isPermaLink="false">http://www.thetechlabs.com/?p=13715

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, mobile gaming is no joke, especially with lots of AAA titles making their way to mobile platforms.

Exactly what titles are we talking about? Currently, there is Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Grand Theft Auto 3, N.O.V.A. 3, Six Guns, and the Infinity Blade series to name a few.

Unfortunately, touch controls are a pain in the -for lack of a better word- ass. Realistically, playing a mobile game using touch controls can be sluggish, frustrating and most of all detracting- the immersion factor, often evaporates because of a poor control scheme.

Now, there are probably a few of you out there screaming bloody murder about how touch controls are not that awful. While this statement may be true, “not that awful” is not the same as “responsive”, “excellent”, or “revered”. Most gamers tolerate touch controls on a mobile device only because they have to. The few gamers who decided to purchase a Sony Xperia Play are the only ones experiencing what convenient mobile gaming controls feel like. Unless of course you own a PSVita, DS or PSP but those devices fall more under a separate portable gaming category.

Something has to be done about touch screen controls and virtual joysticks. Occasionally they do work well, but that’s quickly become the exception not the rule.

With that being said, third party peripherals and mobile gaming controllers saturate the mobile accessory market. All those some controllers were, at one time, touted to change the face of the mobile gaming industry. For the most part, every one of those accessories fell short because of a single issue- they were incompatible with a large selection of mobile software.

Why pay $50 or more for a mobile gaming adapter that only works with a select handful of games? It’s a complete waste of money.

Power A, like all that have come before, promises to change the mobile gaming industry with their recently announced MOGA controller.

What the Hell is a MOGA Controller?

MOGA is apparently an acronym for Mobile Gaming Controller, and that’s exactly what Power A has unveiled. The MOGA Controller is compatible with Android tablets and phones and connects wirelessly via Bluetooth.

The MOGA controller includes dual analog sticks and a more traditional console control scheme that should be far superior to the standard touch screen controls provided by most mobile games. In addition to the analog sticks, the MOGA controller also includes a four button layout (similar to a PSP, PS3, or Xbox controller) and two top mounted triggers.

The controller secures to the connected phone thanks to a rather unique and integrated foldout stand. It can also connect to Android powered tablets, without the stand, to make use of larger size screens.

Currently, there are only a total of 14 games listed to work with the MOGA but the list will, hopefully, grow by the end of the year. The compatible games include Duke Nukem 3D, Six Guns, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, Painkiller: Purgatory HD, Sonic CD and more.

The MOGA controller will come bundled with an exclusive app called “MOGA Pivot” that will work parallel to Google Play. MOGA Pivot will list compatible games and update all the necessary software to optimize use of the controller. Pivot will also scan apps installed on the Android device for compatibility; if and when pre-installed games become compatible, the app will automatically install the proper control profile for use with MOGA.

Will the MOGA Controller Change the Mobile Gaming Industry?

It’s unrealistic to assume the MOGA controller will truly impact the future of the mobile gaming industry. Many companies like Power A have tried, and failed, at creating a successful mobile device controller.

The problem lies in the rather scarce list of compatible software. Despite continuous promises by manufacturers to deliver more compatible software, such accessories have a knack for losing their usefulness. Some great examples of undesirable mobile gaming controllers include the Zeemote, and the iCade Mobile.

There is one alternative to the MOGA currently available called the iControlPad but we must warn you, the controller is unappealing. The reason it makes such an acceptable alternative is because of the unique Blutrol software which allows users to map certain buttons and actions from native apps. To reiterate, this feature allows users to map functions, within a previously incompatible app, using Blutrol.

How Much will the MOGA Controller Cost and When Will it Be Available?

The simple answer to the above question is that we don’t know. We could estimate costs and release dates, but they would probably be way off.

At launch, the MOGA controller will be exclusively available for Android devices, but there’s absolutely no reason why Power A wouldn’t eventually make the peripheral available for iOS devices too.

