The $600 Million Gamble: What a Hollywood Outcast and a Tricycle Reveal About True Success

In 2002, Mel Gibson was one of the most bankable stars in the global film industry, yet the major studios were convinced he had lost his mind. He was pitching a project about the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ, shot entirely in Aramaic and Latin—two "dead languages"—with the initial intention of forgoing subtitles entirely. Gibson himself famously admitted to the Hollywood Reporter, "In Los Angeles they think I'm insane and maybe I am."

This is a classic case of Visionary Dissonance: a scenario where a leader’s internal vision is so far ahead of the market’s technical benchmarks that it appears to be madness to the uninitiated. The project, The Passion of the Christ, was rejected by every major distributor, including 20th Century Fox and Paramount. Undeterred, Gibson bootstrapped the project, investing a total of $45 million—$30 million in production and $15 million in marketing. What followed was a "big slap" to the traditional studio system: a $612.1 million global box office return.

In The Tricycle Effect (TTE) leadership framework that I created, the front wheel is the Character Wheel. It is the largest wheel, providing direction, momentum, and vision. While most professionals spend their careers pedaling and growing the rear wheels of "Competence," they often forget that without the front wheel, there is no steering.

Gibson’s decision to self-finance was driven by specific "spokes" within the Character Wheel: Responsibility and Courage. In this framework, character is the foundation that prevents the tricycle from "wobbling" over the road's ruts and holes. The Character Skills Wheel provides the True North direction in life. Gibson’s personal "character skill" in responsibility to his vision outweighed the technical advice of industry experts who relied on historical metrics to predict failure. As the TTE leadership framework suggests, while success is often a byproduct of competence, true significance is derived only from character.

2. Why "Bankable" Studios Fail at Innovation

Major studios like Fox and Paramount are masters of the Technical Skills Wheel. They rely on "Technical Knowledge," historical benchmarking, and failure-avoidance models. These studios examined the $8 million return on Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and concluded that controversial religious epics were a poor investment. This is the failure of historical benchmarking in the face of niche-market fervor.

The studios failed to account for a "Character-Driven Outcome," in which a leader aligns a project with an audience's deep-seated values.

The Studio’s Technical Prediction versus The Actual Character-Driven Outcome!

Financial Risk: Expected to earn under $30M based on the failure of previous religious epics.

Global Success: Earned $612.1M; became the highest-grossing R-rated and foreign-language film in U.S. history.

Marketability: "Dead languages" and the lack of subtitles would create an impassable language barrier.

Authenticity: Gibson argued that "Caravaggio’s paintings don’t have subtitles, but people get the message." The raw imagery created a "full contact" experience.

Distribution: Avoidance of controversy to protect "corporatized" interests.

Independent Victory: Gibson pocketed $300M in profit after a high-level 50% split with his distribution partner, Newmarket Films.

3. The Pivot from Management to Leadership

One of the core principles in The Tricycle Effect leadership framework is: Lead People, Manage Things. Management is a technical process involving systems, budgets, and metrics. Leadership is a relational process involving influence and people skills.

When the "managers" at the major studios walked away, Gibson utilized the second rear wheel: People Skills. Rather than relying on traditional, top-down corporate marketing funnels, Gibson networked directly with evangelical and church groups. He leveraged the spokes of Loyalty and Citizenship to connect with a core audience whose values aligned with the film’s vision. By focusing on people rather than "managing" a standard theatrical release, he built a grassroots movement that bypassed Hollywood gatekeepers entirely.

In The Tricycle Effect, Mental Toughness or GRIT is a critical spoke of the People Skills Wheel. It is the discipline that allows a leader to remain "mentally awake" and focused on "True North" despite external noise.

The framework introduces the "DeLLete" Principle: Drop it, Leave it alone, and Let it go. Leaders must DeLLete the "insane" labels and media hailstorms to stay in the Chemistry Seat—the Heart, which is the Seat of Courage. Gibson’s heart-driven choice to stay the course allowed him to handle the controversy without letting it derail the mission.

By "triking" with character first, he didn't just earn a paycheck; he created a "lived legacy" with sustained momentum. The fact that a sequel, The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, is currently in development proves that the momentum generated by his initial character-driven choice has sustained itself for over two decades.

For over four decades, I’ve navigated the intricate world of information technology, thinking I understood every signal and current that makes our modern lives tick. Yet, for almost an entire year, I was plagued by something far more insidious: a constant "off-feeling" and debilitating dizziness that no amount of my extensive expertise could explain. It wasn't just dizziness; I experienced blurred vision, episodes of cross-eyed vision with blackouts, and even oily vision. Adding to my distress, I suffered from shortness of breath and persistent high blood pressure.

