Theatrikids Rocks the Blog!

Friday Cast of "Alice"-Last Day of Auditions!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Thu, 13 Oct 2011 17:58:00 +0000

WOW This group ROCKS! ALL of them are EXTREMELY TALENTED! This means I'm making some of the most challenging casting decisions of my career! The shows R Gonna B AMAZING!

Nathan and Sydney read a scene together as the King & Queen of Hearts.

Sydney reads a delightfully evil Queen, and Nathan plays around with different ideas for the "absent-minded King" character.

They had us rolling with laughter--Nathan's "King" was off the charts of absent-minded!

King: "Your Hair looks Lovely Today" Queen: "It does?" King: "Oh Yes"

Queen: "Well...It does EVERYDAY!!"

King: "How true, my Queen... could we have a parade?"

Sydney was VERY professional, and did not break character until the scene was over. Then, Nathan--the master of ad-libbing--took over with improv & we ALL fell into the giggles!

Here, we see Nathan on his knees, reading for Alice's little brother Layne, and reading for a "little" Queen of Hearts is Madison.

Madison can play EVIL just as well as she plays SWEET. She easily brought Nathan's character to tears with her Sweetly Evil portrayal of the Queen.

Here is the whole group that read this scene together. From left to Right, Brittany, Chloe & Bri Nicole read the Queen's mean daughters, the Princesses of Diamonds, Spades & Hearts.

I was believing that Nathan WAS actually scared of them! Great reading by all!

They showed him no love at every turn, and it was pretty cool to see Nathan in such a vulnerable role for a change. Usually, He's the one with the attitude! (That goes for characters he's played AND in real life :)

LOVED IT!!! She pats him on the head, then wipes her hand on him. HAHAHA!

Joe & Sydney read for the Hatter & Alice--great job by both, I may add...

Joe helped me out with some fresh ideas for the Hatter character, which he adds a touch of "Ghetto" to in this reading.

YO, YO, YO--maybe a little "New York" would go with the "Hattah," ya know? Hey, fogettaboutit!"

I like the face expression on Sydney that the camera caught here. She was a solid "Alice" while Joe experimented with ideas for the Ghetto-Thug-Hatter-possibly from NYC. :)

Brittany's "Hint of Southern Honey" accent went perfectly for her reading of the Cheshire Cat, and Madison read a lost "Alice" well alongside her.

Cheshire: "Honey, we're all mad here. I'm mad, you're mad....Errbody here's mad!"

Alice: "Wait a minute, I'm not mad!"

They finished the scene & turned to the camera for a smile! Great job, ladies!!

Here's Chloe's reading for the Queen, and Nathan has been instructed to try a different approach with the King character this time...

Chloe was deeply dynamic in her reading as the Queen realizes her roses have been painted Red...

That is a smirk on her face, made of pure evil... IT was AWESOME! Nathan is still planning his route of attack on which direction to take the King this time...

I think this "King" was a little bit of a "Queen" himself, which was both hilarious & surprising to Chloe as Nathan entered with a great big "Girlfriend!" Chloe did a superb job of keeping her evil facade.

Now, Nathan decides to try to take the character into an even different direction, and Chloe remained poised as he again had the class rolling with laughter.

King: "Can we have a parade?"

Queen: "NO! How absurd!"

Great job working together, you two! It is just a director's joy to watch creativity unfold at every turn!

King: "Oh, well. Never Mind painting Roses Today Boys!"

Bri Nicole takes the stage, reading for the Queen, and I want to point out that her body language was BRILLIANTLY PRONOUNCED & changed according to the dynamics of the Queen's Building Anger. Her hands make fists & rise slightly to her side, indicating her "noticing" & later "being ANGERED" that her flowers have been painted. Subtle, yet excellent dynamic characterization choices as an actor. Super Bri!

And, continuing with the ever-evolving character of the King, Joe takes a phone call as the King, who annoys the Queen even more with his new-found multi-media popularity.

Bri Nicole did a great job of listening to see "where Joe was going" with the King this time...

He then cracked us all up by "taking a call" in the middle of the scene.

King: "Hold that thought. I've gotta get this..."

King: "Let me just text him back real quick..."

YEP. We knew it was coming.... No Queen of Hearts would allow her King to use up her minutes on their combined cell phone plan. Not even with roll-over.

Ah! Now this is a twist that I bet you didn't see coming. Nathan decided he wanted to read for the Queen. Yes, The Queen. A very MANLY Queen, which made for quite a delightful reading.

Brittany did a good job as the absent-minded King, but Nathan's Masculine and Demanding Portrayal of the Queen left no room for an emotional relationship between the two characters, since "she" definitely "wore the pants!"

What ANGER! What COMPLEXITY! What a Fierce and Exploding "Queen" Nathan played!

And now, back to "normality". Brittany played a vibrantly energetic Queen, but you wouldn't want to get on her bad side!

Ummm...Nathan? That might be her "bad side."

There ya go. Now you're back on her good side. HAHAHA, :)

Uh-oh...The Queen is not happy...

Careful, there Nathan... you're talking to the Queen of Hearts...

I love this shot of Brittany's facial expression, which shows the "calm before the storm" of the Queen's disapproval of her flowers being painted red. I never got a good shot of Brittany exploding with anger, but she NAILED IT!

I agreed to give Madison a shot at playing the Queen, and I just love how she pinpointed the body language to a "T."

A very sharply animated Queen, her moves were all very concise and added to the intimidating presence of her portrayal of the Queen of Hearts!

And a fun contrast to our evil little Queen, Joe surprised us all by choosing to play a "Depression-stricken" version of the King of Hearts, and it was HILARIOUS!! What a creative guy, that Joe is!!

We all ROARED with laughter when Joe had to "take his antidepressant medication" in the middle of the scene.

That didn't phase our young Queen Madison, though!

She was just as evil as ever, regardless of the King's condition.

Which made his character fall deeper into his "depression." IT WAS BRILLIANT!! So much fun!

Brittany prepared both a solo audition piece for singing AND one to exhibit her dancing skills. Um, WOW MUCH?! :D

She brought to Director Erin Byrne's attention that she was only ONE of the experienced dancers in the class, and Director thought "Hmmmm..."

