Has the iPhone had its day?

We take a look at the latest consumer trends for mobile technology

The mobile technology industry is one of the fastest-moving in the world. As befits a sector which sells tools for lightning-fast communication and trans-national calls and messages at the touch of a button, the growth and expansion of the popularity and usage of mobile telephone devices is one of the barometers of the speed and voracity of supply and demand in twenty-first century economies.

And as one might expect in an industry built on speed, rapid communication and quick-fire response, the trends and features which characterize the industry’s leading players also change and transform rapidly, with great force and sometimes curious side-effects.

Who after all would have predicted that the iPhone, the success story which really kicked off the smartphone phenomenon nearly ten years ago, would be eclipsed by a little-swooned-over brand, Samsung, that’s now one of the most in-demand in the world?

And who would have predicted that pay as you go sims would find a resurgence of popularity as do-it-yourself mobile networks like giffgaff create flexible, bundle-based packages for smartphone dealers who are now beginning to tire of the always-increasing monthly charges from contract phone suppliers?

Let’s take a closer look at these two major trends in the mobile industry, and examine whether they are passing phases, or whether in fact they tell us something prescient about modern consumer behaviour.

iPhone vs Samsung Galaxy: smartphone kings?

This year, with the release of the much-anticipated iPhone 5, the big news was not that this Apple megastar was the big hit. Rather, the huge news of 2012 is that Samsung’s Galaxy range, the iPhone’s biggest competitor in recent years, has seemingly cemented its reputation as the world’s favourite smartphone. Reports in mid-November confirm that for Q3 of this year, the Samsung Galaxy 3 helped Samsung outsell Apple and Nokia.

Regular new models, solid advertising campaigns and steady, stylish reputation mean the brand has been seen favourably, and we may find that it wins out in the long term.

Pay as you go returns

Another new trend on the radar is the re-emergence of pay as you go as an option for smartphone users and travelers who wish to use a more flexible, personal tariff. Shop and call centre-free network giffgaff, owned by O2, is the epitome of this. Bundles and goodybags allow users to keep buying data for their smartphones without a contract.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 was announced recently and has a decent list of specs. The Google Nexus 7 which has been designed by Asus is so far one of the unbeatable tablets in the market with a good price tag. The Korean Giant will definitely be facing some tough competition from the Nexus 7. Here is a comparison between the two tablets.

Ergonomics & Design

The Nexus 7 measures 198.5 mm in length, 120 mm in breadth and 10.5 mm in thickness. It weighs 340 g. The dimensions of the Galaxy Tab 2 are not known. The Galaxy Tab 2 features a PLS LCD display of 7 inches with a resolution 600 * 1024 pixels and a pixel density of 170 ppi. The Nexus 7 sports a LED backlit TFT display of 7 inches with a resolution of 800 * 1280 pixels and a sharpness of 216 ppi. The Nexus 7 screen is made of protective Corning Glass.

OS

The Galaxy Tab 2 is equipped with Android operating system the version being v4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The Nexus 7 works on Android platform as well except that the version is v4.1 (Jellybean). The Galaxy Tab 2 is driven by a dual core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. The Nexus 7 is driven by a quad core processor with an Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and 1.3 GHz clock speed.

Memory

The Galaxy Tab 2 has 8 GB storage with 1 GB RAM. The Nexus 7 has 8 GB and 16 GB models each available with 1 GB RAM. The Nexus 7 does not have a card slot. The Galaxy Tab 2 has a micro SD slot that can house up to 32 GB.

Camera

The Galaxy Tab 2 features a 3.15 MP primary camera with features as geo tagging, etc. The Nexus 7 is equipped with a 1.2 MP unit in the rear with video calling feature. The Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Tab 2 record video with a quality of 720p. The Nexus 7 doesn’t have a front camera but the Galaxy Tab 2 owns a VGA as its secondary camera.

Connectivity

The Nexus 7 doesn’t have 2G, 3G or 4G networks. The Galaxy Tab 2 is a CDMA device. GPRS and EDGE features aren’t available either. However, the tablets are Wi-Fi enabled and also have Bluetooth feature. The Nexus 7 additionally has a NFC chip.

Battery Life

The Nexus 7 is driven by a Li-Ion battery rated at 4325 mAh offering 10 hours of talk time. Details about the Galaxy Tab 2’s battery aren’t known.

Price

The 8 GB Nexus 7 version is priced at $235 while the 16 GB version is available at $275. The Galaxy Tab 2’s price is not known yet.

Wrap Up

The Nexus 7 is a solid performer and easily the best tablet around for the thriftier buyer. It has a wider range of great features as compared to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Moreover, with so many Galaxy Tabs in the market, there is nothing absolutely great about this one. The Nexus 7 has better features in almost all zones. So, the Nexus 7 is the obvious winner.

Each stone is fixed individually, giving the measure of the precision with which each piece has been worked. The device comes in a wooden box, with certificate of authenticity. If you really want this then you have to pay 3,495 pounds. Not everyone will appreciate the proposal, disliked by those who love simplicity. Those who like to stand out, however, will be tempted by the work, which expresses his character in refined form and not excessive.

