So here's a Friday afternoon post to outline the 3 ways Reprints Desk currently enhances research productivity with PubMed:

1) Start your pubmed searches using this URL (eg bookmarked inside of your browser). This will enable you to see the 'Get Article from Reprints Desk' icon. When clicked from an abstract page, it will auto-populate the citation in Reprints Desk's single article document delivery form.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?otool=reprintdesk

2) Use the ‘Search PubMed’ button in the new Article Galaxy user dashboard. This removes any need to remember the URL or to add a new bookmark to your browser. Clicking this will take you to PubMed and ensure that the "Get Article from Reprints Desk" bookmarklet appears in the user interface as outlined in the screenshot previously presented.

3) Or for something new - you can activate Bibliogo (free to individuals) to multitask:

- Import, save and manage multiple citations

- View price estimates and place multiple document delivery article orders all at once

- Import, monitor, share and order from saved search alerts

Here are a few final screenshots:

With the recent launch of Bibliogo, we've been asked a lot lately "What's the connection between Bibliogo and Article Shelf?"

We have the answer to this question that inquiring minds want to know. But first, let us take a moment to (re-)introduce Bibliogo and Article Shelf.

Bibliogo is our new journal article web app that helps you do more with scientific, technical and medical (STM) papers.

Article Shelf is the solution we introduce customers to when they tell us they need an article archive, repository or product literature database solution. We like to think of Article Shelf as the least expensive and easiest-to-implement citation matching and rights-managed article sharing service on the market for companies with unmediated document delivery workflows.

Now the answer to the question "What's the connection between Bibliogo and Article Shelf?" is simple: they can work together or independently. Reprints Desk customers can implement Bibliogo alone, Article Shelf alone or both together.

Here's some additional information we hope you find useful:

BIBLIOGO ALONE:
• Sharing of PDFs purchased from Reprints Desk is only available at the bibliography workgroup level and only for customers who sign an agreement confirming that they have a Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) or some other reproduction rights organization license that provides them with rights for internal workgroup sharing of journal articles.
• If such a customer orders an article from a bibliography in Bibliogo and the delivery address for the order belongs to one of the bibliography members, the PDF gets delivered into Bibliogo, and a permanent link to open the PDF is made available in Bibliogo to all workgroup members.
• Articles for delivery outside of a Bibliogo workgroup, say to a physician, must be purchased before sending.

ARTICLE SHELF ALONE:
• Article Shelf requires customers to have a rights management solution appropriate for their account configuration (for example, a CCC license with RightSphere or other appropriate publisher agreements may be required depending on the intended use).
• Article Shelf attempts to match all new orders, regardless of order method (Bibliogo, Reprintsdesk.com order form, email, phone, etc.), against articles the workgroup already owns or has access to.
• Customers pay a service fee for every order filled via Article Shelf. Customers pay a royalty fee in addition to the service fee when the user doesn’t have rights to the article.

BIBLIOGO + ARTICLE SHELF
• Customers get the convenience of instant access to purchased articles within small Bibliogo workgroups as well as a blanket cost-savings measure for all new orders.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Visit the Copyright Clearance Center website at www.copyright.com. One particular FAQ you may want to check out this one: Does an Annual Copyright License allow me to do anything I want with copyrighted material?

Doing more with journal articles

Not that the world revolves around us, but hopefully you were able to take note of our announcement today:

New Journal Article Web App ‘Bibliogo’ Simplifies Scientific Research and Medical Marketing

Although we've been told Bibliogo has a coolness factor about it as a scientific collaboration/Web 2.0 productivity tool, what we care most about is making it easier to do more with journal articles and solving painful problems that article stakeholders face today.

To shine a light on some of the needs and desires of article users, we thought it would be useful to publish this blog post and share some recent primary research we conducted.

Take a moment to look at some of the findings we recently presented at the recent Pharma-Bio-Med conference during our presentation entitled 'Bibliographic Management Practices & Scientific Literature Usage.'

We'd love to know what problems you or your users are encountering with journal articles and what you long to do.

Are copyright red flags popping up in your head?

Who owns the rights to print journal you purchased?

What exactly does licensing mean and how can you use licensed databases?

Are works created by fellow employees works in which your employer owns the copyright and can be used freely at work?

So many questions, so little time...well, take a few minutes to test your knowledge on some copyright basics and specific situations.

The quiz and answers were created by Reprints Desk friend and copyright guru Lesley Ellen Harris of copyrightlaws.com (thanks, Lesley!). You can learn more about her and sign up for The Copyright & New Media Law Newsletter at her website.

