The beginning of Summer signals the start of family vacations, lazy days poolside, and if you live in Atlanta the opening of the much anticipated Southeastern Showhouse in Atlanta. While 2020 will always be remembered as a year of change, there is always always a bright light on the horizon. And if you are a design aficionado this is an opportunity to venture out (safely) to see a culmination of the best design talent from across the South.

This year the Southeastern Showhouse is located on 6 private, wooded acres in Buckhead, and is considered one of the “most sought-after in Buckhead.” Bestowed with the name Villa Flora this 11,000 square foot residence was originally designed for the late Charlie Ackerman, a prominent real estate and security industry figure described as “an iconic Atlanta civic leader.”

Designer/ McKinnon & Harris-Photographer/ David Christensen

With a distinctive upscale Southern California vibe, Villa Flora may be as close to Southern Californa as you can get without hopping on a plane. And if you enjoy the greater outdoors you can take a walk through the wooded paradise punctuated by original sculptures, or escape the steamy southern heat by relaxing in an outdoor oasis complete with a pool and spa (with a tall cool glass of your favorite beverage).

Villa Flora was renovated in 2020 by developer Benecki Homes, SOURCE, Linda MacArthur Architect, Cole Construction, with 15 of the Southeast’s top interior designers transforming the interior of “this inspiring, light-filled residence” in painstaking detail. This one of a kind retreat is open Thursday-Sunday through June 28th and for more information you can visit here

If you can’t make this year’s Showhouse just scroll on to see photos of this incredible estate!

Wallpaper will never go out of style with some patterns remaining unchanged for decades. From the famed Zuber wallcovering “Vues d’Amérique Nord” in the White House reception room to the timeless appeal of Sister Parish. Wallpaper is to the design world what a great dress is to fashion, a way to express your individual style.

Designers have long considered wallpaper a game-changer for its endless versatility whether you are papering an entire room or just an accent wall. One of the most memorable (and our favorite) wallcoverings are wallpaper murals. With varying designs from tropical jungle styles to mellow meadow scenes, murals provide a sense of luxury and serenity in a variety of rooms. And because of the amount of detail that goes into each piece of art new elements are seemingly are unveiled each time you look at it.

Wall murals are a memorable way to express your individual style.

One company that has captured our attention is Amsterdam-based interior design studio, Sir Edward. Founded by Clare Oei and Hans Erik Wagenaar in 2018 the company was started after the talented duo created several wallpaper murals for their own home and not surprisingly other people began requesting it. Their style of stunning antique landscapes has been heavily influenced by the wall paintings commonly found in old castles, colonial mansions, and canal houses. Striking details from old paintings and drawings are used as inspiration to create imaginary worlds from tropical jungles to mellow meadow scenes.

The murals created by Sir Edward are undeniably captivating and adventurous and below we are sharing just a few of our favorites.

It’s also known for historic treasures and unique attractions located in postcard-worthy towns.

Upstate New York is considered one of the hottest real estate markets.

The region is also considered one of the hottest real estate markets as hundreds of New Yorkers flock to the country to escape the heat of summer while indulging in more refined pursuits such as polo matches, shooting clubs, and wine tastings at some of the best vineyards outside of Provence.

Look inside one of the most desirable properties in Millbrook, New York

One of our favorite pastimes on weekends is looking at some of the most sought after properties on the market from horse farms to charming cottages, and this one certainly caught our eye. So grab a tall cool glass of your favorite beverage, pull up a chair (preferably poolside), and join us on this virtual tour of one of the most desirable properties in Millbrook, New York, Grace Hill Farm.

This picturesque English style main house is set on 150 secluded acres with 6 ponds, stream, and miles of trails for walking and riding. Well maintained gardens guide you around the main house mixing with the natural landscape before merging with fenced paddocks, grand Prix field, and a recently built state-of-the-art equestrian facility which includes a 14-stall stable, an indoor arena and luxurious viewing room splendidly appointed to accommodate large gatherings.

The home features a swimming pool, pool house, guest cottage, state of the art equestrian center, and a recording studio.

A private driveway leads you to the 3 bedroom main house featuring equestrian style design (once featured in Architectural Digest). The home is set on a hillside overlooking rolling lawns, woodlands, and well-manicured gardens.

