I’ll admit it: I’m really just obsessed with that gazelle fur sticking up from the flap of this bag. Sometimes all it requires is a quirky and unexpected detail send a bag from “maybe” to “must.” That, and the contrasted effect of naturalistic fur against burgundy leather is so dreamy.

Fur on handbags is a tricky business, but not only did Chloé get it right (it’s just enough, not overkill), the injection saves the day. An addition like this is an amazing way to spruce up an otherwise bulky, unworthy bag. Because a tan-colored accordion gusset simply is not. I am even obliged to excuse the cumbersomeness of the double-up compartments. It goes to show: a great way with fur will take you far.

The Dior lady is still very much a lady, but when it comes to her vacation time, she’s in demand of some edge. Raf Simons said he “wanted to start with the clichés of what we all think about when we think about cruise” and decided to toy with fabrics he’s not used to. Like lace! When Raf is ready to try something, you can bet he’s going full-throttle. Lace cropped amid metallic-paneled dresses, in abstract pastel tops, even bodysuits and bolero jackets. Resort also proved the ideal time for Christian Dior to invite some shock value into the mix. Peek-a-boo midriffs, deep-V necklines down to there (perfect for layering) and slits up to there (ditto), and unexpected injections of offbeat colors all brought a mischievous grin to my face.

While lots of the pieces are loose and flowy (think free-wheeling trousers), the bags, whether baby pink or searing yellow, maintained their structure through and through. While the demure totes for tossing around are quintessential, many of the clutches are slim and slender, barely visible from the head-on position, which make them the perfect juxtaposition to a puff-sleeved pantsuit. But best of all: Simons has successfully revived both ombré effects(with melded citrus tones reminiscent of a sunset or sweet ice cream-parlor pairings) and colorblocking (thick straps with a contrasted flipside? Yes, please!). When Raf’s way with clichés is this good, I say bring them on in spades.

While I’m not a fan of printed bags, there’s something about Carven’s charming designs that gets me every time. Even in gray, this safari roars to life, making you long for a trip to the savannah. I love the brand’s Paris print, too, and the etoile design on my Louboutin espadrilles (just not all of them worn at once!). The best summer bags are full of whimsy and easy, breezy features like the tote’s magnetized closure. Buckled beige straps add a little structure, pulling the tote in at the sides, yet at its heart, this bag is completely laid-back. It’s strictly for vacation (on safari, maybe?) or relaxing weekends. Clearly this isn’t an entirely sensible purchase – it’s an emotional one. Even if a bag won’t serve many purposes, as long as it makes you feel good, sometimes that’s just enough. Perusing Zink’s new collection of stingray clutches makes me feel like a kid in an ice cream shop – I want to try every flavor! The pebbly skin just has such an alluring, unique texture. Its stiffness makes stingray tough to work with, but designer Ben Freedland used that to his advantage by crafting it into a structured roll clutch that guarantees it’ll maintain its shape. The interior has a zip pouch the length of the clutch and three card slots (forcing you to keep it simple – the perfect summer mantra!), while the outside has a slit pocket for valet tickets and other little papers. From glittering gowns to accompanying minaudières and then far beyond: Elie Saab’s foray into large bags has been utterly seamless. It’s only natural that they boast a private showroom suite in Cannes, ideal for getting film-festival ladies looking perfect. No starlet would turn down the jewel-like, gold-plated clutches, especially now that they’ve been decked in Swarovski-crystal stripes. Just look at Fan Bingbing - her gold box clutch (at Elie Saab for $2,065) sparkled more on the carpet than her Chopard gems!

But despite the preciousness of the metals, I’m experiencing major leather love. And python and crocodile, too! A fashionable crowd came out to play at NYC’s Frieze Art Fair this past weekend, and it got me thinking about how we dress for summer events. From the ultra-posh art lovers frequenting gallery openings to the cool hippie girls rocking out at Coachella, we love to dress the part when we go out. Frieze was dominated by classic bags – Chanel, Hermès, and Céline were all present (natch!). To achieve the Art Snob look, one of Céline’s box bags would do – preferably in shiny, sumptuous croc. And while Coachella may be over, Bonnaroo and a slew of other fests are still on the summer set list. Rebecca Minkoff’s lasercut M.A.C. (at Nordstrom for $295) would be the perfect companion for a musical marathon. From a retail standpoint, Resort is the most important collection for brands. These are the clothes that stay in stores the longest and have influence over the upcoming Spring/Summer collections.