The only thing left to do is wait until Power A releases the MOGA and reveals some distributors. Considering the device was just unveiled, the release date shouldn’t be far off, but these days there are no guarantees. If you can’t wait, then consider checking out the iControl which is compatible with numerous platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone and more.

Mobile devices are essential for communication, but they can also help pass the time during lengthy periods of limbo – which is, essentially, just a fancier way of saying gadgets can be used for entertainment.

Android tablets and smartphones even make excellent toys for your children, and will provide hours of entertainment for them. Except, it is never a smart idea to hand an expensive device to a minion with no self-resolve. Furthermore, once you do it, once you hand over that device it’s going to be next to impossible to get it back unless, of course, you want to deal with hours of tantrums and unnecessary screaming.

Not to mention, giving a child free reign when playing with an Android device or tablet can lead to serious problems. Children can do many things during their playtime with the device that could lead to a less than nominal result. The child could drop the device thus resulting in a broken or cracked screen, or even submerge the device in nearby liquids when you’re not paying attention. Not to mention, inappropriate material litters the Google Play market, and there are lots of high priced apps that can be purchased with the simple push of a button – whoops.

When there’s a $400-$500 device involved, the last thing anyone wants is for it to be demolished by a curious toddler.

Luckily, Archos has released a tablet for munchkins. That’s right, we are talking about a tablet that is designed to withstand kid-safe poking, and prodding but still offers electronic bliss. We’re referring to the Archos Child Pad (we know, it is not an exceptionally creative name). It’s time to liberate your tablet or smartphone from the smudgy little hands of your beautiful little minion.

The Child Pad is a 7″ kid-friendly tablet designed with a slim (12mm) form factor, yet includes a durable plastic housing that is safe for rough little hands. Probably the best feature of all, is that the Child Pad has been filtered to include content that is only suitable for innocent, but prying, little eyes. Not only does the Child Pad include a filtered app store (more on that later), but it also includes a 6 month subscription to the Mobile Parental Filter by Editions Profil.

The Child Pad runs Android version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and will be preloaded with exclusive content from the new film Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The exclusive Alvin and the Chipmunks content will include behind the scenes clips, wallpapers and a themed online game.

Say it with us, yayyyyyyyyyy! Okay, so maybe we’re more enthusiastic about that Alvin content than you are.

The Archos Child Pad

The Child Pad is not, by any means, a dumbed down tablet. We’re willing to bet that even a Dad or two will feel the need to steal the device for personal use, which is acceptable because EVERY father knows how to take turns, right?

It sports a 7″ touchscreen display and is powered by a 1GHz processor combined with 1GB of installed RAM. As mentioned above, the Child Pad runs Android version 4.0 ICS, but it also includes a custom child friendly interface, with large size app icons that are perfect for chubby little fingers. The developers have even lumped applications in related folders so that all entertainment, tools and multimedia are easily and quickly accessible for the little ones.

Despite the child-proof design, the Archos Child Pad provides a complete internet experience thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi (802.11) radio. The Mobile Parental Filter from Editions Profil automatically filters inappropriate web content. The software uses an “intelligent content evaluation system” to verify and analyze websites in realtime and block content that is not safe for children. With the Archos Child Pad, you can truly be worry free while your child is browsing the internet (although, we are fully aware that a dutiful parent always keeps an eye on the child, no need to blast us).

A front facing webcam ensures that children can play with photo software and talk to family, with your express permission of course, via video chat software.

The Child Pad will also come preloaded with a suite of “educational” and “general knowledge” apps that are just perfect for younger audiences. ARNOVA claims the tablet is splendid for gaming, learning, coloring and drawing but naturally, the related apps will have to be installed.

In addition, the tablet will have access to the screened AppsLib market which offers only family friendly applications and content for download. This means that the tablet can be surrendered to a little one without fear of the child coming into contact with inappropriate content. All of the apps and downloadable content in the AppsLib market are free of charge, which subsequently means that parents won’t get any charges or surprise fees.

