The party had been planned ever since Liverpool last challenged for the title, but now it’s in full swing, and the guests have well and truly arrived.

As Liverpool’s best season in five years nears its completion, questions are being asked as to whether this is the start of a new era for the club, or whether it’s just the club taking advantage of a series of managerial changes amongst their top four rivals.

Sitting comfortably in the top four, few can deny the Reds deserve their current placing in the Premier League, as excitement grows on Merseyside at the prospect of hearing the famous Champions League theme under the floodlights at Anfield.

After 4 mediocre seasons without Champions League football, Brendan Rodgers’s men have stepped up a level quite dramatically, the last two seasons they finished 7th and 8th, it would be, as Brendan Rodgers has repeated on numerous occasions, ‘unprecedented’ for the club to finish this campaign as Premier League champions.

We’re at that stage in the season where we all look back at the pivotal moments of the season, whether that’s Liverpool’s 5-0 victory over Tottenham or their more recently demolitions over Arsenal and Everton and questions that were being asked of Liverpool are finally being answered.

Are Liverpool the most exciting side to watch in the Premier League this season? Arguably, after all, they are the top scorers. Do they host the Premier League’s best strike force? Without a doubt. Can Liverpool’s class of 2014 improve further? You better believe it.

Many of Liverpool’s stars of the season are yet to reach their prime. Jordan Henderson, once maligned now revered in a red shirt, is only 23 and is one of the Premier League’s, and England’s most exciting youngsters. Raheem Sterling has the world at his feet and despite being at the raw age of 19, is already being described as England’s best winger, a claim you just can’t deny.

Then there’s the small matter of the two strikers Liverpool have. Sturridge and Suarez. Sturridge, who is now seen as England’s number one striker above £300k a week Wayne Rooney, is only 24 years of age, can he, like his partner in crime become one of the best strikers in the world? Of course he can, he’s at the right club to do so.

Luis Suarez, who is undoubtedly the form player in the world at this moment in time, has only just turned 26, still a year away from when strikers reach their ‘prime’. After a turbulent summer few could predict the season the Uruguayan has had. Would Liverpool be in this position without him? You have to say no, the Premier League’s top scorer and assist maker is invaluable, the longer he stays on L4, the better the chance Liverpool have of building a Shankly-like dynasty.

As well as the players, you have the manager. Without question, Brendan Rodgers is, and has been, the Premier League Manager of the Year. There was a lot of scepticism about the Ulsterman after a turbulent first 6 months, at such a young age, there were murmurs the ‘boy’ was out of his depth. Once the summer transfer window closed, the boy became the man, and that man has given the Kop faithful a new lease of life.

He’s a man with words, a man of integrity and comparisons are being drawn with a certain Mr Bill Shankly, who spearheaded Liverpool’s most successful period in their history. It’s too early to suggest Rodgers can enjoy a similar reign at the club to that of Shankly, his successor ‘Sir’ Bob Paisley or (whisper it quietly) Sir Alex Ferguson, but the signs are there.

Of course, due to the disappointing nature of the majority of Liverpool’s recent years, the attitude of fans remains that of hope not expectation, but if ever there was an opportunity for Liverpool to return to Europe’s big table this was it. As Tottenham and Manchester United have undergone dramatic cosmetic surgery, Liverpool have woken up from a four year slumber and they are only just getting started.

Liverpool’s famous anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone claims ‘At the end of a storm, there’s a golden sky’and after recovering from the clubs darkest days, whether they win the league or not, the Liverpool fans can bask in the glory of their season, and most importantly, bring in the new sun that's rising over Anfield.

Can Glen Johnson win back his Liverpool place?

With Brendan Rodgers confirming Glen Johnson has returned to training this week, the big question will be whether or not he'll be able to win back his place in the Liverpool starting line-up.

Given the long period on the sidelines faced by the full-back, it may still be too soon for him to make a start in the Reds fixture with Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, but Rodgers has confirmed the defender is back in training and feeling close to full fitness.

“Glen has been back training,” Rodgers said in his pre-match press conference. “According to him, he has felt as good as he has done for a long time – which is great. It’s important for the team not to be relying on one player.”

Arsenal v Liverpool Betting Preview

With Liverpool set to face Arsenal in the FA Cup at the Emirates on Sunday, Josh Bradley looks at where's best for punters to place their money.

Liverpool’s assault on the Premier League title takes a back seat this week, as the Reds travel to Arsenal in the F.A Cup on Sunday.

The game comes only a fortnight after Liverpool ran out comfortable 5-1 winners at Anfield, in the league, and this has led to a rather short price for Liverpool.

Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 earlier on in the season at the Emirates, in one of very few games where Rodgers got the tactics completely wrong and allowed us to be overrun in midfield. This won’t be the case on Sunday and the bookmakers cannot split the pair, with Liverpool a best-priced 17/10, and Arsenal trading around 7/4.

These are a bit short in-terms of a value bet, so we will leave this market and concentrate on the scorers market, which is where the value really lies.

Liverpool are likely to name a very strong side, with no mid-week fixtures to concentrate on, whilst Wenger is likely to rest a few players with the Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich only three days later. This is partially the reason Liverpool are being so well backed, and it may well pay to side with the man of the moment, Steven Gerrard.

The skipper netted an injury-time penalty to secure all three points at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening, and comes into the game in inspired form, having adjusted extremely well to his new deeper role.

He still excels from set-pieces, and should he be given the freedom to attack from deep, his long shots will cause havoc all game. It always pays to stick with the form players, and 14/1 for Gerrard to net first looks large, with Suarez, Sterling and Sturridge all likely to cause the Arsenal defenders problems, which could lead to penalties.

So, take the 14/1 about Gerrard FGS, and take advantage of the 11/2 on offer with Coral, for Stevie to net any-time.

Elsewhere, the Man-of-the-Match market is one of great interest, with Luis Suarez looks great value at 15/2. If Liverpool are going to win, Suarez is going to play a major part, and with the Uruguayan being surprisingly quiet by his standards over the last few weeks, he will be looking to strike back with a bang on Sunday.

It would be fitting for Suarez to show Wenger exactly what he’s missed out on, and put in the type of performance that Liverpool fans have become so accustomed to seeing. His pace and trickery against the aging Per Mertersacker is sure to catch the eyes, and should he be able to convert one or two of his chances, the 15/2 (6/1 in places) will look massive.

The final bet to make Sunday that little bit sweeter, comes in the shape of a correct score. With the game expected to be a much tighter affair than previous encounters, there shouldn’t be too many goals in it at the very end.

Liverpool are likely to field a stronger side, and should be able to prevail after 90 minutes. However defensively, Liverpool always look prone to conceding at least one goal, so the 2-1 score-line does appeal at 10/1.

It is usually a case of ‘we’ll score more than you’, but with Rodgers paying homage to the importance of Martin Skrtel this week, the Reds will be out to show their defensive qualities, while you can guarantee going forward, Liverpool will always have a goal in them with the resurgence of the little magician Coutinho, feeding the trio of Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling.

The 10/1 does look a solid bet, and if all goes well, Gerrard will net first and then Suarez will play outstanding in a 2-1 Liverpool win, so we will end with a massive profit!

Selections:

Steven Gerrard FGS @ 14/1
Steven Gerrard any-time @ 11/2
Luis Suarez to get MOTM @ 15/2
Arsenal 1-2 Liverpool @ 10/1

View from the Opposition: Arsenal v Liverpool

With Liverpool set to face off against Arsenal in the FA Cup at the Emirates tomorrow, we caught up with the Executive Editor of The Sport Review and Arsenal fan Martin Caparrotta to get his thoughts on the fixture.

First off, you probably don’t want to be reminded about last Saturday, but what sort of impact does it have on Arsenal going into this game?

I think that result had a big impact on Wednesday, when Arsenal were very cagey and clearly nervous against Manchester United. Defensive stability has been key to Arsenal's title bid so far this season so shipping four goals in 20 minutes was obviously a shock to the system. I expect Arsenal to be much tighter at the back on Sunday, as they were against United and in the games following their 6-3 loss at City before Christmas.

Arsenal have to handle a very crowded fixture list which has included Liverpool and Manchester United, with a clash with Bayern Munich following closely after the fixture on Sunday. Will Arsene Wenger look to use the depth in his squad n Sunday?

I'd expect so. Serge Gnabry could get a run-out. Personally, I'd also give Olivier Giroud a rest as he is clearly tired and maybe throw Lukas Podolski up front.

There’s been some questions raised about Mesut Ozil’s form as of recent. Do you think it’s simply a blip in form or something more serious?

I think it's just a blip. True, he had a brilliant start and has faded in recent months, but let's not forget it's his first campaign in England. I think we won't see the best of him until next season.

Speaking of which, who do you see as Arsenal’s key players going into the game, the ones which are going to give Liverpool the most to worry about?

I expect Podolski to play and he's offers a direct threat whenever he's deployed. Gnabry's pace can be hard to contain, too, if he gets a run-out. Ozil had a good game against United and will have a point to prove after a poor showing at Anfield, where he was caught in possession at least twice in the build-up to Liverpool goals.

And which players in the Liverpool squad are you most worried about coming up against?

Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have been brilliant this season and the fact that they have a combined 39 league goals between them tells you all you need to know really. I've been impressed by Sturridge's finishing, and Suarez can create magic at any moment. That absurd turn and shot that hit the post against Arsenal on Saturday is a perfect example!

He may not have managed a goal against Arsenal in either of the Reds Premier League fixtures, but given Luis Suarez’s form, are you upset you missed out on him in the summer?

I think it's not unrealistic to say that with Suarez, Arsenal would be well on course to wrapping up the Premier League title this season. So from that perspective, yes. Any team would be improved by his presence and he looks to have got his head down and steered clear of controversy this season, too.

The Gunners may not have put in the best performances against Liverpool and United, but you must still be happy with the way the season is going so far? Do you think you have enough to win the title?

Absolutely. Most Arsenal fans will feel disappointed by the recent results, but when you look at the bigger picture, it's clear progress has been made from last season. As supporters, that's what you want to see. Sometimes you need to take a step back to realise you've taken a step forwards. That said, nine years without a trophy doesn't sound great.

What do you think of Liverpool’s season so far? Are they title contenders or just battling to get a top four place?

It's in their own hands. They're four points off the top of the table with 12 games to go and are competing with teams who will now also have to contend with the Champions League. They also have the advantage of welcoming City and Chelsea to Anfield, so in my opinion they're right in the mix. Whether they can show the consistency needed to actually get themselves over the line remains to be seen, but you can't say they don't have a chance.

Finally, can we have a score prediction?

3-1 to Arsenal.

You can read more from Martin on The Sport Review as well as following him on Twitter.

Rodgers targets FA Cup Final for Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers believes Liverpool have a great chance of making it to the FA Cup Final, starting with a victory over Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

Liverpool face the Gunners on the back of a close-cut victory over Fulham, in which Steven Gerrard scored a last minute penalty to give the visitors the victory at Craven Cottage.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers stated his belief that Liverpool can progress in the competition, despite the game with Arsenal undoubtedly being a tough fixture.

"It's a difficult game but we want to get to The Final, that's the key thing," Rodgers stated in his post-match press conference.

"It's an important game for us and we had an outstanding performance against them [on Saturday]. The lowest price of the bunch is 3/1 (0-0), so if you feel confident enough to stick your neck out, there will be a decent pay-out if you can call it.

With Suarez, Sturridge and Sterling linking up so well as a front-three, you would have to expect Liverpool to net at least once in the first-half, and with Fulham offering so little threat going forward, it may well pay to side with a-to-nil score-line.

The score-line was 3-0 in Liverpool’s favour at half-time when the sides met earlier this season at Anfield, however it will be a different proposition at Craven Cottage, and for this reason the 2-0 score-line appeals at 6/1 with various firms.

In terms of scorers, there will be very few looking past the elite trio of Suarez, Sturridge and the in-form Sterling. However it’s Philipe Coutinho at 10/1 with Paddy Power that really appeals, with the Brazilian magician likely to be given the space he needs to work in. His dribbling skills are second to none, and with tight marking expected on the front-three in particular, Coutinho’s mazy runs from deep may be the key to unlocking the defence. He has come very close in recent weeks, and to coin the phrase, he is ‘due a goal’.

There is a clear disparity between bookmakers, with the majority of the firms offering 7/1, however if you bet with Paddy, 10/1 seems a fair price, and the 4/1 for Coutinho to net in a Liverpool win at Ladbrokes is another solid bet.

The final selection carries on from the ‘strong start’ routine that Liverpool have adopted this season. The Reds have scored 63 goals already in the league, but have only managed to net more than once in the second half, on four occasions (Spurs, Stoke, West Ham and Norwich). This leads us to believe that the first 45 minutes is set to be the highest scoring half of the game, and at 11/5 with William Hill, this looks set to be a valuable long-term bet.

Selections:

Liverpool to be leading 2-0 at HT @ 6/1 (Various)
Coutinho to score first @ 10/1 (Paddy Power)
Coutinho to score in a Liverpool win @ 4/1 (Ladbrokes)
First Half to be the highest scoring @ 11/5 (William Hill)

Liverpool's youngsters will fire them to the Champions League and beyond

As soon as the final whistle was blown at Anfield on Saturday, along with the euphoria came the realisation. Liverpool have finally arrived.

After a five year absence it seems more likely than not that Liverpool will once again have the famous Champions League anthem reverberating around L4 next season. This class of 14' does just have masses of ability, the potential is there for all to see. For both the Everton and Arsenal hammerings, Liverpool fielded the same XI.

That XI cost an approximate total of £75 million. £75 million, approximately same amount Manchester United spent on Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata.

Three Academy products featured prominently, one loanee, and a free agent alongside 6 cash transferred players made Liverpool into an intimidating outfit.

