Say hello to 2012 and to Animail 1.6 with Push Notifications! Animail now notifies you when a new email or direct message arrives. If a message is new AND important (=highlighted), Animail will even let you know with a bark. A badge on the app icon shows you the number of unread messages in your accounts.

Animail now also offers search when browsing. No need to exit the app for ad-hoc web searches any more. Just drag the search field from the top of the webpage you are viewing.

We hope you enjoy Animail's new tricks and we wish you a Happy Year 2012!

Animail 1.5.1 update

A new update for our little dog puppy just hit the App Store. So, what's new in Animail 1.5.1?
1) New Twitter Authentication:
Triggered by changes on Twitter's side, we had to change our Twitter authentication procedure. When you first start the new version of Animail, you will be prompted to re-add your Twitter accounts. If you chose not to re-add them before the end of June, Direct Messages will stop working in Animail.
2) Animail can now resolve Twitter's t.co URLs and display linked images and videos in the file view. Yay!
3) GMail accounts: As described in the previous blog post, Animail no longer fetches the 'All Mail' folder.
Enjoy!

Animail no longer fetches GMail's 'All Mail' folder

We changed the behavior of Google Mail accounts in Animail:
Animail will no longer import the 'All Mail' folder - a change that was requested by many of you.
As a consequence, the next 'refresh' will take longer, as Animail does a 'full sync' of all GMail folders except the 'All Mail' folder. But you don't need to wait until Animail is done fetching all the news: feel free to leave the app and check back later, it won't interrupt the process.

Animail 1.5 just went live at the App Store

It's been a while since our last version 1.0.4., but now we make a big jump straight to version 1.5:

First of all let's address the most frequently requested feature (by a wide margin), the 'Full Tweet View':

Animail now shows you the full text of a tweet in the timeline. And not only tweets, but also emails now let you peek inside straight from the timeline. No need to open each tweet individually to read it. Here is Animail's new timeline:

But that's not all. With version 1.5 we introduce 'Link Preview'. This feature makes reading tweets much more fun than in other Twitter clients:

When you tap on a tweet to open it, the content of the link now automatically loads and displays in the background. We call it a preview, but it's essentially more than that: it's the real thing, you can start browsing right there. We've used this for a while now and we hope you will love link preview as much as we do. This is how it looks:

Apart from those two major new features, we also made it easier to highlight emails. When you tap & hold an email, a popup menu appears offering to either highlight or darken all emails from that sender. That's it. Starring also works this way now.

We hope you like those new things in Animail, we'd love to hear what you think!

Animail 1.5 is available as a free upgrade for existing users or at $1.99 (1.59 €) for new users. Enjoy!

Our 1.5 beta is coming to an end and as usual we want to hand our beta users a small (really!) survey to give us some plus or minus points on what we've done. Please share your experience here:
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QJR8YST

(Hint: If you couldn't join the beta test, but want to take the survey to give us your Animail feedback, just note that in the 'anything else we need to know?' field at the end. Thanks!)

Animail is Retina ready and now supports Yahoo!Mail accounts

Our second update of Animail just went live on the App Store.

Animail now shines on the gorgeous new iPhone 4 Retina Display. We have redone all the UI elements for the high resolution screen.

Plus Yahoo!Mail users rejoice! We taught Animail a new trick: he now knows how to fetch the news from Yahoo!Mail accounts.

What's new in version 1.0.2:

Enhanced UI for Retina Display of iPhone 4

Added Yahoo!Mail support

Multitasking Support: Sending messages continues after the user switches to another app in iOS4

Changes in the iPhone's address book are now immediately reflected in Animail's contact list

Fixed: in some cases a single message was added multiple times to the timeline when refreshing

Animail dresses up for iPhone 4

After three days of work, we've finished redoing all custom UI elements of Animail for the new, gorgeous retina display of iPhone 4.

Judging from what is preinstalled on the showcase iPhone 4s at the Apple Store in Munich, not so many apps seem to be ready for the 960x640 display yet.
We would have loved to test the update on a real device but for now the iPhone Simulator remains our only choice as we're stuck on a huge waiting list to get our shiny new gadgets from Deutsche Telekom.
Can't wait to see the new polish on the real thing!

