Sheed Good Fit For Celtics?

2009-07-07T12:12:00.000-07:00

The Celtics will be better this season.

That’s now Guaransheed.

With the signature of forward Rasheed Wallace to a two-year contract for the mid-level exception, the Celtics will add a veteran and winner (see: Pistons, Detroit) to their bench.

I repeat: to their BENCH.

Plenty of teams this summer were looking to add Wallace as a starter.

There are many in basketball circles who also believe they’ve added a giant headache, too.

My guess is it’s not as painful as the one now felt in Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio – three top tier teams that were counting on a “Yes” from Sheed. That the Cavs, Magic, and Spurs were all interested in the services of Wallace tells you what the majority of the league still thinks of the guy.

Rasheed Wallace can still play, folks.

But can he play by the Celtics’ team-first rules?...

The Redheaded Utility Man

A Daily Babble Production

Last night's second round opener between the Magic and Celtics featured a lot that didn't make me happy. But in addition to leaving Applebee's (the only restaurant around here with tabletop audio) peeved about a 95-90 loss and the host of reasons it happened, I walked away thrilled yet again with the play of one Brian Scalabrine.

It's hard to believe that a year ago, this guy's best asset appeared to be his knack for the wildly entertaining celebratory press conference after earning a DNP-CD. It's nearly as hard to believe that three weeks ago, he continued to suffer the effects of post-concussion syndrome. Yet Scal gave the Celtics his third consecutive big effort off the bench last night, and this one was the best of the bunch.

The beginning of the Celtics' run to turn a 28-point rout back into a basketball game coincided with Scalabrine's arrival on the floor with eight and a half minutes to play in the third quarter. This was not accidental. After he had trouble defending Rashard Lewis in the first half, Scalabrine was assigned to guard Hedo Turkoglu for much of his second half stint. He responded by doing the best job playing defense with his feet that I can remember from him.

When the Magic began featuring Turkoglu as the point forward (and thus primary ball-handler), Scalabrine picked him up before halfcourt and ragged him all the way up the floor. He stayed low in his defensive stance and slid his feet exactly the way coaches teach their players at every level of this game across the globe. Defying his quickness deficiencies, Scal kept Turkoglu in front of him but managed to stay close enough to prevent him from using his hallmark jab-step-and-back move to create space on the perimeter. The Magic forward made exactly one field-goal over the game's final 20 minutes and just four trips to the line (he only converted one of those free throws). The redhead deserves plenty of credit for that as well as for doing a better job on Lewis the second time around.

NBA Dynasty Series - Boston Celtics - The Complete History

Over the past 50 years the Celtics have won an unprecedented 16 World Championships including 8 in a row from 1959-1966, making them the the most storied franchise in NBA history. This 5-disc special edition collector's set features the complete Boston Celtics history including year-end compilation programs highlighting the Championship seasons. Plus for the first time ever on DVD, the team's most memorable games in franchise history.

Boston Celtics: The Complete History recounts the glory days of the Celtics, and few have ever been more glorious. The franchise's Hall of Fame players and still-record 16 championships are revisited in a five double-sided-DVD combination of new and old documentaries and actual game footage.

The main documentary, The Celtics Dynasty (47 min.) tracks the team from the '50s through the '80s, and shorter vintage featurettes from the '70s and '80s (about 130 min. total) focus on the 1974 playoffs, the classic 1976 game against the Phoenix Suns that's often called the greatest NBA game ever, the renewed rivalry with the Lakers, and the 1986-87 team. Two NBA highlight films (55 min. each) summarizing the 1984 and 1986 seasons are less Celtic-centric but provide some memorable moments such as Ralph Sampson's miracle shot to beat the Lakers.

A postscript needs less than three minutes to discuss the highlights of the franchise since its last championship (1986) through 2004, from Reggie Lewis to Paul Pierce. (Interestingly, neither it nor the 1986-87 summary mentions the tragic death of Len Bias, who was the best hope to carry on the winning tradition from the Big Three.)

But that's all a prelude to the six complete games (plus one quarter) included in the set. It's a rare chance to see all-time great players such as Bill Russell, the Bird-Parish-McHale front line, and even a pre-TV-personality Bill Walton grabbing a key offensive rebound to remind everyone of the player he was before the injuries. It includes the aforementioned Phoenix Suns game, two games against the Magic-Kareem Lakers in 1984, a game against Houston's Twin Towers by the 1986 team that some call the best ever, and a 1987 game against Detroit that didn't lead to a championship but allowed Bird to create his own John Havlicek-esque moment. Light up the victory cigar for the Boston Celtics on DVD! --David Horiuchi

Perk's Offense Improving

2008-12-04T16:35:00.000-08:00

One undersold story of the year thus far has been the gradual but consistently improving offensive game for Kendrick Perkins. My first thought was that he must have put in some extra work with Clifford Ray.