Even a simple audio accessory with the legendary logo in a proper light can play a similar role with dignity. That symbol, in fact, is able to arouse special emotions, anywhere. Who does not love Ferrari can not understand it, but no matter. The market, after all, is full of gadgets to suit all tastes. Everyone then goes to confession in the church of your choice.

The earphones are made of lightweight aluminum, molded in a sober style. The articles are equipped with 10 mm drivers with patented technology Thin Film Acoustic Technology (TFAT9) and shield from the noise well. Even if the sheet is not breaking, the charm is all there, at least for lovers of the myth, in exchange for the cost of 167 euro, also receive a compact protective case made of carbon fiber.

The new Droid family’s smallest member – the Motorola Droid Razr M has made quite an impression. It is adorned with a quality screen and slim line dimensions. The phone is well stocked in specs and is definitely going to give some tough competition to other smartphones in the market. In today’s article, we are comparing the Droid Razr M with the top phone of today’s market, the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Ergonomics & Design:

The S III measures 136.6 mm lengthwise, 70.6 mm breadthwise and 8.6 mm thick. The phone weighs 133 g. The Razr M measures 122.5 mm in length, 60.9 mm in breadth and 8.3 mm in thickness. It weighs 126 g. The S III features a Super AMOLED display with amazing clarity and brightness and a resolution of 720 * 1280 pixels spread over the 4.5 inch panel. The Razr M also has a Super AMOLED touchscreen but with a resolution of 540 * 960 pixels. It is a 4.3 inch panel and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass like the S III.

OS:

The phones run on Android v4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The S III is driven by a quad core processor clocked at 1.4 Ghz and packed with an Exynos 4412 quad chipset. The Razr M is powered by a dual core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz.

Memory:

The S III comes in three models based on internal storage – 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB each available with 1 GB RAM. The phone has a micro SD slot that can house up to 64 GB of extra memory. The Razr M has 8 GB of internal space and 1 GB RAM. Its micro SD slot can house up to 32 GB.

Camera:

The phones sport 8 MP shooters in the rear with features as LED flash, geo tagging and touch focus. The S III camera can simultaneously shoot HD videos and images. The phone cameras can record 1080p video at a frame rate of 30 fps. The S III features a 1.9 MP secondary camera that can shoot 720p video at 30 fps. The Razr M has a VGA as its front camera.

Connectivity:

The phones support 2G, 3G and 4G networks. While the S III is GSM and HSDPA enabled, the Razr M has a dual antenna system. It supports both CDMA and GSM connectivity. In other words, the Razr M can be used anywhere in the world. EDGE and GPRS are enabled on both phones. Wireless connection options include Wi-Fi 802.11, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot, etc. Bluetooth, NFC and micro USB v2.0 are local area connectivity options.

Battery Life:

The S III is fuelled by a Li-Ion battery rated at 2100 mAh. The Li-Ion battery in the Razr M has a power rating of 2000 mAh.

Price:

The S III is available at $600. The Razr M is supposed to be available at $99 on a two year deal.

Wrap Up:

The Motorola Droid Razr M projects itself as a very popular phone indeed. It is cost effective and the specs are quite a handful for such a price range. It is not without faults though. The design is not up to the mark and screen size seems cramped at times. The Droid Razr M is definitely a phone to watch in the coming months. However, it may not be able to provide competition to the Samsung Galaxy S II.

There has been a huge debate behind the scenes about which mobile operating system is better – iOS, Android or Windows. The two big hitters in the market today are Apple and Android, and so it seems obvious that it would be one of those two since they account for over 50% of the total phones sold every year. But if you’re looking for a phone with unprecedented access to content on the internet, unparalleled reliability and a host of great games then you should look no further than the Android, which is probably the reason why Android smartphones are dominating the market these days.

The Android OS was developed as a standardized operating system that could run on any handset. This meant that companies could spend their time building quality phones and tweak the software to bring their particular phone’s strengths to the surface. So whatever kind of phone you have now, you can be sure that if you need to upgrade, you won’t have to spend a lot of time getting used to a new operating system, as most of the working remains the same and only some useful new features are added along the way to make the operating system more engaging for users.

As well as this, the amount of games and apps available on the Android marketplace is astounding. Hundreds of new titles are produced every month, so the avid gamer will have no problem finding something to play. Not only that, unlike the Apple app market where most of the apps are paid, Android has thousands of free apps that offer great entertainment for zero investment. As well as this, the integrated web browser allows full access to everything that the internet has to offer. So if you’re more interested in playing in an online casino environment, this will be the sort of thing you’ve been looking for.

No matter what your game, you’re sure to find something that will interest you. Whether you’re mad about Poker, roulette or other online casino games, or want to find a new puzzle game to keep you busy as the winter months draw in, there’s something to suit all tastes and it’s all available right in the palm of your hand. Gaming really has come home.

The LG Optimus Vu that was unveiled at the MWC 2012 is going to be marketed as the LG Intuition by Verizon. The LG Intuition is more of a phablet than a phone thanks to its tablet-esque look. So, can this product be Verizon’s answer to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2? Here is a comparison between the two devices.

