Planning a Smooth Ride for Life, a Northwestern Mutual Client Story

MILWAUKEE, December 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Bob Schrank, from Gurnee, Ill., started riding a tricycle when he was just two years old. He completed his first long–distance bicycle ride when he was only 3. Needless to say, cycling quickly established itself as an important foundation in Bob’s life. But when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in his early 20s, his days of long–distance riding were suddenly threatened.

Through determination and careful planning – both from a physical and financial perspective – Bob was able to remount. Today he is riding as well as ever, and is an integral member of Team Type 1 racing, a world–class athletic program for athletes with diabetes.
This is his story.

In 1992, Bob Schrank’s world changed. The avid cyclist was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and began experiencing symptoms associated with the disease.
“I thought my vision’s going since I’m working so many hours. I’m losing weight since I’m working so many hours. Classic symptoms of type 1 diabetes,” Bob said.
Once diagnosed, Bob knew that he had to make fundamental changes to his lifestyle. He was determined, though, to continue cycling. In order to do this, he turned to the power of planning.
“Fail to plan, plan to fail,” said Bob. “There was an immense amount of planning that had to take place before I could eat or exercise.”
Bob began monitoring his blood sugar 12–14 times a day.

Additionally, before riding long distances, Bob ensured he had the proper food and medication with him in the event that his blood sugar dropped significantly.
Bob also took a hard look at his finances, ensuring that he and his family were protected in the event of an emergency. Shortly after his diagnosis, he purchased a life insurance policy from Northwestern Mutual. He and his wife, Joy, credit Bob’s mom for influencing this decision.
“I’m glad he listened to her advice,” Joy said. “It just meant everything. We could have that peace of mind without paying an arm and a leg.”

Since purchasing his life insurance policy, Bob has continued to work closely with Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Advisor Peter Leone on a long–term financial plan.
“In Bob’s situation, he’s very aware of his current risk, and that’s why he has been so focused throughout his lifetime on a planning process,“ said Peter. “When I think of Bob and his situation and the things he has to overcome every single day, I am amazed at what he has accomplished.“
Whether creating financial security, living a healthy lifestyle or taking a long–distance bike ride, a successful plan is achieved by setting and accomplishing goals.

Northwestern Mutual recognizes and applauds stories like Bob’s as an example of someone who continues to strive for victory for his team and his family.

Your Guide to Bike Trail Safety

Whether you are planning to test your strength and stamina by tackling the more challenging routes near your home or explore the easier ones at a leisurely pace, it is a good idea to think about basic safety precautions before setting off. Sticking to cycle trails may help you to avoid some of the dangers of the road, such as careless motorists and pedestrians, but there are other things that you need to consider when exploring the countryside on two wheels.

•	Preparation – This point applies to all routes but especially to the longer and more demanding ones. Make sure to study the trail carefully while you are still at home so that you are aware of any obstacles and the type of surfaces that you will encounter. Take note of the weather forecast and dress appropriately. If you already own some decent racing bike clothing that is waterproof, you can probably use it when tackling cross country trails. If not, you might like to invest in some good quality garments to keep you warm and dry.

•	Safety gear – If you are new to cycling and do not have any equipment yet, one of the first items that you should buy is a cycle helmet. Although it possible to find cheap examples, both on-line and in physical stores across the country, it is better to economise in other areas as a good quality helmet could literally save your life.

•	Cycle maintenance – It is important to ensure that your machine is in good working order before setting off. You will not want to have to deal with mechanical problems when all your focus should be on the track ahead of you. A careful visual inspection is a good start and will help you to spot any obvious faults. However, it is also worth testing each moving part individually to make sure it is functioning properly. If you will be tacking steep gradients, pay particular attention to the brakes and gears.

•	Food and water – For longer routes, make sure that you take adequate supplies with you. Cycling on a hot day can lead to dehydration if you do not take on enough liquids during the ride and carbohydrate-rich snacks will help to ensure that your energy levels do not drop too quickly.

•	Stay alert – All your preparation could be in vain if you fail to pay attention to your surroundings when you are tackling off-road trails. You should focus on the terrain at all times to ensure that you have time to avoid any unexpected obstacles and you should also keep an eye out for other people along the way. If the route that you have chosen bisects or follows any bridleways, make sure that you are ready to take evasive action if you should happen to come face to face with a horse and rider.