When Sherry Hope-Kennedy, Studio SHK, redesigned a cramped dark kitchen and adjacent areas, she envisioned a light-filled unified functional space. After speaking with the family-doctors with two growing girls and elderly parents who often visit-she recommended that they open everything up. The result was a modern kitchen design filled with California sun and added storage.

The overall design intent was to establish a space that would accommodate the needs of the grandparents whose mobility is limited while allowing the family to maintain an active lifestyle. That meant deconstructing the galley kitchen to a more appropriate, open scale, raising the sunken living room to meet the kitchen floor for ease of use, adding more storage to aid in decluttering, and installing multiple overhead lights to brighten up the entire level. The open plan kitchen now overlooks an enlarged breakfast nook and emphasizes the dining room’s oversized-picture window.

Once a smooth, blank slate was in place, Hope-Kennedy turned her attention to the details which could accommodate various abilities with ease. She executed a modern kitchen design that met the individual tastes of her clients, a fusion of mid-century modern and traditional. To ensure the differing styles worked the walls and window treatments were kept neutral, rich wood tones were chosen for the flooring and cabinets, while accents of Pewter added a layer of sophistication.

Designer Sherry Hope-Kennedy has proven that the varying needs of a multigenerational home can all be answered in one cohesive design…without sacrificing style.

Summertime is right around the corner. And now that the weather is getting warmer, you probably want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. Some of us are even rethinking our outdoor spaces whether it’s a simple refresh or creating an entirely new one.

One of our favorite accents in a landscape is a fire feature, they not only provide a beautiful visual but also create a warm, lighted place for us to share food, stories, music, and experiences. And if you are looking for truly unique fire features that will “dazzle the senses” then consider the fire sculptures at Fire Features (and they are stunning). Recently, I spoke with Elena Colombo founder of the design and build firm about her fire sculptures which “are often the defining element of a landscape accentuating a space while giving it a unique character.”

Elena has turned what she calls her “healthy pyromania” into a booming business where she creates stunning fire, water, and wind features that adorn the landscapes of private homes, hotels, and resorts worldwide. Colombo is a classically trained sculptor and an architectural designer who works in bronze, steel, stone, concrete, and bone. Her designs extend architecture further into the landscape by creating forms that are at once ancient and modern, simple and elegant. Providing a way to satisfy our deep need to interact with the elements.

Reflecting on the inspiration behind “Fire Features” Eleana states “I am ever inspired by the elemental nature of fire and the primal need we have for it. Fire serves both our need for beauty and our instinct to gather around a warm lighted place; it is a destination wherever it burns. For nearly 700,000 years we have shared food, stories, and experiences around the fire; during the last hundred, we seem to have abandoned the hearth as the focus of the community. I would like to restore the hearth as a ceremonial place and as a point of convergence.” And without a doubt her designs reflect this goal.

Ahead, Elena shared some tips for designing an outdoor space that will draw people around for conversation, warmth, and happy memories!

String lights and lanterns add festive flair and ambiance to an outdoor space while creating a warm and cozy environment long after the sunsets.

Invest in comfortable seating that weathers the outdoors. No Adirondack chairs of any kind! There are many outdoor seating options available, create a space that is unique and inviting. Invest in quality pieces for the long term.

Bench seating is great for kids and smores around the fire. Add cushions in outdoor fabric for added comfort.

Make sure your outdoor area is as near as possible to the house so you can access food, drinks, and the powder room.

Plan for low light path lights to avoid trip hazards.

Include a fire feature.

The bi-annual Furniture Market at High Point is a whirlwind of activity. A chance to rub elbows with the design elite at glitzy parties, and must attend showroom events. As a result many of us never leave the city center, a dense concrete jungle of buildings housing some of the most well-known home furnishings brands in the world.

However, on the outskirts of town lies the historic district, and if you are into historic preservation it’s worth getting in your car for a little sight-seeing. As you drive down treelined streets through idyllic neighborhoods you will see stunning homes with colonial, craftsman, and revival influences.

The 2019 Junior League of High Point Showhouse was located in the historic Dalton Bell Cameron House.

Located in one High Point’s historic homes was the 2019 Junior League of High Point Showhouse. The Dalton-Bell-Cameron house was one of the first examples of the Craftsman style in High Point. Built-in 1913, the home survived several fires and a scheduled demolition, and fortunately with the creative vision of 21 talented designers the home was rebuilt and painstakingly preserved for future generations.

The home was a virtual Pinterest board full of ideas and inspiration.