The recent "Ask the Chefs" feature on SSP's Scholarly Kitchen asked the question "What do you think is the most important trend in publishing today?" The answers ranged from the fallout from budget cuts in research libraries to the dominance of technology companies like Google, Amazon, and Apple to the end of the Big Deal as the business model that facilitated STM's shift to an online business model.

I was particularly pleased to see the solutions-oriented answers around putting content closer to the end-user and the growth of new workflow tools that enhance productivity. Empowering the user and focusing on the customer are never bad business strategies.

And yet I wonder if all publishers appreciate what it means to truly empower the user. Publishers who are overly focused on driving users to their websites often ignore the downstream tools and services where users prefer to discover, curate and socialize content, or access an article inside a workflow that recognizes their particular environment. That environment can recognize whether or not a user has subscription-based access. It can invoice the user's company so the user doesn't have to pull out his credit card to complete a royalty-generating transaction. It can help the user discover content that she might have missed in a Pubmed search.

Users may not start on a publisher's platform, but they can get there if that publisher works with the user's preferred productivity tools. All roads can lead to Rome only if a publisher takes down the roadblocks, which require the user to start and end on their platform.

Granted not all productivity tools are sensitive to publisher concerns like copyright compliance and linking subscribers over, so a publishers looking to empower their readers at their preferred point of engagement need to do their homework. Does the vendor provide regular usage reports to publisher partners? Do they generate revenue for the publisher or just use publisher content as a springboard for their own revenue producing purposes? Do they acknowledge the publisher's IP or attempt to skirt copyright issues? Do they add value to the publisher as well as the end user?

I hope that the chefs' answers to the question will point more publishers toward recognizing the role reputable outside tools (eg document delivery, article collaboration, etc.) have in providing services to end users that individual publishers on their own cannot supply on their own.

Putting you at the center of the Article Galaxy in 2012.

We at Reprints Desk are 100% dedicated to making our customers happy.

Providing visibility into our interactions with your users.

In December 2011, customer administrators will receive self-service access to document delivery customer service details and reports. In addition, you and your users will now also have access to our searchable Get Help knowledgebase of information resources and an easy-to-use help request system that auto-assigns tickets for even greater responsiveness.

Importantly, we also receive a number of suggestions every day. To help prioritize and provide greater transparency about our development roadmap, we will be testing this new tool as a forum for sharing, viewing, and voting on new features and products.
Request more information

Saving time & making navigation easier.

We’ve bundled a lot into our document delivery system – easy ordering, link resolver functionality, workgroup repositories, usage reporting, collection management tools, and more.

For users who login to reprintsdesk.com, we want to make sure they get the most from our system. So sometime between now and January 2012 we’ll be rolling out a more visual Article Dashboard for users. The dashboard will provide an intuitive navigational experience for users to interact with our system and include the capability to display links to time-saving resources.
Request more information

Saving time through federated search integration

Federated search is a discovery technology that enables researchers to simultaneously search across multiple online databases and easily view search results that have been aggregated, ranked, and de-duplicated. Sometime before January 2012, we’ll be integrating search into the literature retrieval workflow. Customers that enable this feature will save time for users by enabling them to simultaneously search multiple discovery environments directly from our new article dashboard.
Request more information

Simplifying literature acquisition,
management and collaboration.

For you and your users, we’ve developed a journal article web app that we call Bibliogo. The app provides powerful alerting, curation, access, collaboration and integrated document delivery tools to simplify what users do with journal article PDFs every day. We’ll be formally announcing the launch of Bibliogo in November 2011, but until then check out the website and contact us to learn more.
Go to bibliogo.com

Helping marketing teams to deploy
ePrints to iPads & the Web.

Bulk copies of articles have always been critical to the evidence-based promotions of companies fueled by intellectual property (IP). And the importance of ePrints has only increased as companies spend more on e-detailing, direct selling and other marketing activities. To meet these needs, we’ve developed the iPad-compatible Article Viewer Mobile App. We’ll be launching this solution to companies like yours and publishers this December 2011. Let us know if you’d like a preview and to discuss the potential value of this solution to users at your company.
Request a preview

We're excited to announce open registration for two new Reprints Desk-sponsored webinars. They will explore best practices for technology solution evaluation by information professionals (e.g. document delivery services) and the rationale for why procurement professionals at Life Science companies should pursue single-source reprints supply. We hope you'll join your peers and participate. Here are additional details and links to register:

Determine Total Cost of Ownership and Minimize Risk of Reprints Spend
October 18, 2011 10:00 am - 11:00 am EDT
view my timezone

Life Science procurement professionals like you regularly help companies improve spend management for visible marketing investments such as media services and printing. However, purchasing of clinical reprints is one marketing spend that often flies under the procurement radar. Reprints costs often reach tens of millions of dollars each year. The potential risks that far exceed this number. This spend may increase with sales force adoption of new technologies such as the iPad.

