Little known fact...I have a BFA in photography. My deepest heartfelt desire? To be a National Geographic photographer. Lofty aspirations? Maybe. Am I disappointed that I haven't done that...yet. No, not really.

My love of capturing images still fires me up every time I have my camera in hand...even if it's my cell phone!

On Friday's I will share with you my favorites from the week, sometimes silly, sometimes informative, sometimes just a photo for the sake of the photo.

This week a few cell phone favorites. My daughter Isabel after her play - she was fantastic by the way! My newest ring {{ love }}. Finally, my youngest daughter, Tahlia, getting her ears pierced - from excitement, to apprehension, to fear, to pure joy!

Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year: Tangerine Tango

Visions of summer. Splashes of tropical. Thoughts of warmth.

That is what this years Pantone Color of the Year does to me. Tangerine Tango, which is really orange with a pinch of coral. Each year I look forward to the color of the year, and this year is no exception!

I know what you're thinking. Orange? Really? How in the world do I incorporate THAT into my wardrobe. And even more importantly, why should I?

Time to release your inner fashionista and have some fun with color. Seriously, this color is all about fun. And when I show you some options you can easily incorporate into your wardrobe, I'm sure you might give in...a little. And don't think about this color as fashion only, think about how you can use it in your everyday life.

This color evokes so much vibrancy and energy. I think we will all benefit from its influence! I definitely have an Orange Crush going on!

2. Naturally this color makes me dream of summer and warmer days. Aren't these just about perfect? I found them on Zappos for $60.

4. Of course OPI is on top of things with their version of the color. Since I don't paint my finger nails, you know the whole metal smith thing, my toes are going to be sporting this color all summer long! I'm sure you can find this anywhere you purchase your OPI but Amazon is carrying it for only $4.66!
5. Now think about adding some Tangerine at home. Check out this GUBBSKAR bath mat from Ikea for only...are you ready....$2.99! Shoot, buy 2 or 3!
6. Need to splurge? I never purchase handbags that are uber expensive, but if I did, this one makes me totally swoon! Dooney & Bourke 'Dillen II Letter Carrier Crossbody Bag is gorgeous, and in tangerine, it is SURE to get you noticed! {gulp} $158.00.
7. What about this adorable linen dress from LanaStepul? So sweet! $179.00.
8. Last but never least, one of my favorite sites to shop, FreePeople. They speak to the boho artist in me! I believe I can totally pull off tangerine clothing with this skirt. I love the flow, the length, everything about it! It will be a staple in my summer wardrobe. $88.

Things I cannot live without

Rummaging through my drawers, reaching in the familiar places, grasping the shape your hand knows all to well. Do you have those "things" that you consistently use every day? So much so if they were to run out, or go missing, you might just panic...a little?

These are the items that make my mornings a little smoother. My hair a little bouncier. And my face, well, my face the best I can do!

OK, so maybe I CAN live without these fabulous items. But I don't want to. Ever.

In the next couple weeks I want to share my "go to's" with you, and maybe add some of your favs along the way!

This first item I want to divulge to you I have had a long time relationship with. We are practically BFF's!

Fresh out of the shower I know I have only minutes before my very dry, curly hair wants to take on a life of its own. I do wrap it in a towel...briefly...but there is no towel rubbing! Are you kidding me? That would prove disastrous, trust me.

As soon as it is no longer dripping wet I reach for the most inexpensive hair product I use.... John Frieda's FrizzEase. This stuff is the bomb-diggity. It coats each strand, holding in the moisture and out the frizz. Brilliant. In the summer I am known to keep bottles in my vehicle for those...ahem...humid moments!

What I love about this product is that it is available EVERYwhere. Even if I happen to forget it when traveling I just need to find a drug store and VIOLA' I'm back in business! The cost is always under $10 and I am certainly worth that....right?

Do you Dare? Fashion Risk Time.

I know you have seen them. Scattered on magazine pages. Pinned on Pinterest.

What are they? Those fashionable items that we love...but we would never dare try ourselves.