You look at some of the transfer fees, Liverpool will be angered if a bid they received for Luis Suarez wasn't four times what they paid for him in 2011 (£22.8 million). Daniel Sturridge cost £12 million, a gamble according to the 'all knowing presence' that is Sir Alex Ferguson. With 29 goals in 36 games he's more than paid of his fee and at the age of 24 hasn't even reached his prime, which is a scary thought!

Raheem Sterling has been a revelation and could arguably be England's best winger, at 19 that's some achievement, he too is destined for greatness and he's under the right manager to achieve that. Phillipe Coutinho has often blown hot and cold but since the Everton game he's been more like the sunny sands of Spain rather than the unwelcoming nature of the Antarctica. Costing £8.5 million and at 21 years of age, he's another with the world at his feet.

Jordan Henderson came under much scrutiny during his first year and half in the famous red shirt but ever since he's been a leading contender to start in England's midfield in Rio, he still can improve too and will no doubt pay off his transfer fee. John Flanagan has been exceptional since his return to the first team and if he continues in this vein he can start purchasing his flip flops and factor 50.

The most encouraging thing for Liverpool fans at the moment is this crop of players doesn't just have high levels of ability, the potential is staggering and with the side already challenging in the upper echelon of the Premiership, the future certainly looks bright for the Class of 2014,

Video: Benayoun winner for Liverpool against Fulham

Gerrard set up the first goal of the game, swinging a free-kick into the box, which Martin Skrtel turned home to give the hosts an early lead.

A corner, again taken by Gerrard, picked out Skrtel again, with the Slovakian heading in once more to double the Reds scoreline.

Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge provided an additonal two goals in what was a world-class first twenty minutes for Liverpool.

It was up to youngster Sterling to finish off the Gunners with a strike early on in the second-half, before Mikel Arteta turned home a penalty to give the away fans at least one thing to cheer.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, skipper Gerrard claimed the performance was in the top three he's ever been a part of in a red shirt.

"That is right up there. We have absolutely demolished a top team there from start to finish. I am trying to think back of a performance, especially in the first half, that I can remember in the last 15 years.

"Maybe one or two in the Champions League got close, but that was as explosive as it gets. That's definitely in the top three performances I have been involved in.

"You are talking about a side that is top of the league with world-class players, ones who are worth £42million; Jack Wilshere, one of the country's big hopes who we are looking to perform at a World Cup, and Santi Cazorla."

The England and Liverpool captain went on to demand focus on the Reds next game, an away trip to Fulham, highlighting the fact the Reds were disappointing against West Brom after a huge win over Everton.

"I think the thing after a performance like that is: can we motivate ourselves to get close to producing something similar against Fulham?" the 33-year-old added.

"If we do, we will do the same to Fulham. But that is the dangerous thing. We performed fantastically against Everton and then slipped up against West Brom having taken the lead. We should have seen that game out.

"You can set markers and you can have one-off games but it means nothing if you don't continue to play well and get something from it at the end of the season.

"We aren't going to look back at the end of the season and think 'How good were we against Arsenal?' if we never got the top four. We can enjoy this but we have got to move on quickly and try to get three points against Fulham."

Should Ian Ayre come under scrutiny after Liverpool's poor transfer window?

The transfer window has come and gone with no new arrivals at Anfield, but should the lack of fresh blood bring the position of managing director Ian Ayre under scrutiny?

The January transfer window saw Mohammed Salah, a long-term target for the Reds move to Chelsea as the Reds refused to meet the asking price set out by FC Basel, with a move for Yevhen Konoplyanka deteriorating on deadline day.

Its become a familar story at Anfield as of recent, with the Liverpool also missing out on other targets such as Diego Costa, Willian, Clint Demsey and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all alluding the Reds in recent season.

To make things worse for Liverpool, a number of these targets ended up at rival clubs, with Willian and Salah both now plying their trade at Chelsea whilst the failed bid to bring Dempsey to Anfield saw him head to Tottenham Hotspur.

Some highly respected Liverpool fans have suggested Liverpool's continued frustration in the transfer market should bring Ian Ayre under scrutiny, but for me that's a shortsighted view.

Ayre was appointed managing director in the March of the 2010/11 season, moving up from commercial director and replacing Christian Purslow.

In that season the club revenues totaled £183.6 million, with £77.4 million of that coming from commercial deals, £65.3 million from broadcasting rights and £45.3 million from match day.

Liverpool's commercial revenue for that year was higher than that of Inter Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal, all of whom finished above them in terms of total revenue and all had Champions League football that season, unlike Liverpool.