By attending this webinar, you will see practical steps for sizing up the fragmented reprints spend within your organization. You’ll take away an understanding of the total cost of ownership and how this category spend can be pursued with a low level of effort to help you to reach your annual performance goals.

Evaluating Information Industry Services & Vendors:
Best Practices for Info Pros & IT Staff
October 26, 2011 9:30 am - 10:45 am EDT
view my timezone

The information industry is again changing rapidly. First-time and replacement solutions offer many benefits, but moving forward involves a certain leap of faith. Before working with a new vendor or implementing a new product for you and your own customers, you cannot truly know how things will unfold. Yet without taking these risks and re-evaluating, progress stagnates.

Avoid common pitfalls and take some of the risk out of new solutions and relationships. Learn from experienced peers about engagement approaches, key questions, validation, and contract clauses to insist upon when you expand your portfolio of solutions and suppliers.

When you participate in this session, you will learn to:

* Create or adapt a structured process for evaluation of products and services (new or existing)
* Score solutions based on their business value and total cost of ownership
* Map existing processes and identify benefit of implementing improvements
* Create, communicate and improve business cases for purchasing

Panelists will share real-world examples. The session will include time for Q&A. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the FUMSI Report: Product Evaluation Report and Tool Kit”.

Your panelists include:

* Armand Brevig, Global Director of Sales, Reprints Desk
* Perrin Kerravala, product reviewer for VIP and information manager with Export Development Canada
* Tim Buckley Owen, senior news editor for VIP and information industry journalist and trainer with 25+ years experience

A portion of the proceeds from your orders, our contributions and the work of Room to Read, have enabled a brand new library to be established in Bardiya, Nepal.

This is a great collective achievement with real-world impact!

We’ll post pictures to our Facebook page once we have them, but we didn’t want to delay sharing this good news until then. Please read below for information about the library, Bardiya, and the people of Bardiya.

And there is more good news: through document delivery and reprints transactions, we’ve already raised enough to create a second library!

For the next library, we want you and other valued customers and partners to choose the location. Please take a minute to vote for your prefered location. Voting closes September 30, 2011. Check back to see where we'll build the next library together.

About Bardiya, Nepal

Bardiya lies in the Bheri Zone of mid-western Nepal. The region consists of fertile plains dotted with forests and agricultural lands. Gularia, the district headquarters, lies on the Babai River. Famous for its national parks, Bardiya is the largest and most pristine wilderness area in the Tarai. As an excellent habitat for over thirty different mammal species, Bardiya is home to endangered royal Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinos, wild elephants, swamp deer, and black bucks among others. The majority of people living in this area belong to the Tharu ethnic group, and most of them earn a living as farmers.

Literacy in Bardiya

Currently, Bardiya’s literacy rate is 45%, significantly below the national literacy rate of 64%. This is partially attributed to large populations of migrant farmers. There have been several movements within the past three years to improve the district’s ability to effectively provide educational programs and opportunities. Large, traditional families remain the norm. The typical household consists of a family ranging in size from five to seven. Generally, houses in this region are two to three stories tall and are constructed either from Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) or stone and mud mortar roofed with corrugated iron sheets. Some of the houses have mud tile roofs.

While picturesque, Bardiya has been a district of heavy conflict. It is in the middle of the battle between the Nepali government and the Nepal-Maoist communist party. Over 200 Bardiya residents have lost their lives in the last 10 years. The continual chaos has frayed the district's social and educational infrastructure.

About the Library We’ve Created

The library has already had furniture selected, books selected, field facilitators hired, a memorandum of understanding signed with the government and accepted the delivery of books and materials. The major initiatives for 2011 also included:

Book leveling: In the past, the libraries in Nepal have organized books by subject. This year they have started to classify all of the books that we provide to a library by reading level. This classification strategy enables children with differing reading levels to choose books that are at their comfort level. It also fosters children’s independent use of the library by enabling children to easily self-select books during recess or when they may be using the library unaided by a teacher.