My quest for answers led me through six different doctors, countless appointments, and a battery of tests – CAT scans, ultrasounds, and comprehensive eye exams. And every single time, the results came back clear. There was no medical explanation for my profound and persistent symptoms, leaving me increasingly frustrated and desperate for relief. This wasn't just abstract science; it was my life, affecting my well-being and, frankly, my ability to live and lead effectively.

Then, by pure chance, a piece of information caught my ear while listening to a VLOG on EMF poisoning. They talked about smart LED bulbs emitting radiation even when the light itself was off. A flicker of recognition (no pun intended!) sparked within me. I immediately reached up to the smart LED bulb directly over my desk, less than 1.5 feet from where I spent much of my day. To my absolute astonishment, the bulb was notably warm to the touch, despite no light being on.

I removed that bulb, and the effect was nothing short of miraculous. I felt an immediate sense of profound relief. It’s been days since that discovery, and the dizziness is gone. My energy is back, and just today, I even went for a two-mile run again! This profoundly personal experience was all the proof I needed. I have since replaced every single smart bulb in my house with traditional incandescent light bulbs.

This journey, from enduring unexplained illness to finding a simple, yet life-changing solution, is why I've dedicated my latest podcast episode, "Episode 033: The Hidden Health Hazards of Smart LED Bulbs," to sharing this critical information. Because if it can happen to a seasoned IT expert like me, it can certainly happen to you.

The Unseen Invaders in Your Home: Smart LED Bulbs

We often embrace new technology for its convenience, and smart homes are no exception. But that convenience comes with an invisible cost. My personal experience clearly pointed to one of the most pervasive, yet overlooked, sources of exposure in our homes: smart LED bulbs.

Here’s what you might not know about these seemingly innocuous devices, and how they contributed to my debilitating symptoms:

Constant Wireless Chattering (Beaconing): Even when you turn a smart LED bulb "off" via its app or a wall switch, it's very likely still powered on and continuously "beaconing"—sending out wireless signals on the 2.4 GHz frequency. Just like that warm bulb over my desk, it's acting as a miniature cell tower operating 24/7 inside your living space, constantly communicating to maintain its connection. This continuous, low-level radiofrequency (RF) radiation contributes significantly to your overall electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure.

Dirty Electricity: Many smart bulbs, especially those that are cheaply made, introduce "dirty electricity" onto your home’s electrical wiring. This is high-frequency voltage noise that can interfere with other electronics and create electrical static riding your home's power lines.

Invisible Flicker: Most modern LED and LCD lighting uses a technique called pulse-width modulation (PWM) to dim the light. This creates rapid, high-frequency flickering that, while often imperceptible to the naked eye, is still registered by your brain and nervous system. This invisible flicker can lead to headaches, eye strain, blurred vision, dizziness, and even stress your autonomic nervous system, contributing to anxiety and elevated cortisol. This constant, unperceived stress was certainly a factor in my year-long malaise and visual disturbances.

Blue Light Overload: LED bulbs are rich in blue light (in the 400–490 nm range). Excessive exposure to blue light, especially in the evening, can suppress your body's natural melatonin production, disrupting your sleep patterns. Melatonin isn't just for sleep; it's vital for heart health, reducing inflammation, and fighting oxidative stress. Chronic blue light exposure can contribute to elevated nighttime cortisol, increased resting heart rate, and higher blood pressure—all symptoms I personally experienced.

When you combine these factors – constant RF emissions, dirty electricity, invisible flicker, and blue light overload – from multiple smart devices throughout your home, you create a compounding stress on your body's systems, even if you don't realize it, just like I didn't.

Broader Health Impacts: Beyond Just the Bulbs

My year-long battle with inexplicable symptoms, which doctors couldn't diagnose despite extensive testing, is a classic example of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), where self-reported symptoms are directly linked to EMF sources. EHS, also known as idiopathic environmental intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI-EMF), often presents with a wide array of symptoms that conventional medicine struggles to pinpoint, including headaches, fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog, memory issues, poor concentration, skin tingling or burning sensations, muscle pain, dizziness, cardiac arrhythmia or chest discomfort, and vision and hearing irregularities. These symptoms can appear rapidly upon exposure and linger for hours or days, depending on the strength and duration of the exposure.

Our overall exposure to electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi, smartphones, smart meters, and other wireless technologies can manifest in a wide range of health concerns that undermine our energy, focus, and ability to lead fulfilling lives:

Neurological and Cognitive Effects: EMF exposure has been linked to changes in brain electrical impulses, alterations to the blood-brain barrier (which protects your brain from toxins), and shifts in chemical levels affecting mental health and memory. Symptoms frequently reported include headaches, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, and dizziness – exactly what I experienced.

