The show "Beauty Contest" is a joint venture of MUSA and the Austrian Cultural Forum New York and was alredy on show in the ACF NY in 2011. This project by austrian and international artist focuses on the human striving for beauty, the omnipresent dictates of beauty and how the individual is still able to maintain his or her freedom. Until May 26, 2012.

Urs Fischer has installed his show "Skinny Sunrise" at KUNSTHALLE Vienna.
With his sculptures he is balancing between grand gestures and pop attitude, playing with light and shadow, gravity, or materiality. Abstract, representational, and figurative artworks made of materials such as styrofoam, mirror glass or wax memorialize the vanitas motif and transience of the world. The ALBERTINA shows more than 200 pastels, watercolours and drawings by Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. This is the first international show dedicated exclusively to this theme. Not only works on paper by Claude Monet, Éduard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley but also by Eugéne Boudin, Berthe Morisot, Armand Guillaumin and Jean-Lois Forain are on display as well as the Postimpressionists Paul Signac and Georges Seurat or Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Striking is the freshness of the lines by pencil, charcoal and chalk. Until May 13, 2012.

Heidrun Holzfeind at BAWAG Contemporary

BAWAG Contemporary shows four groups of works by young austrian artist Heidrun Holzfeind: "Colonnade Park" (2011) portaits people living in a Mies van der Rohe building in Newark with photos and videointerviews. "Friday market" is about a market held on the streets of Cairo. "CU/Mexico 68" (2007) reflects on the students movement in 1968 with video interviews, slides and photos. "Strictly Privat" is a recent work about the austrian architect Ernst Schwadron, who once lived in the building the BAWAG Contemporary showrooms are now located. Till Apr 1, 2012.

In der BAWAG Contemporary zeigt die junge Österreichische Künstlerin Heidrun Holzfeind vier Werkgruppen: "Colonnade Park" zeigt in Fotos und Videointerviews Menschen die in einem Mies van der Rohe Bau in Newark leben. Part I: Claes Oldenburg The 60s

Mumok presents the largest show ever of Claes Oldenburg’s ground-breaking and emblematic early work of the 60s. Highlights are the icons of art history like his famous soft sculptures, that made him, together with Warhol and Lichtenstein, to one of the founding fathers of Pop Art. Till May, 28, 2012
This exhibition will travel to the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Museum of Modern Art (Apr 14–Augt 5, 2013) and Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (Sep 13, 2013–Jan 12, 2014).

Das Mumok zeigt die von Achim Hochdörfer zusammengestelle bisher umfangreichste Ausstellung von Claes Oldenburgs wegweisendem und emblematischem Frühwerk der 1960er-Jahre. Oldenburg, neben Warhol und Lichtenstein der bedeutensten Pop Art Künstler, wurde berühmt mit seinen Soft Sculptures, riesige weiche Nachbildungen von Altagsgegenständen wie Hamburgern oder Lichtschaltern. Noch bis 28. Mai 2012.
Die Ausstellung wird danach im Museum Ludwig, Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Museum of Modern Art und Walker Art Center zu sehen sein.

Part II: Claes Oldenburg's Mouse Museum

Part II of the big "Claes Oldenburg The 60s" show takes you inside the Mouse Museum. Oldenburg put together an odd collection of kitsch, found objects, souvenirs, trivial everyday pieces and toys sometimes with a sexual connotation and humour plus material and prototyps for his art works. The Mouse Museum was first shown in 1972 at the documenta 5 in Kassel and then acquired by the Ludwig Collection and donated to the mumok. Later a seperate "Ray Gun" wing was added, also belonging to the mumok.

Im zweiten Teil der großen Claes Oldenburg The 60s Schau führt uns in das Mouse Museum, ein Sammelsourium von Trivial- und Kitschobjekten, Fundstücke, Souvenirs, Altagsgegenständen und (Sex)-Spielzeug und sowie Material und Vormodelle, die Oldenburg für seine Kunstwerke verwendete, 385 Dinge die ihn zu seiner Arbeit inspirierten aber auch ein schwarzhumoristisches Miniaturabbild der Kapitalistischen Gesellschaft zeigen und Pop Art subsumieren.

“That’s me – That’s not me” Cindy Sherman at SAMMLUNG VERBUND

sammlung VERBUND shows the widely unknown early works by Cindy Sherman under the title “That’s me – That’s not me” and presents a “catalogue raisonné” compiled by Gabriele Schor in close collaboration with the artist. Early series of photographies, where Sherman already played numerous roles, were cut out by her and put together to complex stories like "Bus Riders" and "Murder Mystery People" or turned into animation films. Until May 16, 2012.