In the 2011/12 season Liverpool's revenues rose again under Ayre's stewardship, rising to £188.7 million despite the Reds still not featuring in the Champions League.

Liverpool's main revenues once again came from the area in which Ayre has the most expertise, commercial, with the club generating £80.2 million from commercial activities. Broadcasting revenue for the year was down to £63.3 million whilst match day revenues increased to £45.2 million.

Commercial revenues were again higher than those of Arsenal, AC Milan and Chelsea, all of whom were in the Champions League, whilst Manchester City's commercial revenue was only bolstered by lucrative deals with Abu Dhabi based partners.

The trend continues into the latest financial reports from Deloitte, covering 2012/13, with Liverpool generating £206.2 million, with commercial revenue again making a huge jump up to £97.7 million, accounting for 47% of the Reds total revenues (up from 42% the previous two seasons).

Commercial revenue was the main driver in the Reds revenue growth, with match day revenues (£44.6m) and broadcast revenues £63.9 million, only seeing minor increases.

Chelsea, Arsenal, Juventus, AC Milan and Dortmund all had higher total revenues and were Champions League participants, yet Liverpool earned more commercial revenue than all of them, whilst City and PSG, another two clubs higher in-terms of total revenue, both only had higher commercial revenues due to their deals with Middle Eastern sponsorship partners close to their owners.

The lesson to be learned? Ian Ayre has done a good job of keeping Liverpool financially competitive despite their absence from the Champions League, with the improved financial performance undoubtedly helping with securing the key signings Liverpool have made in recent seasons.

Does this completely absolve Ian Ayre of blame? Far from it. Liverpool need to be doing a better job of securing their key targets, especially when failed deals lead to players heading to rival clubs, jeopardising the Reds Champions League chances.

There's a desperate need for a Chief Executive Officer at Anfield who can take charge of some of the many elements of running the football club which Ian Ayre is currently trying to juggle. Then, and only then, will Liverpool start to see an improvement in their transfer market dealings.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.theanfieldopinion.co.uk/2014/02/ian-ayre-liverpool-transfers.html' title='Should Ian Ayre come under scrutiny after Liverpool's poor transfer window? Of course, we’ll play a part in it because we’re professional and we want to fight to finish as high as we possibly can.

“There are six points between us and Chelsea, there’s still a lot to play for and we’ll be fighting right to the very end.

“But if I’m asked to give an honest answer then I would say that this year is probably too soon for us.”

West Brom 1-1 Liverpool: A good point, or a pointless point?

After the Lord mayors show. That's one of many negative ways to describe the 1-1 draw away at West Brom yesterday, but the debate across various social media has been whether it's a good point or not.

Granted West Brom are struggling, but this is the Premier League where anyone can beat anyone. Add to that the new(ish) manager effect and an (sometimes) enthusiastic home support and you have a tricky away fixture, just as Liverpool found out yesterday.

Before the game, a draw wasn't exactly an ideal result but it's one that would've been satisfactory. After the game however, some fans for some reason were left inconsolable.

After taking the lead through Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool never really capitalised on their position and surrendered the lead through a mistake from cult hero Kolo Toure. It's one of those games where a point before is worse than a point afterwards given the in game situation.

There are a few ways you can analyse the importance (or lack of) of the point yesterday. You could see it as getting a point when playing poorly, after all 1 is better than none. It could be you point to a solitary defensive mistake(again) being the difference to an excellent if undeserved away victory. You could obviously be a pessimist and suggest that's it for Liverpool's Champions League hopes despite sitting in 4th position, yes some people have actually said such things.

Most agree it's 2 points dropped given Liverpool took the lead and even more so with Everton clambering points back after the Demolition Derby.

One thing is for sure, if Liverpool finish the season 4th either by a point or goal difference, it will be seen as a vital point, but with some massive games on the horizon, 3 points certainly would've been appreciated, to help welcome the golden sky at the end of a long, turbulent storm.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.theanfieldopinion.co.uk/2014/02/a-good-point-or-pointless-point.html' title='West Brom 1-1 Liverpool: A good point, or a pointless point? Liverpool looked dangerous and dominant, even with only 39% of the possession.

It's a game of two halves

Daniel Sturridge put in a sublime performance for the Reds in the opening 45 minutes, firing home twice within the space of three minutes just after the half hour mark.

Yet the former Chelsea man may want to forget the second-half, with the forward first missing a penalty won by Raheem Sterling before missing an ideal chance to either fire home for his hat-trick or play-in Suarez.

Glen Johnson may struggle to get back in the team

Opinions have been divided among Liverpool fans on Johnson since his arrival at the club, with the full-back often impressing going forward but looking dubious at the back.

And now he may face stiff competition for his place from Jon Flanagan, who put in a superb display against the Blues, comfortably keeping a handle on both Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar.