But what if you did? What if you took ONE risk?

It's just fashion. It's just for fun. Right?

I've had curly hair my whole life. Pin curls as a baby. Fuzzy split ends as a teenager. Did I mention I grew up in New Jersey in the 80's? Need I say more?

My entire life I have dreamt of long straight tresses, hair that would make people stop and take notice. Instead I had big hair...no matter what. You couldn't "play" with my hair - you know what girls do - comb and braid etc...that just made it bigger. I still hate swimming. Why? Because curly hair just doesn't dry right. *embarrassing*

All that to say, hair has never been fun for me, or something I embraced as an accessory...until recently.

I have an amazing hair stylist. Gene, at The Edge Salon. He knows me. He knows my hair. We jest that it's really "his" hair...my only request...don't cut it!! Visions of a bad 80's Michael Jackson hair and something resembling a Q-tip come to mind. *shudder*

Right before my first Art exhibition this past summer he suggested color. Not just color. Purple. My girls had done it. Why not me? His salon uses an ionic color. It bonds. Well. I have had rich purple segments of hair ever since July...and I LOVE it!

But this is not for the faint of heart. It's permanent. And it lasts. My color has hardly faded and with only a touch up in the fall, it is still vibrant and beautiful.

So, what if you are not ready for THAT kind of risk or commitment? I have a new suggestion. Extensions!

In December, Gene put a few bright pink extension pieces in my hair.

The result? Fabulous!

The risk? Minimal.

They were attached in just about 30 minutes and can be removed just as quickly.

For the first time I really love my hair. It's fun. It's sassy. It's unique. It's me.

The extensions are made by a company called Klix. They weave into your hair using micro links, it's a very thin connection piece, and virtually undetectable. And actually very comfortable.

mine have grown out a bit...don't judge the roots please!

I was a bit wary having curly hair. What would they do? How would they dry?

http://pinterest.com/studiojewel/They dry straight, but they curl beautifully. Best part? They hold the curl! Basically you treat the extensions exactly the way you treat your own hair. Comb. Brush. Wash. Condition. Dry. Flat Iron. Curl. Get the idea?

Who knows? Maybe I'll have Gene give me an entire head of extensions next time. Not pink ones silly. They have every hair color...they can match you perfectly!

Depression. The continuing story.

This may be the last post of this kind. The last of my more introspective personal type views into my life. Who knows? I might start another blog, with all my abundance of time, where I have these moments of refection....but for now I'm going in a bit of a different direction.

But before I change. Before I give you fashion tips that will rock your socks off. Before I start guiding you on a path of a living a more earth friendly lifestyle. Before we explore cities and vacation spots that make us swoon. I wanted to leave you with this.

Last April I shared with you my struggle with depression...my tattoo...and a ring. Your response was amazing. I still receive emails and messages that warm my heart, as well as make my cry with you. I love that by opening up the recesses of my soul to you, you felt a kinship, a sense of belonging, a sense of not being all alone.

Praise and Coffee magazine asked if I would share the "rest of the story". Well, at least what I could say in 1000 words. There are still so many untold facets. Pieces and parts that may never make sense. Dark places left unvisited. But if by sharing my story one of you feels SOMETHING, then it was worth exposing my underbelly to you.

Depression is real. It is awful. It is life changing. It sucks. If you feel like it's drawing you in, get help! But never, ever feel like you are alone. Or that it makes you less of a human. It cannot define you. Don't let it. It does not define me...nor will it ever.

I am Creative. Lighthearted. Witty. Compassionate. Loyal. Fiercely protective. And often Goofy. You can define me by my boots, or my tattoos, or my purple hair. But my depression? Never.

Depression. It is a strange and ugly beast. Well disguised, it chooses its victims carefully. Even victims too young to understand. The thoughtful child. The creative child. One always considered too sensitive. One who bears the weight of the world more heavily than another.

