How To Phase Out Those Muppets in Your Life

We all have those people that really grind our gears for one reason or the other.

Whether it’s your obnoxious “friend,” a stage-5 clinger, or that slimy (yet persistent) referral trying to execute some dodgy business… let’s call it what it is – You’ve gotta find a way to phase out this muppet!

The art of the “phase out” refers to the Initiator’s (aka: you, the cool person’s) progressive attempts to bow-out of verbal/digital/physical contact with the aforementioned muppet until all realms of communication with said muppet cease to exist.

Now, I realize that the image to the left depicts more of a service situation between a waiter and the embodiment of Abe Froman, The Sausage King of Chicago - rather than a peer-to-peer phase out, but it’s more the idea of the “talk to the hand” gesture that sold me.

“Talk to the hand” is really the definition of phasing someone out; it involves saying “thank you but no thank you” and, as noted before – a whole-hearted commitment to progressively rejecting, declining and eventually completely ignoring the muppet who has annoyed the h-e-double-hockey-sticks out of you.

Please be advised that phasing someone out is not to be taken lightly by you, the initiator. As you can imagine, being the phased out muppet is be pretty insulting. So, you must make peace with the fact that this phased out muppet will never speak to you again, but most definitely will be speaking to others about how much of ass YOU are. I know, it’s unfortunate.

I can’t say that I’ve ever really been phased out – that I’ve actively noticed. BUT, I can confirm that I’ve initiated a few phase outs over the course of my involvement with the human species… And, let me tell you – I’ve never once regretted phasing someone out.
