Colleen is a special education teacher turned stay-at-home mom to three little ones – ages 3, 2, and 1. Her days are filled with laughing and tears, joys and frustrations, toddlers and babies. The basics of gardening were gifted to her by her mother and father starting at a very young age. Through her urban homesteading efforts (which she blogs about on her site, Five Little Homesteaders) she hopes to lead her family down the path of leading a more sustainable, intentional, and full life.

Refreshing The Blog Design

You may have noticed over the last week or so that there has been lots of new changes on the blog visually speaking! While I am always tweaking things here and there I decided a few things really needed some attention this last week.

So here are some of the highlights and perhaps more importantly why I made them:

I shortened up the header to make a bit more space “above the fold” which basically means what you see when the page first loads. This enabled me to add our welcome message and still have our ads start “above the fold” which is a requirement for our new ad company.

Then I added some new pretty social media buttons and pushed them up into the header image to save more valuable real estate on my sidebar.

I changed our photo from this one:

to our engagement photo. My reasoning is that you can’t actually tell what we look like in the old photo and we want to make people feel like they know who we are when they first arrive on the blog. You wouldn’t hang your head when you are introducing yourself to someone new would you?

Next big changes are going to be in the Category pages. These are the Food, Design, etc.

Our Favorite Cinnamon Roll Recipe

Cinnamon rolls have to be one of the finest inventions of mankind. This cinnamon roll recipe was not only phenomenal but it was executed perfectly on the first try by my husband who hasn’t baked a thing since his mom taught him how to bake in middle school!

Though he is an amazing cook and it’s debatable in my book whether his German Pancake Pizza should count as “baking” or not. In all fairness though he hadn’t worked with yeast and kneading dough and he totally nailed these. Nice work babe!

That’s love on a plate right there.

Oh and did I mention I got totally surprised and spoiled with this spread on Mother’s Day?

Kevin had been talking all week about the surprise breakfast that he was going to make me for Mother’s Day. When I saw two entire bricks of butter and he mentioned that he needed scalded milk I was suspicious. Then when he rolled out of bed hours before everyone was awake on Sunday morning I had a pretty good inclining something tasty and yeasty would be gracing our breakfast table.

I was barricaded in our bedroom with a cup of coffee and my iPad and told to relax while these amazing smells wafted under the door. Somehow he wrangled all this food and managed to keep Noah from screaming his head

Master Bedroom Update!

So excited to share with you our work in the master bedroom!

It’s been a few….ok quite a few weeks since we got started on this project. Living in the living room is always a strain on the mind more than anything but with all the garden projects going on we just couldn’t stop long enough to get this project wrapped up.

Finally I decided I had the time and energy to spend over the course of a few days and got the room cleaned up and vacuumed under the baseboards. Then sweeping and mopping to get it nice and clean.

The next day I did the base priming with a roller on a long stick. Getting on my hands and knees anymore is becoming quite the chore so I left the edges for Kevin to hand brush later that weekend.

Finally it was time to tile! The transition around the corner out of the kitchen was by far the trickiest and took most of one evening for Kevin. After that though it was easy sailing! Nothing like peel and stick tile to make you feel super satisfied with how much flooring you can lay in an hour or two!

We knocked out the first third of the room while Noah napped
