Wi-BUS™ - Mass transportation for the digital public

Internet usage grew more than 165% from 2000 to 2008, but about 88 percent of the world’s 6.6 billion people still do not have access to the Internet.* The prohibitive costs of cable, fiber and copper line extensions make the Internet inaccessible to most of the world.

Wi-BUS™ is the solution.

Why Wi-BUS™?

Wi-BUS™, developed by La Jolla Networks, Inc., is a breakthrough, disruptive technology that presents an unmatched opportunity in the broadband space.

Wi-BUS™ technology creates an efficient pathway that is broader and faster than any competing technology — WiFi, WiMAX, or 802.20 — and provides a completely scalable technology using existing infrastructure.

How? By unlocking the use of UHF channels (frequencies) for effective delivery of digital data to homes and businesses (e.g., telephony, Internet, interactive voice, TV). Wi-BUS™ (meaning Wireless Broadband UHF Spectrum) is 10 times faster and a fraction of the cost of what is presently typically offered to consumers and businesses.

Wi-BUS™ not only supports the delivery of general-purpose data to fixed home equipment, it can also be used to support mobile phones, laptops and other applications. Thus, La Jolla Networks has the opportunity to adapt its offerings to networks employing one or a number of media, and to any number of network applications.

* Internet usage and world population statistics are from the US Census Bureau, Nielsen//NetRatings, and the International Telecommunications Union and Internet World Stats.

Today a Bangladeshi MP (Member of Parliament) raised his voice on parliament to implement this Wi-BUS technology in Bangladesh, so that internet can be provided to the people of rural areas around the country in a very low cost (Specially for villagers).

I personally think that its a good thing but still it depends on internet bandwidth price in Bangladesh. Currently 1mbps bandwidth price in Bangladesh is BDT 27,000 /month (approx $385USD) such a high rate.

Whats do you guys think about this technology? Please Share your thought

Orascom Telecom’s CEO Naguib Sawiris has told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Jordan that the Egyptian group is looking at the possibility of merging its Bangladeshi mobile unit Banglalink with rival GSM operator AKTEL. Banglalink is currently second placed in Bangladesh’s cellular market, ahead of AKTEL, which is controlled by Malaysia-based Axiata (formerly TM International [TMI]), which was spun off from Telekom Malaysia in April 2008. A merger would create a much closer rival to market leader GrameenPhone, which had 47% of the country’s mobile subscribers at the end of March 2009 according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database. Sawiris said there was a need for more consolidation in some international markets, because ‘long term the smaller companies won’t be able to compete,’ and announced that Orascom was ‘in discussions now with Telekom Malaysia [sic] meaning to combine our operations.’ Sawiris also said he did not see many expansion opportunities at this stage but was keeping an eye on Cuba.

If you’re just getting started or your web site doesn’t take up too much traffic just yet, then a shared webhost may be all you need.

The only problem is, not all shared hosting is created the same.

The Problems With Shared Hosting

You may think about a shared hosting server like a big house. Every customer who purchases an account gets access to some space inside the house but everyone has to share the dining room, kitchen and even washroom.

If for one reason or another someone in the house decides to use the washroom for 3 hours, the other house members may have difficulties in getting the right share of resources.

Hosting companies usually have policies to protect accounts, but none of them are strict rules. In other words, if they don’t do a good job in managing the problem, you end up with something that is less reliable than you expect for your business.

Shared hosting companies also tend to oversell. If only two accounts use as much space and data transfer as promised by the provider, they are more likely to render the server busy enough to serve pages from other accounts. Basically, their offering is based on the fact that only a few web sites have really high traffic so while the server is idle most of the time, the resource is shared among other users.

Of course, the problem comes when a few sites suddenly process a lot of data or get a bunch of visitors. One possible scenario is that some social sites like Digg or Slashdot features pages on their home page. As time progresses, web sites and blogs are going to get even more popular. Is your hosting company willing to migrate your account as necessary to avoid overloading the system?

Some of the above scenarios may not happen, but for serious business owners, they are not going to rely their businesses on such unreliable condition.

