The Cruise family! Really? Do they have to be THAT beautiful? Geesh!

Recently I had the awesome opportunity to gift Tom, Katie and Suri a Studio Jewel original design through the exclusive Artisan Group. I was so honored to be chosen, and I immediately knew exactly what I was going to send to each of them!

Favorite Thing - Colorful Hair

Trends. We've discussed them. We've talked about BEING the trend, not following them.

THREE years ago my girls wanted to color their hair. Streak it they said. Just a few pieces mom. You know, for fun. Well I'm all about fun. And hair? It's just hair. So I Christmas Eve 2009 (these were the days I still had free time) I took them to my salon for colorful highlights.

first the bleaching - oh my word Isabel looks like a baby here...my little girl is growing up!

then the color....then you sit....then you bake...it's a process!

They were elated...and the color looked fantastic. Christmas color. So fun!

Little did I know we'd all be hooked.

Last summer I joined the band wagon with purple highlights...and feathers...and even pink extensions at one time - you can read about that over here. The color bug was caught.

And now, what is one of this summers HOTTEST TRENDS? Bright colored hair highlights. Little did we know we were so cutting edge!

Does this make us trend setters? Or just suckers for colors?

Last February Anneke and I had our purple put in a bit heavier....we loved it. And really it was JUST beginning to fade.

Do not mock me. She made me do this.

***A little FYI, not all color treatments are the same. The Edge, my amazing salon, uses an ionic color that truly adheres to the hair. The color is not only vibrant, it lasts a long time. Anneke had pink put in at another salon last year...it faded within a couple of weeks. So make sure you ask questions and know exactly what you are paying for.***

Yesterday, Anneke and I needed a summer refresher. So now our purple is bright and fantastic! No picture yet...sorry!

Next time, I'm trying to convince Gene-the-Amazing to dip dye my ends. Wouldn't that be awesome?

Fashion Tip Tuesday - Your Summer 2012 Basic Pieces

You've ignored it long enough. Pushed it aside. Thought it would go away. Tapped your heels together three times.

Guess what?

It didn't.

Summer is here, and your wardrobe is not. But never fear!

Panic-be-gone is as easy as adding a few must have pieces - then mixing and matching from what is already in your closet!

Ready?

Ok, so you didn't take my advice and buy those red skinny jeans in the spring. Can I entice you with a pair of Atlantic blue ones? The beauty about colorful jeans is they add unexpected twist to your otherwise boring wardrobe - yes, I am paying attention.

Worried about what to wear them with? DON'T! White t-shirt? Black tank top? You don't need to go all funky color blocking. Keep it simple. Just make sure the jeans are the right fit for you. I love these from Joe's Jeans and they come in...wait for it...55 colors! Yes, they are pricey. But they fit extremely well!

Do you want to pair those jeans with a cute Tunic Top? Of course you do! Another must have for summer, and they look great over shorts too! I love this soft colored version from Calypso!

Ah yes, shorts. They are truly the bane of my existence. I detest short shorts for many reasons. Long shorts? Well you might as well wear capri's. But.these.I.love - the Trailhead shorts in white from Madewell. I've had Madewell pants in the past, they fit beautifully...so I can imagine these will too. A small price to pay for something you will virtually live in all summer long.

Rather wear a skirt? Then try the low hi skirt. Lower hem in the back...shorter in the front. It's a cute fun look that is ALL over the place and I'm kinda diggin it! I found this one from Alloy - basic black and inexpensive! Double win!

Don't forget your feet! I know this may not be your favorite store, but if you want trendy and inexpensive Payless is my go to. I just bought these studded sandals and the cute flowered version (my daughter got some too!). Perfect for summer and I can toss them when the season is over, no love - or money - lost.

Pull it together with a cute summer bag. Ombre is hot and so is this fantastic bag from Anthropologie!

There you go. A few summer staples that you can mix and match and feel like you are ready for summer!

Studio peeks or happenings or life or whatever you want to call it

The studio is buzzing. Life with four kids is buzzing. I typically wake up and have to look at my phone to determine what day it is. Tell me I'm not alone here. Don't leave me hanging....

So what does that mean for you? An instagram glimpse inside the happenings of my crazy life. *laughter is expected*

So what exactly are you looking at....you ask?

Clockwise...ish....

- No, she is not experiencing a more simple Bibical life. Yes, we can afford to buy her shoes. She's a news reporter from Jerusalem. Duh!
- And no, she doesn't think she's a princess...except all girls are, you knew that right? She's Melinda, the good witch. Original Oz, read the story.
- Girl. Horse. That one was easy.
- My iris are blooming and gorgeous. But it's only May. In Michigan. It's not right.
- Again, May in Michigan...and 90 degrees. Yehaw. Not complaining.
- Short version. I was bored in the podiatrist office waiting for my sons foot to numb, so I doodled on the doctors white board. It's the little things.
- Carving a wax for a super secret project.
- Wax done, finishing the silver...yes, that is .925 sterling silver all over me. Most expensive body glitter EVAH!
- Pinterest for dummies. I'm on page 29. Nuff said. (wait, I'm not the dummy!)
- I had a date...sorta...with my boy. Needless to say, we are on a hill, I'm wearing heels and he took he shoes off. He is WAY taller than me.
- I had another date...a real one...to the symphony, with my husband. It.was.awesome.