And last years Showhouse was certainly worth the drive, a virtual Pinterest board full of inspiration layered with eye-catching textiles and one of a kind finishes. An homage to the art deco and arts and crafts designs motifs and colorways. Each of the beautifully finished rooms reflective of the individual designer’s creativity and talent, from the modern-day “Dining Study” designed by Scot Meacham Woods to the classic charm of the young lady’s retreat by Kristen McCory.

The bedroom retreat was a masterful mix of accented neutrals.

One of my favorite spaces, and there were many, was the bedroom retreat. McCory masterfully layered a”calming palette of accented neutrals” from the custom wallpaper to the rich textiles. A nod to “vintage elegance,” it was a room I could imagine curling up in with a good book or getting ready for a high society soiree.

If you weren’t able to attend the showhouse, I’m sharing pictures of the stunning space, full of ideas and inspiration to help you create your own bedroom retreat!

Over the past few months, life has changed for many of us due to the Coronavirus, and we find ourselves facing a new reality: working from home. While some have been working from a home office for years it’s an entirely new situation for others. And with it comes challenges, spaces that aren’t functional along with the stress of creating a routine.

The concept of working from home has become the new normal and for many, the only option. And with that we are having to rethink our workspaces, some home offices are thoughtfully designed while others need to be recreated—particularly if you don’t have a permanent set-up, or you find yourself sharing space with others. So if you are going to be spending a lot of time in your home office, it’s important to have a beautiful, functional yet inspiring space to work in.

Ahead, Wade Weissmann, founder and principal of Wade Weissmann Architecture is sharing essential design tips on how to create the perfect home office.

1. Integrate color into your workspace

“Color! This cannot be overstated. Bringing color into your home is a great way to invite the outside in. Color also has a lot to do with mood and with eliciting creativity. Whether it is with paint or furniture, I highly recommend finding a way to integrate color into your workspace.”

Photography/David Bader

2. Play with texture.

” I love to use something such as wood in a home office. It feels professional but it is not stuffy. It is another way to bring the outdoors in.”

Photography/ David Bader

3. Find a room with a view.

“If your space happens to have a view, be sure to take advantage. It’s easy to begin to feel isolated when working at home. Having a view of the outside world provides that connection. Additionally, nature provides a sense of calm.”

Photography/ David Bader

4. Incorporate unique elements.

“Incorporate unique elements, things that make it feel like your own space. For example, a gallery wall.”

Photography/ David Bader

5. Hang art in your home office.

“Speaking of galleries, hanging art in your home office is another recommendation. Since it’s your home office, you have the ability to pick pieces that really speak to you, which is an ability you may not have in a shared space.”

Photography/Alyssa Rosenheck

6. Light is an important part of your home office.

“A dark space is not the most conducive to creativity. If you’re at an early enough stage with your home office, I would recommend having several windows installed. If you’re at a later stage, I recommend adding fun lighting fixtures or lamps. If you live in a cold climate, a fireplace can be a unique addition to your home office. This will provide warmth, light and a peaceful atmosphere.”

Photography/ Alyssa Rosenheck

7. Include natural elements in a home office.

“I love to include natural elements in a home office. Flowers, for example. You can include elements that are more unique to your geographical location. Perhaps you live in an area where pinecones are prevalent, and you can include these in your home office. This is another way to be creative with your space.”

Photography/ David Bader

8. Create spaces that are flexible.

“Most traditional offices will have a single desk and a chair. I like to add additional furniture in the home offices I design. This can be a way to get a fresh perspective for yourself, sitting in a different spot in your office. This can also be useful for encouraging creativity amongst your team. Under normal circumstances, this is a great place to gather. I believe in creating spaces that are flexible and that you would want to gather in even when not sitting at your desk or working.”

Photography/ David Bader

9. Incorporate items that provide inspiration.

Lastly, I think it’s nice to have items that provide inspiration. If you’re into music, include a retro record-player and records in your office. If you love to read, add books to your shelves that get your creative juices flowing.

Over the last seventeen years I’ve worked in the design industry, first as a designer and since 2011 as a blogger and influencer. It’s an industry that I’m very passionate about, and throughout my travels I’ve met some truly remarkable and talented people. From designers, artists, brands to makers. People who have left an indelible mark on the industry, driving trends or creating collections that grace homes both big and small.