Brittany had choreographed her dance audition-piece by herself, so Director Erin Byrne has decided to put her skills and others with dance/choreography experience in the cast to good use!

THEY'RE GOING TO BE THIS SHOW'S TEAM OF CHOREOGRAPHERS! NOW I REALLY CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SHOWS! <3 Erin :)

Monday Class has GREAT IDEAS!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Fri, 07 Oct 2011 19:38:00 +0000

This is not your average boy with a furry blue head--No-no! This is Christopher, improvising a scene with a "monster" character he created. We proceeded to take it in a direction he didn't like, so the monster may or may not make an appearance in the final script, but it was TOTAL CREATIVITY IN ACTION! With a furry blue head. :)

Jackson decided he'd like to try this scene as a, forgive the pun--"Jack"-Rabbit. His ears needed some placement before we read thru the scene...

The ears were a nuisance, and for that reason I almost want to write in a little flip-floppy-earred Jack-Rabbit into the show, but it'd probably get annoying 4 Jack.

Let's not ignore Katie's "ensemble," as she read for royalty. She did a loose wrap-around look here, as the Mean Princess...

Jack already had his lines MEMORIZED after we read thru the scene like 2wice! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?!

It was SO AWESOME, in fact, that as a closer....

Jack had a "dramatic death scene."

Now, here's where we start picking up some energy! Get Logan on Stage & He may burst spontaneously into dance!

Curiously, so does Kaley, whom he reads this scene with. The camera catches only blurrs of these sensationally animated actors quite often!

They had AWESOME stage chemistry, too! From a director's view, I think they'll work EXCEPTIONALLY WELL together...

They would stand really far apart from each other....

Then one of them would do something to freak the other one out, like lunge forward suddenly, as Logan did here...

So, Kaley dashes to his Right, staying in character...

And then--WHOA!! We actually were in Wonderland for a second! TRIPPY!

"On behalf of all the madness that surrounds us, I welcome you to Wonderland"

"Right, well...I'm just gonna go..." CUE LOGAN: blocking her exit route!

And then suddenly he steps very far away....

And, he lunges back suddenly, getting a tiny giggle out of Kaley, who only broke character because it was the end of the scene. We all had a giggle--it was a nice touch of spontaneity that Logan brought to the scene, and Kaley responded by giving it right back! AWESOME DIRECTOR MOMENT! (tear! :)

I would like to point out that my Gentle-hearted teacher's assistant, Logan (in the Orange shirt) not only agreed to do this scene on his knees (actually, I think he wanted to, he felt tall--what's that like?), but also helped the younger actors read the more difficult words in the scene, making it flow smoother. THANKS, LOGAN!!

That looks like a "No, it was you" Moment between Christopher (far right) & Brendan (Center)

What a GREAT FACE!! LOVE IT! :)

Kaley was a real mentor to Jack in this scene that they read together. OMG--SO CUTE!! HAPPY DIRECTOR MOMENT (Tear! :)

Here, as Brendan takes a Gladiator-like stance for this scene, we see that the lovely Katie has chosen 2 use the same Very Long Scarf, but Tosses it as a Royal Shawl around her neck as she reads for The Queen...

Wow, how'd she make it look like a Royal Robe? Like a cape... Cool! And Brendan is pointing at something that isn't actually there, BUT--that's good ACTING, because it looks like he's looking & pointing at something or someone... WOWWW....

Logan entertains us all with his antics throughout class. Here, he is reading for the King of Hearts, whom he and I discussed a few "directions" the character could "go."

He did a funny, absent-minded King, and used his script as a prop, being clumsy and yet graceful, like a clown!

Ah, here we have a nice calm scene with very little movement....

AHHH! Wait! I was wrong! I most definitely spoke too soon on that one, and like everyone else, we did NOT see that action comin'! Christopher wanted it that way... And then....

Things became normal in the scene again...Ahh, nice and calm and relaxing, until...

Alivia! starts waving her scarf wildly in the air, and Christopher, not wanting to see the DANGER, pulls his hat over his eyes....WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?!

Christopher makes a dash outward, an interesting and unique way for the "Hatter" to introduce himself in this scene... Curiouser and curiouser.... :D

And they are still for the end of the scene... STANDING OVATION, BRAVO! BRAVA!!

Now, where could Jack have gone? Has anyone seen him? Uh-oh. We lost Jack!!

OH YEAH! He was waiting patiently to be unveiled! I love the look he has on his face as his character is mad at my character for taking him prisoner.... Doesn't he look like he might burst from the pent-up anger! LOVE IT!

And then he falls right into place as the "smart-alec" or the "wise-guy" also sometimes referred to as the "Sarcastic Mr.-Know-It-All" of this scene, and it's like he'd studied for the role!!

Sometimes he needed a cue line read to him. Sometimes he didn't!

AWWW! Kaley's helpin' him out again, except she's supposed to be the evil Queen in this scene...

Wait for it...

JACK: BLEEAAHHHH! (Director Screams, falls over frozen in terror, Logan--lovliest of teaching assistants-- picks Erin back up, puts her back into the scene, then says "Action!" Scene is over, Logan says "Cut! That's a Wrap!"

Brendan chose a Michael Jackson song to sing for his solo audition piece, and really did a FANTASTIC JOB!!

Katie sang very well also, and chose a very soulful song to sing for us. I was BLOWN AWAY with how pretty her voice was!

BUT...THIS IS WHERE THE PARTY STARTS! Ya'll R NOT READY 4 THIS RIGHT HERE....

I should've made this into a slideshow...

but I got video as well....

And lemme just say, for the record--this kid can dance! Totallly natural, 100% untrained...

He gets down!

He takes over the dance floor!

Here, he REALLY GOT DOWN!

And got right back up for more...

Look at him dash around all over the place!

Look at his facial expression! This kid is mo' Gangstah than I knew!

And a nice, big, Rock N Roll Style Finish! SWEEEET! But WAIT... is there more?!

He's not even done yet, ya'll! GO LOGAN! GO LOGAN! GO LOGAN!

There's a couple videos at the end of the post too...Wait...who does this remind me of? Hmmm...

OH YEAH!! Kaley likes to tear up a dance flo' too!!

And this young lady, like Logan, doesn't have a shy bone in her body!

GO KALEY! GO KALEY! GO KALEY!