And to top it all off I have a couple new designs. Wanna see?

For the graduate...I LOVE this.

The Chinese symbol for strength on a leather wrap bracelet. I have this tattoo on my ankle. I designed this so you don't need to make the same commitment.

My wide hand carved band in 14 karat gold. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

Favorite Thing - Fashion Style Boards by Polyvore

Looking for fashion and style inspiration? Do you get that "deer in the headlights" stare when you peer into your closet in the morning? Do you wish you had a personal stylist to tell you what to wear and lay your outfits out like "Garanimals"?

Then you are absolutely in the right spot today.

Polyvore.

I love it. It inspires me.

What is Polyvore?

Polyvore is the web's largest fashion community site, where users are empowered to discover their style and set trends around the world. With over 15 million monthly unique visitors, Polyvore's global community has created over 44 million sets that are shared across the web.

Basically, Polyvore is a place you can make style boards. Sort of "inspiration boards". If you don't want to "make" them, you can follow other people and have your ideas sparked by them.

If you have spent ANY time at all on Pinterest you have seen said boards. Some are off the charts wild, and some are perfectly suited to me. Some are designs for your home, others the perfect outfit for when you go clubbing. (I only say that, because I find it funny....me? Clubbing? In those clothes?)

Anyway.....

I made this simple style board this morning in about 5 minutes. Nothing flashy. Just an outfit you might typically find me wearing to the grocery store, or a ball game.

Think of it as a springboard for yourself. You might see something want to try, or something similar to an item hanging in your closet and now you are inspired to try a new top, or accessory....

...like this....

Now granted...some people have WAY too much time on their hands and they make these elaborate boards with quotes and pieces of art and model shots. Don't get me wrong, they are super fun to look at...but dang...it's like a graphic design project!!

Once you start creating boards or finding ones you love the ability to share through social media is extensive. If you can think of a social media option...they have a button for it. True story.

At the very least it's a new distraction from Pinterest. You're welcome.

Fashion Tip Tuesday - stylist tools for your road trip

Summer is coming. In case you didn't know. What that means for many is ROAD TRIPS. What that ALSO means is limited car space, small suitcases, and a fashion wardrobe that might be a little less than desirable.

I have two trips in June. TWO! ~ and this does not include all the travel baseball weekend trips either! Ugh. I digress. My trips. One by plane. One by car.

In the next couple weeks I will help guide you as you pack for your summer trips. How to pack well and small and keep yourself fashionable along the way.

But first things first. Let's channel your inner Macgyver. (if you are under a certain age and don't get that...Google it) You need a Fashion Stylist Toolbox.

Say what?

A bag of tricks, so to speak. An emergency kit. Must have supplies to have you ready for any and all fashion disasters.

And between me and THREE fashionista-in-training teenage and tweenage daughters clothing malfunctions are bound to happen. But we will be ready!

FIRST, grab yourself a cute bag. You know the ones you get as freebies with your makeup purchase? The ones stashed under your bathroom sink. Oh, you threw those out? How about these adorable bags from Simply Sarah? I have this one in my purse right now.

What you need in your bag.

Stain Remover. Let's face it stains happen. Grab one of those pens, like the Tide to Go pen and your golden. Now you're ready for the great salsa mishap, or worse!
Safety Pins. Seriously, you just never know. Fix a necklace. Keep your clothes where they should be etc. I found these Dritz(R) Safety Pins on Amazon. $4.79 for 200. Buy them.
Sewing kit. Kinda goes with the safety pins, but a step up. Even if you are not Betty Seamstress, I bet you can tie a knot in a thread and stitch in and out, in and out. Button pops off, a seam splits a little, a tear in a most embarrassing spot. You get the idea. Hotels used to give these kits away, not so much anymore. But again, since you're already on Amazon's site, here's a cute little Singer Sewing Kit in Reusable Pouch. This one even has a scissors, which is item #4 on my list!
Scissors. (told ya) Loose threads. Tags that need to be cut. Do NOT rip off your tags people. I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you where to buy scissors, but a pair does come in aforementioned little sewing kit. FYI.
Static Stuff. I have had way too many incidents of things clinging when they just should NOT. And if you have packed one of those lightweight dresses we will talk about next week, and it's been shoved in a suitcase...it has static. Trust me. Buy a tiny can of Static Guard and stick in da bag.
Wrinkle Spray. I am not a big fan of the iron. But I'm also not a big fan of wrinkles either. Nothing screams TRAVELER more. And since your in "can buying mode", I recommend you grab some of this wonder spray. Shoot, buy 10 - it works so well you may never iron again! Back to Amazon, I found this Travel Size Wrinkle Wiz but Downy makes one too.
Double stick tape. This is a must have. Create a hem. Keep spaghetti straps in place. Keep clothes from ever having a *ahem* mishap. "Sew" something shut quickly. This is truly a "stars" best friend. Or so I read.
Clear nail polish. Honey, it's not just for "panty hose" anymore. Paint it on a button that looks like it's going to fall off (in case you forgot to buy item #3) Shoe lace unraveling? Frayed anything? Here's my favorite...paint it over your sunglasses screws, you know the ones that get loose and fall out on those cheap sunglasses you love?
Lint roller. You may not have taken the dogs with you, but you never quite leave them behind, do you? And, you never know who...or what...you will encounter along the way.