Is there a solution to this issue?

Yes, this is when Virtual Private Server (VPS) comes to the rescue. It doesn’t solve everything but at least it removes the limitations within shared hosting and give additional benefits at the same time.

To continue with the above analogy, a VPS server is much like an apartment. An apartment building has limited tenants in it. Basically all the tenants still use the same building, elevator, and other facilities but each of them stays in his or her own unit. They have privacy and much more flexibility.

Benefits of Using Virtual Private Server

Ideally, each of your sites should run on a dedicated server but alas, this is not possible due to its cost and other factors.

VPS is a great option to go as an alternative. The following are the benefits of using it in comparison to shared hosting.

Security. Each VPS account is insulated. It runs its own operating system. That means other VPS users who share the same server with you can’t possibly access data or files from your virtual server.

Performance. Resources are shared equally among accounts. Hosting companies usually allocate fewer users per server than in shared hosting packages to make it more responsive, performance wise.

Server reliability. If one VPS causes problem, the owner can reboot the individual VPS without affecting others. Network connection and other factors also contribute to site availability but still it is a relief especially for people who experience frequent down time with shared hosting caused by other users.

As configurable as a dedicated server. You can install or remove services as necessary to suit your need. If you like to install additional protection for email, you may do so without asking permission at all because it is basically your server. Sometimes this is the only option to go if you have to customize server software configuration without investing on a dedicated server.

Independent. Each Virtual Private Server (VPS) has its own IP addresses, so it appears as if you host your site under a dedicated server. This is possible because each virtual server runs its own operating system. You can pick your favorite Linux distribution, for example.

Scalable. With shared hosting, you can upgrade to a better and bigger package, but most likely what changes are the amount of disk space or data transfer (bandwidth) you could use. VPS is entirely different though. If you upgrade, you will have to move to another server with less crowded users. Modern VPS supports load balancing or failover technologies too, so you can add more servers to enhance performance and availability of your web site or blog.

The latter point deserves its own mention, so allow me to elaborate further.

How Scalable is VPS?

Virtual Private Server (VPS) is often thought as less desirable as Dedicated Server (DS). From the resource perspective, if everything stays the same then DS is certainly better than VPS. However, with existing technology, you can turn multiple VPS, which are hosted in different servers, to perform different functions and serve your site.

Even further, you can actually setup load balancing so the loads are evenly distributed across multiple VPSes.

If your web site has 100 requests per second, 50 of those requests go to server A and the other half go to server B. Web users may not see any difference at all. When one server is unavailable, another server can take over the processing load.

From this perspective, certainly VPS is better than DS, which is just one huge server by itself. Moreover, combinations of two or more VPSes can be even more cost effective than a dedicated server.

Another interesting usage of VPS is to distribute different service to its own VPS. A database may reside on a box and web server on another.

In the near future, cloud computing will combine the processing power of multiple servers and bring much more flexible offerings. Hosting buyers may soon buy as much resource as they require. This is certainly an interesting space to watch.

Note: Basically cloud computing is like VPS with a twist. With cloud hosting, the hosting companies allocate as much server resource as you need in a series of servers. The topic is out of the scope of this article though.

VPS Has Its Own Drawbacks

Let me be frank up front. VPS is being sold as being insulated from each other, with perfect resource allocation. Each account will get the fair amount of share and the capability to burst — use more server resources — if they are available / idle.

While it is true each account actually runs separately as a virtual machine, but that doesn’t mean the resource allocation is perfect. If one account decides to exploit the server resources aggressively, still the others will be affected.

As much as I like to compare it to an apartment, still VPS is just a virtual compartment so you should know it before buying. Picking a reputable company who monitors servers and your neighbors closely is necessary. You also want to make sure that they don’t oversell and cram too many users into one server.

Another drawback of running a VPS is that it is harder to maintain. If you purchase managed VPS, it will add to your overall cost.

One thing that may surprise some users is the fact that you have to pay if you want to manage your account with cPanel. That is an additional cost per month for each VPS. In shared hosting, the companies offering the service pay the license and share the cost among server users but in VPS you can’t share it with your neighbors.