The thick straps on the shoulder bags said it all. This Resort season, Karl unveiled a sporty and relaxed interpretation of Chanel (in sizzling Singapore, no less!). Karl also proved Resort is no prelude to the event; it’s the main attraction. This is a complete wardrobe, packed with many of Chanel’s iconic details: heaps of draped pearls, drop-waist tunics, a plethora of black dresses, flower appliqués, and boyish tailoring. Not to mention the workmanship. Treatments like latex-trimmed lace and beaded embroideries are made to bring a fantastical quality to otherwise simple garb, like the pairing of a mini-dress and sneakers.

With the vibe of slouchy luxury in full effect (think glamorous post-workout attire and nonchalant eveningwear), the bags upped the ante of each look. Most maintained a quintessential Chanel air, from the quilted box bags to the classic chain-straps (whether bunched in the hand or hanging from the shoulder), but a few – like a glittering mini top-handle and a clutch fashioned like a bottle of Chanel perfume – are real showstoppers. At once paying homage and catapulting the house deeper into the new millennium, Karl just brought even more value to the Resort season.

The hardware on this bag reminds of the supremely pricy new Hublot LaFerrari watch, which I don’t even understand because it’s not even nice – it just looks like part of a car engine. But on a Proenza Schouler bag? That’s something entirely different. Here, you get the juxtaposition of an unglamorously functional-looking engine-part closure against sleek leather…and this contrast is completely understandable.

The swiftly curved panels induct an Art Deco feel, with a touch of Speed Racer chic, particularly in the clean black-and-white version (while the black-and-red misses the mark). Topped with a thick strap at the shoulder – which is ever-so slightly reminiscent of a seatbelt, in a really chic way – the Journal simultaneously makes for edge and comfort. Is it any wonder cool girls love Proenza?

Blame (or thank) Charlotte Olympia for the resurgence of kitsch bags. What started out as a witty joke has turned into something serious: the trend is at an all time high. With prices to match. Now another brand is out to give Charlotte’s perfume bottles and parrots and Olympia LeTan’s book bags a run for their money.

Welcomecompanions founder Laurel Conseulo Broughton a slightly more artistic approach to campy accessories. Designing everything in her LA studio, she is inspired by high-brow themes met with direct intention and careful thought. (Each piece is also handcrafted there, which accounts for the high cost.) No random Frosty the Snowman coin purse here! I was most intrigued by the Mr. Knife, Miss Fork collection, which is based on the concept that “the object is not just the object.” From the Airmail Envelope wallet ($220) to the Toast ($740) and Strawberry bags ($720) to the Glove coin purse ($320): I really hate saying this, but I like it. Especially the one that’s perhaps the kookiest of all. I have a hat fetish, and love the creative interpretation of the Hat bag ($390)! Now if I can learn to carry all my stuff on top of my head in said hat bag, life would be perfect.

Edgy and well-priced, the Siren Lady is a clear and easy addition to add some welcome spice to your mix. The definition of a not-so-basic staple, it reminds us it’s all in the details. Reminiscent of the lines in a spider web, the batwing touches at the flap are just enough for some dangerously slick panache. But they’re not so outrageous or wacky that the bag is going to feel outdated in a matter of months. Actually, that extra flap is a secondary compartment, so there’s full-on organization. Combine that with a detachable shoulder strap, and you have a perfect day-to-night companion that offers ultimate versatility. If you had a hard time resisting the temptation to indulge yourself in a bag by Narciso Rodriguez before, it’s now going to be virtually impossible. The champion of timeless, minimal elegance has finally launched his e-commerce site. It’s all things Narciso, all the time! I had the pleasure of meeting one of my favorite designers last month in NYC and manhandled the sublime bag collection in person.