Ergonomics & Design

The Intuition measures 139.6 mm in length, 90.4 mm in breadth and 8.5 mm in thickness. The device weighs around 168 g. The Galaxy Note 2’s footprint measures 151.1 * 80.5 mm. The Note 2 weighs around 183 g and is 9.4 mm thick. The Intuition sports a HD-IPS LCD display of 5 inches and a resolution of 768 * 1024 pixels. The 4:3 aspect ratio screen of the LG Intuition provides a different take on mobile computing. The Note 2 features a screen with resolution of 720 * 1280 pixels spread over a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 267 ppi and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2.

OS

The phones run on Android platform. However, the versions are different. While the Note 2 runs the Jelly Bean v4.1.1, the Intuition is running the relatively older Ice Cream Sandwich. The Intuition is powered by a quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset processor clocked at 1.3 GHz. The Note 2 on the other hand is driven by an efficient quad core ARM Cortex A9 processor packing an Exynos 4412 chipset and having a clock speed of 1.6 GHz.

Memory

The LG Intuition comes with 32 GB on internal memory along with 1 GB RAM. The Note 2 has 16/32/64 GB of internal storage space available with 2 GB RAM. However, the Intuition doesn’t have a micro SD slot while the Note 2 can accommodate 64 GB of extra memory.

Camera

The Note 2 features an 8 MP shooter in the rear with features as LED flash, autofocus, geo tagging, etc. and digital zoom of 4x. The Intuition too has an 8 MP unit in the rear having topnotch features as LED flash, geo tagging, touch focus, autofocus, etc. The phone cameras can also shoot videos at a quality of 1080p and a frame rate of 30 fps. The Note 2 has a 1.9 MP front camera while the Intuition features a 1.3 MP secondary camera.

Connectivity

The Intuition and the Note 2 are GSM and HSDPA enabled. Verizon has provided a 4G network to the Intuition via LTE. Wireless networking is enabled by Wi-Fi 802.11. The phones also have Bluetooth and micro USB port for local area connectivity. The phones have NFC chips.

Battery

The Intuition is fuelled by a Li-Po battery rated at 2080 mAh. The Note 2 is fuelled by a Li-Ion battery rated at 3100 mAh.

Price

The Note 2 is available at $ 650 without any contract. The Intuition is available at $199 from the Verizon at a two year agreement.

Wrap Up

The Intuition may not be able to beat the Galaxy Note 2. Its chances of taking on the S-Pen stylus tablet are hampered by its lack of digitizer and 4:3 aspect ratio.

LG has recently launched a monstrously specced Optimus phone – the LG Optimus G. It comes complete with a whole new level of smartphone technology. The company’s new flagship device is very impressive with its spectacular 4.7 inches WXGA, quad core processor, etc. Here is a comparison between the LG Optimus G and of the really topnotch smartphones – the HTC One X.

Ergonomics & Design:

The Optimus G measures 131.9 mm lengthwise, 68.9 mm breadthwise and 8.5 mm in thickness. The phone weighs 145 g. The One X measures 134.4 mm in length, 69.9 mm in breadth and 8.9 mm in thickness. The phone weighs 130 g. The Optimus G sports a true HD-IPS + LCD display of 4.7 inches and with a resolution of 768 * 1280 pixels and a sharpness of 318 ppi. The One X features a Super IPS LCD2 touchscreen of 4.7 inches and a resolution of 720 * 1280 pixels and a sharpness of 312 ppi. The screens are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The Optimus G is powered by LG Optimus UI v3.0 while the One X is equipped with the HTC Sense UI.

OS:

The phones are equipped with Android operating systems, the version being v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and upgradable to v4.1. The Optimus G is powered by a quad core Krait processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and with a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. The One X is driven by a quad core processor too with an Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and a clock speed of 1.5 GHz.

Memory:

The Optimus G has 32 GB internal space and 2 GB RAM. The One X has 32 GB storage too but with 1 GB RAM. Neither of the phones don’t have a micro SD slot.

Camera:

The Optimus G has a 13 MP or 8 MP primary camera (depends on the market) with features as LED flash, geo tagging, auto focus, etc. The One X has an 8 MP unit in the rear with reams of features such as LED flash, simultaneous HD video and image recording, geo tagging, etc. The phones can shoot 1080p video at a frame rate of 30 fps. They have 1.3 MP front cameras. The One X front camera can shoot 720p video.

Connectivity:

The phones have 2G and 3G networks enabled by GSM and HSDPA. They have GPRS and EDGE features as well. The phones are Wi-Fi enabled. NFC and Bluetooth options are available as well.

Battery Life:

The Optimus G has a Li-Po battery rated at 2100 mAh. The One X is fuelled by a Li-Po battery with a rating of 1800 mAh.

Price:

The One X costs around $650. The price of the LG Optimus G is not known yet.

Wrap Up:

There are hardly any phones that can survive in a spec-to-spec battle with the Optimus G. However, it is too early to call it the phone of the year. We don’t know the price yet so nothing can be predicted.
