People are sayin’ it looked like a freakin’ graveyard over here! Oh yes, yes it does. I honestly intended to have an open house to get rid of all the junk lying around but who has the time? My WordPress is outdated (yeah, askimet as well. Spammer, reload and attack!). The design feels kinda aged. I cannot and would not dare and try to move to WP 3.X with all the changes I made to the original k2 theme framework. And my last.fm plugins seems broken (what’s up with that?). Plus, in the meantime, I got my hands on some pretty neat domains that want to be excruciated. And some design ideas are floating in and around my head.

I promise, I keep the world posted on what’s going on with those projects. Until then, there are some stories to read here (mostly in German), a couple of old designs to check out and some pictures and trivia. Until we meet again…

Still alive?

Just to show the world (and search engines maybe) that I am still alive, I post something without having to say anything. Is that bad? Well, you should look into my head, folks.

I wish I could claim otherwise but I cannot be sure that things will change. They will eventually. Until then this place will remain a digital graveyard. I do apologize for wasting URL resources, server/database space and energy (green IT does not exist).

See what I received from a “legitimate” online dating platform. They’re certified and everything:

Apparently, I used the spam address in conjunction with pretending to be female and the name Penis. Hence, “Dear Miss Penis”.

Who calls a dating service “elite partner” anyway!

Get Offline Gmail outside the US and UK

In an urge to get my hands on Gmail Labs’ most recent experimental functionality and due to the fact that the Google decided to roll it out exclusively in the US and the UK (I don’t even care why this time), I had to come up with a way to dupe the system.

It is really quite simple.

Route all your http and https traffic through a US or UK proxy (find those e. g. here)
Go to your Gmail Settings » Labs
Now, the first feature should be “Offline”. Enable it.
Switch back to your regular proxy settings (disable the proxy)
Get some coffee while Gmail downloads mail after mail (five years in my case)

Almost forgot: of course, you need Google Gears installed. But if you came this far, you’re probably aware of this imponderability.

For anyone arguing “this was pretty obvious”.
Duh! I know I haven’t found the holy grail but to those who were wondering if it was worth spending half an hour finding a reliable proxy to even get to Gmail Labs’ Settings: Yes, certainly!

By the way, I changed my password before using the proxy. It’s probably just paranoia but you’ll never know.

Watching the new Family Guy season, again (yes, we’re counting no. 7 right now), it makes me wonder: how crazy, amateurish, bizarre and scrumptious can it get?

iPhone hack: How to use a custom message tone

Since all the tutorials and forum posts on how to install a custom SMS tone have been rather vague, here is my own quick and dirty solution. Works pretty well on my phone.

REQUIREMENTS:

A jailbroken iPhone
SSH access installed and enabled
Wi-FI enabled and both your iPhone and your computer connected to the same network
Balls

//Preparing your message tone

Make sure your message tone already has the right length (10-30 sec.) and format (AIFF). If not prepare it e.g. using Audacity or iTunes’ import function (Preferences > General > Import Settings > AIFF encoder; does not crop to the correct length, though).
Rename the .aiff file to .caf (e.g. sms-received1.caf)

//Uploading the tone to your iPhone

Access the iPhone via SSH (if you’re familiar with SSH and/or using Terminal skip to 4)
Find your phones IP address: Settings > Wi-Fi > Click the small, blue arrow button next to the network name
Use Cyberduck or equivalent software to connect to your phone: Connection method “SFTP (SSH)”, address “root@YOUR_FREAKIN_IP_ADDRESS”, path “/” (if you’re security unconscious enough, your password will be “alpine”)
Find folder System/Library/UISounds/
Replace one/some of the sounds below with your just created message tone

Here’s how the file names translate into the sound names:

sms-received1.caf = Tri-Tone
sms-received2.caf = Chime
sms-received3.caf = Glass
sms-received4.caf = Horn
sms-received5.caf = Bell
sms-received6.caf = Electronic

I try to keep the steps as rudimentary and easy to follow as possible. However, if you run into problems and quirks, leave a comment. Otherwise, enjoy!

Also, I included my two favorite Simpsons sounds (.zip): Homer’s “doh!” and Nelsen’s “Ha Ha” in as AIFF. The original wave files come from thesoundarchive.com. They don’t seem to own the rights, therefore they probably won’t sue me.

Ich war am Wochenende wieder gut unterwegs.
Ist ja bekannt, dass sich wilde Tiere nicht gern domestizieren lassen. Ich bin da keine Ausnahme.

Im folgenden ein Auszug aus der Presse:
“Am Wochenende hielt ein ausgebüxter Steinbock Jäger und Polizei im Allgäu auf Trab. Am Sonntag konnte das Tier in Buxheim betäubt und eingefangen werden, gab ein Sprecher der Polizei am Sonntag an.

Vor rund einer Woche schon war das Tier aus einem Wildgehege in der Nähe von Memmingen ausgebüxt. Jäger entdeckten das Tier am Samstag in einem Wald bei Buxheim, da dieser den Steinbock aber mit einem Mufflon verwechselte, ließ er das Tier laufen.

In der Nacht zum Sonntag gingen mehrere Meldungen ein, dass das Tier in Buxheim gesichtet wurde. Letztendlich konnten Passanten den Steinbock dann in einen Garten treiben, dieser sprang aber mit einem lockeren Satz über den Gartenzaun und setzte seine Flucht fort…”

Recently, I have been spammed by Christian fanatics. Spreading the word of God and all that crap. They tried and actually did bypass the spam filter by chumming up with me by sending my pictures of the Pope at some mass in Washington and even more of a Mount, a religious memorial of some sort. And NO, I am not gonna show those pictures here. I’d only take it as a challenge. Who can sue whom over what but I guess I am too lazy to sue over such baloney.

Father Ziegler, how gracious of you to send me 8 unsolicited, boring pictures (each of 1,7 MB) but, with all due respect, go f*** yourself. Oh, and yes, I checked your email address. It belonged to True Vine, a Christian ISP and online directory. Who needs filtered high speed DSL? Did I miss something? I always believed the reason why ISPs are complaining a lot is streaming media, p2p and illegal downloads, meaning evil TV shows and porn. Maybe, Christian fanatics have found other purposes for broadband; if so, that’s what I call true innovation. Well, you cannot accuse them of not copying what already worked in the real (virtual) world. They have gone Web 2.0ish with their MySpace clone MyPraize.com. It has as much visual appeal as those fake Russian dating sites; just like MySpace but with less individuality, of course.

And don’t forget to check out GodTube. This is what I love most about ranting about the bad internet: Quotations. Their featured video “A Man Fell in a Hole” reads in the subtext

It excruciatingly reminded me of the time two Mormons tried to proselytize me by arguing if I wouldn’t join their sect my soul would be damned forever because only they were entitled to eternity in heaven. I can’t recall exactly how they distinguished between the various Christian believe clusters but some of them might also be going to hell. I honestly don’t care. Before spending eternity with these lame suckers in heaven, purgatory here I come!