Watch how much ground she covers! She's all. over. the. place!

Wait, is she done! Should we applaud? Lets see....

Ya'll knew she wasn't done! She's going OFF!

I dance over here! I dance over there!

I boogie down all over everywhere!

I feel a big finish coming on...

Wait for it...

THE GUITAR POSE! OH WHAT A ROCK N ROLL ENDING! Nice :)

AND NOW... A COUPLE OF VIDEOS, AS PROMISED, FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT...

Fri. Advanced Class "Alice" 1st Rehearsal a WILD SUCCESS!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 04 Oct 2011 13:23:00 +0000

This is Joe, from the Friday class, with an "Ace of Hearts" costume on. We were thinking these simple-to-make costumes would be great 4 the show! (Well, maybe not the head-pieces, but Joe was a sport and put it on anyway 4 me :) He's got a big heart, that kid--about as big as the one on his head in this picture :)

Bronwyn (Left) and Chloe (right) read a great scene together as "Alice" & the "Cheshire Cat," and Honey Chile, you couldn't have fit more Southern attitude-meets British confusion on that stage! Great job, girls!

Amber (left) had to keep a straight face while Alex (center) & Nathan (right) literally ran circles around her during this reading of a Tea Party Scene. Good times :)

Bri Nicole (Left) read a perfectly lost & hurried "Alice" who meets the "Mad Hatter" in this scene, read by the always animated and never predictable Joe.

Here, we have a delightful scene read by Julia (Left), and from left to right: Kolin, Alex & Nathan. Note: It was Alex's Birthday that day, and the combined voices of the entire cast sounded AMAZING singing "Happy Birthday" to him at the end of class :) YAY! Super-Happy Director Moment!

From Left to Right, Madison, Sydney, Bronwyn & Chloe did a phenomenal job reading this scene when Alice's little sister meets the Mean group of Princesses... I only wish I'd been able to get better pictures of Madison, Sydney & Deandra's later reading of the 3 Princesses--it had all the attitude in the world! My camera-phone just wasn't cooperating. :(

And here's Joe & Julia, reading a scene together. As you can see from Julia's face, Joe is hard to predict as an actor. That's what makes him so much fun to work with!

You have to give him plenty of space... His spontaneity knows no boundaries!

And speaking of working with spontaneity & knowing no boundaries, here is a blurry Nathan falling onto the floor in reaction to the Queen ordering "Off with their heads!"

This is just before Nathan fell to the floor in tears, and we see Kolin on his knees, accusing the others of painting the Queen's Roses Red. "Not me, my queen! It was the Three!"

Nathan, master of "ad-libs," Nathan told the Queen that he was actually painting the Roses Blue, so he was most definitely totally & completely innocent of any crime, what-so-ever.

Here's a great shot of the Anger that the Queen of Hearts can bellow out--Julia did a thunderous reading of her majesty.

Long-time pals Kolin & Amber work so well together as they've known each other since 3rd grade. Amber looks as if she frightened Kolin a bit during this scene reading, doesn't she? It was wonderful to watch!

It made for a realistic twist on the King of Hearts relationship to the Queen. Don't let that skirt fool ya, she wears the pants!

Ah, here's Joe again, falling all over the floor with a different spin on a half-sized, very clumsy Mad Hatter.

...Who had the balance and grace of Humpty Dumpty...

...And the height of, well, about half of an "Alice," read by Julia.

He could barely see out from under his (as he imagined) "over-sized" hat, the poor, shrinking Hatter.

"On behalf of Madness, I welcome you to Wonderland!"

Kolin took a more traditional, gentlemanly route with the Hatter, although he spiced it up with delightful Madness here & there, including a bell kick and some maniacal laughter that tickled us all!

And I must say, Bri Nicole read well for all the parts! From the New-York style Cheshire Cat to the innocent Alice, her diverse and dynamic characterization skills were top-of-the-class!

Here's an appropriately nervous Bronwyn (Left) reacting to Brittany's HUGELY Scary reading of the Queen of Hearts. She set the stage on fire with her thunder!

Brittany also made sure to add that special dash of madness to her characterization of the Queen.

It was fun to watch her turn Nathan into a shriveling mess, just by inching closer to him...

Soon, they were all begging to keep their heads, and Britttany played it super-cool... then turned straight COLD & ordered their heads cut off! An excellent reading, and wonderful interaction by fellow cast members (from Left to Right) Kolin, Nathan, Alex & Sydney, who begged for their lives, to no avail.

I don't think Amber (Right) saw this outburst coming from Bri Nicole's reading of the Wicked Queen, and it was wonderful to watch one powerful actress scare the daylights out of another powerful actress, and they both kept character & continued the scene like champs! :) Happy Director Moment!!

I liked Amber's (Left, on her knees) version of the "King of Hearts" character--it was delightfully blubbering & hard to understand, which was how I'd pictured it, but with better ad-libbing!

Good thing Adam Gavin was there!--his arm & camera viewer are shown on the Right of this shot. He was Filming just about every minute of the fun! Some of the videos have already been posted to theatrikids YOUTUBE channel! Have you subscribed yet? Well, if not--you're missing all the action! Check out http://youtube.com/theatrikids NOW & SUBSCRIBE!

By the time it was Bri Nicole's turn to read for the Queen, Sydney (sneaking from the Left) & the Boys (Left to Right: Kolin, Nathan & Alex) had performed this scene so many times, it must've felt like a 6-week run on Broadway. Bri Nicole's introverted and quiet introduction into this scene, as she, the Queen, discovers her flowers painted, was all the more ominous as they all cried and scattered around her, waiting for the worst...

CARD: "Not me, the Three!" QUEEN: "Oh, you?" CARD: "No! Two!"

Hmmmm.... the Queen has them stirring with antici............pation!

"He's to blame! The Ace! The Ace!"

"Not me, your grace!"

By the time Sydney (Center) speaks, it looks like the Queen almost believes them... Maybe she'll be nice and spare their lives!

Yes, perhaps she won't explode with fury and say...

"OFF WITH YOUR HEADS!" Oh, she did... Nathan straight fainted, DSC. Nice.