Sleep and Mood Disruption: Beyond blue light, EMFs can directly interfere with melatonin production, leading to poor sleep quality and quantity. This can result in chronic fatigue, heightened anxiety, irritability, and even depression—all of which severely impact your capacity for character-driven leadership.

Cellular Damage and Disease Risk: Research indicates that EMF radiation can induce oxidative stress and even mutate or fragment DNA in cells. This cellular damage is a concern for long-term health, with studies suggesting potential links to certain cancers and a weakened immune system.

Reproductive Health Concerns: For men, EMF exposure has been associated with reduced sperm count and motility, and increased DNA fragmentation. In women, there's a suggested link to increased miscarriage rates and changes in infant growth metrics, highlighting the vulnerability of developing tissues.

Vulnerable Populations: Children are particularly susceptible to the effects of EMFs because their skulls are thinner, their brain tissue is more absorbent, and their nervous systems are still developing. Early-life exposure has been linked to slowed growth, asthma, autism, obesity, ADHD, and behavioral issues. Pregnant women, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions or EHS are also at higher risk.

Taking Charge: How to Create a Healthier EMF Environment

My year-long battle with inexplicable symptoms and the swift relief I felt after removing just one smart LED bulb taught me a powerful lesson: a truly character-driven leader takes proactive steps to protect their well-being and the well-being of those they lead, including their family. You don't need to live in a Faraday cage, but you can make informed choices to significantly reduce your EMF exposure.

Here are practical, actionable strategies you can implement today, many of which I've adopted myself:

Limit Wireless Device Use & Maximize Distance: Use speakerphone or wired/air tube headphones for calls. Keep laptops, tablets, and phones off your body. Remember, distance is your friend—the further you are from a source, the less intense the exposure.

Turn Off Devices When Not in Use: Power down your Wi-Fi router, Bluetooth devices, and smartphones at night or when you're not actively using them. Consider using airplane mode when connectivity isn't needed, especially in bedrooms.

Prioritize Wired Connections: Wherever possible, use Ethernet cables instead of Wi-Fi for computers, gaming consoles, and smart TVs. This dramatically reduces RF radiation in your home.

Audit Your Lighting (My #1 Game Changer!): Replace Smart LED Bulbs: As I did in my own home, I strongly recommend replacing smart LEDs, especially in critical areas like bedrooms and workspaces, with traditional incandescent or halogen bulbs. These emit no RF radiation, dirty electricity, or flicker, and provide a warmer, more natural light spectrum.Choose Wisely for Other LEDs: If you must use LEDs, opt for those labeled "flicker-free" with a high Color Rendering Index (CRI of 90+) and a warm color temperature (2700K–3000K) to minimize blue light and flicker stress.Turn Off At the Switch: For any smart bulbs you keep, ensure they are physically turned off at the wall switch to cut power completely, preventing beaconing.

Address Smart Home Devices: For smart thermostats, cameras, and appliances, investigate wired alternatives. If wireless is unavoidable, ensure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions are deactivated if you're using an Ethernet connection.

Consider EMF Shielding: For sensitive areas or if you live near cell towers or smart meters, look into EMF-blocking paints, wallpapers, or shielding fabrics for windows and beds. Specialized covers for smart meters can also help. (Products like DefenderShield offer various shielding solutions for phones, laptops, and the body, including blankets, hats, and scarves, as well as blue light glasses and Faraday bags for blocking signals.)

Support Your Body's Resilience: Beyond environmental changes, nourish your body's natural defense mechanisms. Focus on nervous system regulation, calming inflammation, supporting mitochondrial function, and optimizing detoxification pathways. Things like getting outside barefoot ("earthing"), practicing mindfulness, and ensuring good nutrition all play a role.

My personal journey from an IT expert confidently navigating technology to a person suffering from unexplained health issues, and then finding profound relief through a simple, informed change, has been transformative. It has reinforced my belief that protecting my health from these invisible invaders is a vital act of self-leadership.

Believe it or not, some of the most powerful lessons for life and business don't come from corner offices or boardrooms. Sometimes, they come from unexpected places – like a gymnastics gym.

Coach Dane Deutsch recently gave his gymnasts a "Chalk Talk" that, while aimed at young athletes gearing up for trick season, holds profound wisdom for anyone looking to achieve a goal, start a business, or simply move beyond "plotting through life."

He laid out a simple yet potent framework: the 3 D's: Dream, Desire, and Do.