The Child Pad looks to be a device that is truly safe for children to have free reign.

Don’t believe what you’ve seen in zombie movies, because Hollywood is always askew when it comes to realism.

To survive a real zombie apocalypse, we recommend you follow these guidelines to a tee.

10 Guidelines to Help You Survive During a Zombie Apocalypse

Follow these ten steps closely and you’ll stay alive maybe just a little bit longer; otherwise we hope you like having your face chewed away (bad joke we know).

The Top 5 Tips to Help You Survive a Zombie Apocalypse

Stay Out of The Damn Sewers

For some insanely daft reason, every zombie movie has a scene in the sewers. Why? For the sake of all that is good in this world, stay the hell away from any sewer or drainage pipe during a zombie apocalypse. Humans have five senses for a reason. Sacrificing any one of those senses, during a time where ravenous husks roam free waiting for the chance to tear you to pieces with their bicuspids, is just downright silly.

Besides, most sewers smell really, really bad. Do you want to crawl around in human feces when you will probably have to wait weeks or months for a proper shower? No, we didn’t think so either.

Stay in Shape

The movie Zombieland said it best, “When the zombie outbreak first hit, the first to go, for obvious reasons… were the fatties.”

It doesn’t matter whether there are slow, hobbling zombies, or screaming sprinters of death, if you’re too fat to put one foot in front of the other and accelerate your body at a decent pace, then you’re going to have one hell of a time staying alive.

If you’re overweight you need to get out there and get some cardio done before the major outbreak hits. At least, by the time the plague tosses undead on your doorstep, you can be a little slimmed down.

The biggest part of cardio that any survivor will need is endurance, and endurance isn’t something you can just buy in a store. Endurance, especially when it comes to exercise, is earned over time. Your body builds up the ability to run, walk and scream bloody murder longer and longer – but the trick is, you need to move around to increase endurance.

It’s also worth mentioning that it is so easier to get in shape when you can watch Jane Fonda. There will be no watching of Jane Fonda in a zombie apocalypse, we can promise you that.

Always Travel in Groups, But Remain Emotionally Detached

In a zombie apocalypse groups are beneficial to your health. When the raving cannibals come hunting it’s easier to defend a location with more than one person, and it’s always safer to travel in groups too.

The problem with traveling in a group during a zombie apocalypse, arises when you become emotionally attached to anyone, or everyone, in your group. Whatever you do, don’t.

It takes a cold hearted bastard to survive the zombie apocalypse, and even though the trials and tribulations of the experience will harden you over time, you’ll still need to retain some emotional integrity. Besides, it’s dreadfully hard to pummel a zombie’s brain into a gooey mess when you’re crying like a baby over your buddy Jimbo that just got eaten for doing something stupid.

Remember, people are generally slow to think in dangerous situations, which means that some people are going to die for extremely stupid reasons.

You can’t waste time shedding a tear for anyone, especially stupid people. Hell, learn not to cry at all.

Pets Are Detrimental to Your Health

Pets are an added nuisance during a zombie apocalypse. To put it bluntly, pets are worthless.

If you have a pet, make sure you put it to sleep before you venture into zombie country, otherwise you may find yourself running after a furry little creature, separated from the group and miles away from anything you know.

Just a heads up cat lovers, we know you hold yourselves prodigiously over dog owners – but cats are pets too, kick em’ to the curb.

Kids also have a tendency to do the same thing. If you have a child during a zombie apocalypse, don’t be like Lori from the Walking Dead, keep a good eye on your kid and keep him or her by you AT ALL TIMES. Unless of course you want them to become a mincemeat sandwich while you’re not looking.

Substance Dependency is ABTGYK

Are you slightly confused by that header? No worries, we’ll spell it out for you.

Substance dependency is ABOUT TO GET YOU KILLED. Do you find yourself always needing a drink, smoke or toke? Unfortunately, those urges are not going to change when you’re fighting off killer cannibals in a high stress situation. Yes, zombies will cause you loads and loads of stress.