From the nappa-topped lizard shoulder bag ($2,195) to its seductive red variation ($1,895) to black chain-strapped top-handle ($2,395), the man shows us how it’s done. He knows when to inject a pop of color, when to leave well enough alone, and when to toy with a shape or seam. The overall effect: investments that are at once strong and subdued. Snobs who keep it polished day to night will be all over the Boomerang clutch ($795-$1,395), in dual textures (like leather and lizard) or blocked neutrals, but it’s going to be hard to narrow it down to just one bag in the basket. I can safely say my penchant for late-night shopping just got a little more frenzied!

Bracher Emden is an incredible new brand out of London is intriguing from beginning to end, starting with the name. Richard Emden founded the unconventional luxury label in 2002, when he opened his Convent Garden boutique. Being unafraid to embrace creativity is the brand’s motto and true to their mission, these bags are not the norm. Where do they get their inspiration? Superheroes play muse to every bag they make, and a sense of androgyny is applied to actually flatter the female form. These designs surpass our imagination, yet they have a solid foundation in function.

The space-aged Geo clutch ($545) is definitely out there, but the defined edges and indented middle actually make for the perfect shape (and size) for carrying. Plus, the interior has a center-zip compartment, so there is actual organization. Sure, it’s easy to go crazy for a spaceship-inspired clutch, but the tote is a tough wheel to reinvent, so you’ve got to give credit where it’s due. This one ($1010), with ostrich-stamped panels, does a solid job of giving us enough originality to be impressed. With so much focus on details for an effect that wows, they are just so fun and exciting.

Another favorite was Anne Hathaway’s Valentino Noir lucite bag. At first I was taken in by her hair (love the homage to David Bowie), but my eyes quickly fell to the rockstud beauty. Predictably, Christian Louboutin’s weaponized Marquise clutch made a couple of appearances. Miranda Kerr carried the silver (at Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,995), while Jessica Alba revisited her Dark Angel past with black (at NET-A-PORTER for $1,295). Claire Danes rocked Oscar de la Renta’s black lizard Cara vanity case (at Oscar de la Renta $2,450), and of course Roger Vivier clutches were in everyone’s clutches – Kerry Washington‘s Frame Capiton (at Roger Vivier for $1,100) was my fave! One complaint? The lack of nose rings (thank god for Jessica Biel!). You’ll probably never see me write this again – there were too many diamonds last night. Where were all the studs?? You can’t just throw on a sexy dress and call yourself punk. The devil is in the details.

It’d be an understatement to say I haven’t really been impressed with Giuseppe Zanotti’s bags. But then I saw this sexy suede clutch, and I am literally eating my words. A collaboration with Polish model Anja Rubik was all it took to put a pep in his well-heeled step. Really, this is from Anja’s collection – it was based off of her sketches and brought to life by Giuseppe. Not bad for the model’s first outing as a designer! She knows that the smallest details can make the biggest impact, turning an otherwise non-descript bag into something undeniably desirable. The design was inspired by ‘70s glam punk music (you know Bianca Jagger would approve of the gold chain cone closure). And black suede will be able to survive even the craziest rock and roll nights (it actually will look better with some scuff marks). The Clash, Sex Pistols, and Ramones are my top three favorite punk bands. Givenchy, Chanel, and Dior are my top three favorite couture brands. So what happens when these two worlds collide? I get excited! That’s why I’m thrilled about this year’s Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute exhibit. “PUNK: Chaos to Couture” explores the way punk culture’s DIY attitude has influenced made-to-measure haute couture. Street style-inspired high fashion certainly wasn’t invented by the blogging generation. There just wasn’t a name for it back then.