How Will This Information Benefit Web and Blog Designers

First of all, as your site outgrows your shared hosting, VPS is often the next logical step to take. Nowadays as VPS becomes more affordable, rarely do I need to sign up with shared hosting for my web site. You may also propose this to your clients as part of your offering.

In early 2000 when I started a local Linux and email consulting service, my friend and I often referred businesses to each other. He was a web designer. More often than not, a client who was to build a new site needed infrastructure for hosting the site.

Shared hosting was a solution, but if the client wanted a more reliable service, that’s when my service could be of help. Some of my clients also asked me if I knew a local web designer that they could work with. I was more than happy to refer my friend in return. We had established a kind of partnership that way, although there’s no legal document that backed it up.

This idea certainly will work nowadays. Shared hosting is now a commodity, thanks to the same old pitch about better reliability, low cost, and faster servers.

With a bit of creativity, web and blog designers may re-package their offerings to include hosting. Buying a reseller package and reselling it may be an idea. In several offers, I’ve seen a reseller package that even includes unlimited support for the customers of the reseller. That may sound like a great package, but most likely you also need a staff to provide customer and billing support.

For that, I prefer another route, which is to package VPS from one of my trusted hosting companies as part of an integrated service. Not only this allows you to create a value-added service, but also the potential of recurring income of maintaining client’s site.

While web designing and infrastructure are two entirely different services, they often go hand in hand. Clients often ask about response time of the server to a web designer or developer because they think it has to do with the code or design, and vice versa. Yet another reason why an integrated service is an idea worth considering.

VPS usually offers a more reliable service, so that’s a truly a win-win situation.

The challenge is, of course, to find a good partner that will fill the gaps for your current service.

Conclusions

After some time, your blog or web site may demand a better and more reliable server. While it is possible to upgrade to a more powerful shared hosting package, VPS solution in my opinion is a better path to take.

If you are willing to learn a bit about server management, VPS gives you a much better environment to host your web sites. And unlike what most others believe, it doesn’t have to be costly too.

Reputable VPS solution starts as low as $20 per month (as of this writing).

Finally, packaging web / blog design and server maintenance is still mostly untapped value-added service. If you are looking to grow your business, even during recession, this option provides you with another way to stand out from your competitions. I’m not here to say that everyone should leave what has been working so far. The point is, reluctance to think out of the box may as well mean leaving money on the table.

Stay tuned for an upcoming article from me here on Pro Blog Design next Monday where I’ll give you some tips on getting the most out of your VPS setup!

Now, let’s start an interesting discussion about this. Have you considered switching to VPS? What’s your experience with it?

What’s your idea for value added web design services? Do you think this is a good model? Who knows, we can help each other make our businesses thrive this year.

Stunned to see the news against BTRC’s Chairman in BDNEWS24.com on 23rd January, 2009. I think reporters should think twice or thrice before they write about someone and his activities. There were several allegations against BTRC and their work relating IIG, IGW and WiMAX.

I should say a short history about the past and present BTRC. As a businessman of telecom industry and owner of a call center, I was related to BTRC for a long time not for the call centre but for other issues also. When BTRC was in Gulshan, I had to pay about 500.00 Tk. only to send my card to any director’s room. That BTRC is now open to everybody, even for the access to the Chairman. When I went to setu bhaban for a query about the Call Center Licensing, the staffs of BTRC just really teach me everything and gave more than 20 mins time, which was un-imaginable to me. They have shown their professionalism. I have got all the information and the risk factors which I didn’t get from a seminar of an Indian Company. Their style and cooperation was like a corporate service organization. This only can happen for this new regime of BTRC, where General Manzur leads it from the front.

As a businessman I was observing BTRC’s present activity and their new approaches to the telecom industry. One of the appreciable matters was ILDTS Policy 2007. Before the formulation of the policy all the long distance telephone calls were ruled by the state owned company BTCL. To reduce the illegal VoIP and increase the government revenue BTRC needs to do something. The Policy made it happened. Introduction of IGW in the private sector the grey market is reducing day by day. At present as a survey report each IGWs are getting more than 3-4 million minutes per day. For this government is earning a huge amount of revenue.

