after a massive earthquake and tsunami spawned a nuclear crisis. This tutorial is brought to you by Tiago Castro who designed this poster in honor of those who died and others who are still fighting for survival. The earthquake, the cause of the tragedy in Japan, will be the focus of our concept.

What we’ll be creating

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop with the following settings.

Step 2

Fill the document with white and unlock the background layer by clicking twice on the layer. Add a Gradient Overlay layerstyle, Transparent White to Black.

Step 3

Download this texture and import it to your document. Scale it to fit whole image. Change the Blending Mode to Luminosity and down the opacity to 20%.

Step 4

Now we need to simulate the earthquake that will be behind the World image. Download the Crack texture and position it like is shown bellow.

Step 5

Change the Blending Mode to Luminosity. Rasterize the layer and apply a Levels Adjustment by pressing CMD (control) + L. Then, with the Gradient tool, add a layermask hide everything except the crack.

Step 6

To add the World you need to download this image. Place the image in the document, rasterize it and delete the white area by grabbing the Magic Wand tool (with option Contiguous unchecked and Tolerance to zero), selecting the white area and pressing delete.

Deselect it and press V to move the layer a slightly upward. Change the Blend Mode to Luminosity.

Step 7

Add a Drop Shadow and a Color Overlay to the image.

Step 8

Our crack texture has not the contrast enough so, let’s add a little more contrast till you are satisfied.

We are done!