Whether it’s hand-loomed textiles or furniture hand-crafted by small companies operating out of a garage. There are so many dedicated creatives whose sole purpose is to make our homes feel uniquely ours.

Yet the world has changed over the past few months. We are facing uncertain times which is affecting so many businesses and livelihoods.

And we want to do our part, to support the design industry through a new Series on the blog “Spotlight on Art & Design.” The goal is simple-to to highlight businesses and bring awareness to those who make our world a beautiful place to live in. So whether you are looking to connect with a designer virtually, buy a new piece of artwork or are looking for a new wallpaper source, I hope you”ll check out their websites and follow them on Social Media.

Yates Desgyn

Showhouses are to the design industry what fashion is to the runway. An opportunity for designers to flex their creative muscle and whet their design appetites. And while the results are always stunning, it leaves us to wonder what the houses looked like “before.” Some were vacant or newly constructed and in a few cases, the interiors were already flawlessly designed.

Before the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach made its debut in February, it was a breathtaking residence designed and owned by world-renowned antiques dealer and designer, Lars Bolander and his artist wife, Nadine Kalachnikoff. Built over a decade ago, the Plantation style home known as ‘Bamboo Hill’ was inspired by Dutch and African architecture. A tribute to openness and light.

The Plantation style home is a tribute to openness and light.

Nearly all the rooms in the 8751 square foot home open to the outdoors, a seamless integration between the inside and outdoor spaces. The interior was a thoughtfully layered homage to the couples travels, from one of a kind antiques to a curated art collection. Currently listed for sale, ‘Bamboo Hill’ is a beautifully narrated design story whose chapters are continuing to unfold.

A beautifully narrated design story.

Ahead, I’m sharing the stunning” befores” of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House Palm Beach, and here you can see the”afters.”

Montana is a vast wilderness that stretches into Canada, defined by numerous mountain ranges, lakes and unending grasslands. It’s also considered one of the best places to live, an unspoiled gem, drawing many permanent and 2nd home owners to settle in “big sky” country.

Designer, John Cialone redesigned a 15-year-old Montana home that is a study in refined comfort.

It was in Montana that John Cialone from Tom Stringer Design Partners completed an update of a home built over 15 years ago. Cialone had already designed the interiors for the homeowners Florida home and their Chicago pool house. After a two-day visit at the house, Cialone took notes and came back a few months later with a plan that revived the decor along with updates to the lighting for better, more natural light. Everything chosen was about comfort, lightness in scale with timeless appeal, the goal to capitalize on the elements that worked and remove those which felt too contrived. The end result is as stunning as the surrounding landscape.

A design aesthetic still rooted in the Rocky Mountain West.

With a design aesthetic still rooted in the Rocky Mountain West, the result is a home that feels “more balanced simpler and lighter overall,” allowing the surrounding vista and mountain views of Bitterroot Mountains to be front and center.

Ahead, Cialone has highlighted some tips you can use to update your home whether it’s a log cabin in the wilderness of Montana or a high rise in the windy city.

TIP: Good and flexible lighting is everything.

In addition to adding more decorative lighting in terms of lamps, floor lamps, and sconces, we re-lamped all the existing fixtures to 2700K LED and adding new dimming features to give the house a flexible lighting scheme.

TIP: Create an intimate space.

This vacation home is built for entertaining groups but when the owners are there alone, I wanted to give them space that felt intimate and good for just two people. There are now several cozy seating areas that allow two people to feel at home in the large spaces.

TIP: Paint in White.

“Log homes are fun but too much brown from the logs can make a house feel heavy and dark. Some of the brown-stained built-ins, wall-paneling, and ceiling details were painted white (with a bit of distressing!) to help provide some contrast.”

TIP: Turn a Cabinet into a Bookcase.

“On the 2nd floor of this vacation house, there was a tall hall built-in cabinet which was the dumping ground for books and the client’s collectibles. We removed the doors, painted the interior and added bookcase lights. It turned the hall into a cozy reading area and made a focal point of a once uninteresting hallway.”

TIP: Inside Out.

“I love taking an outdoor piece and bringing it inside. In a guest bedroom, a once rickety outdoor bench became an ottoman cocktail table with a new thick seat cushion.”

Tip: Frame it

“Our client has an incredible collection of unique accessories from travels around the world. A once hard-to-display, Thai horse puppet, became a focal point over a sitting room fireplace once framed.”