When I was a teenager, I wasn’t allowed to wear torn jeans or spikes. Perhaps that explains my unyielding penchant for both now! In celebration of fashion anarchists, here are some of the best current punk-inspired bags:

We all long for the lavish glow of a white bag but are discouraged by the anxiety staining it. Of course you should be careful (red wine and coffee shall be kept at arms length), but the off-white surprisingly takes small amounts of dirt very well. Tuesday evening’s opening of the exhibition Dress Gatsby in NYC was one for the books. Hollywood starlets and fashion’s elite converged to celebrate Miuccia Prada and Great Gatsby costume designer Catherine Martin’s collaboration, turning Prada’s Soho store into a museum of the film’s finest costumes. Of the galaxy of stars in attendance, Katy Perry shone the brightest with the bag of the night – a black Prada spazzolato clutch accented by a graphic white flower patch. The design played up her bordeaux floral printed dress – also Prada, natch. Another chic guest was my girl Mia Moretti, who arrived in a flirty Miu Miu flower-printed blouse, a purple tweed skirt and matching pumps, and a lime green matelassé clutch (at Miu Miu for $850). Even Carey Mulligan went modern (she’s probably sick of beads and fringe by now!). No worries, though – her black lace Prada coat dress proved that she’d be a style icon in any era. Visit the Dress Gatsby exhibition at Prada’s NYC Epicenter now through May 12th, when it will move to Tokyo and Shanghai.

I went to see End of the Rainbow recently, a musical about the months leading to the end of Judy Garland’s life. It stars Tracy Bennett, who was so spectacular I could not believe what I was watching. This is one of those bags I wish I could redesign: so close to perfection, yet too far away to enter the realm of real desirability. Dries van Noten reaped inspiration from a simple place – a barred window – and the result? A lattice cutout flap I love. Paring down to only a panel was the right call, since allover perforation on the flap would make for a flimsy effect. Keeping it relegated to the bottom is a move I approve of; it feels like a punchy exclamation mark.

I just wish it didn’t come in cracked metallic texture. A detail such as this should be sleek and sharp. In smooth, rigid leather the effect would be exacting. And a whole lot sexier. Rough, almost distressed silver still makes for a good effect, but it’s no perfect ten. If only I could have gotten my eye and hands on this Dries number while it was still in the production room!

This season, there’s one big question: to Lego or not to Lego? Colorful Legos are the biggest craze in bags since, well, leather. Remember the Lego Hermès Birkin, circa 2012? One year later, and the Lego reigns supreme, executed by the house of Chanel and indie artists alike. Chanel’s creations (below), as seen in the hands of Anna Dello Russo for one, are obviously the snobbiest of the bunch.  But they’re also the priciest, coming in at a whopping 12k for the limited-edition black and gold version. My friend dropped hers and a large piece broke off (sad story, I know), so it’s clearly not the sturdiest of bags.

At the other end of the spectrum: Aga bags. They start at a mere $180, but the downside is they look like actual toys built by my eight-year-old. So let’s compromise, shall we? The renditions by Les Petits Joueurs are expensive yet beautifully made. Handcrafted in Florence (one of my favorite cities in the world!), their clutches are witty riffs on piano keys and Mondrian’s modern masterpiece. Sure, they’re still very expensive – just under $1,000 a piece – but for that certain bag connoisseur, this is art worth collecting.

For all the jaw-dropping amazingness currently coming out of the “House de Givenchy,” this is a disappointing tribute. I appreciate Riccardo Tisci’s way with heavy-metal hardware (as well as his unflinching love for it), but other than that industrial touch at the handles, this bag misses the beat. It fails to exude the edgy character and iconic feel I love about the brand.

Something’s missing. Where is that brilliantly twisted shape that comes with the bowler-inspired Antigona (loving the calf-hair addition)? Or the details on par with the star-embellished minaudiere, adornments worthy of going on display in a museum? Instead, we have not-so-surprising colorblocking, a flared gusset (the likes of which are a dime a dozen), and a logo that messes with our concept of Givenchy, rather than enhances it. Simply uninspired, I’m just going to say it: that HDG logo is just bad. It totally degrades the brand for me.