Back to the future? The Steven Gerrard Conundrum

As Steven Gerrard's career has developed at Liverpool, the general consensus was that Liverpool relied on him too heavily, that they were a one man team.

Now Liverpool's Number 8 is entering the twilight stage of his career and the tide has turned, with latest suggestions pointing towards a possible exclusion from the team.

Under current manager Brendan Rodgers, Gerrard has been deployed in a deeper role, orchestrating Liverpool's attacking play rather than the box to box forays that made him one of the best central midfielders in the game.

Even more recently, he has been the deepest of Liverpool's midfielders, playing the anchoring role mastered by the likes of Claude Makelele and Javier Mascherano. During those two games, Liverpool shipped 5 goals against lower league opposition, the latter of the two (2-2 v Aston Villa at Anfield) even prompted a stinging self-analysis from the man himself.

"I think when the Manager watches the video of the game I might be a bit further forward in future, or even on the bench" said Gerrard.

With Liverpool's defensive weaknesses coinciding with an upturn in form for Liverpool's tireless midfielder Jordan Henderson, questions are being asked as to whether the man who is arguably Liverpool's greatest ever player no longer deserves a place in a more dynamic and mobile Liverpool midfield.

Across the years Gerrard has been used in the majority of outfield positions available, beginning his career in the right back slot before moving into a central midfield role in Gerard Houllier's later team selections. A new more successful era followed under Rafa Benitez and Gerrard was often deployed wide right, despite initial scepticism from fans and player himself.

He occupied all four positions in the midfield under Benitez before stepping into the Advanced Playmaker role behind Fernando Torres in what was the most feared partnership since the Dalglish and Rush days.

An upturn in personal performances, goalscoring form and on the pitch success for Liverpool means Gerrard is seen still, 5 years on, an attacking midfielder. He has the ability, the intelligence and creativity, but the lack of pace is what worries Brendan Rodgers.

"I think Steven has the attributes to drop back towards a defensive position to prolong his career."

But does he have the defensive steel to protect a fragile Liverpool back 5? The stats suggest not...

With a 47% Tackle success rate, it's hard to see how Gerrard can play the deep midfield role. This Liverpool defence needs protection and if Gerrard is going to play an orchestrator role from deep, then he needs a anchorman next to him to protect the defence.

Let's compare Gerrard's stats to those who mastered his new position in the past.

When Claude Makelele started at Chelsea, he brought a reputation from La Liga that he was a destroyer, and the stats backed him up.

An incredible tackle success % of 78% (www.skysports.com) shows how that role should be played. Despite the role changing into a more technical dynamic role, you still need to be able to tackle, to break up a counter attack for example, and with Gerrard in that role, Liverpool have been left wide open and if it wasn't for the SAS partnership, they'd have gained 0 points from 2 winnable games.

Although Rodgers refers to this role as the 'Regista' or the 'Quarterback', an already weak backline requires constant protection in the form of an Anchorman. Gerrard, playing as Liverpool's deepest midfielder has to occupy both in a two man midfield, and early indications show he isn't capable of that.

With Lucas missing another 8 weeks, Joe Allen is the natural replacement, with his harassment, tenacity and technical ability he has what Rodgers is looking for from the 'Gerrard' role. So where does that leave the captain?

With Sterling on form, an unbreakable SAS partnership and a never ending battery in Jordan Henderson, it seems to be a shootout between Phillipe Coutinho, who despite suffering from a lull in form, remains Liverpool's creative lynchpin and Liverpool's captain.

What does the future hold for Steven Gerrard? The prospect of him no longer gracing the Fields of Anfield Road grows by the day, possibly signalling the end of an era for a unique talent.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.theanfieldopinion.co.uk/2014/01/back-to-future-steven-gerrard-conundrum.html' title='Back to the future? We don’t want to lose and that is very important, especially at home.

“Other teams will make errors. We just need to maintain our focus and believe in ourselves. The harsh reality is Liverpool wouldn't have gained the positive results they have in any of those 4 games, they'd have buckled under pressure.

There is something about this side, there has been since being dumped out of the Europa League last February. With no distractions, Sturridge and Coutinho adding quality to a side which had an on form No.7, Liverpool have suffered a prolonged purple patch, and long may it continue.

Since the Zenit knockout, Liverpool have lost just 1 of 15 Premier League games, a 3-1 reverse to a rejuvenated Southampton.

It's clear that being knocked out of Europe improved the sides fortunes and with no Europe this season and the squad winning without playing their best, there are plenty of reasons for Liverpool for Liverpool to be optimistic.

