A few days ago, we told you about how Apple smartly implemented a tracking reservation system for iPhone 4S in China to prevent large purchases from scalpers who sell the device at a much higher price. Apple also stopped the sale of the device via its online store because of the huge demand.

As now the new system is in place, the company has yet again started online sales of the device and says that it will ship in March if you order it now. Customers are limited to only 2 device per person and can purchase all models including the ones in white.

Ever since the day the iPad 2 was released, the rumours were in the pipeline for the next generation iPad, which is proposed to be called the iPad 3. A report corporation claimed that they were in possession of an iPad 3 prototype. They then sent a mock-up of development pictures to a technology based site so that they could reveal more info about the potential new iPad 3.

Some additional information was found when the technology based site was examining the mock-up iPad 3. There were the numbers J1 and J2, which translates to iPad 3,1 and iPad 3,2, implying that there are 2 models set to be released. Perhaps the second model could be a 3G or 4G enabled device. Also inferred from the information was that the next iPad will house a brand new processor – which will probably be A6. The A6 processor is also proposed to be quad core. This would turn out to be more than two twice the speed of the current iPad 2. Amazing. One of the main things that people are anticipating the most is a ‘retina’ display or most notably a higher resolution will be sported by the device (see our article about the iPad 3’s potential new screen).

As for the release date of this new iPad, as always no one actually knows, but we can predict that it will be between the end of March or mid-April.

In this DevDialogue with Mike File from the “House of File”, we take a look at what it takes to have an App that is targeted at a particular niche, having multiple Apps on the App Store and deciding the pricing strategy.

1. How did you conceive the idea for the App?

A little over 3 years ago, Hurricane Ike put my house under 3 foot of water. It was such a pain finding all my insurance policies, making all the contacts to file claims, and trying to dry out and save all the records that were in my desk drawers and filing cabinets, that I swore I would find an easier way to store the information important to my life. “iSafe N Secure” was conceived and designed with this experience in mind.

2. Do you think Apple’s offerings for developers for developing Apps is good? Are there any changes required?

Their offerings are very good. My one complaint with Apple has to do with the review process. I have had apps rejected for one reason, I fix that reason and resubmit, then they reject it again for an entirely different issue. It would be nice if they could state everything that needs to be done to make the app acceptable the first time it gets a reject. I would also like to see a “fast track” for updates so they don’t have to go through the entire process as new apps.

3. What is your marketing strategy? What marketing techniques do you use to promote your App in this heavily competitive application space?

Most of my apps are niche apps, thus I rely primarily on press releases and forums where the particular apps users would participate.

4. Can you describe your “Eureka” moment while developing the App?

My “Eureka” moments for all my Apps is when I get the email from Apple that says “processing to the App Store”.

5. How did you come to decide the price that you would be charging users to purchase your App?

I try and determined the value of the app for the targeted users and start there. Many of my apps then have price adjustments after the first few weeks to find the level that they are most profitable. (Sometimes lower, but sometimes I’m pleasantly surprised to find out I can sell just as many apps at a higher price)

You can probably imagine that Apple as a company is very proud, this is because of the record breaking quarter that they had in Q4 2011. They were recently named the “most valuable company” in the world and the number one smartphone maker, but it appears that they have been ‘awarded’ another trophy to treasure on. They have been named as the number one PC maker in the world. This is quite an achievement on Apple’s part.

An analysis/research firm called Canalys reports that Apple sold 15 million iPads and 5 million Macs in Q4 2011. If you add the two up and count the iPad in as a ‘PC’ then that means that Apple represents 17% of the quarterly PC sales worldwide.

These very impressive numbers could represent a few things. They show that Apple is dominating the tablet market with the iPad. But more so, it is very apparent that the reality of computing is heading in the direction of mobility and being portable, it is estimated that in a few years laptops and tablets will be so versatile and powerful, like the traditional desktop computer is today, that desktops themselves will become very nearly obsolete.

What do you feel? Will Apple include a camera to the nano? Although the image look very real, we don’t believe Apple will do so. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

You may have read past articles about the problems that have been caused with the launch of iPhone 4S in China. As you can see from the picture of the Beijing Apple Store, there are many people waiting in anticipation – which is normal for the release of a new Apple product. However amongst this crowd, there are many “scalpers”, who go in as a customer and buy an iPhone and then sell them to people further back in the queue or online. And as you can probably predict Apple is trying to prevent this.

To do this they have designed an iPhone 4S reservation system, which is situated on the Chinese Apple Online Store. Customers can only use this service if they would like to buy an iPhone, they aren’t taking the custom from people who just walk in. To stop the scalpers from what they are doing in the queues, Apple is asking for Government ID’s and also asking the customer to present a proof of identification and their Government ID card. It is nothing but apparent that they have stepped up the security. It is thought that another reason why Apple have introduced this system is to reduce the size of the queues, and also to prevent people walking in and asking about stock.

The customers can reserve their iPhone 4S between the hours of 09:00 AM and 12:00 PM every day. They then receive an email from Apple at 09:00 PM confirming that they have successfully reserved an iPhone and what time they are required to pick it up from their chosen Apple Store.

It is clear that Apple have thought this through properly, despite the fact that they haven’t had to use this level of security on their reservations before, perhaps this will get introduced internationally to prevent queues and scalpers occurring elsewhere – only time will tell.

Apple sent this notification to all of those with a Chinese iTunes ID:

Due to high demand, we are accepting a limited number of iPhone reservations per day. To request an iPhone reservation, please choose your store and the iPhone you want. If we have an iPhone reservation for you, you’ll receive a confirmation email by 9:00 p.m. tonight that includes the time when you can pick up your iPhone tomorrow. A government-issued photo ID matching the name and ID number on your reservation is required for iPhone purchases. If you don’t receive an email, we were unable to reserve an iPhone for you, and you can try again another time. Only those who receive an email confirming their reservation will be able to purchase an iPhone; we will not be selling iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S to walk-in customers.

But, to get it to our readers about how companies are trying to imitate Apple and in particular the visionary Steve Jobs, we thought it to be appropriate to bring to your attention this “absolutely horrible” ad from about the Action Pad from Taiwan. The ad was run on AXN-Taiwan and is also available on YouTube.

It copies the entire style of Steve Jobs and Apple keynotes. Instead of the rebel Steve Jobs, some dummy is posing as him with angel wings on his back and promoting the Action Pad with Android in Taiwan by Action Electronics. This is shit. AXN should not have aired it in the first place. That’s another reason why the essence of Android goes missing all the time. Because guys like these, simply put Android on a crappy hardware which makes the entire ecosystem polluted.

The ad can be viewed is below -

There have been many attempts by various developers to secure a third party tethering App on Apple’s App Store and this isn’t the first time that one has managed to escape the Apple App review guys and make it to the store. “QuasiDisk” is described as a “simple file manager to take any of your files, photos or documents with you on the go” functions by way of a proxy service, which Apple strictly disallow from their App Store as it could potentially compete with their own service, iCloud. One of the benefits of this App is that it allows tethering without having a carrier plan.

We are pretty sure that these types of Apps will definitely keep sneaking onto the App Store due to the fact that they are useful for many people out there who don’t have a carrier plan or just want an alternative to iCloud. But if you are looking to use QuasiDisk then you will have to find a different alternative as Apple have already pounced and removed it from their servers.