Other than those essentials, if you are traveling by land and you make-squeeze-have room in the vehicle, I'd throw in a handheld steamer...just in case.

ask Lisa - how to clean your jewelry and keep it clean

How do I keep my jewelry clean and how do I clean my jewelry when it gets "icky"? Two questions I get asked almost daily!

So let's talk jewelry, shall we? It just makes me giddy! The sparkle, the glitter, the warmth, the feel….I love everything about it! But what good is your jewelry if you can’t find it….or worse yet, when you do find it….it is in terrible condition! As much a piece of jewelry can MAKE your outfit…a piece of dirty jewelry can BREAK it!

To keep your jewelry in its most beautiful form, I have a few basic tips for you.

Tips to keep it CLEAN and ACCESSIBLE!

Wear it! Sounds simple right? Jewelry is meant to be worn…it LIKES to be worn…it tarnishes LESS when it’s worn…true story!! If there are pieces of value in your jewelry box that you don’t wear…I suggest you find a jeweler you trust **ahem** and have them re-create something from that piece so that it gets OUT of your box…and onto your body!
Put your “everyday” pieces someplace very accessible. If you have a ring or two, or even a favorite necklace or bracelet you wear everyday, I recommend taking it off and storing in the SAME place each night. This will end the, “oh no I can’t find it" moment!
Jewelry is precious. It is special. It needs to be cared for. Use common sense and don’t scratch or bang your jewelry. ESPECIALLY handcrafted jewelry!
Keep your jewelry away from chemicals of ALL kinds, swimming pools, hot tubs, PERFUME, and even extreme temperatures. The chlorine and bromine in pools and hot tubs is particularly damaging to stones and metal, and will even damage solid gold.

BASIC CARE and CLEANING:

Clean it regularly with mild sudsy water, rinse well, and pat dry with a soft cloth.
Polish metals gently with a jewelry polishing cloth. Like the Sunshine Cloth I offer in my shop. I use them as a final cleaning step on every piece of jewelry I sell.
If your jewelry has tarnished or discolored there are Commercial silver/gold cleaners. Be sure that any stones in the jewelry can withstand the chemicals in the cleaner. Read the label, and if in doubt, do not use a chemical cleaner.
Ammonia and water. My favorite deep cleaning option. Mix a light solution of ammonia and water, then use a SOFT toothbrush or cloth to rub over your piece. Rinse thoroughly with water. Ammonia should not be used on the same types of gemstones that should not be used with commercial cleaners - again, make sure you check!

STORAGE

1. Store your jewelry in a zippered plastic bag
2. Place it in a jewelry box. I'm spoiled...my man child MADE me this awesome jewelry box for Christmas this year. How cool is that? *forgive the bad cell phone pic!*

3. Each piece of Studio Jewel jewelry is shipped in a velvet pouch packed with an anti-tarnish strip, and then it is placed in our recycled cardboard boxes. We make it easy for you to store your jewelry in the best possible way. You're welcome!

Fashion Tip Tuesday - Toes Matter - Pedicures at Home

Summer fashion highly involves sandals. Wedges, flip flops, strappy heels, gladiators. What do they ALL have in common?

Toes that show!

And truly? Nothing ruins the look of fantastic sandals than a pair of ratty feet and unpainted toe nails. Ick.

Obviously we can't all run out for a pedicure every couple weeks, although I'm still trying to figure out how to make one a business expense. But pedicures at home can be done easily.

Even better? Why not plan a girls night in? Can you say….Diva time?!

Either way, here are some easy tips to get those "I've been hiding in boots all winter feet" ready to shine in the best sandals summer has to offer!