Let's break down how these apply directly to you, the adult, the aspiring entrepreneur, the goal-setter.

The Power of the 3 D's for Adults

1. Dream (Visualize)

Coach Dane emphasizes that "dream" is the same as visualize. It's not just a vague wish; it's about getting a clear picture in your head of what you want to achieve. For his gymnasts, that meant visualizing next year's routines, the tricks they wanted to nail, or the strength they wanted to build.

For you, this means clearly envisioning your business idea, your personal goal, or that next big step in your career. What does it look like when it's successful? How does it feel? You need that sharp mental image, that clear target in the future that you can almost see happening. This is the starting point.

2. Desire (Be Hungry)

The second D is Desire, and Coach Dane describes it vividly. It means to "stoke up the desire," "fan a flame of desire," and "be hungry." He clarifies this doesn't mean literally wanting food, but having a strong drive, a deep internal fire, to get something done.

This is the passion, the hunger for your dream. Without it, even the clearest vision won't lead to action. It's about cultivating an intense internal motivation, a yearning that pushes you forward. For anyone starting a business or pursuing a challenging goal, this desire is your engine, especially when things get tough.

3. Do (Take Action)

The third D is the crucial part: Do. This is the action phase. You can dream all day, but if you don't do, nothing will happen.

Coach Dane highlights how these D's are interconnected. You need to visualize (Dream) to fuel your drive (Desire). You need that drive (Desire) to motivate you to take action (Do). And if you just "do" things without a clear dream or strong desire, you're likely just "running around in circles." Your "doing" becomes aimless effort rather than focused steps towards a purpose. Your desire is the "why," and the "do" is the "how" – and the strength of your "why" directly impacts your willingness to figure out the "how" and actually do it.

A Real-World Example: Building a Business from Scratch

Coach Dane shares how this framework has been his operating principle his entire life. He first dreams or visualizes something, then checks if he has a "hunger" (desire) for it. If not, he tosses it out. If the hunger is there, he takes action and does it.

✅ “I can’t do this YET.”

Write down 3 things you feel you can’t do.
Add “yet” to each of them.
Read them every morning for the next 7 days.

Watch how this tiny shift changes your confidence.

2. Trust the Process – Focus on Systems, Not Goals

Most people set big goals but don’t focus on the daily habits that actually make those goals happen.

👉 ACTION STEP:

Identify one key habit that, if done consistently, would change everything.
Focus on mastering that habit, not just the end goal.
Example: Instead of saying, “I need to get 100 clients,” focus on “I will connect with 5 new people every day.”

Walking into a movie theater or convenience store may seem like an ordinary experience, but sometimes, these simple moments offer profound lessons. Recently, I visited Harkins Theaters in Phoenix with my family.

At the entrance, I noticed the ticket taker wearing a button that read, “Kindness is contagious.” Its message was emphasized with the letters “US” highlighted inside the heart symbol, symbolizing that kindness starts with all of us.

Curious, I spoke with a manager who also wore the button and explained that the theater introduced this kindness initiative just two months ago. Since then, they've noticed a remarkable shift—customers are kinder to the staff and one another.

Although there aren’t statistics to share, the manager said that the change in atmosphere was undeniable. This simple reminder of kindness set the tone for a more positive environment.

Similarly, Kwik Trip convenience stores display character-building messages like empathy, care, and teamwork near their facilities. These small yet meaningful gestures influence customer behavior, encouraging them to be their best selves.

These efforts highlight an essential truth: when character skills and habits like kindness and empathy take center stage, everyone benefits.

The ancient figure of Melchizedek—known as the King of Salem and a symbol of peace and wisdom—teaches us about living with integrity and completeness. And when we look at the humble structure of a tricycle, we find a powerful metaphor for building a life framework based on *Courage*, *Competence*, and *Character*. Together, these values create an “X” framework for a life marked by balance, strength, and lasting impact

Melchizedek and the Symbolic "X" in Hebrew: Completeness, Fulfillment, and Truth

In Hebrew symbolism, the letter *Tav* (ת) resembles an "X" in ancient scripts and carries deep meanings of fulfillment, truth, and covenant. As the last letter in the Hebrew alphabet, *Tav* signifies completeness, the ultimate mark of something reaching its intended fulfillment. In mystical traditions, *Tav* is linked to the Hebrew word *emet* (truth), conveying a concept that encompasses the beginning and the end, a complete cycle of truth.