Training: In addition to the furniture and educational resources provided to the library, two trainings have occurred so far:

Phase 1 Training

Length: 3 days

Target Audience: Librarians/teachers/tutors

Topics: library activities, teaching literacy skills and reading

Total Participants: 24 (from 11 other libraries as well)

Phase 2 Training

Length: 2 days

Target Audience: Librarians/teachers/tutors

Total Participants: 27

Topics: book selection, library activities, teaching literacy skills and reading

My colleagues and I consider ourselves to be pretty inquisitive and observant. We like to ask questions, identify trends and generally help out where we can. In thinking about the upcoming SLA 2011 Annual Conference, we wondered, "how could we summarize the session topic trends in a semi-scientific way? What about the trends for the vendors that are exhibiting?"

So, we put a little work in and created un-edited word clouds for the SLA sessions by using the session abstracts and titles. And here's what we found:

SLA 2011 Annual Conference Session Word Cloud

SLA 2011 Annual Conference Vendor/Exhibitor Word Cloud

We would have liked to have seen "document delivery" scale higher. However, we were pleased to see the level of applicable hands-on themes apparent in the session word cloud. For example: practical, basic, effective, value, needs and techniques. We also appreciated the presence of mainstay terms in the vendor cloud: information, research, journals, content, management, science and others.

A little surprising were the over-use of boastful words like "leading" "products" "business" and "years" in the vendor cloud and the under-utilization of words like "strategies" "statistics" "communication" in sessions.

My question for you is whether or not there are any surprises you see in what is showing or missing when you view these SLA word clouds?

Like tax days around the world, an accounting of your finances and your payments are due.

For this reason, Reprints Desk thought it would be nice to give you something for free - the Outsell Insight report entitled: ‘Workflow Tools Enhance Analytics For Corporate Content Management’

The report is particularly timely because corporate budget planning is just around the corner! It explores the value of Pubget’s journal content analytic tool, PaperStats. PaperStats saves you time and money by automating on-demand COUNTER- compliant usage reporting with cost data. It also includes document delivery data in analysis and recommendations. PaperStats is available to the corporate market exclusively through Reprints Desk.

In addition to the Outsell report, be sure to check out:

1) USC Norris Library Case Study - see how they saved time managing their serials

2) Pharma Case Study - see how one corporate library saved nearly $200K (USD) through more accurate subscription-document delivery “load balancing.”

(You may also be surprised to know that transitioning document delivery to subscriptions represented a significant portion of the savings as did better holdings data for the company’s link resolver)

Rather than developing slick technology platforms that users may not need or readily adopt, we pride ourselves on solving actual problems and meeting actual needs for our current and future customers.

Please take a minute to share your thoughts about content usage reporting and tell us about your needs. We’d be happy to explore any challenges you’re facing and see how we can help.

It was a great week at Reprints Desk. We met with new corporate library customers and their customers - researchers and engineers. Additionally, one of those articles that make you say, “Aah, of course” arrived in my inbox courtesy of the Content Management Institute (CMI.) Here’s a brief summary:

CMI Article Summary: The quest to discover perfection.

“A Content Marketing Lesson From the Study of Spaghetti Sauce” begins with excerpts from a Malcolm Gladwell presentation at TED. Mr. Gladwell describes a research experiment done by Howard Moskowitz in the ‘70s. The goal was to find the “perfect” level of sweetness for Diet Pepsi. What formula of Diet Pepsi would be appealing to the largest audience? The findings? There wasn’t one formula for the “perfect” sweetness but, multiple formulas for the “perfect” sweetness.

The findings were later applied to experiments for Prego spaghetti sauce. Forty-five different types of sauce were created. The primary discovery was that Americans preferred one of three groupings of sauce – chunky, plain and spicy. With this knowledge, multiple product lines were developed. The chunky sauce line alone generated more than $600 million in 10 years!

The Take-Away for Information Professionals and Information Service Companies like Reprints Desk

Your equivalent of a successful “chunky” line of spaghetti sauce may be increased end user satisfaction. How do you get to there from here? As an information professional, you serve a diverse set of users - researchers, engineers, medical affairs professionals, and others. Each has different needs, tools and preferred ways of working.

For example, we at Reprints Desk believe you can accomplish this by:

Not limiting your users to a single type of spaghetti sauce. Within a document delivery service, this may mean providing end users with multiple options for integrating with preferred discovery environments – OVID, ScienceDirect, Web of Science and others.