And lastly, the lovely Deandra models every costume piece I had brought with me that day, with the exception of perhaps 1 or 2 little, unnecessary items. I mean, 2 hats is plenty, right? Or should she try for 3 or 4? Whatever makes her smile :)

Seriously, my camera-phone couldn't handle all the excitement, and many of the pictures didn't turn out. SO... please check out Theatrikids YOU TUBE Channel for more footage!

Do it now! Before the Queen Discovers you painting her flowers instead of watching us on Youtube! Hurry! :p

2nd Rehearsal of "Alice" ROCKED!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Fri, 30 Sep 2011 17:57:00 +0000

Christopher (Left) and Logan (Right) Worked extremely well together and shared MANY ideas for the script with Director Erin Byrne!

Director Erin Byrne (Far Left) assisted the actors in this scene about Alice's Little Brother, played by Jackson (Left) meeting the 3 Princesses (from Left to Right, Shelby, Amber & Alivia)

Amber (center, with arms up) was hard for the camera to catch, but her antics were hilarious!

Here, we see actors (from Left to Right: Brendan, Logan, Christopher & Chloe) reading a scene where the Queen of Hearts catches her "playing card-servants" painting her roses red.

Chloe was a comical and insanely scary "Queen of Hearts," and the boys in the scene didn't know whether to laugh or run away!

Uh-oh! Nowhere left to run or hide from this mean Queen!

As we see here, Chloe is actually a very nice young lady, and her reading of the Scary Queen was pure Acting, at its finest!

This was a GREAT reading of Alice meeting the Cheshire Cat done by Kaley (Left) and Katie (Right).

They both displayed tremendous ATTITUDE with their roles, and I'm thinking both girls can EASILY play a "DIVA" very well!

And speaking of playing the part of a "Diva" well, here we see Mr. Kolin P. in full Cheshire Cat Attire, who was asked by director Erin Byrne to play the Diva Cheshire Cat so we could all "see how it's done!"

We couldn't quite capture the magic of it all, but Kolin (Left) read a FABULOUS Cheshire Cat with all the Diva attitude in the world. Partnered with him (Right) is Sydney, who read an extremely proper "Alice" and did not break character despite Kolin's wild antics.

Kolin (left) had to giggle a little, and who can blame him, but Sydney held the scene together. After the reading, Kolin marched right up to Director Erin Byrne and said, "YOU OWE ME!" Dually noted, dear Kolin. Great job!

This scene, although read VERY well by (from Left to Right) Amber, Kolin & Kaley, will likely be cut from the final script. It was part of the tea party, and they could hardly stay in character while entertaining us with their portrayals.

Sydney (Left) and Kaley (Right) pose for a hug.

THESE GUYS WERE DOWNRIGHT HILARIOUS!! From Left to Right, Brendan, Christopher & Jackson read this funny tea party scene & got a HUGE response from the audience! Great Job, Guys!

"Clean Cup! Move Down!" And they all change seats. HAHAHAHA! Too funny!

Here, Director Erin Byrne (Left) is caught in a funny moment of "Hmmm" while Logan (center) and Katie (Right) read the same funny Tea Party scene as the 3 boys listed above. Again, HUGE audience response!

MAD HATTER: "I've Got a Wonderful Idea!" MARCH HARE: "What is it?" HATTER: "Let's change the subject!"

Shelby (right) EXPLODED with stage presence as the Diva Cheshire Cat! She is pictured here with Chloe (center) and Alivia (right).

A cute showing of "helping your fellow cast members out," Chloe (center) helped the girls with the difficult words in the script. Alivia (Right) did a wonderful reading of "Alice!"

1st Rehearsal of "Alice & The Lonely Hearts Club Band"

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Fri, 23 Sep 2011 17:07:00 +0000

1st Day of "Alice & The Lonely Hearts Club Band" Rehearsals Were a Success!! WOW-what a STRONG group of performers!

Bronwyn read a frightening Queen of Hearts in this scene with (from left to right) Kolin, Joe, Bronwyn and Chloe there in the back to the far right.

Kaley getting into character for a very dramatic and silly role. Not a big stretch for this talented starlet! :)

Here, we have a scene that was read well by these girls, but we all agreed it probably won't make the final cut of the script. From left to right, pictured are: Deandra, Sydney, Kaley & Taylor.

"He did it, your majesty!"

"No, HE is to blame, my Queen!"

"ENOUGH has been said! OFF with BOTH of your HEADS!"

Chloe (left) and Bronwyn (right) worked so well together, you'd think they'd been friends for years!

Their comedic timing together was perfect, although this will be the first Theatrikids production they've worked on together.

See what I mean? They had us rolling on the floor with laughter!

Speaking of having us rolling on the floor with laughter...Is it obvious that these 2 "Veteran" Theatrikids students (Kolin on left, Joe right) have worked together before? :)

Kolin (left) appeared as "Dewey Finn" and "Theo" in Theatrikids' "School of Rock-The Musical!" while Joe was the very animated "Spyder, " or as he often said, "Spyderrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!" Chloe did a great job not breaking character to laugh at this comedic duo when they read this scene.

Veteran Theatrikids' Students Kaley (left) & Taylor (right) love working together, as we can see here :) Awwwwwwww...

We were happy to meet new Theatrikids student Deandra, whose reading of the Cheshire Cat was priceless!

Kolin & Joe, caught at a moment of "Wait, what was that line?" Director & Playwright Erin Byrne relies on the ideas of the students to build the plot and develop the characters into a Masterpiece of a show!

"What was that, my Queen?"

Sydney (left) and Kaley (right) are quite poised and proper for this tea party scene.

We're not quite sure why Taylor (right) chose to wear the wolf-head for this scene, but it did add a certain flair!

Deandra (far left) had a great time with the "Cheshire Cat's tail" prop! We almost couldn't get it back from her!

Here's Taylor trying the scene without the wolf hat. I am still trying to figure out what the heck is pictured on her shirt...

After this reading of the tea party scene, which I made them do sitting, then again standing, it was Sydney (pictured center, green shirt) that made the comment "sitting or standing, that scene doesn't really work." We all agreed, and they took lots of time thanking me SO much for making them run through it twice, especially since it was rather confusing. You're welcome, ladies--That's what Directors are here for--making you do everything over & over! :)

And Finally...
Below Are Some Videos We Took in Class, but Miss Erin's phone was so low on memory, the tea party scene came out choppy. DON'T MISS KOLIN'S VOCAL AUDITION OF "LET IT BE"--That young man has some PIPES! I also want to note that it is his own Original rendition of the song, and an extremely IMPRESSIVE INTERPRETATION for someone of his age!