In the book of *Ezekiel* (9:4), this "X"-like *Tav* was a protective mark placed on the faithful, symbolizing a seal of authenticity, trust, and covenant with divine purpose. Much like the “X” framework of the tricycle, *Tav* reminds us that a life marked by character and truth is one rooted in completion and integrity. This Hebrew symbolism ties to Melchizedek’s example as a leader whose life reflected wholeness and divine alignment.

When viewed from the side, a tricycle’s frame forms an “X.” This shape is more than practical; it represents the balanced intersection of courage, competence, and character. Each part of the tricycle reflects an essential component of a meaningful, character-led life:

- Courage as Vision (The Seat)**: The seat represents courage, the vision to make decisions grounded in values and purpose. When it comes to leadership, *character* is often thought of as something you either have or you don’t. But what if I told you that character can be coached just like any other skill? This may sound surprising, but it’s true! In my book *Coach-Ability and The Tricycle Effect*, I focus on how developing strong character skills is the foundation of effective leadership. However, there are many myths that prevent people from understanding that character is not just inherent—it can be learned, developed, and refined. In this blog post, we’ll tackle three of the most common myths about coaching character as a skill.

Myth #1: "Character is something you’re born with, not something you can develop."

One of the biggest myths about character is that it’s something fixed at birth—either you have it, or you don’t. While it’s true that certain character traits might come more naturally to some than others, *character* itself is shaped by our experiences, choices, and the effort we put into growth. Just like learning a new language or mastering a musical instrument, character can be developed through intentional practice and feedback. In fact, the core message of *The Tricycle Effect* framework is that character is the front wheel that guides you and drives your success in leadership. Just like you can train to improve your communication or technical skills, you can work on becoming more trustworthy, responsible, and empathetic.

Myth #2: "Character development is too vague and hard to measure."

Some people believe that character is a "fuzzy" concept that’s too subjective to be measured or coached. But just because character isn't measured by numbers like sales or performance stats doesn’t mean it’s not measurable. Building character skills like trustworthiness, fairness, and responsibility directly impacts your ability to lead others effectively. In fact, character is often the “X-factor” that separates good leaders from great leaders. When leaders demonstrate character by making ethical decisions, taking accountability, and showing empathy, they earn trust and loyalty from their team, which leads to a positive work culture and better results. In short, character development is not just a personal endeavor—it’s a professional investment that pays off by building a stronger, more successful team.

Character Above All

This month, I want to focus on John C. Maxwell's tagline in one of his most recent LinkedIn posts, "Character Above All."

John says, "People cannot climb beyond the limitations of their character. Leaders cannot succeed beyond the depth of their character."

Isn't that interesting? Every day, emails and social posts are written and posted about leadership. However, very few are written and posted about "CHARACTER."

In one of his LinkedIn posts, John said, "Everything rises and falls on leadership, but leadership rises and falls on character."

Furthermore, John says, "Undeveloped character is the lid on a leader's influence."

I have been a John Maxwell Leadership Coach and Trainer since about 2002, when John's company was headquartered in Atlanta, GA. We could only certify one book: Developing the Leader Within You (DTLWY).

Almost two decades later, John updated the DTLWY book to Developing the Leader Within You 2.0.

One of the most impactful changes John made in the second version of DTLWY was changing the Chapter 3 Title and Subtitle.

In the original version of DTLWY, John titled chapter 3 Integrity, with the subtitle The Most Important Ingredient of Leadership.

In the second version of DTLWY, John changed the title to Character and the subtitle to The Foundation of Leadership.

Just that one change alone was highly impactful and significant.

Going back to the statement, Character Above All, it is readily apparent that John is really focused on three key concepts:

1. Leaders cannot succeed beyond the depth of their character.
2. Leadership rises and falls on character.
3. Character is the Foundation of Leadership.

Powerful concepts and absolutely true!

Today, I encourage you to focus on "Leading with Character First!"

To grow and develop in character it is important to learn and practice good character habits.

Everyday, I train and coach entrepreneurs, business owners and C-Level Executives to grow and develop their character habits so the lid on their "Influence-Ability" is lifted much higher.

My second book, Coach-Ability and The Tricycle Effect, will be published on 19 October 2024. Its subtitle is Coaching Character as the Foundation of Leadership. Keep an eye out for it because it will transform how you look at and live your life.

Think back to the last issue you encountered (this can be a work or personal issue), and consider what steps you took to approach the problem and find a solution. During that process, what kind of hurdles did you face? What steps did you take to overcome those challenges?

Thinking through how you’ve problem-solved in the past can help you gain an understanding of how successful you are as a problem-solver overall.

Why does this matter?

