With the price of gas at an all time high it makes since to explore other ways to go from point "A" to point "B". Many people are looking at motor scooters and motorcycles as an answer to this problem. Clete Siefker and Jon Peterson worked in the business end of the college. Clete Siefker was for many years the comptroller at the college and Jon Peterson worked with Clete as a senior accountant. Both of these men worked here starting in the 1970's when the College was smaller and the employees were a closer knit group. The term "College Familty" really meant something in those days. I hope you enjoy visiting with Clete and Jon as they discuss BCC As It Used To Be.

bobcast #37 BCC As It Used To Be Part 3

Click here to listen to the podcast.

If you can remember BCC looking like the picture on the left, you should have been retired long ago. Steve visited with me in the bobCast Studio to talk about old times and his teaching career at BCC. This is a great look at a guy who really made a difference in his student's lives. People of the past who are discussed are:
Dr. Will Holcombe, Dr. Steve Barker, Dr. Larry McFarland, Dr. Carl Crawford and others who helped to build the College that we know today. Broward Community College is one of the outstanding Community Colleges in the country and there have been many people to thank for making it so. Recently they came together to talk about their experiences as students and as employees of the college.

Bobcast #36 Dominique Charlotteaux

Dominique Charlotteaux is a Professor of Education on South Campus. One for Beginning podcasters and one for the Intermediate. Our last workshop had a full house and several people had to be asked to wait until next semester. If you missed the workshop or were not able to sign up, we are planning to offer all four of the workshops again next semester.

In September, I was able to attend the Podcast and New Media Expo held this year in Ontarino, California. Several people who have been successful in the New Media business (as podcasting is known in professional circles)were on hand and one of these was a young man was Hayden Black. What makes Hayden Back stand out is he is very good at what he does and he is a Broward Community College graduate who attended Central Campus in the late 1980's.
If you would like to check out Hayden's latest production you can do so at http://www.goodnightburbank.com .

One other high point of the conference was a young couple (Eric and Cat Susch ) who produce a kitting podcast called "Lets Knit 2 gather". While there are many podcasts about knitting, I was impressed with the professional level of their show. They even gave a workshop on producing a quality video podcast, and they were right on target. Not only do they shoot their own video but they write the script, rehearse and do their own scenery and lighting and Cat knits her own costumes. You don't have to take my word for it just check out the podcast at http://www.letsknit2gether.com .
The bobCast has also started a video section for all those videos that get made and need a place to be shown. The videos can be found in two places. The first of these is http://bccmovies.blogspot.com and by going to the second at http://www.thebobcast.com and click on the videos tab.

The bobCast has a new home on South Campus. It is a part of the South Campus Student Broadcast project funded last year by SPD. We are trying to introduce students to podcasting by training them to "broadcast their ideas to the world using podcast technology. So far we have produced several videos and a bi-weekly production of the college newspaper, The Observer called the "Ob-cast". Members of The Observer staff read and discusses the top stories and the feature editorials. The Obcast is produced about a week after the paper comes out every other Friday.

Itunes University known as itunesU will soon come on line here at BCC and as we stated in an eariler podcast this will give us an additional 500 giga-bytes of storage and a new platform from which to reach the world through podcasting.

Music for this podcast was furnished by blues artist Cheryl Arena. You can check her out and purchase her music from her website at http://www.cherylarena.com .

bobCast 31 the Opening Day Podcast

Every year Broward Community College in Ft. This year's event took place on the North Campus of Broward Community College on August 16, 2007, and provided those in attendance information about some of the projects that people at the college have developed to aid their colleagues in improving their experience whether in the classroom or the office setting. On March 17th we held our first training session for our new iLeaders. The iLeaders program provides the money and equipment for specific faculty members on each campus to act as podcasting gurus and work with faculty on that campus who might want to get started with podcasting or who might need help along the way.

North Campus– Marci Carabelli and Bobette Woselensky

Central Campus– Susan Finazzo, Steve Obenauf and Mary Diaz

South Campus– Dominique Charlotteaux and Abe Biggs

College-wide – Robert Buford you can reach me on South Campus at 8925 or by email at rbuford@broward.edu.

We plan on doing additional training this semester and by the end of the summer and the start of the new academic year in August these folks should be up and running and we will be shifting podcasting here at the college into high gear.