Remove your nail polish.
Soak for 15-30 minutes - add bath salts, essential oils or Epsom salts to the warm water.
EXFOLIATE! Using the pumice stone they can begin to scrub away the rough layers of skin to get their feel nice and smooth.
Rinse in the basin, dry off your piggies...slightly...not completely.
Moisturize. A bit of dampness will help seal in the moisturizer. And take your time. Rub it in and enjoy the pretty scent! And if you can find a lotion with Vitamin E, or Shea butter or jojoba oil..even better.
Toe Time! Trim or file their nails as you wish.
Before you polish take one more swipe with the nail polish remover to make sure all that lotion is off of your nail. Trust me on this one!
Polish...have fun with this one. Colors for summer include..are you ready?

Favorite Thing - Head Wraps

A little color goes a long way. It brightens a mood. It changes an attitude. It completes an outfit. Shoot, for me it can change a Monday into a Friday!

Y'all know how much I love scarves for my hair, but this has made my scarf obsession just a little bit easier.

No knots. No wrapping. Just slip on and...viola! You're done.

Grace and Lace - such a cute name - create these fantastic head wraps in the best.colors.ever! I had the hardest time deciding...so I bought THREE!

So here's the deal. The nitty gritty. I kind of have a small weird shaped head...no comments please! And unless I do tie a scarf on my head myself, they usually don't fit, or they feel strange. And honestly, who can go through a day with some strange feeling on their head? Worst case scenario? Headbands give me a headache.

Not these.

They attach with covered elastic in the back...and it's the perfect amount of stretch. (I'm not even being paid or gifted to tell you this! Maybe I should be!)

So that's the functional part. The fun part? You can wear them many different ways!

*warning it's about to get awkward - me taking cell phone pictures of me*

This is your basic "under the hair" look. Super easy.

Then you can try the "over-under". Yes, I made that up. Forgive my angry look, do you have any idea how hard it is to take a photo of yourself? Ick!

And when I say they are comfortable, I am not kidding. I totally wore this one playing volleyball last night. Let's just say, it was kind of like when you go skiing and you LOOK much better than you can actually ski. {ahem} Needless to say, it stayed in...and kept sweaty-wild-crazy hair from flying in my face.

And then there are ALWAYS those moments when you need to audition for Pirates of the Caribbean, right? Secret? I have a tiny obsession with "Jack Sparrow". This is me wearing my head wrap to work in the studio. And let me tell you....I didn't worry once about setting my hair on fire. BONUS! And...you get to look at Jack. Double Bonus.

Fashion Tip Tuesday - long tank tops

Muffin tops. Tramp stamps. Basically skin that shouldn't be seen. We've all glimpsed the peep show and cringed.

Some may intend it. Many do not. It's a hazard of the ever lowering waist styles, and the ever shortening tops. Midriffs for summer? Really? Pahleese no.

How DO you combat that space between the bottom of your shirt and the top of your pants? How DO you make sure you don't show off more than you intended without making the transition to high waisted pants? {shudder} I will NEVER go back there!

I have a solution, but you knew that I did right? Otherwise this wouldn't be much of a fashion tip would it?

Needless to say, I have this issue a lot. I have a very long waisted body. Translated? Nothing is ever long enough. Nothing.

My secret weapon?

Tank tops. Yes, tank tops.

Not only do they afford me the extra length, they give me an option for an unexpected pop of color. Not to mention extra warmth in the winter, and a layer to absorb any "perspiration" aka SWEAT in the summer!

See how smart I am?

It used to be difficult to find long tank tops, but they are popping up everywhere now. Maybe the retailers got sick of seeing that "space between" too. My absolute favs come from Down East Basics, they even have some with lace trim...LOVE! And they have a higher neckline, not that I have to worry about "falling out" but you get the idea!

My latest find came from H&M - and these baby's are SUPER long...even for me! And as expected, Target has nice selection of a wider strap version in their junior department. And really, who doesn't love Target?

Think of your tank tops as an accessory.

Wearing jeans and a grey shirt? Add a bright blue or pink tank top.

pretty much my "uniform" I do a lot of bending and leaning in the studio...no one needs a show!

Patterned skirt and fitted sweater? Slip on a complimentary color to pull it together.

Dress pants and blouse? Tuck that tank top in, it will help keep your blouse tucked and give you a layer to show off that charm necklace you're wearing.

I literally have drawer full of a plethora of color. It is a rare occasion you DON'T see me in a tank top. I even have my girls hooked. And as far as teen fashion goes, this is a beautiful thing. Trust me. (remember my teen fashion a mom can love posts?)

So stop tugging at the back of your shirt. Stop worrying about picking up that french fry you dropped (yes, I saw you). Just throw on a tank top, pull it down over the top of your jeans and fear.no.more.

You're safe. And fashionable. My work here is done.

Just a peek - Instagram Style

Crazy town. That's where I live.

Softball. Baseball. Plays.

Throw in Mother's Day.

What do you get? One of those moments my head spins around three times and I need to scream.