However, this article reminds us that he didn't have much of a summer to work on anything.

Paul Pierce: We are going to do it again

2008-09-17T15:51:00.000-07:00

Paul Pierce of the NBA champion Boston Celtics, surprised some lucky high school student-athletes at a Modell's Sporting Goods store in Cambridge.

The lucky students got to see the 2008 championship trophy and got a Celtics shopping spree. Pierce says that he enjoys being a role model for young kids, and says he feels he isn't doing job until he puts a smile on their face.

As for Pierce, he has been smiling since the Finals, and says he'll keep smiling until someone knocks them off. He says that his knee is healthy, and is getting ready for training camp which just two weeks away.

Celtics Will Raise Banner #17 On October 28th

2008-09-03T13:56:00.000-07:00

The Celtics should get off to their most spirited start in 21 years when they open the 2008-09 season against the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday, Oct. 28, at home. NBA commissioner David Stern will present championship rings at pregame ceremonies for the 7:30 game, a highlight video will be shown, and the first championship banner earned at TD Banknorth Garden will be raised. There is something about hoisting a plain, green-and-white cloth to the rafters that trumps even high-tech electronic prompting for raising the excitement level of fans.

"I don't really remember much about it," general manager Danny Ainge said about the Celtics' 16th banner raising in 1986. "But I do remember the banner going up more than the ring ceremony or anything else. "As a player, you just want to play. You want the ring and you know it's a special time, but there is also a game to play. It's a fun time. But you spend days and weeks preparing for the game and you don't prepare for a ceremony.

Enjoy,

Thank You Ray Allen

2008-07-26T08:37:00.000-07:00

The Herald ran a story on Ray Allen at a recent golf tourney.

“Now is the time where you get to enjoy the success that we’ve had, that when you’re playing you can’t enjoy, because each day is a grind to get to the next day. Here, I can just sit back and revel in it,” said Allen, who averaged 17.4 points per game for the Celtics in 2007-08. “This is probably the biggest crowd I’ve been in front of since Game 6, and to be here and play golf, you get a sense of the enormity of that situation, being able to play on that grand stage and see how many people watched from all over America.”

Revel in it Ray, revel all you can. You've had a long career where you've been nothing but a model citizen, superstar player, and all around great guy (not to mention a movie star). The only thing missing in that fairytale life was an NBA Championship, and because you were able to put what little ego you had aside and accept a role as third fiddle on this team, you were rewarded with the ultimate basketball prize.

Thank You Paul Pierce

2008-06-23T13:20:00.000-07:00

He is not a tidy superstar. You cannot neatly wrap the career of Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce, the newly minted NBA Finals Most Valuable Player and first-time champion, in a perfectly symmetrical box with a corresponding matching ribbon.

His path to greatness has been far too gnarly for that.

"You're right," he said, still gleefully gripping his championship hat in the wee hours Wednesday morning. "Life has so many hurdles. Some of them I've hopped over, and some of them I've tripped over. The key is to get back up and finish the race."

Paul said it perfectly here. This is, in a nutshell, who he is. He's been knocked down so many times. He's tripped and fell so many times. He's been bruised, battered, and (literally) stabbed many times. Every time he pushed himself back up. He stood up, stared back at the world, and spat back, "Is that the best you've got? Bring it!"

This was such a great article I had to share it with everyone.

It's hard to put into word my feelings this morning so I'll just say this "incredible" or maybe unbelievable, possibly "fantastic", but the best words of all are "Thank You".

Thank You to:

All our loyal fans
To the players who "believed"
To Red Auerbach
Doc Rivers who built the "Belief System"
Danny Ainge a true Celtic through and through
The original "Big 3" and everyone who has ever put on a Celtics uniform, this one's for you too.

Game 5

2008-06-17T16:51:00.000-07:00

There was reason to hope after game 4 that the Lakers would be broken mentally and not be able to come back and win any more games. They dispelled that notion with a strong game 5, forcing the series back to Boston.

The Celtics didn't "choke" this one away. They had an opportunity to win, sure. There were some bounces and calls that didn't go our way. But the Lakers flat out won the game. Hats off to them. There's a reason why they won the West. They are a good team.

The thing is, the Celtics are still the better team.