2. In April, I attended the A.D.C.L.I. which stands for Apple Digital Campus Leadership Institute. This was held at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, GA. This Institute centered on preparing ourselves as Faculty and educators to deal with the Digital Native student.

A. Students for whom cell phones are their chief form of communication or at least it seems that way. I was born into a world where only a few people had telephones. The world of “party lines” and operators who were real people and sometimes you knew their names.

B. Students who write few letters but hundreds of emails, and take their classes on line.

C. Students who many times prefer to “text message” someone as opposed to speaking with them personally.

D. Students who do not remember what the world was like before the personal computer.

E. Students who are the “Youtube”, “Facebook” and the “My Space” generation.

The members of the Institute talked about how they used Macintosh based technology and podcasting to provide instruction to their students and many of the faculty brought their students to the sessions and demonstrated the projects that they had completed. I saw a young female student who had done a video project that I was sure was a graduate project, and when I commented on what a good project this was for a graduate student, she informed me that she was only in her second year.

It is a different world and we must be ready or like Douglas Mc Arthur said about old soldiers, we might just “Fade Away”.

3. Dr. Patrick Ellingham and I wrote an SPD grant, which has been funded, to establish an experimental student radio station on South Campus using podcast technology to “broadcast” our students programs to the world. With older student radio stations the radio signal could only extend out about 10 miles or less. With podcast technology the podcast can be made available to the World. Anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can “receive” our radio shows. We hope to set that facility up over the summer and have it in operation in the Fall of 2007.

I would like to thank Dr. Ellingham for all the support and encouragement that he has given to the “Podcasting” efforts here at BCC. Thanks to Pat and the SPD committee we have a better podcasting program than many of the larger Universities not only in Florida but around the country. I also owe a big thank you Russ Adkins and the Instructional Technology Department who had the vision to make podcasting a part of the distance learning efforts of the College.

4. If things go as planned, BCC will become a part of iTunes-U in the near future. On May 23 Dr. David Armstrong the Chancellor of the Community College System for Florida will sign an agreement that will allow all of the Community Colleges to become part of Apple’s iTunes-U.

What is iTunes-U? It is apart of the Apple iTunes system that allows schools to have their own iTunes page on the iTunes system that Apple uses to market it’s audio and vedio products. This has several things going for it:

A. Our students already know know how to use the system. It is the same one that they use to download music and videos for their personal use.

B. It gives the College and Faculty their own iTunes page where their can post their podcasts either on a public or private basis. This would allow students easy access to their assignments and review materials.

B. And it gives the college an additional 500 gigabytes of storage in addition to our present terabyte of server space.

We will join the ranks of the big schools such as Stanford, UC Berkeley and many other schools across the nation.

As soon as the iTunes-U becomes a reality at the college I plan on making it the main topic for a podcast focusing just on iTunes-U and how to take advantage of oll the things it has to offer.

5. The bobCast has made it to the “Funny Papers” ! On April 30 “NON SEQUITUR” featured a cartoon of The bobCast. It showed a old guy named Bob sitting on his porch with a telescope and a sign that read “Ask me about the neighbors”. The caption read “Before there was podcasting there was bobCasting” and I though Adam Curry was the first podcastor.

A special thanks to Holly Gilly, Fred Searcy and Jerry Enloe for thinking enough of the bobCast to send the clipping to me in the mail.

THE FUTURE

We hope to start doing more video podcasting in the near future. We have some new equipment coming on board and hope to start working with people to produce podcasts that can not only be heard but seen as well. Video is such a powerful medium that we need to start producing as much of this as we can.

The Sciences and Nursing are two areas that jump right out but there are others as well.

I hope you enjoyed this podcast and hope to be back real soon.

Podcast #28 PDD at BCC

Click Here to Listen to the bobCast

Podcasting has become a part of the distance learning program at Broward Community College in FT. Lauderdale, Florida. On Friday the second of February David Shulman and I presented a workshop presentation at the College's Professional Development Day entitled "Becoming a Podcast Professional at BCC". Professional Development Day is a day of workshops and activities designed to help the staff and faculty of the college sharpen their skills and knowledge in many different areas. We were honored to be included in the line up. As a service to those who missed the presention by attending other activities or for those who just could not get enough of podcasting the first time around we have included the entire workshop as a bobCast podcast. This podcast runs almost an hour in length but it includes all of the workshop from beginning to end.
In the workshop we show you what a podcast is, and discuss how podcasting fits into the world of education and even take a quick look at commerical podcasting. We cover podcatching software programs such as Apple's iTunes and explain RSS technology and show how this technology can be used to deliver information by "pushing" the data to the student. And a bonus, we show several examples of how other faculty at the college are using the technology and creating their own podcasts for use in their classes.

