So this is day 3 for Videoblogging Week 2007.  I really didn't know what I was going to post about today, so I decided to have a little fun with time lapse.  I just put my camera outside my bedroom window and just recorded .5 seconds every 10 minutes.  I know, I know, it's not really time lapse, but that's what the pdx10 can do, so that's what I did...

However....I don't recommend leaving out your camera hanging out by the fire escape all night...I swear I must have gotten up like 3 times, just to make sure that the damn thing didn't fall down...
sigh....oh well...hope you enjoy!

Hello!!
I know, I know, long time no post.  There really is no excuse.  I lost my camera a few months ago and i just stopped video blogging.  Well, I just got a new camera and I promise to post more diligently. 

I'm now in Cambridge, MA attending the Women Action and Media Conference. I'll be speaking at the videoblogging panel, showing peeps how to make a video blog!!!

On May 24th many cities around the country decided to show their outrage to the greedy telecoms such as AT&T, Verizon, Bell South and Qwest. These companies are spending $1million dollars a week to buy votes in congress for their deregulatory legislation known as the COPE bill. COPE, which stands for Communications Opportunity Protection and Enchancement claims to offer more choices and more competion, but will in fact endager Public Access centers around the country. Public Educational and Government Channels around the nation - known as PEG - receive their money from negotiations with the city and cable companies. These negotiations are known as a franchise agreement. These franchise agreements occur on a local level and what Verizon and these other telcos are trying to do - is get rid of the local franchises and have one big national franchise; thus taking away local control. It's also like saying that Manhattan, Kansas has the same needs as Manhattan, New York - we all know that's just not the case. COPE also threaten to red-lin media services in low income, rural and minority communites. What's redline? That means that telcos can cherry pick which communities they will provide service to; therefore, communities they deem unprofitable will not get service. Local cities have expressed their opposition to this bill - now it's time for the public to stop this phone company backed legislation - and demand accountability to local communites and the public interest. Vlog_digital_divide

So as many of you know Vloggercon is coming up. 
I'll be speaking in one of the panels with 3 AMAZING WOMEN: Ryanne Hodson, Zadi Diaz and Brittany Shoot.  The topic of the panel is Node101 and the Digital Divide.
This vlog is basically some of the things that I would like to talk about during the panel.
As a person that works for public access, this topic is one that I deeply care about. The gap between the haves and the have nots is not closing and one of my deepest fears is that sometime in the not too far future all media will look, sound, say the exact same thing.
AND IT WILL ALL BE DICTATED BY ONE HUGE MEDIA CONGLOMERATE.
I believe videoblogging along w/ community TV can change this.
But in order for this to really work - we need to see/hear more stories from communities of color. 
I admit - when it comes to vlogging - I'm not doing as much as I should. I don't post enough and I don't teach enough.
But then I watch vlogs and the people telling the stories and I realize that I WANT to see more of the stories told by my perspective and others like me.
Mainstream media doesn't tell stories about people like me.
Or if they do then it's usually it's a stereotyped.
It's up to us to make our own stories.
If we care about free speech, if we care about communities that are disenfranchised and making sure their voices are heard, we need to work at it.
I need to work at it.