It can begin with the girl sitting at her desk…9 years old… wondering why her thighs seem so large. Even though they are not. Or why her face is not perfect like her friends. Even though it is.

It makes thoughts wander and go places into deep recesses of the mind even most adults dare not travel. It seeks to gain a foothold. To find a place to fester, with a plan to create havoc later in life.

No one is immune from its attack. Not even the girl from the stable home. Well loved. Lover of Jesus. Even she is no match for the attack of THIS beast. An invisible assailant seeking to destroy from within.

That girl is me.

From a very young age, I found myself very content to be alone. My creative mind would wander to mysterious places, dreaming fantastic dreams, and inventing countless gadgets. But that same creative mind full of color of beauty would often wander to places dark with fear. Places that made me hate myself and feel so very alone.

Distracted by sports and the 80’s my small bouts with depression went unnoticed, undiagnosed…written off as moodiness or teenage discontent. And even though it felt like so much more to me, I agreed with those older and wiser.

Sometimes the weight I felt was almost unbearable. My mind would race. I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I wanted to scream. I’d cry out to God and hear nothing. That’s when the first thoughts of suicide crossed my mind. Not so much as thoughts as, little scenes that would quickly, visibly, play out in my mind. Then they would disappear. I didn’t dwell there. The beast wasn’t ready. Not yet.

College. A fresh start. A new beginning. Maybe this is where I would find myself. Find others like me. Maybe here I would not feel so alone. But again. Feelings of inadequacy haunted my dreams. Shattered ideals of perfection fell all around me. I would never be as talented, never be as beautiful. Never be wanted. The beast stirred.

By now I had dismissed the God who loves me. Dismissed…not rejected. How could He love a girl like me. It seemed as if even He had rejected me. He would not hear my silent cries. He would not answer my countless prayers. Where was He?

I married. Against all better judgment. Against everything I knew in my heart. But I just did not want to be alone. This man loved me, or so I thought. I believed this might be the answer. Maybe now I would feel complete. I was wrong. And the beast began to laugh, knowing he was gaining momentum.

But he was wrong for now. Alone again. I searched for answers. I searched for help. I searched for meaning. And Jesus was there. He was waiting for me. Waiting for me to see he had been there all along. Waiting for me to really give all of myself to him. To let him tell me how much I am worth. And I fell into his arms. It was beautiful.

I married again. My soul mate, my best friend. HE loved me for me, imperfections and all. My new husband left the corporate world to pursue full time music ministry. I became a pastor’s wife and a new mom, so much change. Soon after we were blessed with a second child and then a third! After our Isabel was born, I just couldn’t seem to “get on top of life again”. Strangely enough my doctor recommended anti-depressants, “maybe you have a touch of post-partum”, he said. Frightened and confused I agreed to try them. They helped.

We moved. Child number four was on the way. Working full time from home, raising our children, and trying to be the “perfect” wife. Too busy to see the signs that the beast was scheming, planning. Too overwhelmed to recognize them. Too scared to let anyone know that it even existed within me. I plugged on. What else could I do? I was strong. I was capable. I had no choice.

Another move. Back home to Michigan to plant a church. Here we faced a life altering, mind boggling disaster and the beast had his foothold. When you have given your life to full time ministry and receive such rejection from the very church you serve, the hurt runs very deep. After years of consuming anti depressants to numb the pain, they simply stopped working.

The desperate feeling was swallowing me. My marriage was failing. I was failing as a mother. The walls began to crumble. I knew I needed to get help.

But the beast fought back. Every forward step I took, he would use his onslaught of weaponry collected over the years against me. I was tormented in my dreams. I was tormented in my awake time. I was fighting for my life. And devil himself was fighting for my soul. The evil darkness was so real, so thick. I felt helpless and terrified.

This was several years ago now. The journey was VERY long, and difficult and emotional. Not just for me, but for everyone around me. When I painfully look back I can hardly believe that WAS me. I felt absent from my body. I felt so very alone. I WAS determined to beat this very real thing that threatened to take over my life. Or worse...to take my life.