Showcased are:

Michael Minassian Eye on literature Podcast which can be located at:
http://eyeonliterature.blogspot.com

Sharon Rifkin who's wellness podcast is located at:
http://rifkinsblog.blogspot.com

Fred Searcy who is using podcasting to teach his students lab safety for his biology classes at:
http://www.broward.edu/~fsearcy

If you missed the real thing on Professional Development Day, click on the link above and get caught up.

bobCast 27 M&M meets PDD

Click Here to access the bobCast 27

In this bobCast we speak with Professor Mary Diaz of the Mentor/Mentee Project and Professor Michael Minassian of the English Department on Central Campus. He shares one of my passions which is visiting the homes of famous (dead) writers. In my case, they can come from other walks of life. Mary explains the Mentor/Mentee project, and expands on the importance of the project to the Instructional Technology Department and the College as a whole.
I talk about the up coming podcast workshop and the day of workshops at the College which we cakll Professional Development Day.

This podcast can be accessed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/thebobcast

bobCast #26 The Steve Eliot Cast

The world famous Steve Eliot joins us today to bring us up to date on all the things he has been doing since his retirement 5 years ago. Steve is a special person in my life. He introduced me to the computer and the wonders of technology way back in 1983 right after I came to BCC as the technical director of the Theatre Department on Central Campus. Two of my sons took Steve for Art, while they were students here at the college, and he had them running all over South Florida looking for art. His classes were always the most creative and interesting my sons ever had, and they still talk about them today. Steve is a real teacher's teacher. When you were in Steve's class and the classtime was over, you hated to leave the room. Steve always marched to the sound of a different drum and sometimes the drum didn't even look like a drum at all. The slogan "Why be normal?" fits Steve's approach to life. He has traveled and created video with his trusted Macintosh computer which he was using long before most of the rest of us.
Anyway, click on this link to hear my interview with Steve. I hope you enjoy hearing it half as much as I did in recording it.

Link to bobCast 26 The Steve Eliot Cast

bobCast#25 The Christmas Cast - Teachers talk Tech

To Listen to The bobCast click here!

bobCast #25 The Christmas Cast – Teachers Talk Tech

This is the Christmas Cast for December 19th 2006

In this bobCast we will be talking about some of the new MP3 players on the market and talking about the the different Apple iPods and the Archos 504 and 604 models.

And we take a look forward to the new semester where we will be launching our new podcast training for the new iteam associates for podcasting here at BCC.

And we give you the new schedule for professional development training for the spring semester.

There will be two Professioanl Development Workshops for the Spring Semester. They are Feb. 01,2005 and Feb. 20, 2006. Each of these workshops will last from 1:30pm to 3:30pm and the room(s) and building information will be posted as soon as I know.

In this podcast we will cover:

A Steve Elliot sighting

Discuss and review several MP3 players.

Elvis even drops by for a Christmas song.

The bobCast wishes everyone and very Merry Christmas and joyous holiday season.

Visit our websites at:

http://www.thebobcast.com or http://thebobcast.blogspot.com

the Feedburner address is http://feeds.feedburner.com/thebobcast

bobCast #24 The Kyra Cast - Teachers Talk About Teaching

bobCast #24 The Kyra Cast
Click The above link to go to The bobCast.

In this bobcast we meet and talk with Dr. Kyra Belan of the BCC South Campus Art Program. And lastly the sheer excitement of the new podcast industry and the impact that it is making on the world of mass communications, and how it offers freedom to people to express themselves in business and in the classroom. This is a great mobile technology both from the listener and the producer as well.
VI. The workshop was held on Central Campus in Building 9 room 102. The workshop covered Podcatching or how to go about finding and subscribing to Podcasts. We talked about and showed how to use podcatching software iTunes being the most outstanding of the applications.

The recording made during the workshop can be downloaded at:

http://www.broward.edu/~rbuford/podcasts/workshops

ThePowerPoint presentation can be down loaded from the same page and viewed while listening to podcast recording.