Theatrikids' Stars in the Spotlight: Alex, Stephen & Nathan!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 03 May 2011 20:02:00 +0000

Theatrikids Presents...

Stars in the Spotlight! Featured this week: Alex, Stephen & Nathan!

Talk about non-stop entertainment, these guys really keep rehearsals alive with excitement! From left to right, pictured here is Stephen, Alex & Nathan, and let me tell you--the laughs never end with this group!

Here are a few shots of us playing an acting game at the end of class. The object of the game is to act out a word that the teacher has given a clue about, like: "this word rhymes with _______."

Here we see the laughter beginning as the 3 boys attempt to communicate what word they want to act out as a team.

Stephen has a good idea, and the boys pause their laughter to get some insight.

And here we are acting out the word "flail." Nathan has "flailed" right off camera, and is likely "flailing" at the girls on the other team.

The boys are considering acting out words like "jail" but their creativity spawns yet more giggles.

Here they are attempting to regain composure and think of some more ideas, but alas...

The laughter cannot be contained. Stephen has buried his head in his shirt to avoid the picture.

Here we have Alex as "Leonard" behind the drums. "Leonard" is a nerd, but Alex is a total jock in real life. Alex is also playing the part of "Theo" in School of Rock, and has to kick "Dewey" out of the band.

Stephen will likely be less than thrilled at me for posting this pic, but here he is shown wearing his "Spyder" wig. "Spyder" replaces "Dewey" in the band, and Stephen plays the character as a delightfully slow & intellectually-challenged guy. He also plays "Zach," without the wig.

Oops, this pic is sideways, but the comaradary between Nathan ("Dewey") and Alex ("Theo"/"Leonard") is obvious, and they're veterans of many musical productions together.

Although this is Stephen's first Theatrikids production, he and the other boys work so well together that it seems like he's been on the Theatrikids crew for years! Not to mention the boy can sing! His rendition of "Heal Me, I'm Heartsick" will make you cry!

The spirit of Rock n Roll lives!

Even in funny wigs! RAWK ON!

Theatrikids' Stars in the Spotlight: Kaley and Kylen!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 19 Apr 2011 20:35:00 +0000

This week in the Spotlight: Kaley and Kylen!

Here's Kylen (left) and Kaley (right) demonstrating some of their more emotionally dynamic face expressions. Oh, they have plenty more to show, too--these 2 young ladies can be unpredictably hilarious during rehearsals!

Here's Kaley with antennae over the studious Kylen, who has her attention on her script.

And speaking of Kylen's script... here she is proudly displaying her Act II papers that were dropped into a pool! Lucky for us, Kylen saved her script from drowning, and besides a few wrinkles, it looked great! Way to think fast, kiddo! (And, thank-you for studying your lines, even if it was by the pool!) :)

Kaley likes to dance. And dance, and dance. And sing! And dance some more. We like her dancing everywhere during rehearsal. It adds a cheerful element to rehearsals. Here are some pics of her dancing, and Kylen joins her sometimes....

Uh-oh, she collapsed into giggles on the floor. We better see if Kylen danced herself silly too...

Wow, it appears she did too. No wait! This is the scene where they're supposed to do that. I just can't recall when that happens in the script. Hmmm... must've been one of those moments we added in class that Ms. Erin didn't get the memo about. Well, the show will be great anyway! Even if they re-wrote the ending & they all crash out and start snoring--kids are cute when they're asleep, right? :)

One day, Kylen and Kaley both brought their little pink video cameras to class...

It was a BIG HIT with the boys, as you can tell from Nathan's willingness to cooperate in this pic! :)

These girls are great friends on stage and off, and that definitely comes across nicely in the play. Plus, both of them have beautiful singing voices! They each have a solo singing part AND share the duet, "Teacher's Pet" in "School of Rock-The Musical!" Below are their audition videos, as well as some hilarious footage of Kaley dancing up a storm. Enjoy!

Theatrikids' Stars in the Spotlight: Landon & Joe!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 05 Apr 2011 11:08:00 +0000

Theatrikids' Stars in the Spotlight- Featured this week: Landon & Joe!

Here they are-posing sweetly for the picture! Landon is on the left, Joe on the right.

Don't let these wild faces fool you, these 2 young men are always on task in class!

Here they are waiting patiently to practice their scenes.

Landon had practiced bongo-style drumming a little too much this day! He plays "Freddy" the opinionated drummer in "School of Rock-The Musical!"

Joe is one of the most animated actors I've ever worked with, and his rendition of the character "Spyder" is gut-bustingly hilarious!

Not sure what sort of frog-like pirate Landon was portraying here, but I had to capture the moment with a pic!

Joe entertains fellow classmate, Jacob by borrowing Jacob's Cowboy's hat & pretending to watch the game. Good times!

Here, Ryan joins in the fun as we all celebrate the joy of wearing hats!

Landon does the funniest impression of "The Yoda Lady" in the show, and I've been too busy laughing to remember to take a picture of him doing that scene. You'll just have to come to the shows to see it!

Joe just started taking guitar lessons from Director Erin Byrne, and quickly discovered that he's a natural at playing and singing at the same time. He aspires to sing & play the song "Heal Me, I'm Heartsick" live on stage at the show!

Theatrikids' Stars in the Spotlight: Sydney, Addison & Ge'Leya!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Fri, 25 Mar 2011 13:55:00 +0000

In the Spotlight This Week:

Sydney, Addie & Ge'Ge!

From Left to Right, Sydney, Addison & Ge'Leya are working together in the Monday "School of Rock" cast, and LOVIN' IT!

Here the 3 of them are at the head of the class!

Ge'Leya, or GeGe (pronounced Jee-Jee) as we fondly call her, plays "Katie," the cello turned bass player of the band in the show, and she's written in a special surprise song that she'll sing in the finale number... I can't wait!