Daily thoughts of suicide consumed me. I planned everything. Then I would scream out to God to save me from myself...but I thought He wasn't listening. He was. He would give me glimmers of hope. Something to grasp onto and snap me back to reality.

Slowly I began to realize He was holding me in the palm of His hand. I was not alone. He was fighting for me. I belonged to Him and He would not let me go. I needed a reminder. I wanted to be reassured. I did not want to do something foolish out of desperation; I would not let this beast rule me. So I gave myself a reminder. A permanent one.

A tattoo, in Hebrew, on my wrist…. CHILD OF GOD. Because I AM a daughter of the King. He created me. He cares for me. Even if NO ONE else does. And EVERY time I see my tattoo I feel that reassurance.

My story does not end there; in fact it is just the beginning. I am so much stronger now. The beast is still there. And every so often it will raise its ugly head. I can feel it. Taunting me. Dragging me down in my thoughts. Telling me I’m not enough.

But it’s a lie.

I am a metal smith. I make jewelry. I now design pieces for others to help them fight the beast. Visible reminders that they are a “child of God” and that they are, in fact, Enough.

That is my passion, that is my ministry. Maybe you need a reminder that you belong to someone greater than the world. The only one who will be there when the rest of the world turns its back.

Your life is precious. Sacred.

Thank you and goodbye 2011

~ grateful ~ feeling or showing gratitude or feeling thankful

I use that word a great deal. It seems fairly inadequate to describe the true matter of my heart.

It's the morning of New Years Eve....the coffee cake is baking, the children are sleeping, and all is quiet. This peacefulness causes me to reflect. To remember. To have my pensieve moment. To look back at 2011.

When I do, I am...well....grateful. For the year. For the experiences. Mostly...for all of you.

In THIS space....on THIS blog, I shared with you "thankful thursdays", kids birthday celebrations, new designs. There were the glimpses into my ongoing struggle with depression, and the ups and downs of being a business owner.

I gave you silly glimpses into MY crazy life and quirky personality, along with our journey into gluten free. I talked about my girls, my boy, my husband, my dogs. I was introspective and thoughtful, and sometimes just downright odd!

You looked into my studio and I tried to teach you a few things along the way. We shared recipes and ideas.

We grieved with the Japanese when they were struck by tragedy.

We learned how to "pin".

I made my "search" story...which I still love by the way!

I tried to encourage you to be a cheerleader for yourself...and love yourself...and be "ok" with yourself! I shared with you how to make your craft...your art...your full time vocation.

We came together...YOU made a difference...to help those in Joplin affected by the horrid tornado.

My daughter donated her hair and you cheered her on. I taught metal smithing classes at my first show, and you cheered ME on!

There were news spots and stressful days and times where we needed to learn to "hold fast" together.

We made vision boards, strawberry jam and grew cucumbers.

I even went on our first "REAL" family vacation and you humored me by looking at my photos!

I entered an art competition and PAINTED - I was an artist in purgatory. I was scared and insecure and you encouraged me!

And then there were light hearted days of boots and fashion and photos from my phone.

But there were days of struggling with being "enough"...and thinking about a "railroad switch". I even shared my naked face.

You celebrated with me when I was added to the ABC news Made in America guide...and supported me when China decided to steal my designs.

Why do I share all these posts? It's as much for me as for you. I am amazed...and grateful...for the amount of support you have offered me. You have been the wind beneath my wings...truly.

So...thank you...for being you. Because truly....I think you're awesome.

Happy New Years Eve friends. I raise my glass to you!

Now back to my boots and a little something from Wolverine and CAT

It's never "should I wear boots or not"....it's which boots should I wear?

Some of you are very aware of my love affair with boots. I am passionate about them. This is one of the few privileges of living in a cold climate....boot season starts early and ends late. However I'm fairly sure, if I lived in a warm climate I would be the crazy lady wearing boots in 90 degrees. True story.