I think I forgot how to ride a bike I haven't been on one in so long. My only workouts for the past year have mostly been running.

I've undergone a lot of changes since December 29, 2011. I've gone through a divorce, moved out of my house, to a new town, got a new job, changed jobs, got laid off from that job and am now unemployed right before the holiday season.

Anyways, biking wasn't part of my life in 2012. I still own three bikes but am not sure how much use they will get. I brought my Felt Breed single speed cyclocross bike out to my boyfriends house. He lives in Loxahatchee, Florida on a dirt road, surrounded by more dirt roads so my road bike and triathlon bike are a bit of overkill out here.

He has a 900 pound mountain-ish type of bike and really isn't into biking. I am trying to either:

A. Coerce him into riding his bike.

B. Get him a better bike so he can keep up with me.

The last time I went out on my cyclocross bike I was chased by a large stray dog that smacked right into my bike. Luckily, I am an okay biker and managed to stay upright and not fall down in front of the minivan that was behind me. I also managed not to get mauled by the dog, but it kind of took the fun out of that workout.

Anyways, hopefully the new year will bring some new motivation to get back on my bike.

Bike Diva Likes Green Drinks

Last Monday I posted a review of The Healthy Green Drink Diet book to my Cuisine Diva blog: Healthy Green Drink Diet Book. I mentioned in the review that I would be trying to add at least one green drink to my diet, each day, for the first part of the week. I have been wanting to drop a few pounds, and starting my day off with a health infused green drink seemed the perfect way to jump start my weight loss plan.

I find that the key to loosing weight is to keep my metabolism fired up all day long. So instead of eating just a few, large meals each day, I eat many smaller meals throughout the day. I call this kind of eating grazing, because you are eating every couple of hours. This helps to maintain a normal blood sugar level too, as you shouldn't experience any highs or lows with your blood sugar level while eating small amounts of food throughout the day.

Bike Diva's Daily Journal Entries

Here are my daily journal entries of my results from following the Healthy Green Drink Diet.

Monday, April 2nd; Weight - 148.5 Pounds

I started my day by making a Just Peachy smoothie, which is featured on page 67 of The Healthy Green Drink Diet book. I tried to follow the Paleo diet for most of the rest of the day while I was working out of my apartment. I knew I would probably eat regular food that night for dinner, as I was planning on going to my boyfriends house and he isn't currently following any specific eating plan.

Pre Breakfast - Just Peachy smoothie

Breakfast - 3 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon, mushrooms, thyme and garlic

Cup of coffee after breakfast

Snack - handful of dried fruit and nuts

Lunch - green bean salad with red onion, black olives, cherry tomatoes, celery and tuna

Snack - 2 slices smoked honey turkey breast with a handful of green grapes and sunflower seeds

Cup of coffee after getting to my boyfriends house

Snack - handful of dried fruit and nuts

Dinner - whole wheat pasta, tomato sauce, ground turkey

Snack - soy milk chocolate pudding

Summary - it was pretty easy to stick to the Paleo diet while at my apartment. I had a refrigerator and pantry full of healthy food choices. My boyfriend lives with his adult son, so the bachelor's rarely have any food in the house that isn't in a can or a box. I made the pasta, which we ate for dinner, on Sunday night. I would like to drink less coffee, as I put way too much creamer/sweetener in my coffee, which adds too many empty calories to my diet. But I suffer from migraine headaches on occasion and my favorite headache pill contains caffeine, so I'm afraid if I cut out the coffee completely I will have MASSIVE headaches.

Tuesday, April 3rd; Weight - 147.5 Pounds

The smoothie I choose for today was a modified version of the Tropical Sun smoothie which is featured on page 81 of The Healthy Green Drink Diet book. I blended together 1 cup coconut milk, 1 bunch flat leaved parsley, 1 handful spinach, 1 peeled orange, 1 peeled banana and 1 cup of pineapple chunks. This recipe made 2 cups of a pretty sweet tasting green drink. I drank 1 cup before breakfast, and was going to drink the 2nd cup before lunch, but it tasted kind of funky to me when I tried the 2nd cup, so I ended up putting it down the garbage disposal.