Sydney plays "Summer Hathaway," who makes the natural transition from "Class Factotum" (aka "braniac") to "Band Manager" in the show. Some of her lines are pretty tricky, including words like "anatomy" and "physiology"--but seriously--what the heck is a "Factotum" supposed to say besides the hardest words EVER!

Here, Addison gives fellow cast member Kolin ("Dewey") a hug after he declares "Time for Recess!" Addison added the hug into the scene, and it nicely portrayed her character, "Alicia" as a girl with a sparkling yet sometimes mischievous personality. Hey! That's almost JUST like Addie! What a strong choice as an actress, to put herself into the role!

Check Out Our Spotlight Stars' Audition Videos!

The above videos are auditions except for Sydney, who managed to side-swipe the audition process somehow. So, I threw in some footage of her & the rest of her cast in last semester's production

of "There Go The Beatles!"-an original Theatrikids Rock-Musical! I did go ahead and include a pic of Sydney "Rawkin' Out!" below:

She didn't need any head-banging direction from me--she naturally went wild!

After we worked on this scene, the 3 girls asked to go run lines in the other room. I said that was okay, as long as they REALLY worked on their lines, and guess what I found them doing when I checked on them later...

THEY WERE RUNNING LINES! So, I returned to the classroom with the rest of the class. After a bit, I decided to check on them again, only to discover that as soon as I had left them alone, they started...

RUNNING THEIR LINES AGAIN!! What absolute angels! What model students! What over-achievers! It's enough to make a director cry, oh no--TEAR! sniffle, tissue, oh, I'm okay--Just very proud of these students of mine. Such Stars!

Theatrikids' Stars in the Spotlight: Ryan & Jacob!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Wed, 23 Mar 2011 04:41:00 +0000

I've decided to begin a weekly blog topic that

will feature Theatrikids' students.

It's called, "Stars in the Spotlight!" In the Spotlight this week: Ryan and Jacob!

Ryan (left) and Jacob (right) are friends both on and off stage, and they are so much fun to work with!

Obviously, these boys are both extremely shy and hardly ever show off their talents in front of others. (HAHAHAHAAA!--j/k)

Both of them are extremely good dancers, actors & only recently have begun to explore their singing talents as well! Here are their audition videos from "School of Rock-The Musical!" (below) * Please visit Theatrikids' Youtube channel youtube.com/theatrikids to read more & SUBSCRIBE!

Here is a funny commercial that Ryan & Jacob wrote & starred in together when they did a Summer Camp at Theatrikids:

Ugg-Spray! Buy Yours Today! :P

Here are some more pics that capture the

personalities of this dynamic duo...

These boys are so creative & so much fun to work with,
it's a joy to have them in my class!
RYAN & JACOB--You guys officially RAWK! --Erin

The 2 "Dewey's" in Mon School of RAWK class

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 15 Mar 2011 23:41:00 +0000

It's DEWEY FINN VS. DEWEY FINN--LIVE! Every Monday Night at Theatrikids' "School of Rock" Rehearsal! Here's the line-up:

Mason G. (left) is "Dewey Finn" & his long-time friend & biggest rival is Kolin P. (right) also "Dewey Finn"

The Plot thickens...

While Mason is the lead singer in the Uber-rockin' band "Speed Limit 180," Kolin could brag that he got the lead part in both "Grease" & "High School Musical," both of which Mason played strong supporting roles in the same production. So, these guys have been battling over lead parts for years now, and auditions for "School of Rock-The Musical!" were, well... INTENSE! See for yourself...

So, as you probably already guessed, BOTH boys got the lead. After all, they would've gone from rivals to mortal enemies if I hadn't double-cast the role of "Dewey!" Not to mention they'd NEVER forgive the director, the talented and awesome Ms. Erin Byrne, who rocks.

...& they all lived happily ever after

~ The End ~

Auditions Videos from "School of Rock-The Musical!"

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Mon, 14 Mar 2011 02:35:00 +0000

Here are some of the more notable audition videos I caught with my phone, and I'll post more this week!

This is a reading from a scene from "School of Rock-The Musical!" that actually didn't make it into the final cut of the script.

Here we have an impromptu version of Nathan & Erin doing a song that Erin doesn't know how to play. Great job Nathan, good try, Erin.

Kaley does a great job singing a song that Erin actually does know because she wrote it. The song is "Perfect Life," and was featured in the original Theatrikids Musical "There Go the Beatles!"

Is this girl part nightingale or canary? One thing's for sure-Zoe sure can sing, and she proves it on this audition by singing this song, titled "Grenade."

EVERYONE! Connie Francis, Singing Legend is on Twitter! Follow Her: @LegendaryConnie

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Fri, 11 Mar 2011 23:47:00 +0000

This is my singing IDOL, Ms. Connie Francis, holding up a hand-written note with her Twitter handle to prove it REALLY IS HER! No one on Twitter believed it was actually "The Connie Francis" who created a Twitter account on March 8th, 2011 and followed over 1,000 Twitter-ers, but it REALLY IS HER!
This is the weird part... SHE FOLLOWED ME! That's right, I woke up, and CONNIE FRANCIS was following me on Twitter!! She's one of the LEGENDS! Seriously, right up there with Patsy Cline! Here's some videos of her, so you'll see 4 yourself how fabulous she is!

OMG-SHE IS AN ORIGINAL ROCK STAR!

I love her dress, her style, her attitude, her voice, &-GASP!-her amazing stage presence in this song (above) called "Many May Tears Ago" from 1960.

Check her out-she can sing in English as well as she can in Italian, German, Spanish, and I'm pretty sure... that it's her singing in Japanese!

WOW! It's a good day when you wake up and Connie Francis is following you on Twitter!
THANK-YOU, CONNIE for making my day, and quite possibly my whole life!

Theatrikids- Nickelodeon's "Best Summer Camp" Award Winner!

Here is a small example of one of the original commercials we wrote and filmed in a Film Acting Camp a few semesters ago...It's called "Ninja Furniture!"

My Dear, Sweet, Obedient Tuesday Class!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Thu, 10 Mar 2011 20:55:00 +0000

Well, I must say-The Tues. School of Rock Class has exciting moments at every turn, although that is somewhat of a scary thing for a Director to experience, but hey--that's children's theatre for ya, right? I love my job so much!

Here are Jaelyn & Kaley showing off some stylin' rock looks that are sure to be the next craze!

