1. There’s an episode missing in English! =) Back in April, I did a COVID-19 special episode in French in which I presented… 19 songs! It was a great episode entirely made up from new material I had never presented before on the show. Things got in the way and I never got to record it in English. So, I owe you an episode!!!!
2. In that COVID-19 episode, I talked about the idea of dedicating special episodes to shanty festivals who had to cancel this year because of the pandemic. I’ll explain it on the “lost” episode of point 1, but that’s something I should be doing this fall.
3. On the 28th of August, 2020, we’ll be presenting an online Sea Shanty Festival with groups from different countries (France, England, Poland, Canada, USA). It will be streamed live from 6pm to midnight (Europe time) and from 12pm to 6pm (North America ET) on different platforms, such as Facebook and Youtube. The event is a collaboration between Bordel De Mer and the French group Les Marins des Légendes. I’ll tell you more about it in the next episode.

With summer on its way and lots of festivals coming up, I need your help to put up a calendar of upcoming events  from all over the world presenting sea shanties and sea songs.

It’s a thing I was thinking about for quite some time now and I’ve put up a modest calendar on the website, but only with events that I found myself. If you know about other events, please let me know. I hope eventually to get it to a level that it could be done as a standalone app… But that’s in the long run… =)

And speaking of festivals, I’ll have the chance this year to travel twice to Europe to sing with my band Brise-Glace. I’ll be at the Paimpol Festival (Britany, France) between the 2nd and 4th of August and at Harwich (England) between the 11th and 13th of October. I’ll bring cameras and mics with me to hopefully make interviews. Can’t wait to meet you there!

How are you all doing? =) It’s been a while, hasn’t it? In 2018, I worked a lot on my other podcast called “104 histoires de Nouvelle-France” in the hopes of finding a way to earn a living out of it and, at the same time, financing The Bordel de Mer.

But it didn’t work. And it’s now time to get back to more serious things, including producing podcasts just for the pleasure of telling stories and sharing music.

The CDs I took today’s songs from, all but one, have been given to me by groups I met at the St-Jean-Port-Joli festival (here in Quebec) or at the Bie Daip festival in Holland last August.

I also take the time to pay hommage to one of the first voices I heard singing sea shanties, Pierre Amice (from the group “Les Boucaniers”) who passed away this week.

His voice was unique. Not only could he sing better than most of us, but he could also recite poem the way it was meant to be recited, bringing out the colors and musicality of the words.

This is why I chose a poem he recited on a Boucaniers’s CD, “Love pour Lof”. The poem is called “La fin” and it was written in the 19th century by Tristan Corbière (if ever I could find an english translation of the poem, I’ll put it here).

Welcome to the 7th season of The Bordel de Mer, the sea shanties podcast!

For the first episode of this 7th season (the 12th in French), I wanted to try something new: recording the show in video!

It was something I wanted to try for a while and I wanted to see how much time it would take me compared with doing it only in audio.

The idea was to explore new ways to get sea shanties and sea songs more available to the general public. Doing an episode in video seemed to me like a natural step from what I’ve been doing for the last 12 years.

I was surprised to realize that doing it in video didn’t take that much more time than doing it in audio only. So, while I can’t promise to do every show in both audio and video, I know that I’ll be doing some more in the future.

The audio episodes will always be available for you to download them and listen to them wherever and whenever you want.

I didn’t get the time in 2017 to repair the problem which led to the show not being available on iTunes, but I’ll get to it in the next few weeks.

On the menu this week, 12 maritimes songs and sea shanties from Poland, France, Holland, United-States and Canada.

And I’ll be showcasing a new English-Canadian band and a new French-Canadian artist I met this summer at the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli festival. They both may be Canadian, but as you’ll hear, they’re quite different from one another!

But before we get to the music, I would like to make an small personal announcement for all listeners who can understand French.

If you’ve been listening to The Bordel de Mer since the beginning, you probably remember that 6 years ago, I was also producing another podcast called « 104 histoires de Nouvelle-France » (104 stories from New-France). In that podcast, I present stories and unknown people from the time of the French colony in North America. It’s a podcast I neglected for many years now, but I’m proud to say that I posted a new episode last week and I’ve already recorded a new episode that I’ll put online before the end of October.

After an episode in which I was presenting traditional songs, I’m back with a more “traditional” show i.e. presenting a minimum of 35 minutes of sea songs and music.

I love preparing shows with a theme in it.

Here are 4 ideas I would like to do in the future. Some of them would ask me a lot of time and research, but others might be easier to do than I think. So, there is a good chance I might do them before the year is over!

1- Women in songs

I often told you how I love listening to sea shanties sung by women. The give a rich color to the melodies that men simply just can’t do. Especially since many of those songs were never meant to be sung by women. But I’m talking about much more: I would like to present songs that were sung by women while they were working. And why not also play contemporary songs written by women about the sea.

2- Tragedies

That would maybe be one of the darkest episodes, but one that I’ve been thinking about for many years. Many maritime songs tell stories of great maritime tragedies. As a story teller, I like them a lot. They help us to remember the people who lost their lives on those occasions.