Celtics in 6!

Home Sweet Home Court

2008-06-17T16:43:00.000-07:00

It would have been just fine with me to win the title in Los Angeles. Losing game 5 was a bad thing, no matter how you spin it. However, out of that disappointment, comes a gift. The Celtics will (most likely) celebrate their 17th Championship on their home court, in front of Boston fans and under the previous 16 banners.

Make no mistake about it. The Celtics fought hard for the chance to have a home court advantage throughout the playoffs for a moment just like this. And believe me, it is an advantage. Let this stat sink in for a moment: The Celtics have lost 7 games at home, ...all year! Regular season (35-6) and playoffs (12-1) combined.

Who can say why home court is so much better? It is the age old question. Is it the comfort sleeping in your own bed? Is it the home cooking? Is it the emotion and energy of the home crowd? Given the questions surrounding the league's officials, you have to wonder if the supposed home-court bias of the refs plays a role. I suppose it is a little bit of all that. Still, you have to admire the fact that this team in particular seems to feed off of being at home.

We Believe!!!

2008-06-12T21:09:00.000-07:00

Another chapter in the Celtic lore written, drama ,intrigue, suspense it had it all, truly a bestseller, I'm so emotional right now I can barely type, what a game.

It's 11:11 CST and I have to be up at 4:30 am, but I don't care, I'm reveling in being a Celtic, everyone who has ever put on a Celtics uniform was made proud tonight.
You know it's a good game when one of your largest leads is the final score.
Doc Rivers asked the players during one of the timeouts, do you believe, do you believe?
Well my friends, believe it or not we are up 3-1 on the Lakers and like Paul Pierce said, "just one more baby, just one more"!!!

Beat LA!

C's Aim to Put LA On Their Heels

2008-06-12T10:30:00.001-07:00

Following a day of rest, reflection, and preparation, the NBA Finals is back in action tonight for Game 4 at the Staples Center.

The outcome of Game 3 was not of much appeal to the Celtics or their fans, as they dropped a winnable game on the road, 87-81. Boston went away from their attack mindset that they displayed through the first two games of the series, and reverted to settling from the perimeter. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce were the catalysts for this deficiency, as the two stars combined for 8-35 shooting from the field. The Lakers, on the other hand, forced the issue and made it a point to come out and be the aggressors. As a result, they attacked the basket, got to the free throw line, and made the big plays necessary to put the game away.

With all of that said, the Celtics still hold a 2-1 series advantage and have two chances to get at least one victory at the Staples Center. Will the green get it done tonight in Game 4 and put themselves up 3-1, or will the Lakers even this thing up at 2-2 before yet another pivotal Game 5? Stay tuned.

BEAT LA!

Is That The Best You’ve Got?

2008-06-11T12:25:00.000-07:00

If so, the Celtics will win in 5. Make no mistake about it; this was an elimination game for the Lakers. You don't come back from 0-3, ever. The Celtics wanted to win this game, but the Lakers absolutely had to. Yet the Celtics still had the opportunity to steal it from them.

It would have been stealing too, because the Celtics simply didn't have the offensive firepower to win the game in legitimate fashion. Ray Allen was a man on an island, wondering when the other 2 amigos were going to come paddling up and save him. They never did.

You can blame the foul trouble for Paul's shooting woes. Perhaps the lack of playing time didn't let him find his rhythm. Or you could blame jetlag for just about anyone's poor performance. But the bottom line is that Pierce just didn't have it last night, and that's ok. He gets a free pass for all the hero work he's done to get us this far. He's proven that he can score against this Laker team and he'll be back for games 4 and 5.

You can complain all night about Kevin Garnett's reluctance to take the ball to the hoop with regularity (I know I do). But that's really not his game and he didn't even have much success down low when he did try. Give credit to the Laker defense for forcing him outside. He still chipped in with a modest double-double and maintained his focus defensively. Like Pierce, he'll show up for games 4 and 5. I have no doubt.

Wow, Celtics get it done lead 2-0!

2008-06-09T13:06:00.000-07:00

Leon Powe,is rich in skills! Sunday nights play shows what happens when you're not dependant on one or two people and you play team ball. Powe's 21 points in 15 mins, key plays, getting to the foul line because of smart aggressive play, and overall determination epitomized the Celtic spirit. The star players are going to do their thing most nights but its the players coming off the bench that play a significant role in a teams success.
We are very thankful for guys who want to be Celtics and play the Celtic way.
Congrats fellas, see ya Tuesday in LA.

Until next time,