Ok, maybe that's a little bit drastic. But it did paint a picture, did it not?

So for today, I thought I'd give you glimpse into my life from the last couple weeks. Instagram style!

So what are you looking at?

Leaving Utah, coming home, daily accessories, my fur babes, softball, anniversary flowers, yum!, my goofy daughter, double bananas (yes I'm serious) a note from my smallest person, my smallest persons home run, my agent 99 catching the "bad girl", and working late at night with a treat from my man.

WHEW!

Did you catch all that? And to think...this is just a glimpse?

Favorite Thing - Woodwick Scented Candles

Remember that summer by the lake? Remember your dorm room? Remember the Christmas when everyone got together the last time? Remember our first apartment?

To me scents are a simple luxury. Not only do they provide immense olfactory pleasure. They bring me back to certain times and events. Why is that? Why do they stir up so many emotions and memories?

Whatever the reason, I am a sucker for candles. But I am also incredibly picky about my fragrances. They need to scent a room, not overpower it. And they have to incite a positive "feel good" memory!

My favorite candles are Woodwick Candles. Not only do they make my entire house seem absorbed in the beauty of autumn (yes fall and Christmas scents are my favs) but the natural wooden wick crackles while it burns! And I like to choose the large jars, they seem to burn forever, like 180 hours forever!

Which "flavor" would you choose? Peoples different opinions and favorites always intrigue me!

Fashion Tuesday - That's what HE said

Eighteen years. That's 216 months, 6,570 days, and approximately 568,036,800 seconds.

Yesterday I celebrated 18 years of marriage.

THAT is a long time to live with another person.

My man has watched my fashion sense evolve, including three years worth of maternity clothes {{shudder}}.

For today's post I thought I would ask him what he likes to see me wear. Of course he began with see through t-shirts and certain undergarments....such a guy....but I reminded him, very specifically (sometimes you need to spell things out to those of the opposite sex) what I was asking for. Clothes for OUTSIDE of the home. Geesh!

Interestingly enough, his number one choice for me are dresses. Specifically? He loves my long boho maxi dresses. His opinion? They are trendy and feminine and leave enough to the imagination to make them sexy. I'm loving this one by Gypsy 05 and Bluefly.com. I tried to locate a photo of me in his favorite dress of mine...and I did find this one. Taken in Asheville last year at the TypeAParent conference.

I asked him about shoes. He gave a decided NO to platforms and leopard prints and flip flops. But this man does love a nice heel, even though that makes me taller than him!

In desperation a few weeks ago...I called on him to shop for me. He was out running errands, I was packing with a flight to catch in a couple hours and NO strappy black heels to be found! I begged him to swing in the nearest store and see what he could find. These were his choice...and I love them! Proving great style can come from some of the least likely places. Go team Meijer!

Jeans or no jeans?
I am TOTALLY a jeans kinda girl so I was a little concerned to hear his opinion on this topic. He likes jeans, nice fitting jeans. Of course that will be different for everyone. My advice? Know your body type. He likes to see my denim paired with something flirty and feminine. Something girly. Something like this cute limeade tank from Francesca's Collection.

Bottom line? Not everything we THINK the opposite sex is loving is necessarily a true fact. They are a bit more refined then we give them credit for. {smile}

Thank you darlin' for your input today. And thank you for 18 years. It's been a wild and crazy ride...I can hardly imagine what the next 18 will look like? Probably less skinny jeans and more stretch wear! Now, will you please take me out on a date, I know exactly what to wear!

Ask Lisa - what is your creative process?

WARNING! Peeking into how I create could be somewhat frightening! Inside of my head is a slightly scary place. But, then again, you knew that already...proceed!

My new friend Karen, the Graphics Fairy, and I were chatting and she asked me HOW I design? What's my process? How does a design go from whirling around in my head to becoming a living and breathing piece of wearable art.

I guess I never thought anyone would find that interesting. I assumed all you cared about was the end product. She assured me that is not the case, and encouraged me to share.

The process goes something like this.

1. Surround yourself with pretty things. This is totally important, especially since winters in Michigan are so grey and depressing. I need a studio that is vibrant and fun and exciting. I need words, color, pattern, and the occasional dose of SILLY! (yes, I do occasionally wear the tiara...don't believe me...stop by sometime!)

2. Put your favorite inspiration from others someplace you can see it. This is my bulletin board, it has notes and drawings and photos. It makes me smile!

I'm also a fan of inspirational words and quotes. I have them ALL over my house and studio!

3. I sketch, paint, draw out EVERYthing! It helps me put the craziness in my head in a somewhat sorted out fashion. I sketch, revise, sketch again, throw away. And then when I think it's something I really want to use I add it to my design notebook or tape it to a cabinet in my studio. I'm classy like that!

4. Vision boards. I like to SEE the colors and patterns that I'm jonesing for. Besides it lets me play with colored paper and glue. Then I add some of my sketches to the boards.