Pre Breakfast - Tropical Sun smoothie

Breakfast - 2 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon, mushrooms, thyme and garlic

Cup of coffee after breakfast

Snack - sliced carrots, green grapes, 2 slices smoked honey turkey breast

Lunch - green bean salad with red onion, black olives, cherry tomatoes, celery and tuna

Snack - 2 chocolate peanut butter candies, 4 chocolate mint cookies

Dinner - fish sandwich, french fries, iced tea

Wednesday, April 4th; Weight - 147 Pounds

After eating junk yesterday afternoon and evening, I thought for sure my weight would be right back where I started. But I still managed to lose another half a pound. Going to try REALLY hard today to stick to eating healthy. Late afternoon I made Swedish meatballs and noodles at my apartment. I'll be taking that over to my boyfriends house for dinner tonight.

Pre Breakfast - grape pear smoothie

Breakfast - 2 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon and thyme, leftover scalloped potatoes

Cup of coffee after breakfast

Snack - apple cinnamon fruit & grain bar

Pre Lunch - grape pear smoothie

Lunch - Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, oven roasted asparagus

Snack - handful of dried fruit and nuts

Dinner - Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, oven roasted asparagus

Snack - peanut butter and jelly sandwich

Thursday, April 5th; Weight - 146.5 Pounds

Last night I felt really bloated and gassy. I think having two smoothies, instead of the usual two, was more than my stomach could handle. So today, I chose to skip the pre-breakfast smoothie, and have a slightly larger breakfast than normal.

I made a smoothie at around 10 AM, to have as a pre-lunch healthy green drink. I made up my own recipe to make a peach yogurt smoothie. I posted the recipe up to my Cuisine Diva blog.

Breakfast - 2 egg omelet with diced Canadian bacon and sauteed mushrooms, English muffin

Cup of coffee after breakfast

Pre Lunch - peach yogurt smoothie

Snack - apple cinnamon fruit & grain bar

Lunch - peach yogurt smoothie

Snack - handfull of dried fruit and nuts

Dinner - Swedish meatballs, egg noodles, oven roasted asparagus

Bike Diva's Opinion

I weighed myself first thing Friday morning, the scale said I was down to 146 poudns, so I managed to lose 2.5 pounds over 4 days, while consuming a heatlhy green drink first thing in the morning. I spent the 3 day Easter weekend at my boyfriends house and decided not to continue with the daily Green Diet Drink over the weekend. It's kind of hard cooking/making food at the bachelor pad, and we had a few social events planned over the weekend and didn't want to be bothered with trying to fit the green drink diet into our plans.

The added benefit of incorporating smoothies and/or homemade juices into your diet is that they are made from raw, unprocessed, uncooked food. You should also try and purchase organic ingredients for your green drinks, as many fruits and vegetables have high levels of pesticides and other chemicals.

Consuming a green drink, into your daily nutrition plan, is a great way to add healthy fruits and vegetables to your diet. It also makes a great start to a stricter diet plan for anyone looking to drop a few pounds of unwatned weight.

FOUR TIME WORLD CHAMPION TO PURSUE OTHER OPPORTUNITIES IN 2012

16th January 2012 – London, UK: Four time World Champion and World Ironman Distance Record Holder, Chrissie Wellington has announced that she’ll be taking a break from competing in Ironman during 2012 to explore other opportunities, including the forthcoming publication of her autobiography, A Life Without Limits.

Chrissie, who won her fourth World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, last October and maintained her unbeaten record at Ironman distance – making it 13 victories from 13 races – said of her decision, “I’ve given absolutely everything to Ironman over the past five years. However, this year I’ve decided to take a break as I would like to spend more time focusing on other pursuits including dedicating more time to my chosen charities, the publication of my book and more active promotion of the sport in the UK, as well as giving myself the chance to explore and seize new opportunities within triathlon and outside. I feel that I wouldn’t be able to pursue all of these different goals whilst simultaneously dedicating the energy and time needed to compete in Ironman events and treat them with the respect and complete dedication they deserve.

The past five years have been absolutely incredible and I am extremely happy, proud and content with everything that I have achieved in the sport – topping it all off with the race of my life in Kona last year. I have always seen triathlon as a part of my life, rather than the be all and end all, and am looking forward to a little more variety and balance by pursuing other interests, as well as spending more time with my family and friends.

I am really excited about what the future holds and being able to spend more time around the sport without the commitment of full time ironman training and racing”.