Version 1.0.1 fixes the following bugs:

Images in the preview are no longer scaled up

The timeline correctly displays icons if there are multiple address book entries for the same email address

Crash during icon loading because of call to already deallocated object

Crash when icon loading is interrupted

Our little doggy made his appearance on the App Store today. And you can tell by the look on his face that he's pretty happy about it. So are we.
But even if he is happy there, you may pick him up and take him home on your iPhone anyway. He'll love to play fetch with you all the time and we're sure he'll get a nice new home at your place.

Introducing Animail

Introducing Animail: Seize your Inbox!

New iPhone app lets users browse e-Mail and Twitter accounts in a single timeline and makes it easy to uncover what is important - now available at the App Store

(Munich, 14 June 2010) Today, sixtyten GmbH, headquartered in Munich, Germany, releases its Animail iPhone app. Animail is a social networking app that lets iPhone and iPod touch users browse, read and manage messages from different e-mail and Twitter accounts in one single timeline.

The app allows syncing with multiple existing e-mail accounts which support the IMAP protocol and one or more Twitter accounts. The message timeline is compiled from these accounts and can be filtered by person via an automatically generated contact list. An image viewer lets the user browse and view images and PDFs attached to e-mails or linked to in tweets.

To facilitate information retrieval and reduce maintenance effort by the user, Animail works without folders. “We want to help the customer cope with an ever-growing inflow of e-mails and communication from social networks”, comments Florian Prabst, co-founder and Managing Partner of sixtyten GmbH, and adds: “With Animail we built an app which is easy to use, but at the same time provides tools to structure personal online communication in a better, an easier way.”

Additional features of Animail include:

- Messages from friends and family are highlighted in the timeline. This allows identification of personal communication at a glance.

- A simple starring mechanism makes it possible to mark and later retrieve messages for reading, responding or as a ToDo list.

- Major webmail services like Googlemail, AOL and others can be added in just one easy step - no server configuration needed.

“Animail keeps everything in sync with your Desktop e-mail client or webmail service. All the changes you make - like starring or deleting a message - are immediately synced with your existing accounts”, co-founder and Managing Partner Thomas Krammer notes.

The Animail app is available at the App Store at an introductory offer price of $1.99 (€1.59). Customers who purchase at the introductory offer price are eligible for a free upgrade to the next release. Features planned for the next release of the app include Facebook integration.

The app works with IMAP-enabled e-mail accounts on all versions of iPhone and iPod touch. A network connection is required for syncing.

About sixtyten:

Let's see what we can find out about how people use our app and what they like most (and least)... actually pretty exciting after months of development and only a maximum of two opinions on how to do things. Now we get a couple more opinions and I'm curious what the differences and similarities will be.

AdMob Smartphone Metrics January 2010

Data from a survey that AdMob conducted in February 2010 among smartphone users, paired with their data from ad requests:
- iPod touch users rank first in mobile downloads with 12 apps per month. But only 35% of iPod touch users purchase at least one app per month. (compared to 50% of iPhone users)- This is apparently due to skewed demographics, with 78% of iPod touch users being 24 or younger.
- Daily app usage is at amazing 100 minutes for the iPod touch, 25% more than iPhone or Android users. If I would have to guess, the Facebook app gets a large amount of this airtime.
That's impressive. Lot of potential for... well, free apps. Maybe also ad-based free apps, judging from the request numbers, especially in the US and UK. Regrettably, I can't figure out if in-app purchases were included in the metrics...
(The report can be downloaded at http://metrics.admob.com)

(see our first blog post to start from the beginning of our mass market encryption journey)

Good news everyone! We have received our CCATS number from the DOC on Friday and are now officially allowed to sell our (upcoming) app to all App Store countries. Hooray!

When we started the process, we would have loved to have such a template, so we decided to share our Letter of Explanation. The LoE covers the questions that our Apple contact told us to use for our case. Your case might be different, so please don't just copy & paste, you probably need to make changes for your app. But we hope to at least provide you with a starting point...