MoMA opens with a Cindy Sherman retrospective on Feb 26, 2012.

Die sammlung VERBUND zeigt frühe Arbeiten (1975-1977) von Cindy Sherman. Schon bevor sie für ihre "Film Stills" berühmt wurde fotografierte sie sich in den unterschiedlichsten Rollen, z.B. in den Cutout Serie "Bus Riders", "Doll Clothes" oder "Murder Mystery". Die ausgeschnittenen Figuren setzte sie zu teilweise komplexen Storyboards zusammen oder verwendete sie für Animationsfilmen. Bis 16. Mai 2012.

Das teilweise unbekannte, verschollene und wenig dokumentierte Frühwerk wurde von der Leiterin der Sammlung Gabriele Schor mit der Künstlerin aufbereitet und in einem umfangreichen Katalog dokumentiert. Ab 26.02.2012 zeigt das MoMA eine umfassende Cindy Sherman Retrospektive.

The 21er Haus opens with a contemporary view on the idea of the gesamtkunstwerk from the 1960s to very recent positions by young artists, in which the spectacular display architecture of gigantic black cubes by Esther Stocker turns the museum and the artworks on show really into a gesamtkunstwerk. Bettina Steinbrügge and Harald Krejci have chosen 54 austrian and international positions for "Utopie GESAMTKUNSTWERK", among them are Walter Pichler, Joseph Beuys, Liam Gillick, Una Szeemann, Jason Rhoades, Gelitin, Thomas Hirschhorn, Paul McCarthy, Christoph Schlingensief or Markus Schinwald. Until May 20, 2012.

Das 21er Haus eröffnet sein Ausstellungsprogramm mit einem Rückblick auf die historische Idee des Gesamtkunstwerkes. Die von Bettina Steinbrügge und Harald Krejci kuratierten Schau "Utopie GESAMTKUNSTWERK" umfasst die Zeit seit 1960 bis heute. 54 Positionen österreichischer und internationaler Künstler bis hin zu sehr jungen Künstlern, für die die Beschäftigung mit dem Gesamtkunstwerk wieder aktuell ist, sind zu sehen: Walter Pichler, Hermann Nitsch, Joseph Beuys, Liam Gillick, Una Szeemann, Jason Rhoades, Gelitin, Thomas Hirschhorn, Paul McCarthy, Christoph Schlingensief, Markus Schinwald u.a.m. Mit der Ausstellungsarchitektur aus großen schwarzen Kuben, die wie Riesenbauklötzer verstreut sind, hat Esther Stocker nicht nur eine interessante Displaylandschaft für die Exponate geschaffen sonder sich auch dem Thema Gesamtkunstwerk elegant spielerisch angenähert. Gallerist Hans Knoll together with Vasilina Verdi curated this show of contemporary russian artists "Russian Renaissance - Young Russian Art" for Hilger's BROTkunsthalle. Artists: AES+F, Vladimir Anselm, Alexander Brener & Barbara Schurz, Bulnygin, Blue Noses, Kirill Chelushkin, Sergey Chilikov, Ivan Gorshkov, Rina Grinn, Dimitry Gutov, Polina Kanis, Anastasia Khoroshilova, Oleg Kulik, Lena Lapschina, Victoria Lomasko / Anton Nikolaev, Anatoly Osmolovsky, PG Group, Victor Ribas

Der schon vor der Ostöffnung 1989 in Budapest und inzwischen seit mehr als 10 Jahren auch in Moskau tätige Wiener Galerist Hans Knoll kuratierte die Ausstellung "Russian Renaissance - Young Russian Art" zusammen mit Vasilina Verdi für die Hilger BROTkunsthalle. Sie soll einen Überblick nicht nur über aktuelle, bereits etablierte und doch provokante Positionen wie Blue Noses und einer ganz jungen Generation von russischen KünstlerInnen geben und einen Blick auf die russische Kunstszene über Moskau hinaus ermöglichen.

"Zeitzeugen – Photographie in Österreich seit 1945" im k/haus

The Austrian Photographic Society celebrates her 150th anniversary with „Zeit-zeugen – Photographie in Österreich seit 1945“at the k/haus. Works by 120 Photographers from icons like Ernst Haas, Inge Morath and Franz Hubmann to the Aktionisten and the Wiener Gruppe up to the lates trend. Until Jan 29, 2012.