If you’re mind is too busy screaming and telling you to run off and satisfy your vice in a moment of danger, you’re probably going to die. Ween yourself off whatever dependency you have as soon as possible, or you may find that it will do more than just kill you- it will get you torn to pieces by a flesh mongering beast.

5 More Ways to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse

Green Transportation is Key

We’re not literally talking about green cars here, so even if you have a brand new lime green Mazda 2. That shiny new vehicle will do you absolutely no good when gas is scarce, and all the roads are blocked.

Have you ever seen what the highways and roads look like in the event of a massive evacuation or emergency? The roads fill up, fast.

Green transportation is key in the zombie apocalypse, and that means bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards and even feet. Always remember rule number one when using green transportation though, wear a helmet.

Oh, and you should probably wear some elbow pads and knee pads too. It hurts like a mother when you scrape your extremities up.

Never Underestimate a Good Blunt Object, Firearms Are Overrated

Movies are all about guns, especially zombie flicks. The bigger the gun, the more badassery that occurs.

While it is true that quite a few people have firearms available, there are a lot of people that own no firearms. We know, we were just as shocked as you that people don’t exercise their second amendment rights.

If you don’t have a gun, don’t fret. Firearms are overrated. They require maintenance and bullets, which can run out fast in a sticky situation.

Blunt objects will reign supreme in zombie country. As a matter of fact, objects that will cause any amount of hemorrhaging will be valuable. Blunt objects don’t run out of ammo, and there will always be an abundant supply.

Sorry dad, your bowling trophy will make a substantial zombie basher.

The Higher The Better

Are you afraid of heights? Well you better get over it fast because, in zombie country, the higher up in the sky you are the better. When your group settles down to make a temporary encampment always make sure it is as far from the ground as possible.

Aside from a divine miracle, chances are pretty high that zombies can’t climb. Higher will ALWAYS be safe, unless there are crazed Hunter zombies, like the ones that appear in Left 4 Dead, because then we’re all screwed.

You Can Never Have Enough Wood

One inanimate object will save lots of people in a zombie apocalypse. Wood.

If you barricade your group in a single location or are trying to make temporary shelter, you can never have enough wood – never. Wood can be used to cover all windows and entrances, and is the only tool that is proven to fortify a shelter. If you don’t have a Home Depot or Lowe’s right next to your shelter of choice, don’t worry – when we say wood we are simply referring to any piece that will complete the job.

Did you find some deadwood on the ground? It will do. Did you rip a door off it’s hinges? Yeah, that will work.

You can never have enough wood.

Stock up on Supplies Sooner than Later

Don’t be one of those idiots running around the grocery store looking for supplies, all while people are getting chewed to pieces around them.

There will always be that one guy who runs back into the store for some cheetos, and never comes back. Don’t let that happen to you.

Stock up on supplies before the crowd rush happens and if, for some god-awful reason, you miss the opportunity, wait until all of the other morons are dead. If you absolutely have to, steal from neighbors or passerby, but whatever you do, don’t venture into the open until after the gist of the zombie horde has dispersed.

In a world of zombies, there will always be zombies, there’s no arguing that, but would you rather take on small groups at a time or a shambling horde of thousands?

Not to mention, if you go out scavenging with the rest of the survivors you’ll probably have to fight off those crazy ladies who are dependent on their caffeine, and let us warn you, those suckers can throw a punch.

Google managed to make headlines earlier with the launch of its cloud storage system: Google Drive. The system has been finally developed to compete with the likes of Microsoft’s SkyDrive and Dropbox. While it has taken the company quite a while to get into the game, Google hit the ground running with a system integrated directly to Google Documents.

The new “Google Drive” seems to retain some of the core features that were formerly a part of Google Documents while also providing upgraded storage and better functionality in terms of product integration (more on that below). Obviously, there are a few things Google could do to make Google Drive even better but we’ll get to that later.