3- Live shows

Through the years, I’ve received many live recording. It would be fun to put a certain number of live recordings of songs together and present them like if it was an online sea shanties festival.

4- Songs found in different traditions

When I first got interested in Sea Shanties, I was surprised to find out that some songs I thought were from Quebec, were, in fact, from France. A song like “Au 31 du mois d’Août” was written in France, has travelled to North America and now has a life of its own, here. So it would be great to hear  different versions of the same song, depending on the country where they are sung.

So, these are some of the ideas I have.

Sunday morning, just as I was leaving home to record a new episode of The Bordel de Mer, I learned the sad news of the passing of our good and dear friend Hervé Guillemer. He wrote many of the most beautiful sea related songs in French. And he was one of the first artists to believe in the show.

Still in shock from the news, I turned around and chose 9 new songs to record an entire episode dedicated to the works of Hervé Guillemer.

One word kept coming to my mind as I was preparing the show : friendship.

And to celebrate those friendships that he built throughout his life, I chose 7 songs of his, sung by other artists.

The other 2 songs (the first and the last) are sung by him and talk about… friendship. Their titles are nearly the same: one is called “Sailors Friendship” and the other could be translated as “Oceanic Frienships”.

I often say about his songs that if you needed one good reason to learn French, it would be to read his lyrics.

I recorded this episode on Sunday with great emotion. I hope you like it.

This week, I got the chance to get to Newport (Rhode Island, USA), to sing for the arrival of the replica of the French ship L’Hermione. And it’s with the heart still filled with emotions that I’m recording this week’s episode.

Because it’s while working on such a ship, 20 years ago, that I fell in love with the sea and maritime history. Every day I would come to work, I knew that I was living something special. And although the ship wasn’t finished and couldn’t sail on it’s own, it still had beautiful rigging and this is where I got the chance to learn how to work on historical rigging.

I didn’t know about sea shanties at that time. I learned about shanties some years later, when I went to the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli festival, around 2002. I knew that I couldn’t become a sailor because I already had the greatest job ever of being a father, but with sea shanties, I got the chance of keeping in touch with the sea and the great experiences I lived on the ships I worked on.

I could go on for hours, but I will simply finish by thanking everyone who helped bringing the ship L’Hermione to life!

It seems like it’s been a will since I’ve presented some sea shanties… Thanks for your patience!

First things first: I wish you a very happy new year 2015!

I know that the year started very sadly. But it’s in moments like these that I really think we should never forget to allow ourselves good times to remember that life is also full of happy times and even real happiness.

This week, on top of the 9 sea shanties or sea songs that I usually play, I’ve chosen 3 more songs to mark 3 events that happened since the last show.

1. First of all, a Canadian crew has finally found a ship that belonged to Lord Franklin’s expedition to find the Northwest Passage, in the 19th century. So, I’ve chosen (of course) the great song composed by Stan Rogers, Northwest Passage, sung by Bounding Main. You can read more about this great event by following this link to the Parks Canada website.
2. The Hermione project has made another step forward to its grand voyage from France to the United States next spring. The Hermione is a replica of the ship on which LaFayette sailed from France to the young United States in 1780. The ship recently left the harbour to do some tests on the sea. To celebrate this great step, I’ve chosen a song sung by Choeur marine. Many members of this group have played a role in the project. For their work, I’ll be playing “La chanson du départ”.
3. On the first weekend of September, I had the privilege to host a jousting tournament. We had jousters from United-Kingdom, France, US, New-Zealand and Canada. I had the great pleasure of meeting Radar Goddard, a jouster from Alberta (Canada). Last week, I was at Saint-Jean-Port-Joli for the 16th annual Sea Shanties Festival (Fête des chants de marins). The artists have given me many great CDs that I’ll be sharing with you in the next few weeks.

This week’s episode was inspired by conversations that I’ve had during the week-end about the diversity of styles that we can find in the beautiful world of Sea Shanties and Sea Songs.

The songs I’ve chosen for this episode all have this particular quality of being very different in styles from one another. Of course, I could have chosen many more, but I think that everyone should be able to recognize himself – or herself – in one style at least! =)

Are you ready for new sea shanties and sea songs? =) Of course, you are!

I’m finally back after nearly 3 months involuntary absence! A too long absence, but during that time I’ve had the chance to finished a new website for The Bordel de Mer and to come up with a new project of an Internet store centered on sea shanties, sea songs and maritime tradition.

I called this store “Le Shanty Shop Bordel de Mer”.

The goal of this store is to create a list of all the CDs, books, videos and DVDs about sea shanties, sea songs and maritime tradition sold on iTunes and Amazon. Both of them offer “affiliate links” or “associate links”. That means that if you buy a product on iTunes or Amazon after clicking on a link on the Shanty Shop, Bordel de Mer will get a commission.

That way, you’ll be able to:

1. Buy great sea music from all over the world
2. Help the artists by buying their CDs, books and/or DVDs
3. Help Bordel de Mer

At the moment, I’ve already placed in the Shanty Shop:

• 610 songs

My hope is that this new store will help you discover great talent and help the artists by selling CDs and songs!