Die Photographische Gesellschaft zeigt anlässlich ihres 150-jährigen Bestehens „Zeit-zeugen – Photographie in Österreich seit 1945“ im k/haus. Neben Ikonen wie Ernst Haas, Inge Morath, Harry Weber, Franz Hubmann, Elfriede Melchjar und Heinz Simonis sind die Aktionisten der Sechziger- und Siebzigerjahre ebenso vertreten wie die Wiener Gruppe mit Valie Export. Vertreter der Photographie als künstlerisches Mittel wie Erwin Wurm, herausragende Werbephotographen bis hin zu trendweisenden, jungen und aufstrebenden Photokünstlern der Gegenwart – insgesamt 120 Positionen sind bis zum 29. Jänner 2012 im k/haus zu sehen.

21 artists showed their works for one day (Dec. 10, 2011) during the third LivingroomBiennale in an appartment in Vienna's fifth district.

21 KünstlerInnen präsentierten ihre Werke bei der dritten Wohnzimmerbiennale am 10. Dez. 2011 für einen Tag in einer WG im fünften Bezirk.

ESSL ART AWARD CEE 2011 at Essl Museum

The Essl Museum shows the winners of the Essl Art Awards CEE 2011. 18 young artists from Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia give insights to what is going on at the local art schools: photographie and new media is challenging classic painting. Till Feb 12, 20112.

Im Essl Museum werden die Essl Art Awards CEE 2011 gezeigt, die heuer zum vierten mal vergeben wurden. 18 Künstler aus Bulgarien, Kroatien, Rumänien, Slovakai, Slovenien, Tschechien und Ungarn geben einen aktuellen Einblick in das Geschehen an den lokalen Kunstakademien der CEE Länder. Neben der Malerei sind auch Fotographie und Medien stark vertreten. 07.12.2011 – 12.02.2012.

David Maljković, Attila Csörgő, Lecia Dole-Recio at SECESSION

The Secession presents David Maljković (HR) in the main hall. He shows only the presentational set up from earlier exhibitions, whithout the actual objects (of art).
Attila Csörgő (H) in his sculptures, photographies and drawings asks kinetik, optical or geometric questions – with surprisingly poetical outcome.
Lecia Dole-Recio (USA) puts paper, cardboard and textile together to surfaces and deconstruct them again in the painting process. Till Feb 5, 2012

Die Secession zeigt im Hauptraum David Maljković (HR), der frühere Arbeiten einer radikalen Neuinszenierung unterwirft. Von den eigentlichen (Kunst)-Objekte entleert zeigt er die für andere Ausstellungen entwickelten Präsentationsstrukturen. Das Konzept zielt darauf ab, die Arbeiten ihres Inhalts zu entleeren und nur das Set-up zu betrachten.
Attila Csörgő (H) stellt in seinen Skulpturen, Fotoarbeiten und Zeichnungen naturwissenschaftliche und technologische Fragen aus Kinetik, Optik oder Geometrie – mit oft unerwarteten, kurzweiligen und poetischen Ergebnissen.
Lecia Dole-Recio (USA) collagiert Papier, Kartonagen und Textilien zu einem Untergrund, den sie nach der malerischen Bearbeitung dekonstruiert. Bis zum 5. Feb. 2012.

Erik van Lieshout - "Erik makes Happy" at BAWAG Contemporary

Erik van Lieshout talkes (in German) at the opening reception about his film "Commission", the centerpiece of the show in the BAWAG Contemporary, and his project "The Shop" at the shopping mall "Zuidplein" near Rotterdam. The show "Erik makes Happy" runs till Jan 29, 2012.

Erik van Lieshout in der BAWAG Contemporary zeigt seinen Film "Commission", um den herum die Ausstellung "Erik makes Happy" konzipiert ist, und sprach über das Projekt eines von ihm betriebenen temporären Shops in der Shopping Mall "Zuidplein" in der Nähe von Rotterdam. Bis 29. Jan. 2012.

Fritz Wotruba Privat Foundation at 21er Haus

Fritz Wotruba's works have found a new home in the 21er Haus. Only a few of the more then 500 sculptures belonging to the Fritz Wotruba Privat Foundation can now be rediscovered downstairs. Besides permanent and temporary exhibitions there is room for storage, archival and office facilities.

Der umfangreiche Nachlass des Bildhauers Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975) hat endlich eine neue Heimstätte im 21er Haus gefunden. Zur Zeit kann eine kleine Übersicht der mehr als 500 Skulpturen im Besitz der Fritz Wotruba Privatstiftung in den neuen Räumen in der Kelleretage wiederentdehkt werden. Neben permanenten und temporären Ausstellungen ist hier Platz für Speicher, Archiv und Büroräume.