Liverpool are top of the league, but it's no time to get carried away

With three wins out of three, Liverpool proudly sit top of the Barclays Premier League, cue the knee jerk reactions.

A top four challenge was a must this season and after spending wisely (Moses, Sakho and Ilori included), there was cautious optimism in the air for the Stoke game.

The Redmen scraped through thanks to a superb strike by Daniel Sturridge, one major talking point after that game was the steely, gritty attribute added to the Liverpool groove.

A tricky away game against the resurgent Aston Villa followed. Two wins out of two in games Liverpool would've drawn in recent campaigns, but there's something in the air.

A topsy turvy encounter followed against Notts County, a similar performance again with style and substance in the 1st half followed by steel and grit after being reduced to 10 men when the League One side were in cruise control.

Bigger tests were on the horizon and they don't come much bigger than the defending champions at home. Another first half goal from Daniel Sturridge, another backs against the walls 2nd half, another 3 points, another reason to be optimistic.

During last season, pundits and rival fans questioned whether Liverpool had the steel to add to their style. Three 1-0 wins this season and those doubts have been dispensed, temporarily.

To be realistic, honest and somewhat depressive, Liverpool won't be at the top for too long and at a time when social media is dominated by knee jerk reactions, Brendan Rodgers has done the right thing to calm any talk of a title push.

In all fairness, there shouldn't be any title talk, we finished 7th last year, the aim is to challenge for the Champions League in the next 2 years, a few wins shouldn't change that. We've had our ups so far but we will also have our downs, and the longer we feel on cloud nine, the worse those downs will feel.

There are plenty of reasons to be positive though, unbeaten in 12, mostly without the maverick that is Luis Suarez, Lucas is seemingly back to his best, Sturridge is firing and the defence seems settled. The signs are pointing up up and up for Liverpool, but that's no reason to cast unrealistic targets on a season that already had so much counting on it.

Spurs have strengthened and are comprehensive favourites to finish 4th, but with Arsenal scared of putting their hands in their pockets Liverpool have a real chance to capitalise, to get back to a place where they rightfully belong.

It's two weeks until Liverpool next play, so make the most of Liverpool sitting on their 'perch', because the chances are, somebody will come knock us off again, but now we are in our best position to fight back.

A new dawn is rising at Anfield, after all, at the end of a storm, there's a golden sky.

Why our latest failure in the market shouldn't overshadow a fine opening day victory

As the new Premier League season began at Anfield on Saturday, optimism filled the stands after a solid pre season, as well as the 'impending' capture of Anzhi winger Willian.

BT Sport's Jake Humphreys asked Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers about the transfer, the smile on the Ulstermans face told all that was needed to be told, we thought.

The manager has been crying out for a match winner to turn those niggly 0-0 draws into a 1/2-0 win. Willian was the third attempt at such a signing and the prospect of the Brazilian lining up alongside Coutinho Sturridge and Suarez whet the appetite of the Kop faithful.

It seemed like another 0-0 draw was on the cards after a willing first half before Daniel Sturridge unleashed an effort that not even Man of the Match Asmir Begovic could stop.

1-0 Liverpool, the optimism, the expectations lifted up a notch. This was the sort of game Liverpool would've drawn last season, so to escape (just) with a victory left the crowd relieved and pleased, this being Liverpool's first opening day victory since August 2008, the season Liverpool finished 2nd....

As fans reflected on an impressive performance first up, the thought of adding Willian to the line up made for a frightening prospect. The stadium was buzzing, fans were expressing their delight on social media but little did we know such jubilation would soon be long forgotten.

Tottenham entered the race for Willian, having trumped Liverpool on both Dempsey and Sigurdsson, suddenly Kopites realised their dream may never become reality.

As days went by and there was no confirmation from Liverpool, Willian and Tottenham, Liverpool fans feared the worst. The worst is what followed. Euphoria turned into anger in the space of 48 hours as Tottenham were in the driving seat, and with money to throw around, the pipe dream was no more.

Fans criticised the club for not overspending but after being humiliated in previous windows you can't blame them for being hesitant, but now it appears in the transfer market at least, the club cant do anything right. But why should that spoil a decent opening day result and replace the euphoria felt with the realisation that Liverpool are no longer top dogs.

The squad we have is good enough to challenge for Champions League football, added additions would've been a bonus but we should support who we have, especially when our targets join our rivals. Plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the upcoming season, don't let transfer news ruin that.

Does Suarez deserve a tad more respect?

After all the Uruguayan has said and done in the past 2 and a half years, you could be mistaken for thinking controversial is his middle name.

At a club with such proud traditions, fans and pundits alike have commented on how Suarez's actions (Racism/Diving/Biting) would have messrs Shankly and Paisley turning in their graves.