Why do I love boots so much? I think boots exude their own style. They add a certain "je ne sais quoi" to an ensemble. And when you can find a pair that compliments who YOU are? Well, that is a beautiful thing!

Wolverine, is an American founded company which began in 1883 right here in MY city, Grand Rapids, MI. They were founded on one man's belief that great things were possible...a motto I try to embrace each day. It really is a true success story of a man who wanted to make good products for good people. Simple. Amazing.

You may know this company better by some of their brands... CAT, Harley Davidson, Merrell, 1000 mile, 1883 Collections, Hush Puppies and Patagonia. Not names you usually associate with high end fashion...

...until now.

My heart is full

Where does one start? Where to begin?

With the ultimate in simplicity.

I knew you would be supportive. But I had no idea.

I knew this issue would upset you. But I didn't realize how many of you would take action.

I knew the local news MIGHT be interested. But I didn't think they would do a story right away.

My heart is full.

And although Alibaba.com still has my pirated designs for sale on their site, "things" are happening. I am confident in the end....good wins.

So thank you. To my friends old and new. For standing by my side. For supporting my art. For letting myself, and other artists like me, know that this type of behavior is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated.

I did receive an apology from the Etsyian who "stirred the proverbial pot" to begin with. She thought it was ludicrous that I would give you a link to purchase my work cheaper elsewhere. But I know you won't. She wished me luck taking down a Chinese giant. And although WE may not take them down....I believe our voice will be heard.

So here's to the little guy.

Here's to every individual that takes over their garage with their ideas. Here's to every girl that sketches on napkins and draws on the cover of her notebooks. When a China giant goes after the little guy...namely me

Do you ever feel like you're living in a dream. Do you ever sit back and wonder, is this really happening to me?

That was me...yesterday.

I have been working non stop. Ridiculous hours. Frantic pace. The whole nine yards.

It is incredibly hard, but also terribly rewarding. Filling everyones Christmas orders, knowing the small part I might play in someones happiness Christmas morning...well...that just makes me smile.

And then it hit.

The email, or rather the Etsy convo. I get tons a day, seriously at least 20-30, so I unsuspectingly opened it up to read this:

This woman accused me of stealing a design, as well as the photos. She called me "cheeky"! The photo attached was a screen shot of MY design, with my daughters wrist on a site called Alibaba.com.

It literally took my breath away. Heart beating faster. Nauseousness building.

How can this be?

I researched and found this link to my item for sale on their site, complete with my description as well as ALL five of my photos.

Violated.

I honestly don't know what to do. I don't have the funds or the time to take much legal action. And after even more research I learned they are the LEADING e-commerce site in China. CNBC just did a report on their great "success". Yes, success at stealing designs and recreating them. Nice Alibaba. Nice.

What still stings the most, is the fact that someone would accuse me of stealing a design. A design I created almost 2 years ago. A design I loved so much I took the time to create YouTube videos on how to wear it. A design that has been successful in my shop for a long time.

I know this is asking a lot...but if you would take the time to follow the link and report the item as fraudulent...I would be ever grateful. I know you have to create an account. I know this it time consuming. I know. But if this has happened to me. It's happened to countless others.

How is the "little guy" supposed to survive? How am I supposed to build a business when my well thought out designs are swiped "just like that"? How am I ever going to succeed?

My heart is heavy today. I hurt. Thanks for listening.

Winter Fashion Colors and Trends just in time for Christmas

Trends and fashion and fads. Oh my.

Some of you stay ahead of the trends. You have your fashionable wardrobe planned out before the season starts.

Others...ahem, like me...wing it and try to BE fashionable in the midst of the season.

So what's your must have colors and accessories for the season? I thought you would never ask!

The color scheme for winter carries over from fall and it is delicious! As you can see our color of the year, honeysuckle pink, has found its way into winter as well! I love that. A touch of pink can brighten up any dull winter wardrobe.

So what are your "must haves"?

Hat's are huge...and the fedora is back. A neutral basic color is best. Mine is gray and I love it...I wear it everywhere!