So this is my beginning process. Then we get to the fun part...becoming the "maker".

What inspires you to do what you do? Is it your space? A smell? How do you find YOUR groove? Inquiring minds want to know!

Fashion Tip Tuesday - are you on trend?

Noun:

A general direction in which something is developing or changing.

Verb:

(esp. of geographical features) Bend or turn away in a specified direction.

Are you on trend?

Do you even know what that means?

Do you have to be? Should you?

What if you're not?

I have an idea. Let's throw the whole trend, trending, trendy idea out the window, shall we?

What if you actually embraced what YOU like? That's what makes you happy isn't it? That's when you feel your very best, correct? That my friend is what becoming a trend is all about. See how easy this is?

Now I'm not letting you off the hook for sweats and sneakers. That, in fact, is NOT a trend. But I am encouraging you to walk your own style path.

I do not follow trends. I pay attention to trends. But I don't follow them.

For instance. Driving home from the vet a couple weeks ago, I spied this little boutique. I shouted to my driver to turn in. Mind you, my driver was my 16 year old inexperienced driver. A. You should never shout at a new driver. B. You should expect him to not want to come inside said boutique. C. You should hurry.

I did a quick survey of the store and immediately my eyes fell upon this sweater. Why? Because it reminded me of blankets my grandma and auntie and mother had crocheted...or knitted...I really don't know the difference. I play with fire...remember? Needless to say, it was a somewhat inspired-sentimental moment.

I made a fast decision and purchased this darlin' little multi colored crocheted vest thing. Back in the car...with "patiently" waiting 16 year old son...I had a bit of buyers remorse. Is it ugly? It does not fit into any trends I've read about. Will I actually wear it?

I decided to take it to Utah last weekend to the SNAP creative conference. With limited wardrobe options, I knew I would HAVE to {gulp} wear it. Now I'm nervous. What if people actually try to sniff me to see if I smell like moth balls, since I stole this from granny's cedar chest and all.

But alas, that did NOT happen.

Instead, I was asked if I MADE this glorious design...again, remember I don't even know if it's knit or crocheted. And then, shock of shock, people were asking to take pictures of IT (not me!) IT! And they were asking to reading my label - somewhat awkward but I did acquiesce.

It was a hit! I created a trend. I was the trend.

Why? Because I chose what spoke to ME!

I paired it with a simple tank...some skinny jeans...and open toe wedges (as seen in deluxe packing photo). Perfection...for me. And you know what?

I felt amazing too!

Don't fear being on trend. Find a piece you love. Embrace it. Own it. BE the trend!

Top Ten or Twenty Things you never knew about me or maybe never wanted to know!

Utah. Creatives. New people. Travel.

This is my today.

I'm leaving for a conference in Utah...a place I've never been. To be with a bunch of creatives...people who will intimidate me. I don't know hardly any of them...now I'm scared. And I have to leave home...again...and miss my daughters 10th birthday...read that as major mommy guilt.

{{sigh}}

So instead of a Favorite Things post, I thought it was a good time to let you know the real me, just a wee bit better. That way if any of my "new" friends decide to check me out, we will be straight forward right up front. No secrets. Nothing held back!

this is your warning to proceed at your own risk.

I listed the first Top Ten about a year and a half ago, so I'll humor you with a recap and then gift you 10 more pieces of useless information. You may laugh, you may roll your eyes, but it just might give you insight into who I really am. Sort of.

I love coffee with my whole heart. However, I gave up caffeine in March, but I still drink decaf.
I grew up in New Jersey in the 80's - nuff said.
I am passionate about animals and considered being a veterinarian until I realized it was heavy on the science side of things! Science and I don't get along. {{shudder}}
When I was little and didn't have anyone to play with, I would play Monopoly by myself - if you want to know how ask me. It was very systematic. And fair.
I do not like having curly hair.
I had a birth mark next to my nose. It was surgically removed when I was 14 so people would stop telling me I had a spot of chocolate milk on my face. :(
I cannot speak in pig latin no matter how hard I try.
I've had glasses since I was 4. But I spent a month in Greece NOT wearing them because I ripped my contacts and I was too vain to wear glasses near the "cute boy" in our group. Therefore causing my eyes to deteriorate. Now I can't see anything!
I threw a javelin in college and was 3rd in the nation my junior year. There is a video to prove it, and I was just stupid enough to post it...scrunchy and all.
I am scared of roller coasters.
I've always been an artist - maker. When I was little my mind would create things WAY before I could figure out how to make them with my hands. Hmmm...that's still the way I work. Some things never change. :)
I dream in full color and my dreams are extremely vivid, and often odd. If I talk to you during the day, chances are you will make it into my dream at night.
I wear high heels to make me stand up straighter and feel more confident. But I'm 5'10" in real life, so I'm usually taller than everyone anyway!
I adore tattoo's. I have 5 very meaningful ones. If I was younger, I would probably do a full sleeve on each of my arms. I don't look at them as rebellion. I see them as personal expression and art.
I must have my toes painted at all times. Naked toes scare me.
Which brings me to feet. I hate them. Do not touch me with yours. Remember # 9, I can throw a javelin.
I know most of the words to every popular song in the 80's. Even if I haven't heard it in twenty years I can sing it...verbatim. Ask my children. They will roll their eyes and wholeheartedly agree.
I am scared of the phone. It makes me physically ill to have to answer it. And then I sweat. This is why I never answer the phone.
I really don't sweat, unless I'm nervous or it is extremely hot. Then I sweat a lot.
I love getting into a really hot car in the summer. Probably because I don't sweat.
and a bonus...just because. I have no pride. Clearly. See all of the above.