We're singin "I Wanna Rock!" Check out Jaelyn in the Rockstar Purple wig! That didn't last 5 minutes :)

Little Known Fact: Jaelyn is a talented drummer in real life! She played the last Hairy Mann Festival in RR!

I so love Alex's "Dire Straits, 1980" look. That kid makes ANY look work!

Kaley is supposed to remove Nathan's hat during the "show," and I'm pretty sure it's her favorite part. Of this show & probably every other one she's ever done.

Here's a demonstration of "How to Pose for An Album Cover" by Alex and Stephen.

Alex liked to sit behind the drums, but not so much actually play them. Most kids are the opposite!

Here we see the 1st of many of Stephen's portrayal of "Spyder's secret handshake," which happens like 8 times in the show. That's what you call a "motif!"

Yeah, Nathan ended up on the floor a few times. His character ("Dewey") knocks himself out stage-diving & has other clumsy comic relief-spills. That's what you call "Type-casting!"

Director Erin Byrne says, "No Food Allowed at Rehearsal, guys!" Girls answer, "We know!" while they smile sweetly with their hands in the Cheetos bag. Oh, my bad. It's Hot Fries. That makes it okay.

Looks like Stephen's ready to RAWK...what the heck is Alex doing?

Yeah, I tried my best to capture the "Spyder Secret Handshake," to no avail.

That looks like a handshake, but it really doesn't illustrate how funny Stephen's "Spyder Shake" was, and it was better and more complicated every time.

HEY! No Taking Photos of the Director! (Wait...who had my phone?! If it was Jaelyn, then it's kewl :)

Jaelyn apparently was camera shy. SHEEEA RIGHT!!

Rub the Magic Afro & you will get a prize! Perhaps it will be some Hot Fries! Wait, those aren't allowed in class!

The white smear in front is Kaley jumping into the pic. Check out Alex's facial expression! HAHA!!

Yeah, I pretty much put EVERY picture that had Alex wearing that Afro. And, yes, it will be network-blogged all over Facebook, Twitter, and Err-whurr else, & no doubt re-posted throughout the centuries.

...And Alex will forever be thought of as the Red-Headed Afro kid....

Maybe people will think he really looks like that! Haha, I love Stephen's "Sneaky-Sneaky Eavesdropper" face.

One more attempt at capturing the "Spyder Secret Handshake." Erin=Fail.

I let the girls perform this scene as "Dewey" & "Principal Mullins" since the boys took up pretty much the whole rehearsal on their scenes. The girls did a great job, too! That is what you call "Understudies!"

Haha! Jaelyn does a great "Dewey" rolling his eyes.

Do the Robot! Oh, wait... we did that in "The 80's!" (Theatrikids' Original Musical, and also the decade :)

Aw, I'm a nice director sometimes. I let the class play "Party Quirks" for the last 10 mins.

Jaelyn was a "Walrus" who was I think "confused about seawater," Stephen was a "Sports announcer who was unable to stop announcing everything," Alex was...I think... "Justin Beiber?"

And that is BIZARRE... Nathan is such a good actor--look at him pretending to be a GHOST! His transparency is pretty convincing, don't you agree?

Note To Cast Members: STUDY YOUR LINES DURING SPRING BREAK or lose 'em 4ever!

Theatrikids is the New School of RAWK!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 08 Mar 2011 19:46:00 +0000

Here we are --Monday Cast of "School of Rock"--rehearsing and having lots of fun!

Joe (center) plays a hilarious 'over-the-top' Rocker-guy! Fun to watch!

Jacob plays a nerd AND a rapper. How does he pull that off so well?!

Addison ("Alicia") hugs fellow cast member Kolin ("Dewey"), which added nicely to the scene! :)

HIGH FIVE! (oops, they missed)

HIGH FIVE-TAKE 2! Aw, man they missed again. We'll work on it...

Sydney is so precious & proper as "Summer," the "Class Factotum!"

Director Erin Byrne moves at the Speed of Light! She's blurry in almost every photo. Ever.

Zoe from the Tuesday Cast joined us because she was unable to attend her class this week. What a model student! Makes a teacher proud! (Tear!)

Addison prepares for the hug....

AND THE HUG IS A FLY-BY SUCCESS!

Uh-oh, I think Addison is a tad bored with Director Erin Byrne's scene interruptions. Is she falling out of her chair?

Yes, she has landed on the floor now.

And, now it appears she's falling further down...

Falling down, she can't take much more of this "Director directing" business!

Aw, geez. Her face is on the floor. I think after this, Erin let them all take 5.

I love how sweet Gigi looks in this picture! And I SO WISH I'd gotten a picture of Landon (center) trying on the purple rockstar wig at the beginning of class! NEXT TIME...

Excellent job, Mason of holding your script and 2 guitars! That's SO Rawk-Star!!

Joe ("Spyder") says the line, "It's hard being talented AND beautiful, ya know?"

Mason is singing us a song, I do believe!

AWW! Here's the 2 "Principal Mullins's"! Left-Zoe from Monday Cast, Right-Adrienne from Tues Cast! Love how they're getting along just swell! Makes a Director proud... oh-no! TEAR! (sniffle) 'Nother Tear! I love my job!

What Happens When I Give Students My Phone 2 Take Pics in Class...

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 08 Mar 2011 17:55:00 +0000

I had to laugh. I gave my "older" students (& my Assistant Director, Julia) my phone to take pictures for the blog. They took pictures of each other, while the rest of the class was working hard on their scene. I gently brought it to their attention that I wanted pictures of the class actually "working" at rehearsal, too. They giggled, and took a few of the class, too. Then, they took some more of themselves. Oh, well--at least the cast is bonding!

School of Rock Tues Class Read-Thru

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Wed, 02 Mar 2011 21:55:00 +0000

Well, this class was as much fun as it looks like it was from these pics! We managed to get some work done in the midst of having a ball, and I look forward to more good laughs and a great show at the end of the semester!

Kylin ("Alicia") gives the camera a "hello!"

Nathan ("Dewey Finn") is singing "Green and Yellow, Green and Yellow" as he highlights his script, but he has so many lines that after a few minutes...

He's done. Not with highlighting, just can't take anymore!

The girls are highlighting and discussing the art of the pink marker.