The color teal is hot...and so are dresses. InStyle Mag says skin tight is out - thank goodness - and flow-y is in. Can I get a hallelujah? I'm loving this teal slip dress from Free People. I think it's the perfect layering piece other dresses, or over leggings with a sweater. Possibilities? Endless! *and yes, I own it*

Boots for winter? First let's just say, even though I live in Michigan you cannot choose function over fashion all of the time. And knee high boots still remain popular! They work from skinny jeans to miniskirts with opaque tights. Mid height heel is best, and if you only buy one pair...go brown...best with jeans! (Stay tuned to read about my NEW favorite boots...so amazing....)

Feather trend? Still here. Don't care to look like a bird has nested in your hair...then what about earrings? These I love.

Over the knee socks. Still fabulous? Yes, but think thinner less chunky. More with skirts, less with jeans. I'm loving these that are available from Macy's. So adorable!

So what trend will you embrace for the winter?

I'm going with the hat and boots, and the over the knee socks. And maybe the earrings. Oh shoot, I think I'll wear them all!

But of course my fav jewelry accessory for winter is this necklace. It goes with everything and adds some jingle...so festive!

Navigating the tides of the sea.

Growth is painful, exhilarating, tumultuous.

Growth is an ebbing sea of ups and downs.

It is a welcome journey. It is what we have been working so hard for.

Right?

I present myself to you as a person grateful. Blessed. Excited. Exhausted.

Days of weathering the the ever changing surges of the sea, at times battered by squalls, but others calmly floating along on waters as brilliant as a summer sky. It is all part of the thrill of being an entrepreneur.

We strive and strive for the golden ring, but once it's within grasp, do we grab it? Do we allow our finger tips to reach even further, even though the stretch can be painful and taxing.

But what exactly is THAT prize?

For me, I get to be Captain of my vessel. Master of the sails.

The Christmas season is notoriously crazy. This year is not exception. Our studio is pulsating with a sense of urgency, the frenzy is rising. I welcome it. I loathe it. It excites me. It frustrates me. Emotions can be strangely vexing, can they not?

But I reach for the ring. My finger tips brush at it's shiny surface. I can feel the coolness of the metal.

Pause.

I consider navigating to calmer waters. Docking in a safe harbor. But then I will never taste the salty air. I will never catch my breath as the wind fills my sails. So I gather my crew and we cast off.

This is a journey. It's not so much about the destination.

But in all the busyness. I cannot even express to you the joy I experience in being chosen by you to create something that will be gifted to another. It is an honor. A privilege.

Stamping your love messages. Crafting your ornaments. Setting your stones. It thrills me.

*my fingers curve around the surface of the ring*

Thanksgiving. Black Friday. Sales and Specials.

Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful laid back day spent with the people I love the most. We laughed, we ate, we ran (well some of us did), we watched Muppet's, we played Trivial Pursuit, we laughed some more. It was just about perfect.

And although I'm prone to the "half empty" syndrome, today I choose to see my glass as overflowing. Anything I could want and desire is truly above and beyond what life has already gifted to me. And for that I am so very thankful.

This year I am also thankful for all of you. For those of you who stick around to read my blog and to be a continuous support of my art. To be able to work in my home studio, and choose to be the "stay at home mom" is more than I could ever hoped or imagined. I.am.grateful.

Scouring over black Friday ads, searching for the best deal, or getting up early in the morning are not my cup of tea. As a matter of fact, the paper lies on my coffee table mindless strewn aside and I haven't even taken a glance at what "deals" there are to grab. Christmas is how many days away? Don't even tell me.

It's a tradition....

The excitement builds. The nervous laughter ensues. The giddiness in the room takes over.

Is it a birthday?

Are we going on vacation?

No, it's Christmas Eve.

Now I do realize that Christmas holds all sorts of excitement for children across the globe. Eager ears listening for tiny hooves on the rooftop. Dreams of presents. Thoughts of Santa. But added to that is something extra in our home. Something that they look forward to each and every year.