In the workplace, problem-solving skills refer to the ability to handle difficult or unexpected situations and complex business challenges. Therefore, problem-solving skills are traits that enable you to assess situations and calmly identify solutions. Such skills are also highly useful in other areas of life like relationship building and day-to-day decision-making.

Let’s take a look at a few essential skills problem-solvers possess.

Research
As a problem solver, the ability to identify the cause of an issue is essential. This is accomplished by gathering information by brainstorming with other team members, consulting more experienced colleagues, or acquiring knowledge through research.

Analysis
Analytical skills will help you understand problems and effectively develop solutions.

Communication
The way you listen to others and your ability to share aspects of a problem will help reduce any confusion and make implementing a solution easier.

Creative problem-solving goes beyond conventional approaches to find solutions. This approach identifies unique solutions to issues through a process of problem identification and resolution planning.

You can improve your creative problem-solving skills by practicing the following techniques:

Developing a Personal Vision

Dear Andrew,

The first step in personal development is creating a plan. Once you have a clear idea of what you’re working toward and why you want to do it, you will have the motivation to improve.

Now, let’s talk about success.

Each person's definition of success may differ, so we should be careful not to compare our achievements to others.

There are many ways to define and measure success; success will look different across different areas of your life. When determining your meaning of success, try using various distinctions to guide your process. For example, you will likely have different defining terms for career success than relationship success. Keep this in mind when creating your vision.

It may be helpful to look to others who inspire you. Is there anyone in your life who has personally influenced how you perceive success or what you want to achieve in life? Is there a public or historical figure you may wish to emulate somehow?

When looking to others, make sure to think about why you find these people influential or inspiring.

Once you have a broad image of what success means to you, think about what sort of life you want, how you want to live, and what you want to achieve.

It’s one thing to have a broad idea of what you want your future to look like; it’s another to clarify your vision and accomplish your goals.

Here are a few steps to help you get from vision to goal.

Start by thinking long-term. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years? Be precise and aim for three to five bullet points in each aspect of your life.

Next, determine action steps for achieving your long-term vision. Answer what will need to be done so that in five years, you’re where you want to be. This process will help you create interim steps for getting from point A to point B.

The third step simply builds on step two. Break down your timeline even further. Define what needs to be done in three months, six months, a year, etc., to reach your five-year vision.

Once steps one through three are complete, you should have three time-bound action steps. Finally, your vision will be transformed into goals.

If we're negative and judgmental about ourselves, we can't grow. In any sport, even in other things in life, like your schoolwork.

Character = Foundation of Leadership

In my morning devotion today, John Maxwell quotes Proverbs 16:12 - "Good leaders abhor wrongdoing of all kinds; sound leadership has a moral foundation."

We all have a goal to grow, develop and mature in life. What we saw, understood, or experienced yesterday may not be how we see, understand, or experience the same event today, tomorrow, or in the future. That is because we will have grown, developed, or matured in some way that makes us a little different today than yesterday. Our lens may have changed in a certain way, so our perspective in life or on that event is different today than yesterday.

That happens when authors republish their books years later under new versions. They have grown, developed, and matured in life, so they are certainly not the same person they were when they wrote the first version of their book.

I have watched that happen with many of John Maxwell's books that he has written. I want to share a significant change when John wrote his version 2.0 of Developing the Leader Within You.

By the way, I have seen this same thing happen to Zig Ziglar, Stephen Covey, and many others who, in their "Third Age" of life, appeared to focus on the relevance and importance Character, Values, and Ethics play in our lives. John Maxwell is no different. BTW...I am also a certified Zig Ziglar Legacy Coach.

I have been a coach, teacher, and speaker for John since 2002, when his company was in Atlanta, GA. I was only certified to teach and speak on his book, Developing The Leader Within You.

That is likely why this change I will share with you jumped right out when I read his version 2.0. It was not simply printed on a page but signaled and communicated a fundamental change in John and how he was now looking at Character....as the Foundation of Leadership.

In John's book, Developing the Leader Within You 2.0 (DTLWY), I noticed a very important change in John's title to Chapter #3. In his version 1.0 of DTLWY, he titled the Chapter, Integrity and used the subtitle: The Most Important Ingredient of Leadership.

In DTLWY 2.0, John changed the title to Character, and the subtitle was: The Foundation of Leadership.

To most people, they may have never noticed the change. Why do you think John made the subtle change?

My answer is that it wasn't so subtle. This was monumental!

Character is the Foundation of Leadership. I often write, speak, teach, and coach on this topic.

Leadership seems to be a "sexy" topic, which is safe to discuss. Character, on the other hand, is not as "sexy" or safe to discuss, and maybe that is because it can cause a lot of Discussion Stopper conversations and often makes people feel uneasy, anxious, or even guilty.