Off to my conference I go, with all that baggage out of the way. Whew, I feel better!

Now tell me something about you that I don't know! Come on, your secret is safe with me. Pinky swear!

Fashion App Instagram Style introducing Trendabl

Love fashion? Enjoy perusing the pages of Lucky, InStyle, or Elle? Do you scan Pinterest for the latest trends? Instagram freak?

Ok, maybe I'm talking to myself here...but I find that highly unlikely.

I found a new app. An app that is taking fashion and social networking to a whole new level. Come close, closer. I'll tell you, but just you.

It's called Trendabl and it works a lot like instagram. Take a photo, tag a photo, apply filter, post. You can "like" and re-share others photos as well.

What is unique, is that it is ALL fashion. AND...you can add a the category ie: dress, pants, accessories, store, color and price.

Why I love it.

It's like instagram, which I adore.

But it's so much more.

Sometimes I need to hone my craft so to speak, and looking at your adorable kids and pets, and what you had for dinner doesn't do that for me. So I'll save that for my personal enjoyment. This is for, ahem...."work".

I can browse what's popular. I can search for shoes, or pants, handbags or jewelry etc. Best part? When someone posts something I love, if they have done it correctly, I know the price and where to purchase. BONUS!

It works just like all your other fav social networks.

Ask Lisa - what's my favorite guy trend for 2012

Fashion for guys. They have it easy-er. Somewhat. A bit. Maybe because I'm not one. Whatever.

Philip from Virginia wanted to know if I care about men's style at all, and if I do, what one trend am I loving for the spring.

Philip, I love men's style. I love seeing a well dressed man.

But the trend that had me running to my husband and squealing. Which also induced a look of bewilderment followed by the rolling of eyes.

Are saddle shoes.

I love them.

They are retro, yet funky and modern. Preppy, yet not. The design is sleek and classic and BOLD! They rock the two tone texture mix.

Best part, they go as well with jeans as they do your fav suit or dress pants.

That husband with the rolling eyes will definitely be needing a pair of these. Maybe I can even convince my man-child. Better not press my luck.

Favorite thing - Rascal Flatts

Half of you already tuned out..trust me...I know exactly what you are thinking.

"Country music? Rascal Flatts? Lisa, have you lost your mind? Next you'll be telling us you like square dancing too."

Now just hold on, give me a second to explain.

I have never been country music girl. My mother used to "twang" along with Willy Nelson, and...get this....yodel!! The scars may never heal.

I'm an 80's girl. An alternative 80's girl at that. I love music. Good music. Maybe the reason I married a musician :) but I NEVER...EVER...listened to country music.

That is...

...until my oldest daughter fell in love with it. You win some you lose some. For the sake of your children you do many things you say you will never do. She works for me...she plays it in the studio...it grew on me.

Much of it i still do not care for. And I can only take it in small doses. But this group...Rascal Flatts...I like them. There is something about their stories in their songs grew on me. Their music is flawless, their melodies beautiful. Somewhere along the way I became a fan.

Then I had the privilege of meeting them in Nashville in February...did I mention that we are BFF's?

Needless to say when I was invited to see a one night exclusive theatre event showing of their film Changed I jumped at the chance.

If I liked them before, I love them now. Hearing their hearts. Knowing their life stories. Their commitment to their families and each other. It was endearing...truly.

And this new album? It is awesome. I've been blasting it in the studio ever since the movie. I love all the songs...but the title track "Changed" is my fav.

These are real guys, making music because it's what they are born to do. What Joe Don can do on a guitar is mesmerizing...and Jay DeMarcus is equally talented on those strings and keys. And then there is Gary LeVox. What he can do with his voice....it is truly an instrument. Smooth. Perfectly pitched. And it just might make me dizzy. I told you...I'm sucked in!

Come on...step outside your box. Give country music a try...a listen...one toe tap. I promise, you do not have to start wearing cowboy boots and overalls. However, I do highly recommend the boots!