This Jil Sander clutch is basically perfection. The minimalist design is ladylike yet modern and has everything you could want, including a deceptively large leather-lined interior (luxury inside and out!) that can hold all of your essentials and then some. The bag has a metal frame, so to prevent lost circulation in your wrist Sander crafted a thick strap that looks like a chic leather cuff. I do have one large complaint, though, and I think you can guess what it is. That oversized luggage tag! On her larger totes the signature accent looks more fitting, but on this clutch it just overwhelms. I’m usually nit picky about even the tiniest details – this detail is far from tiny. I’ve been a fan of Neil Barrett since the late ‘90s. Neil was instrumental in launching Prada menswear (he also designed at Gucci for years). Brilliant when it comes to crafting leather jackets and suits alike, I was finally was able to get my husband (then boyfriend) into suits I approved of, thanks to him. Neil’s take on womenswear is equally streamlined, clean, and detail-oriented.

So it’s very exciting to see his bags! Houndstooth: a perennial Fall favorite that’s gained extra momentum in recent years, thanks to forerunners like Salvatore Ferragamo  and Proenza Schouler. But no one has done a quintessential version of the pattern quite like Roger Vivier. Not only is this one of the best printed bags I saw during Paris Fashion Week, it is definitely one of the best renditions of the houndstooth print, ever. It’s crisp, strong, perfectly scaled, and thoroughly unexpected in deliciously soft calf hair. The silhouettes – both the Mini Bouclé Pochette, with a chain strap ($1,100), and the Metro Square shoulder bag, with a leather strap ($2,395) – are classic and undeniably Vivier, without feeling overtly ladylike. Roger Vivier bags have long reigned the red carpet, but come Fall ’13, I predict a domination on the streets, to boot.

There are coincidences, and then there are bags that are simply too alike not to point out. Was Loeffler Randall‘s Rider bag inspired by Louis Vuitton‘s Monceau? A resounding yes! There are plenty of bags out there in the mini-briefcase style, but Loeffler Randall didn’t even try to make theirs vaguely different. This is a dead ringer, straight down to the ultra-symmetrical push-lock hardware.

If they were aiming for a case of mistaken identity, then mission accomplished. I have to say, Loeffler Randall did a really good job of knocking off Louis Vuitton. The leathers are different, but it’s the exact same bag. And sometimes you don’t want to splurge big on a trendy little bag, even if it’s in quintessential LV finishes like glossy patent ($1,720) and textural Epi leather ($1,550). In solid cobalt or the happy clash of pink and red, the steal comes in at just $495. Plus, it has hidden bicycle-fastening straps if you feel like getting active. Experiencing jarred senses is the opposite of my earlier complaint that all bags have started looking the same, but obviously, I’d rather be bored than offended. I love the Chyc tote, but the question here is not how much I love it, but how much is that love worth? Because 30 grand means a whole lot of love. I can say with certainty that this is a truly iconic bag, destined to live on for quite some time, so making the investment in such a piece is justifiable. I just can’t say with certainty that I would do it!

You could argue that you can get a Chanel alligator bag for just a few pennies more, but Chanel’s classic flap in alligator is pretty old-school. Not to mention, old-lady. (But I’ll gladly be a chic old lady any day, if it ever comes to that.) Saint Laurent imbues a much younger, hipper look into hyper-polished exotic skin. This feels just about as edgy as a doctor’s bag can be, without going wayward and trendy (read: too much hardware or executed in clear PVC). Yes, a single-piece of mature alligator belly is something you will always covet – and rightly so. On this timeless Chyc bag, it is pretty spectacular.

It’s no mystery why I love The Row: crisp, edited creations that are grown-up without a hint of stuffiness, in the most glorious of skins and leathers. Now it looks like the wise-beyond-their-years Olsen sisters have grown up even more, no pains necessary. At least, their eye for design has: their Fall 2013 collection brings their label to covetable new heights.

I love the subtle touches of colorblocking Mary-Kate and Ashley have incorporated into their timeless styles. Ivory and black feels thoroughly reinvented, especially with a great injection of cherry red. Along with slyly angular cutouts and dashes of slouch, it’s restrained yet potent details like these that take an otherwise ladylike number to new heights. And who needs hardware for closure when flaps and tabs are done so brilliantly? The collection is heavy on classics, but it’s not without a few major surprises. Their way with curly Mongolian lamb puts “chic” into fall’s fur bags (and you know that’s no easy feat), and be prepared to see their sumptuous exotic hobos, topped with the slinkiest of chains, on the arms of high-profile editors and bloggers alike come Fashion Week in September.