"It's your line!"

"Whoa, chill out, Theo! Take it down a notch" is the line Nathan ("Dewey") says to Alex ("Theo")

"Pleased to meet you, I'm Spyder," says Stephen, who plays "Spyder"-the guy who replaces "Dewey" in the band "Electric Crush"

Uh-oh...Kaley started dancing...

These boys both play two characters in the show: Stephen (left) is "Spyder" & "Zach," and Alex is "Theo" and "Leonard." We'll try their rockstar wigs on next week...

Kaley's still dancin' the day away!

She gets down, she get's back up! Lots of energy in this young lady!

And here she is helping Kylen choose a song for the singing audition scene...

Kaley dancing for the camera--what a surprise!

We're all singing in this picture-Good times!

Oh boy, here's where Nathan decides, against his teacher's wishes, to lean his chair back & prop it on another chair. We'll see how that works out for him.

The boys have some funny lines.

Nathan's chair situation: So far, so good.

The girls decided to trade some lines, which was a good decision based on their characters.

Nathan almost slips out of the chair, but luckily his buddy Stephen is there to hold him up. Nathan's script unfortunately, was a casualty, one page completely ripped in half. Jaelyn ("Summer") is amused.

Ta-dahh! We taped Nathan's broken script back together, since he was unable to leave his chair.

Jaelyn makes a funny face-she's the master of goofy, although she's so pretty you'd never know that unless you come to the show!

Jaelyn wanted me to take a "Paparazzi" pic of her. I played the Paparazzi like a charm, haha!

We're giving the girls a few more lines in one scene, which is why it's so important to bring a pencil with your script to every rehearsal!

Multi-tasking, Kylen uses her pink video camera to film while also reading lines. What a performance!

Alex plays the most hilarious "Nerd"! He's an actor who has worn many faces.

Nathan might fall, wait-oh no---"OOOOHHHHHHH!"

And he's okay! OOOOHHHHHHH!

Jaelyn has some of the hardest lines to say as "Summer," the class factotum-turned band manager.

Nathan starts slipping, we're still reading lines, but Kaley starts giggling here...

Uh-oh, the giggles have really set in now....

Good thing we're done with the read-thru, so we can help our buddy Nathan out from his self-made predicament.

He's slipping, yet stuck in the chair! Kaley is off-camera, still giggling.

...And she's probably STILL giggling to this day!

"School of Rock" Mon Class Script Read-Thru

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Tue, 01 Mar 2011 21:04:00 +0000

This class was SO much fun! As we read-thru the script, the students let loose their creativity, and so many ideas were shared & characters brought to life! This is going to be a great semester, not to mention a WILDLY ENTERTAINING SHOW!!!

Kolin ("Dewey Finn") and Joe ("Spyder") say Hi to my phone taking their pic.

This guy is a hoot, and you should hear him bust a flow! It's extra funny because the character that he created is a nerd, which he does equally well!

Posing for a pic--AWW! I love when the cast unites! Check out Mason hard at work highlighting his 2 characters' lines in different color! Star Student!!

Mason still highlighting.... 2 MORE GOLD STARS!

Ryan and Jacob are good buddies, both in the show and in real life.

Erin says, "Okay, guys! Finish highlighting & let's get started!"

And we dive into the script readings!!!

Addison & Ge'Leya rest their heads on Adrienne, who plays "Principal Mullins." The two girls stayed there throughout the whole class! I hope Adrienne's leg isn't sore--talk about a supportive cast member!

Kolin does a flawless British accent as "Theo," who kicks Dewey out of the band "Electric Crush"

Joe (in the red checker shirt) wins the award for "Most Animated" for these readings-Hilarious!

There goes that animation again!

Joe's character "Spyder" is describing his hair as being his identity.

This is where Landon's laughing fit starts...

Still laughing, Ryan joins in...

Well, it was pretty funny!

Landon pauses laughing for a sec, but, wait... Ryan rolling around is funny too!

This is the end of the laughing fit. Elapsed time of laughter: 4 minutes!

Mason ("Dewey Finn") & Adrienne ("Ms. Mullins") fall into laughter as they read a scene together.

There's Joe with his "Spyder" animation again! You can't stop watching this kid!

Addison sits up to sing & GiGi re-adjusts her jacket as a pillow on Adrienne's leg.

Landon plays the most HILARIOUS "Yoda" character, and I have ideas to make him look like ET when he was dressed in Elliot's Mom's clothes.... Landon said he thought that would be hilarious, so this is my new fave part of the show...

That Hair, those glasses--MUST'VE BEEN THE 80's!! That was a sweet show Theatrikids put on

Taylor Roberts on the movie set!

noreply@blogger.com (Anonymous) — Mon, 10 May 2010 11:04:00 +0000

That's right, folks--I hope you got your autographs already, 'cause Theatrikids own Taylor Roberts is officially a movie star now!

Director Jonathan Hal Reynolds was kind enough to let me run around & take pics during last weekend's filming, and I got to see Ms. Roberts perform her big death scene! How much fun was that?!
Jonathan did some creative directing that I thought was brilliant, and had some of us in the crew SCREAM to add an extra element of surprise to Taylor's shocked realization of being hit by a mean, ugly, pick-up truck which was PERFECT-for-the-part!
I had a blast, and made lots of new friends--Dominic Stangl costarred with Taylor, and off camera the 3 of us choreographed some killer battle scenes (that had nothing to do with the movie, but were none-the-less-AWESOME)...
Also, I must mention that I can't wait to work with costume designer Andie Day this Fall for the Beatles musical that Theatrikids has in the works... Little Sgt. Peppers Outfits?! BIG YES!
Anyway, I wanted to say special thanks to everyone on production staff that made me feel right at home: Jamie, Jonathan, Rebecca, Jodie, Andie, Taylor, Nathan, Mitch, Jill, Dominic, Cyndi, Tyler, Taylor (the Camera operator), AND OF COURSE...Taylor Roberts, my beloved student, who has officially embarked on her destiny to be a movie star AND a rock star (looks like movies 1st! :)
Being on the movie set was a wonderful experience for me--everyone on the wonderful cast and crew that put their hearts into that project! Here are some pics to prove that we all had a BLAST!!

Theatrikids Rock Band Class #2