Fashion tip Tuesday - channeling your inner Katniss

Side braids. Camp gear. Boots.

Unless you live under a rock you have heard of Hunger Games and the phenomena it has created. And admit it....if you are a girl you are ready to embrace your inner Katniss.

There is something about her raw beauty. Her rock hard determination. Her passion. Her tough girl persona. Something within us...hungers to be like her.

Ok, maybe hunting really isn't your thing. Maybe the idea of lodging yourself in a tree makes you queasy. Wrestling fire? Not so much.

But how about embracing the crazy amount of hunger games-esque fashion trends that are surfacing everywhere. Now this is fashion that speaks to my heart. I believe Katniss and I are long lost sisters.

Last week in Los Angeles I happened to wander past Christian Louboutin's store. The gravitational pull was strong. My inner diva was calling. Who is Christian louboutin? Have you ever seen those famous red sole sky high heels? Yes, he is the genius behind those. {{swoon}} I resisted the urge to enter, but I lingered outside, long enough to see these.

The gladiator is back...truly hunger games....truly Louboutin....truly awesome. Price tag? $2795.00. {gulp} Remember...he is the master trend setter...there are other options for us real huntresses.

Do you love his extreme tall sandal look? Then this fearsome tall pair will have you rocking your Katniss look in no time. By Urban outfitters the Ecote for $49 in black or brown.

Favorite Things - Chocolate Chip Cookies DUH!

Drooling on your keyboard may occur, consider yourself warned!

What is it with a perfect cookie? The crisp outer edge, the soft and rich chocolate chips. The crumble and flake when you take your first nibble. Yum.

Last month I decided to whip myself into shape, somewhat quickly. I gave up sugar, carbs, alcohol and caffeine. I know crazy right? But honestly I felt so amazing!

What did I miss the most? Well, the caffeine addiction was hard to kick, but once that was conquered it was the sugar carb combo...namely, a cookie....or two, or three. Thus the problem!

These cookies are my tried and true favorites. The are NOT your average everyday chocolate chip cookie, trust me. My craving is pretty intense today, so my butter is softening on the counter, and you get to indulge as well.

I know this isn't a typical favorite thing, but these cookies have possessed my brain...so TAH DAH...you can inherit my craving too. You're welcome!

*warning - well, just don't say I didn't warn you how amazing they are*

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup of butter flavored shortening

1/2 cup of butter, softened

3/4 cup of packed brown sugar

3/4 cup white sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1 Tablespoon coffee-flavored liqueur

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups rolled oats

2 cups chocolate chips ( I recommend DARK chocolate - you know, it's healthy :)

1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375'

2. Grease cookie sheets

3. In a large bowl, cream together the shortening, butter, brown sugar and white sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and coffee liqueur. (It will be VERY liquidy at this point...that's okay)

4. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt: stir into the sugar mixture. Mix in the oats, chips and nuts.

5. Roll tablespoons of dough into balls, and place them 2 inches apart onto the prepared cookie sheets.

6. Bake for 10-12 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Cool on a wire rack for a few minutes before eating!!

An Airplane and a Sale

Favorite thing - regrouping alone time

Do you ever feel labeled? Do you ever feel as if no one really knows you? Do you feel misunderstood?

That's kind of where I need to camp today.

Mom, wife, jewelry artist, creative, chief chef, fashionista, taxi driver, writer. Those are the hats I try to balance...on a good day.

But it's hard. And I don't do all things well.

Don't get me wrong, I love what I do...but just like you...I am constantly reaching for the brass ring of balance. Reaching, not grabbing. Reaching, fingers glancing, barely touching. Always fearing that someone will get let down in the process. Fearing failure.

And what happens is I end up being the one let down and disappointed, and then there is aftermath.

It's hard trying to be all things, for all people. It's hard building a business. I work all the time. And when I'm not working, I need to be there for my family. That leaves little time for extra-curricular activities...like friendship and fun. I'm not complaining, just explaining. That part is often misunderstood by others.

So if you feel neglected, or even rejected for that matter....please do not. You ARE not. I'm just juggling. And if you have ever watched a circus juggler, they drop stuff. Even the good ones.

Sometimes I just need to regroup. Sometimes I just need to answer the question -- to which I know the answer -- Am I ever Enough? Funny, I wrote a post on that!

Why is this a Favorite Things post? Because truly, one of my favorite things to do when I'm feeling like this, is be alone. Not for a long time, but long enough to savor the quiet, answer the questions in my head, and think. Block out all noise, block out all pressure - even for just a minute - and be still.

Today, in the midst of preparing for a sale, filling orders, teaching children, driving all over creation, processing all that is whirling in my head, and feeling vastly inadequate...I'm going to do just that. Be still.

Of course I'll be wearing cute shoes while I do it...but that is beyond the point! ** Just didn't want you to think this was a total "Eeyore post". **