ICX made accountability to all the Domestic Operator and made interconnection easier to everybody. So the PSTN and the Cell Phone operator can’t hide their calls and can also be easily monitored. It was totally against operators. Still they don’t want to pass all the calls through ICX. If ICX can work properly, the ANS operators have to share the revenue with the government for each call.

Now comes to Mango and IIG. Before Mango, to get a high speed internet connection from BTCL was very tough every time. Their service was very poor and getting a connection from their premises was very hard for their bureaucratic thinking and attitude. The ISPs and the ISPAB always claimed about their service. BTRC took their request and include IIG in ILDTS framework, so that everybody can get an easy service. But I think BTRC mistakes about fixing the percentage of bandwidth portion. It should be variable condition, not fixed portion like 45-45-10. Now Mango is online with high bandwidth and serving the country very well. In the recent past when the SME-4 was down, only Mango runs the whole country by their west side cable with Singtel. Its an achievement for them as well as connecting the nation with the rest of the world. But the ISP owners now started to broadcast some wrong information against Mango.

In the WiMAX bid, Mr. Salam (CEO, Agni Online) who is raising the main allegation against Mango, was doing bid with V-TEL. As a state owned company BTRC reserved one license for BTCL. But for their transition and fund crisis they are not ready to invest in this sector. From the winning 3 companies, only Augere and Banglalion took the license. When BRAC denies to take the license, BTRC asked all the bidders step by step by dint of their auction position. The bidder no 4,5&6 that is V-Tel. Then BTRC came down to bidder no 7, that is Mango. At this position Mango requested BTRC to give them some more time to arrange the money, which is a huge amount. Of the 9 participants, when nearly everybody is rejecting the offer and at the end position when Mango wanted some time extension, BTRC give them the time extension to reduce the monopoly of the market, nothing else.

Mr. Salam also raised voice against Mango’s participation in WiMAX bid. As a data service operator Mango can participate in any kind of auction. Also in the auction BTCL ( also an IIG ) was given a WiMAX license as a Government Owned Company. So from that side, Mango can also take part in the WiMAX bid. More over it was within the WiMax guideline.

I’m very much delightful about BTRC’s work and future plan regarding 3G, LTE, Mobile Number Portability, IMEI Barring and Second Submarine Cable. I think it is only for BTRC we are talking with the lowest call charge of the world. Only for BTRC we are getting a low price high bandwidth internet connection to every home. As a citizen of the country I feel proud of their work and achievements and also to entering BTRC office and get a world class service. I want to see BTRC as a super-regulator in the sub continent.

In recent days I’ve found so many news against BTRC’s current Chairman and its activities. As a technical person and as a citizen of Bangladesh, I thought that I should write some about it and also I have some document which will clarify my writing.

Before this present Chairman, BTRC was like an office driven by the Government and funded by the operators. Every operator thought that they can do what ever they like in Bangladesh. And that happened also. They were playing with BTRC by money and force. I think when I first took my cell phone in 2000, I paid 8 taka per minute. But today I pay 0.68 paisa per minute to any cell phone. I used internet through Dial-up connection by 1 taka per minute and every month I had to pay 1000-1500 taka for a narrow band internet connection. But now I’m using 128-512kbps internet at my home and EDGE in anywhere in Bangladesh in a very cheap price. Very soon the home user of Dhaka will get fiber to their home. Entire thing was done by the present BTRC officials and in take care of the Chairman.

The operators don’t want to be underdog of BTRC. They want they will rules the telecom industry in their own way, where their profit is the key point. They are very much afraid of the accountability to the government. BTRC is installing CDR analyzer, Spectrum Management System to monitor the call volumes and spectrum, from where the main revenue will generate. After the ICX and IGW started working, all the inter operator and international calls can be monitored from BTRC, also from IIGs the international data link can be monitored. These things are very much un-wanted by the operators.