Encryption is used to secure the transfer of personal communication (<KIND OF DATA>) and authentication information (<KIND OF DATA>) between the iPhone App and a server used for processing and synchronizing.

(4) For mass market review requests, describe specifically to whom and how the product is being marketed and state how this method of marketing and other relevant information (e.g., cost of product and volume of sales) are described by the Cryptography Note (Note 3 to Category 5, Part 2).

The product is being marketed through the iTunes App Store and therefore generally available to the public. There will be a marketing website at <WEBSITE> that gives further information and support for end users. This marketing website also links to the iTunes App Store where the App can be purchased. Cryptography Note’s List of Controlled Items (g) applies.

(5) Is any “encryption source code” being provided (shipped or bundled) as part of this offering? If yes, is this source code publicly available source code, unchanged from the code obtained from an open source web site, or is it proprietary “encryption source code?”

No encryption source code is being provided.

(b) State that a duplicate copy has been sent to the ENC Encryption Request Coordinator.

A duplicate copy has been sent to the ENC.

Quite a while since I last updated you guys on this export encryption thing. Simple reason: we're in the process and it takes 30 days. Which are not over yet. And I guess it's good news if you don't get messages from the government while your application is pending. I didn't hear anything from Apple either, so there's nothing much to report.
So how have you guys been doing? Did anyone make any different experience or got different answers or additional insight?
Would be great if you would share them via the comments!
Thanks!

One more thing... on encryption export compliance for iPhone apps

Let me add an important thing to the previous posts (see our first blog post to start from the beginning):

Apple offers a three-step approval that allows you to start selling your application on the iTunes App Store (to limited markets) even before you went through the whole review and approval process with the Government.

Here it is:

If you confirm to Apple that you agree to go through with the CCATS review process, they offer:

1) To allow sales in the U.S. and Canada immediately. For that, first uncheck all the other countries in iTunesConnect (Manage your Application -> Edit Information -> Pricing). Btw. that's 75 clicks, folks. There is no 'uncheck all' button...

2) Now to the most important part of this post: upon receipt of your CCATS application by the Bureau of Information Security, Apple allows sale in the following 34 additional countries:

Australia Austria Belgium Bulgaria Cyprus

Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France

Germany Greece Hungary Iceland Ireland

Italy Japan Latvia Lithuania Luxembourg

Malta Netherlands New Zealand Norway Poland

Portugal Romania Slovakia Slovenia Spain

Sweden Switzerland Turkey United Kingdom

That is BEFORE the approval of the Government, which should save you at least 30 days in the process. And I would say that is a significant amount of countries (and potential customers) that you can sell to prior to approval.

3) When you have got approval and therefore received your CCATS number, Apple will allow worldwide sales. (or to all countries your CCATS allows you to sell to)

iPhone Encryption Export Compliance for Apps making HTTPS (TLS) Connections - Continued

We just received an answer from Apple regarding our inquiry about whether our iPhone app requires encryption export approval because we use https connections to a webserver. (see our first blog post)

The short (and depressingly definitive) answer is: YES. We have to go through the Government review, just because we use a https connection.
Our contact at Apple replied today that she double checked with the Government: they confirm that "sending information over https is forcing the data to go through a secure channel from SSL, therefore it falls under the U.S. Government requirement for a CCATS review and approval."
As simple as that. She also added that she asked if our type of data (private communication / messages) would fall under a new exception category, but "unfortunately it does not."
So it looks like we've got to go through a process that will take at least a month, probably significantly longer.
The only relief that Apple can offer is that if you agree (in written) to go through with the CCATS process and you've already submitted your application to the Government, Apple lets you start selling your app in the U.S. and Canada, adding more countries in a second step and finally opening all for sale when approval is obtained.
Again, I have to say that Apple (and the Sr. Export Compliance Specialist dealing with us there) always offers support in every way she can. Very helpful, very good service! I suspect it won't be the same with the Department of Commerce and its Bureau of Information Security...
We'll keep you posted on our journey. At least it involves "fun" stuff that you don't usually do in your every day life like writing letters of explanation to the NSA...