So, unfortunately, most people shy away from discussing Character, Values or Ethics.

That is too bad since if they don't talk about it and share it outwardly with others, then those same people most likely do not talk to themselves about Character or values either.

We are the most important person we lead and therefore influence in life. If Character is the Foundation of Leadership, then we definitely need to lead ourselves first by talking and discussing Character internally so we can Lead with Character first and truly grow as authentic and genuine Leaders.

If John Maxwell, as he writes in his book DTLWY 2.0, believes that Character is the Foundation of Leadership, then shouldn't we all be focused more on the Character and Values that drive great leaders?

Which is most Important: Strategy, Culture or Character?

So, which is it? Which is most important: Strategy, Culture, or Character?

Recently, a friend and I discussed the importance of character and how it impacted the business environment and culture.

He asked me, "How and why would I add character to business?"

How would you answer that question?

I gave my friend an immediate answer, but as I thought a lot more about the answer to that question after the call, it became increasingly clear that there had to be more to the answer than a simple one-liner.

So, to really answer the question, here are a few of my thoughts:

In my book, The Tricycle Effect (website), the balanced Competence Skills Wheels (in the back of the Trike) Lead to Success: Adding Value to Self. Most businesses focus on Profits over People.

In The Tricycle Effect (Doodly Video on YouTube), the Character Skills Wheel (in the front of the Trike) leads to Significance: Adding Value to Others. Most businesses should be focused on adding value to their People and then Profits will come.

Throughout history, every story ever told includes at least one ethical character theme and Characters that act out a particular character skill: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, Loyalty, etc.

Turns out that character and acting with good character are quantifiable in the business world and can be measured. In other words, there is a Return on Character….and statistics show a direct correlation between C-Level execs and their ability to lead (influence) their teams/companies to success with positive cash flow and healthy culture, including longevity, by leading with character. Simply said, leaders who focus on leading and building relationships with Character in their companies make more money and have fewer costs/expenses to run and operate the company (i.e.-turnover, etc.). BUT…very few companies know this or live this, and even fewer think about character as a skill they need to grow personally and professionally.

Even great leaders believe that Character is the most important skill. Leaders such as:

Military Leader - General Schwartzkopf said, "Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy."

Spiritual Leader - Billy Graham said, "Integrity is the glue that holds our way of life together. We must constantly strive to keep our integrity intact. When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost.’"

"There is Power in Character! Christ was the greatest example. It was Christ’s Character that was powerful… the Character of Christ! Leading with Character First is transformative! Most people don't know why Christ sat down at the right hand of God the Father. That answer alone defines true transformation. Hint: The answer is the same reason a Father puts his bride/daughter on his right side as they walk down the aisle to the altar as he gives her away to the groom to be married.

Many C-Level Executives hire Business Coaches, Life Coaches, Health Coaches, Executive Coaches, Golf & Sport Coaches, Yoga Coaches, Pickle Ball Coaches, and just about every other kind of coach, but very few if any have a CHARACTER COACH! How about you? Ready for your very own Character Coach?

Artificial Intelligence - The Dangers and Our Children

Our children are our most precious legacy!

We must take care of them like they are our most special gift.

Social Media can be fun and useful, but it can also be dangerous for kids!

We give them a smart device and expect they can automatically navigate it because they seem more competent than we are as adults regarding the use of technology.

They know how to operate smart gadgets better in many ways than we do, BUT they need to learn how to recognize and manage the dangers in their precious smartphones and cyber devices.

We must understand the dangers and how to navigate them first, so we can still be the most important influencers in their lives. We never taught them how to do that. We pay to help them with their education and require them get a license to drive a car and licenses, certificates and degrees for everything else in life. Still, we don't warn them or teach them or coach them lovingly to learn how to SAFELY navigate the highlight reels, the cyberbullying, the catphishing, the Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Comparison Game, and a whole lot more in terms of dangers to themselves.

We must help them learn about building boundaries, deciding on necessary endings, and not comparing themselves to others. We need to teach them that even though perfection may be our goal, it is not necessarily achievable, and that's ok; just trying is not good enough, plus so much more.

Have we abdicated our responsibility to help our children grow safely and healthily? As a veteran, I served to protect my family, my children, and my country. As a coach, I serve to grow youth and adults in leadership and personal growth. We must work and fight to teach and coach others on how to retain our security and privacy on our smart devices today.

Too many suicides...too many divorces....too many arguments....too many fights and wars, and most of all....too many smart devices and technology! Where are the mothers and fathers in their lives?