It's a tradition.

Pajamas and ornaments. Yes, the pajamas they love, well, the girls love them since they just love new clothes...typical! But the ornaments. That is what they look forward to the most. What did I choose? What will it be? Does it reflect a milestone from THAT year, or is it something that will just make them smile. Those smiles feed my soul you know.

That was my motivation. This is why I felt the need to design my own ornament.

Be still....

In a society that runs on adrenaline and caffeine. In a home where there is constant activity. In a mind that races with ideas of grandeur and creativity. I heard the words...

BE STILL.

Excuse me?

BE STILL.

How is that physically possible? Emotionally possible? Mentally possible?

BE STILL.

I heard the voice. But to respond, to listen, to obey? That is a different story.

IF I am STILL who will do the laundry or make dinner or teach children or create jewelry. If I am STILL the world might end.

Strangely enough....it won't.

BE STILL.

The words rang true in my heart and in my soul. There was an deliberate need to stop and receive and listen. A need to BE STILL.

But why?

When everything is in constant motion there is no time for reflection or introspection. There is no time to hear God's voice. I was guilty of babble mode, telling him my thoughts my ideas asking my questions...but never slowing down enough to hear what he wanted to say to me.

But this I heard...

BE STILL.

In its biblical context the Hebrew word used in Psalm 46.10 for "still" means to cast down or let fall. To be relaxed....especially the hands. That may or may not have hit VERY close to home!

BE STILL.

Officially letting go, stopping motion.

So I gave in. I stopped. I listened.

It really is just about the make-up

"What should I be this year?" The dreaded Halloween question.

and then...

"Can I have make-up with that?"

There it is. See what I've created? They don't care about the costumes. It's all in the make-up.

So this year we had a stalk or corn, a woodland nymph and a monkey. We decided Noah, at 6'2" would probably frighten small children if he trick or treated, so he stayed home and welcomed our small guests.

Since I wrote the "Do you like your face" post on Monday, your kind words via email have been incredibly encouraging. Thank you. But each of you also had a burning question.

"What DO you use on your skin?"

In response, I thought I would tell you about my fabulous skin care products. Even better, I contacted the company and they agreed to do a giveaway for my readers. How's THAT for customer service?

Background story. Last October I attended the TypeAMom Conference in Asheville, North Carolina. Do you like your face?

The first thing people notice. The last thing they remember.

Ones face.

It is a unique entity. Totally yours. Unlike any others. Capable of expressing the heart and mirroring the soul.

You can mask it, but you cannot change it. It was handed down to you...a gift as you will. A picture of those who came before.

No small task.

Do you like your face?

From birth, my face was defective. Blemished. Marked. I didn't realize it of course until I was about four years old. There I was skipping through "Stop and Shop" with my mom, singing a silly song in my head, imagining a fantastic world I wished to live in, but then I heard her. My keen sense of hearing is a gift and curse. Sounds from across a room resonate clear within my head...

"Mommy," she said, " that little girl has a spot on her face."

Crash. Burn. Sink.

This would be the first of many years of cruel jokes, mean spirited attacks and painful words directed at the small birthmark ever so carefully placed on my face, next to my nostril. The color of chocolate milk. Flush with my skin. Distinctly mine. Placed by God, detested by me.

My parents lovingly reassured me that this was not a defect but a beauty mark. It made me unique and special. I thought it made my ugly and different.

I began to hate my face.

I learned to walk in such a way that you wouldn't see that side of my face. Turning my head "just so". I found numerous excuses to leave a room so I would not have to be introduced to someone new. I was insecure and embarrassed.

Maybe it was pure vanity. I tend to think I just wanted to be LIKE everyone else. I did not want to be special. I didn't want to give them something to point out. "oh, you remember Lisa, she's that girl with the birthmark on her face". I wanted to blend.

The years of childhood are not playful and painless. Don't be disillusioned. They CAN be full of hurt and disgust. Sarcasm and pain. Taunts and teases. Why are children so cruel?