Allowing for multiple, flexible order placement methods – email, online order form without required fields and data

What other variables do you believe are important to your end users?

There are many ways to accommodate users and still have standardized processes that achieve the objectives of your company and of your library. The right information services vendor will be your partner. They will help you to your diverse needs and to devise solutions rather than simply pushing their product.

In Summary

1) There are many types of users

2) It is important to understand the range of their needs & validate a solution and supplier "fit" by securing their input.

3) Be sensitive to user workflows. Just as spaghetti aficionados don’t appreciate being told another sauce is better than their preferred sauce, end users do not appreciate being forced to change behaviors - especially those procedures they deem critical to doing their job effectively.

STM publishing goes mobile

I attended the AAP-PSP conference in Washington, DC the first week of February, which had a central focus on mobile content and apps.

The joke was that lab coats have already been redesigned to accommodate iPads. In three years more users will access the Internet via mobile than desktop, reading mobile chunks on smart phones and fuller content for immersive reading on tablets.

PDFs may not be dead just yet (Geoff Bilder of CrossRef opined 7 more years) because researchers save PDFs for printing out later and because of iPads.

Publishers have started creating mobile-optimized content. For now that means repurposed smaller XML or HTML5. They are even reflowing PDFs so that instead of the standard two-column journal article it flows as one long column.

Device diversity: iPhone has 28% of the market, Blackberry 27%, Android 27%. Each uses a different language. So many publishers creating mobile-optimized websites and then using Open Source standard WURFL http://wurfl.sourceforge.net/ (wireless universal resource file) to deliver a device-specific display.

Since STM content users need to be authenticated and no one really likes usernames and passwords, some publishers using device pairing. Bluetooth uses device pairing. The user gets a pairing code when on a device with IP access to content and then enters that code when on their mobile device so they can have access to full text outside the institutional network.

Interesting publishing trends identified at the meeting:

Expect most journals to become hybrid Open Access in next few years.

Version control and repositories. Reprints Desk’s customers prefer the Article of Record from the publisher's website.

ORCID is Open Researcher & Contributor ID which will increasingly be assigned to authors and linked to the DOIs of the articles they publish.

Some believe that there is an information UNDERflow in biotech because corporate libraries have been closed and access to expensive content cut off. Some believe this is slowing down the drug pipeline. Reprints Desk has a role to play in the making content more available for research-intensive companies.

So, what do you think are trends to watch out for?

- Jan Peterson, Head of Publisher Relations at Reprints Desk

p.s. Stay tuned for Reprints Desk updates on support for the tablet market!

Letting the Power of Social Media Work for Your Library

Now that the novelty of social media is fading, it is time to focus what social media can do for you, your library and your organization. Social media tools are unique. They enable you to connect, to share information and to collaborate. They enable you to do something powerful – build a community. You can use that power to market your library and to provide value to your organization.

Why is building a community through social tools important to you? By using these tools, you are positioning yourself and your library as thought leader. You are embracing leading-edge communication tools. In addition:

Connecting - you can communicate with your community on individual basis rather than a broadcast basis.

Timing – social media tools allow you to share information in real time rather than scheduled intervals.

Marketing – you’re not taking out an ad, you’re part of the conversation. By having a dialog with the community, you are able to anticipate their information needs. You are demonstrating that you deliver value rather than saying that you deliver value.

Social media is a powerful tool. It is essential for the growth of your library. Discover how social media can work for you.

The Article Blog - Beyond Document Delivery & Reprints

Today we're launching our first ever blog. You could say we're jumping on the bandwagon, or the blog-wagon. We like to think of this as an all new article-wagon.

At Reprints Desk we spend countless hours working with our customers and our partners to solve the challenges they face related to:

Copyright-compliant use of peer-reviewed scientific, technical and medical (STM) articles

Document delivery for research

Clinical reprints for sales, marketing, and medical information

Our goal is not simply to sell more of what we have today but, to figure out the next step in making content investments more valuable and making content usage more efficient for clients and partners. This requires understanding every article nuance from the consumer and publisher sides. It also requires taking fresh, "blue sky" approaches to long-standing challenges.

Each interaction is critical to understanding the outcomes that affect us all. Our goal in launching this blog is to make this a shared and transparent journey. We hope you will join us at Reprints Desk as a participant in the conversation, as an advocate and as a customer or partner. Our commitment to you is to make it worth the time and the attention you invest.

Join the conversation. Let us know what article-related issues are on your mind.
