Welcome to this weeks Blog Hop! This week has been long for us….awaiting the arrival of our newest family member. We are still waiting on baby Phinehas and our broody momma duck has yet to hatch any eggs or give up on her nest. We are still holding out hope that she will be successful!

On a 1/4 acre in a small town lives a slightly deranged woman (that’s me!) who never thought she would be a Farm Girl again. I tried so hard to “escape” my roots, but then I grew up, got married and had a family. My oldest country kid (I have two sons 7 and 1) asked for a pet chicken a few years ago, so I did what any good mom would and bought him one! That was the beginning of the end so to speak. We now have chickens, ducks, and rabbits (besides non “farm” animals which include such oddities as a baby snapping turtle and a baby red squirrel we are rehabbing.) I bake using sourdough, I garden to produce healthy food for my family, but most of all, I have learned to embrace with a passion all those things that I once wanted to distance myself from. Bassinet to Moses Basket

With little Phinehas taking his time to arrive I have been working on a few little projects for him. One of those was taking the wicker bassinet my mother had for me and converting it to a moses basket of sorts.

I’ve always loved this little basket but it didn’t exactly scream “me” if you know what I mean. The light wood with the green and pink stripe was definitely from the era of my birth.

At first I thought I would just spray paint the bassinet white and see if I could use it to contain blankets or something in Noah’s room.

At that point I decided 1) the white color wasn’t my favorite and 2) the hood had to come off. At this point I stalled out for a number of months in indecision. Painting a passed down bassinet is one thing…..chopping it in half and hoping I could get it back together was another thing all together.

But I finally mustered up the courage and chop away I did, carefully cutting the basket along the line I wanted.

You Can’t Garden Here!

We are excited (and super grateful) to welcome Dani’s aunt to our space this morning. We are so inspired by what she is doing we planted up a few hay bales ourselves this last week! Enjoy her great story and get entered to win a fabulous book on her blog!

Introduction

If this is being posted then likely my niece Dani has made me (or will soon be making me) a great-aunt again, so congratulations to both Dani and Kevin. I can’t wait to meet my new great-nephew! I am happy to be doing a guest post today for The Adventure Bite.

Thank you Dani and Kevin for having me. While we’re talking family here I’ll introduce myself. My name is Suelynn Jacobus. My husband and I live in Oregon where we run our trucking business.

We have 4 teenagers, who are all amazing individuals. It has been bittersweet to watch them grow up over the years, but grow up they have and I’m thankful I was able to be there for much of their growing up years.

For this guest post I chose to introduce what will be a series on our garden experiment here in the High Desert of Central Oregon where we have a short growing season, cool nights and frosts in July which all together make gardening a challenge to be sure. I am a wife and a mom to 7 kids (4 of whom still live at home). We have a micro farm (in a typical suburban housing tract) consisting of a garden and 18 chickens.