My self esteem laid in peril.

Maybe that's when my parents noticed. When they realized this was a very big deal for me. They heard my plea. A plastic surgeon was visited, the plans were made for removal. {relief} {joy}

I remember it as if it were yesterday. I was in high school.

The smell of the out-patient room, alcohol scented linens, floor cleaner, sterile. The cloth they placed over my face that I strained to see through. The sound of their voices discussing each part of the procedure. And the idealistic thought that this would change everything....forever.

Little did I know how deep the wounds had cut. No vitamin E would eliminate those scars. Not until many years later of unearthing.

But my face.

Whole.

Unmarked.

Void of the typical teenage plague of acne.

Smooth.

Mine.

I didn't realize those features were coveted by others. I was still wearing the shroud of self consciousness. I embraced that veil for many years until one day...not more than 4 years ago...a stranger, a woman asked me a question.

"What do you use on your skin, it is truly radiant!"

She will never know what she did for me. Door unlocked. Heart open. I rushed to my room to look in a mirror as if for the very first time. My eyes seemingly clear from the fog of disillusionment.

My face.

I smiled. I looked at the scar I still bear and smiled again.

MY face.

Uniquely gifted to me. Crafted. Designed. He makes no mistakes.

Something changed in me that day. Funny, how the words of one woman could erase the cuts of many.

My face is not perfect...but it is perfectly mine. I look at it differently now. It is changing. I am aging. I know that will not be easy, but I will not loathe it.

I take care of my skin now. I use "real" product...day and night.

I love my face.
With my eyes I see the faces of MY children.

When I press my cheek against theirs, I know we share something.

Ones face.

I need a new water cooler to hang around.

In talking to myself...yes I really do that...several questions keep coming up. Can I really do all things well? What is my motivation?

Sometimes all I really want to do is bake bread. Or decorate my mantel. Or play a game. Or paint for fun. Or plant a garden. Or write a story.

Sometimes the pull to do other things than fashion jewelry is very strong. Sometimes the idea of heading to the studio makes me feel sick.

Light bulb.

Time to process and re-evaluate.

At what point did my train head down the wrong track?

With the pressure to succeed and the power of social media I am keenly aware of what "everyone" else is doing. We've talked about this before. That bloody two edged sword. I am so easily sucked into the comparison game. It's one I have played since I was a child. I'm good at it, dang it. But it's not the water cooler I yearn to linger around.

I work so much and so often. I have my small people around me and I'm with them, but am I "with" them? Usually I'm thinking about what I need to do next to sell more, promote more, make more.

Please don't misread me, I love my job. I love making jewelry. I love FIRE. I delight in the creative process.

When I designed this ring the other day, my heart sang. Why? Because not only did I fabricate something I adore, but I am able to share that with you. The prospect of making someone else happy with that very design fires me up.

However, I have another reality. The "have to". I have to work. I don't have the luxury to just "be". Our life requires me to have a job, and I love being a contributor to our family income. For a time when my husband was unemployed we counted on my income implicitly. I think that's when my train jumped the track. I believe that in that era, when the pressure was so high to succeed for the very sake of funding our basic needs, I found myself in this frenzy of more more more.

But seriously. Since when is more ever enough?

Train whistle. Railroad switch.

New direction. New normal.

One that exists in my head and on my heart. One that will be healthier for me and so in turn make me a better wife and mom. One that feeds my creative side. One that plays more games. One that writes more. One that has more coffee with friends.One that bakes more breads. One that braids more hair. One that plays more catch.

Breathe.

Just breathe.

Will the business go away if I stop my constant promoting and "working it"?

Possibly.

But my gain? A new found freedom that I crave. More real time with my kids. More time to embrace me.

Welcome to my water cooler.

We talk creative ideas. We encourage each other in our passions. We get excited to hear who won that riveting game of Uno last night. We want to know what your concocting for dinner tonight. We have remedies for toothaches and cramps. We are community. We celebrate each other. We hug more. We like each other.