Once frequently wacky and off-the-wall, Maison Martin Margiela bags are getting more practical and usable by the minute. Their latest pair of suede incarnations present you with palatable, pared-down design accompanied by fresh details you need to discover on your own – it’s much more fun that way.

The super-streamlined shoulder bag (on Ssense for $1,490) has a slim magnetized closure, but it’s the concealed zip closure on the fold-over flap that’s the happy surprised. And don’t be afraid to load it up (in moderation); accordion-style panels allow for expansion. Even more streamlined, the clutch version (at Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,195): this is a no-nonsense clutch for the busy snob who is done with fluff and fuss. Similar though not identical, choose between the two depending on your needs. Either way, dove-gray suede and mirrored silver metal adds up to a combination that’s gives off a monochrome vibe, sans dullness.

Cigar boxes came back into fashion years ago, and since then, literary Snobs have been coveting Olympia Le-Tan’s book clutches like they were rare editions themselves. The classics have been on heavy rotation in street style photos, but the prices are just ridiculous. Playing on our sentimentality to get us to pay top dollar is something I doubt Charlotte Brontë would approve of, so let’s break things down for a minute. The felt appliqués are easy enough to create on your own, in fact I would say a grade school arts and crafts class could make them (and as a certified 2nd grade book report and puppet making assistant, I would know). The embroidery is not incredibly detailed either, and while the clutch is “Hand Made in France,” it’s basically just canvas, a metal frame, and a poplin interior. At the MoCA Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday, China Chow looked like a work of art herself. The party was in celebration of the Urs Fischer exhibition, but China deserves applause of her own for taking cocktail dressing to a new level in Viktor & Rolf. The sculptural, high-volume dress – or as China calls it, “the black M&M dress” – is from the design duo’s FW 2013 season.

China is not your average fashion plate. A known art connoisseur, she is a purist with a savvy eye that draws her to elevated pieces that push boundaries. If she can’t find something amazing, she would rather stay home. And this outfit is sheer perfection. She chose a simple Hugo Boss clutch in pony hair, topped with a clean, gold edge and interesting leather clasp, which adds texture to a monochrome-black ensemble. Opaque tights would have been took dark and a bare leg not formal enough for the dress; fishnet stockings add just the right level of insouciance. China finished it all off with Saint Laurent pumps – we are both diehard devotees of platform shoes, no matter the current trends! Here’s the thing about Tiffany’s bags – they offer the best of both worlds. Hardware as impressive as its world-class jewels and immaculate leather to match. Last fall, I lunched with Richard Lambertson and John Truex (the fabulous duo behind the house’s most successful bag launch yet), and they gave me a personal preview of the Spring 2013 line. The adorable Quinn mini immediately caught my eye- unmistakably Tiffany from top to bottom, there’s even a little Tiffany lock inside! There are multiple shades to choose from but I prefer neutrals like the timelessly chic camel and white. For those who crave color– the newest canary you’ll want from the jeweler isn’t a rock, but the yellow version of the bag! I love its matching 24k gold-plated hardware. I have been a huge fan of globetrotting wonder woman Dareen Hakim ever since she came out with the Le Icon clutch. Years later, it remains a bag I use all the time. Not just unique and striking, it (literally) makes a statement: the bold metal plaque is embossed with an uplifting message in Arabic.

Laser cut isn’t the same as croc, but considering this Givenchy (at Barneys New York for $2,200) is only croc-stamped leather, you’ll see why these two clutches are actually pretty comparable. The design on the Diane von Furstenberg (at Saks Fifth Avenue for $395) gives us black Jackson Pollock-esque splatterings with unique texture that’s not unlike that of the croc-stamping and suede seams on its sleek, high-priced competitor. DVF’s fun graphics would best be viewed in the daylight, but who are we kidding? These tiny things can’t handle being out all day. Since they’d ultimately serve the same purpose (drinks, dinner, dancing), I’m going with the savings here. The black and white web decorating the DVF will win admirers whether the sun is high in the sky or on the other side of the world. Which of the intricate minaudières are you eyeing, though?
