The Story Arthur Miller Didn’t Want Told

Part 2- The Mother

World renowned playwright, Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, All My Sons) and his last wife, photographer Inge Morath had a daughter and then a son. Daniel Miller was born with Down Syndrome, institutionalized and erased from the family at birth.

Egni’s Eye is a mother’s photo journal diary… brought to life! What happens when the baby does not come home? What do you tell your daughter?... your friends?... yourself?!

Egni’s Eye is inspired by the true story of Inge Morath, photojournalist and last wife of playwright Arthur Miller. Egni is a palindrome of Inge’s name that she used to help sell her photography in a post-war world biased against all things Germanic. They met on the set of The Misfits when Miller was still married to Marilyn Monroe. Inge had been hired as set photographer. Miller and Monroe subsequently divorced. Inge and Miller married, had a daughter and three years later a son, Daniel Miller, born with Down Syndrome. His existence was never acknowledged. Neither parents obituaries, Miller's autobiography Timebends or any of their many publications acknowledge Daniel's existence as a member of the Miller family. (VANITY FAIR-Sept 2007- Arthur Miller’s Missing Act)

Theatre Terrific is a pioneer working with artists of all abilities in the rigorous creation of provocative theatre. 26 years strong, Theatre Terrific is Western Canada's oldest inclusive theatre company. Our continued open door policy respects, challenges and supports performers with and without developmental, physical, mental health, race, language and gender issues.

There are few places in Canada where in-depth theatrical research can be explored, without the pressure of developing or performing a new work. Nightswimming's unique Pure Research program provides space, money and resources to artists who are pursuing provocative theatrical questions. This season we are expanding the program beyond Toronto to include sessions held in Edmonton and Vancouver.

October Free Play Day

Theatre Terrific hosted a day of play, work, and composition followed by tea and home-baking. A diverse group of over twenty participants of all abilities spent an autumn afternoon building democratic theatre ensemble guided by Artistic Director Susanna Uchatius. The work culminated in the creation of four short scenes that contained a microcosm of the human experience....fear, joy, jealousy, love and celebration.

The question was asked: What made it possible for you to create together?

The answers given were: Trust...a time limit...the exercises we did before...focusing on other people in the group...different viewpoints opened it up...saying yes to everything...letting go.

"Theatre Terrific supports artists of all abilities in the rigorous creation of provocative theatre." That is exactly what happened on that autumn afternoon of hard work, rigorous creation, warm tea and home made baking.