Apple in the Technology News:

Over view of the changes in the iPod and iTunes

BCC uses mostly Windows based machines. Windows is the main computer supported by the college as it is in most of Corporate America. The network used by the college supports the Windows platform even though the email software that we run on these windows machines is not the Microsoft Product which is Outlook but is GroupWise. GroupWise is a Novell Product. A lot of people think that the PC, which stands for Personal Computer (a term in the early days (less than 30 years ago) that allow one to separate it from real computers which at the time was mainframes and minicomputers) is the only real computer. The Apple computer falls into the other category. This is ironic since the Apple personal computer predated the IBM PC by several years. And of course it was not the first personal computer, but it was the first to give the Personal Computer a real role in the computer business.

This passed Tuesday September 12th Apple introduced several new additions to the world of Media. The world of media is a world in which Apple is a major player if not the industry leader.
New iPods
80 Gig Video iPod
New iPod Nano
New iTunes 7
Interface
Supports video better 640x480 resolution
Code named iTV
Will allow the wireless interface for video on your computer to be viewed on the big Screen TV in the den. This could be good news for the video podcast effort since you can watch Professor Searcys biology videos on the BIG Screen. It will be more comfortable than watching on your computer at a desk.

Interview with Pat Ellingham

Pat Ellingham who is at professor of English on BCC South Campus and the Faculty Advisor for the college's magazine publication talks to us about the use of Apple Macintosh computers in the publication of the Schools Magazine Pan Ku and his thoughts about using technology to teach.

Up coming Podcast Expo Sept 29 & 30 in Ontario, CA

Second Annual Podcast Expo
Some of the biggest names in the world of podcasting will be in attendance. Leo Laporte and the TWITs will be doing a live podcast from the floor of the showroom, and several other podcasters will be doing the same. The bobCast will be broadcasting from the hotel room and I am hoping to make this a special podcast production.

Closing Music selection
Mike Chappelears recording entitled Endings. These songs are not that expensive, and most of the money that you pay (if not all) goes to the artist and not some large music company.

bobCast #19 A Mid-Summer Night's bobCast

To listen to the bobcast click here!

In this bobCast, I talk about setting up of two roundtable podcasts, and introduce the newest podcast in town known as the "ToddCast".
The ToddCast
This podcast is produced and presented by Dr. Todd Westerfeld of the Student Affairs Department on Broward Community College's South Campus. Todd covers events that come under area of Students Affairs which includes some of the workshops to help improve student performance. The ToddCast can be accessed at http:www.broward.edu/~twesterf/podcasts . Check out this podcast and drop us an email and let us know what you think of the new show or even the old show for that matter. You can reach me at rbuford@broward.edu and Todd at twestf@broward.edu .
Roundtable Discussions
The Broward County Library approached me a few weeks back about creating a podcast on a couple of events they were having at the South Campus. The first of these was Roundtable discussion on Terrorism and the second was Roundtable on Fatherhood in different cultures. The first event was to be held in the "Mass-media Room" of the Library and the second was to be held in what we refer to as the "South Campus Theater" also known as the Teaching Auditorium by some of the old timers at the campus.
I learned several things about location recording from working on these programs. One was do not assume that your recording equipment will interface with the house systems without a good deal of trial and error, and one has to check out the scene and the equipment in person to make sure that things will go as planned. You might think that any old idiot would know such things, but I soon discovered that I was somehow a special type of idiot when I found myself running around trying to get things to work at the last minute.
At any rate, things did work out and the events were posted to the web at there own website. You can link to the podcasts at http:www.broward.edu/~rbuford/podcasts/roundtables . This was the first podcast to be posted to our new podcast webserver which was funded by a grant from SPD this past year. I would like to thank the folks in the Information Technology Department for their help and support in getting us up and running. We will be gearing up for several workshops this next year on how to create your own audio podcast and/or video podcast and upload it to the new server.
Music Featured On This Podcast
The music on this podcast was by a group know as 20-2-12 and featured a very talented young lady named Nina Black. You can checkout more of Nina's music at her website http://www.ninablackmusic.com/. Nina not only sings but writes music as well. We are very glad to have her talents on our podcast.
Next bobCast
Our next bobCast will be on opening day at the Omni on North Campus on August 17,2006. Be sure to drop by the Podcast Group Table and be a part of the next bobCast.