This is all before his rather public and persistent outbursts this summer. Many believed it was just paper talk, Arsenal can't possibly spend £40 million on one player can they?!

Whilst adamant the player isn't for sale, Rodgers echoed the fans sentiments. 'Every player has their price'. The price, in the case of Luis Suarez was believed to be £40million as stated in his contract, however, the true meaning of release clause has created an ever growing divide between player and club, with Suarez not ruling out going to court to settle the matter.

If and it's a big IF Liverpool buckle under pressure and sell to Arsenal, it would have to be for a much higher transfer fee than Real Madrid as let's face it, Arsenal are direct competition for that elusive Champions League spot, and there lies the problem.

There are three realistic outcomes to this soap opera.

He could join Arsenal for £50 million and the top 4 could be complete before the season even begins despite Liverpool splashing the cash on replacements.

He could stay on £100,000 a week, not give 100%, his price could drop and by January 2014/June 2014 it could damage team morale and the money they'd get won't be substantial enough to replace a player of such quality.

OR... Real Madrid could buy Luis Suarez after completing their world record purchase of Gareth Bale, Liverpool could strengthen without strengthening their rivals, and cause tension in the Gunners camp over lack of A-List signings.

Only one of those outcomes benefit Liverpool and in all honesty, it's the least likely. Before Suarez' latest outburst things were going swimmingly, you could believe Rodgers' comments that he understood the clubs stance and was committed if he was to stay, but now the players position is untenable, with North London a likely stopping point on this Uruguayan runaway train.

Thailand 0-3 Liverpool: Coutinho on target as Reds cruise to victory

Liverpool finished their pre-season tour with a comfortable 3-0 win over Thailand at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.

Second half goals from Iago Aspas and Steven Gerrard added to Philippe Coutinho's wonderful solo effort in the first period gave the Reds victory and ensured they rounded off their record breaking tour in fine style.

Brendan Rodgers had hinted in the build-up that he would name what he believed to be his strongest available XI for the match and the starting line-up certainly looked a side capable of starting the Premier League with Stoke next month.

Rodgers' side started brightly with Fabio Borini full of running and being picked out in good positions numerous times in the opening 10 minutes. The man picking him out more often than not was Coutinho. Liverpool's number 10 was unquestionably the stand out player in the early stages, indeed throughout the whole game, and capped his fine start with the breakthrough goal on 17 minutes.

The Brazilian nipped in to steal the ball 25 yards from goal before beating two Thai defenders, one of them suffering the embarrassment of being outfoxed three separate times in a matter of seconds, and rolling the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Liverpool took their foot off the pedal for a short period after the goal and Thailand forward Teerasil Dangda fired narrowly wide with keeper Simon Mignolet looking beaten midway through the half. The hosts went close again 10 minutes before the break, this time the Reds' Belgian stopper was forced into action to keep out a stinging drive at full stretch.

That scare jolted the tourists into action and the composure shown at the beginning of the half returned as it drew to a close - a lovely passing move saw the ball drilled across the face of the Thailand goal but just too high for any of the onrushing players to convert.

The Reds began the second half positively and soon doubled their lead through the Spaniard Aspas. The recent signing from Celta Vigo expertly collected Coutinho's through ball before calmly slotting the ball home. His third goal of the pre-season since joining the club.

Liverpool felt they should have had a penalty five minutes later as Borini was clipped as he bore down on goal but the referee waved away the protests. It was of little consequence, however, and a third goal wasn't long in coming.

A Thailand attack broke down allowing Joe Allen to drive forward through the centre of the increasingly cut up pitch and release Aspas. The forward opted not to take the shot on as the goalkeeper and a Thailand defender closed in, instead laying the ball back for his Gerrard. The captain kept his nerve to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and defenders into the unguarded net.

Shortly afterwards the crowd were on their feet again, this time to welcome Luis Suarez to the pitch. The Uruguayan replaced Borini and almost added a fourth for the Reds twenty minutes from the end, heading Gerrard free-kick against the underside of the crossbar when, perhaps, he should have scored.

Liverpool continued to press for another goal and it was Gerrard who came closest to providing it. Having had a good opportunity saved, the England skipper chipped the ball left-footed beyond the helpless Thai keeper only to see it bounce back off the bar.

That was how it finished and Brendan Rodgers and his squad will now return to Merseyside ahead of Steven Gerrard's testimonial match next Saturday on the back of four straight pre-season wins without conceding a goal.

Liverpool [4-3-3]: Mignolet; Johnson, Toure (Skrtel), Agger, Enrique; Lucas, Allen (Alberto), Gerrard; Aspas (Ibe), Coutinho (Henderson), Borini (Suarez).

Man of the match: Philippe Coutinho