Mango IIG was introduced only for ISPs, because they always complain about BTTB’s internet service and their downtime. But now these ISPs are complaining about Mango. Why ?

The service of MANGO is very good and they have installed the state of art CISCO products to serve the country well. Last month when SME-4 was down, the country was run by MANGO only. So everybody can imagine how they have prepared to give 99.99% uptime service.

I think these ISPs will again complain about the WiMAX service provider also. Because, they will lose their profit when, WiMAX will come online.

If we want to see a Digital Bangladesh, the present BTRC should work independently with the present Chairman and Good staff. Also need to increase its power, that the industry will be equal for everybody with no monopoly.

What is a Call Center?

Call center is an office where a company’s inbound calls are received, or outbound calls are made. Call centers are increasingly popular in today’s society, where many companized have centralized customer service and support functions. Call centers employ many staff in customer service, sales and support functions.

Call centers are often large offices staffed with representatives who either make or receive phone calls. Depending on the size of the call center, a single office could have anywhere from a few dozen to hundreds of telephone staff. Depending on the needs of the company, call centers can make either incoming or outgoing calls. Some call centers focus on answering inbound calls, such as a bank that gives out a toll-free number for customers needing assistance. In that case, call center representatives can give account balances and take loan applications over the phone. Other call centers focus on outbound calls, such as a survey company. In that case, survey representatives make outbound calls to ask people to answer survey questions over the phone.

Call centers provide a number of advantages to companies. By centralizing telephone-based service and support in one location, companies can easily adjust staffing to match call volume. Call centers can be located almost anywhere, allowing companies to take advantage of time zones and cheaper labor rates in different states and countries. Call centers also centralize the technology needs of companies, allowing major telecommunications setups to be installed in a small handful of call centers instead of a number of smaller offices, making upgrades and training easier to complete.

Many call centers use a number of different technologies to help improve performance and customer experience. Inbound call centers often use automatic call distribution, in which incoming calls are assigned to representatives on the order they are received. Other call centers utilize call monitoring, in which customer calls are randomly monitored by quality assurance staff to ensure that phone representatives meet customer needs. Call center technology evolves constantly, helping call center staff assist customers more efficiently and effectively.

Call centers have been increasingly popular as outsourcing increases. With outsourcing, companies contract out some functions to other companies. As it can be expensive to maintain call center equipment and staff, some companies choose to outsource their telephone functions to an external call center. In this case, external call center staff can be trained to answer phone calls from a number of different companies.

What is Outsourcing?

Outsourcing referrs to a company that contracts with another company to provide services that might otherwise be performed by in-house employees. Many large companies now outsource jobs such as call center services, e-mail services, and payroll. These jobs are handled by separate companies that specialize in each service, and are often located overseas.

There are many reasons that companies outsource various jobs, but the most prominent advantage seems to be the fact that it often saves money. Many of the companies that provide outsourcing services are able to do the work for considerably less money, as they don’t have to provide benefits to their workers, and have fewer overhead expenses to worry about.

Outsourcing also allows companies to focus on other business issues while having the details taken care of by outside experts. This means that a large amount of resources and attention, that might fall on the shoulders of management professionals, can be used for more important, broader issues within the company. The specialized company that handles the outsourced work is often streamlined and often has world-class capabilities and access to new technology that a company couldn’t afford to buy on their own. Plus, if a company is looking to expand, outsourcing is a cost-effective way to start building foundations in other countries.

There are some disadvantages to outsourcing as well. One of these is that outsourcing often eliminates direct communication between a company and its clients. This prevents a company from building solid relationships with their customers, and often leads to dissatisfaction on one or both sides. There is also the danger of not being able to control some aspects of the company, as outsourcing may lead to delayed communications and project implementation. Any sensitive information is more vulnerable, and a company may become very dependent upon its outsource providers, which could lead to problems should the outsource provider back out on their contract suddenly.

While outsourcing may prove highly beneficial for many companies, it also has many drawbacks. It is important that each individual company accurately assess their needs to determine if outsourcing is a viable option.