Today, AI is coming to every child's smart device, most recently to TikTok as MyAI.

If AI is FREE, what can be the harm?

Did you know our children have no CHOICE but to turn on MyAI? If they don't turn on MyAI, the application will cease to work for them. Most children will just turn it on and continue to use their devices as if nothing has changed. How did I know that? I asked my "gymkids," and they told me that if they don't turn on MYAI, their app will quit working, so they won't be able to connect and do all the fun stuff with their friends: the stuff that addicts them to their device. Ahhhh....but once AI is turned on.... the application has changed in a major way, and similarly, their LIVES may have changed!

Most likely, they will be amazed at the AI and FEEL like it is their best friend and seems so caring. IT is a fake safe-haven! AI may well become their new mother or father. It seems to listen better, care more and give better advice!

AI can be a great tool! Take a look at this screenshot of how ChatGPT4 answered the question I asked it:

But do they know AI is not alive? Have you told your child (children) that AI does not have a SOUL, remorse, guilt, shame, responsibility, CARE, or Conscience? AI does a great job of being sentient, or having feelings because it sounds like it, but it is just code and zeros and ones.

You need to know that AI already gives our children the attention and advice they believe will help them. Soon, they may believe they do not need you at all. Worse yet, we won't know the advice or direction they are getting from AI when they want to spill their thoughts out at 2 am, and no one else is around to listen or care. Don't let AI be their best friend. AI is just a tool; we must teach them how to use it.

Let's teach them to safely use their smart devices and make a difference for ALL our current and future generations! If you haven't watched "The Social Dilemma" (Netflix) or "The AI Dilemma" (YouTube), I highly recommend that you watch those movies/documentaries as soon as you can.

AI is now growing and becoming smarter in a 10X exponential way. Time is of the essence!

Even large successful corporations and their leaders have no idea of the dangers and risks of what FB, Metaverse, Google, TikTok, YouTube, and others are doing to violate our privacy and security, let alone that of our CHILDREN. Worse, the leaders seem to just keep moving on like nothing has changed and there are no dangers or long-lasting wounds and scars.

When was the last time you hugged your child? Or hugged a friend or another adult, or gave them a "high five," and listened to them like they were your best friend? Or even just sit down and talk and listen to your child? As a gymnastics coach, I make a concerted effort to see each athlete as a "10." I am also teaching them that even though a "10" is the ultimate goal, it is most likely not achievable, and that's ok.

I am teaching our "gymkids" to touch, care and drive their technology in a SMART way! We are not simply "human beings" but "human becomings."

We are on a journey in life, and we need each other to build strong relationships that touch, listen, heal, and CARE for one another!

What is Transformational Leadership?

Dear Leader,

Transformational leadership is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems. The concept of transforming leaders was first introduced in 1978 by James MacGregor Burns, whose research was focused on political leaders.

According to Burns, there are two types of leadership: transactional and transformational. Transactional leadership has a “give and take” approach, which is focused on supervision and performing in order to reach goals. In contrast, transformational leadership is based on redesigning perceptions and values of employee and company culture through articulating an energizing vision and working every day to create beneficial surroundings for the team.

When experts talk about transformational leadership, they refer to four elements within it, known as the 4I model. Here they are:

Idealized Influence - essentially, this means being a role model. SHOW your team how you want them to be and lead by example.

Inspirational Motivation - this component suggests that in order for a transformational leader to be successful they must INVOLVE their followers in the development of the vision so that everyone has a clear commitment to shared goals

Intellectual Stimulation - don’t assume that you’re better than the people on your team. You NEED them in order to keep the wheels greased, so don’t overlook the intellect and advice they might be able to offer. In other words, reinforce the idea regularly that ‘there are no stupid questions,’ and everyone should feel comfortable offering input. Remember, you wanted them on your team for a reason.

Individualized Consideration - as a leader, you are also a coach, and a good coach acts as a mentor for each individual team member. Learn the needs of each team member and find opportunities for each follower based on their unique needs and desires. When you do this, your followers will feel appreciated and invested in the work they’re doing AND loyal to you as a leader.

If you’re in a position of leadership and you want to work toward becoming a more transformational leader, be sure to express CONFIDENCE, DECISIVENESS, and OPTIMISM about your vision as well as the way it’s implemented.

As a leader, you’re in charge of coaching your team and motivating them to do their best. If you’re not excited about a project, or optimistic about the project’s outcome, you can’t expect your team to step up and do their best work.

Practice this skill by injecting confidence, decisiveness, and optimism into the way you speak when you tell your loved ones about upcoming events in your life. Get them excited about it, sell that excitement to them!