Google Drive: Storage

When looking at a cloud storage system, naturally the most notable feature is storage. In this case Google Drive, seems to offer users a pretty reasonable deal with 5GB free. In addition, the system also offers an optional storage capacity of up to 16TB of storage (that is about 8,000 hours of video coded in 720p High-def resolution).

Google Drive: The Competition

As mentioned earlier, Google Drive is designed specifically to take on its main competitors, namely, Microsoft’s SkyDrive and Dropbox. Both companies have developed relatively robust business models so there is a lot of room for competition.

The most recent pricing models for storage amongst the main competitors is as follows.

As noted above, Microsoft has responded hardest to Google’s entry and seems determined to break away from the pack. The upgrade offer to 25GB (from 7GB) easily puts it ahead of the rest and the upgrade process only requires a single click. Dropbox, on the other hand, seems to be falling behind the competition because despite the fact that it technically offers 18GB free, the only way to get from 2GB to 18GB is through referrals and that can be time consuming for most individuals or small groups. Unlike Dropbox, however, Google still has an advantage in terms of the sheer amount of storage available.

Microsoft also currently dominates the competition in terms of price. For instance, it charges $10.00/year for 55GB while Dropbox charges $99.00/year for only 50 GB. Google is not any better; the 25GB package costs $2.49/month. Strangely, the company does not have storage options between 50GB and 100GB. In my opinion, this is probably because Google (somewhat correctly) anticipated the intense competition for low-medium storage packages.

Instead, Google Drive has focused intensely on high-level storage packages ranging from 1TB – 16TB and seems to dominate the market here; Microsoft’s largest package is 125GB and Dropbox offers 1TB (and options for more space) at $795/year. Google’s 1TB package is attractively priced at $49.99/month, and the largest package, 16TB is $799/month. In other words, Google currently has a monopoly over high-level storage capacity, which is not bad for a system that is hardly a month old.

Google Drive: Sync

Users can download Google Drive on to their computers and then select the folders they want to sync. It is also possible to add files or even entire folders onto the local Google Drive folder, which automatically puts them in the cloud. Mobile users can download the Android App for Google Drive (an update for the Google Docs app). There is also news of Google Drive Apps for iOS and BlackBerry platforms.

Currently, Google Drive allows users to upload and access more than 30 different types of files including HD video, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I tried to upload MP3 files as well, and while users can store the files in the cloud it is not possible to play the audio files online. So, you will need to download the MP3 files to a particular device and then play.

Google Drive: Sharing

As mentioned earlier, Google Drive has been directly integrated into Google Docs. Thus, multiple users are still able to edit documents simultaneously, share them with others and track changes. Users can share links to files or folders via Gmail or Google+ and invite others to view and/or edit files.

Google Drive: Apps

One of the coolest features of Google Drive is the direct integration of Apps. Currently, there are hundreds of Apps related to productivity and management, but the only downside was that users had to download and access the Apps separately. Google Drive eliminates the cumbersome process by allowing users to access their favourite (Google Drive compatible) Apps directly from the ‘Create’ menu.

[Google Drive > Create > Other > *App*]

However, keep in mind that you will still have to sign in with your Google Account (the sign-in process is still separate, but less of a hassle) but the files are saved and directly accessible from your Google Drive menu. Some of the Apps include Gantter (project management) and mindmiester (mind maps).

Google Drive: Conclusion

Google has done an admirable job of wading into the competition and its efforts with Google Drive will certainly make the entire system more appealing to existing users. Yet, I am doubtful it will appeal to those who look only low-mid storage options, especially without the need for Google Docs. Instead, Google Drive’s storage capacity is particularly appealing to various businesses, which could undoubtedly benefit from storage options ranging from 1-16TB. As an user of Google documents, I am actually quite pleased with this development, but there are still plenty of annoying little things about the system as a whole. If it wants to compete effectively with Microsoft, Google is going to have to introduce a lot of changes to the Google Docs system.
