Chip shows off his shiny new iPad and a few of its accessories.

Since this as well as his original statement that games are not art were made recently, the internet has exploded in frenzy, more specifically many game journalists as well as developers are offended and disagree with his statement.

Pixar films, viewed by some as the greatest animated films of recent times, can however be viewed as high art. What differentiates them from video games? Both are modeled, rigged, and animated in a 3D program. Both enlist voice actors. Both provide entertainment for an audience. The main difference, is one is interactive. Does this interaction between a player and the game declassify games as high art?

Ebert says as I understand it and thats the key problem. He doesnt understand it. The video game industry is young in comparison to movies and other forms of literature, and his age and lack of participation with the game industry limits his knowledge of it. He shouldnt be called out for being wrong, but rather for being uninformed. People trust his opinion on movies because thats his occupation, he knows the film industry inside and out, and therefore can make a valid claim towards a film he sees, however he cannot do the same for video games.

Furthermore, his statements could pose a threat to the video game industry. Roger Ebert is a name that would be easily recognized by anyone familiar with films or criticism. As a result, many trust and value his opinion. If he makes an outlandish claim about video games, people, whom are also uninformed about games, will take his thoughts as law. Now while the game industry is expanding to the casual market, there is still a huge number of people that do not play games. With negative thoughts inspired by Ebert, it will build up unneeded poor press around the gaming world. With unfair claims about Mass Effect and Grand Theft Auto by Cooper Lawrence and Jack Thomson, respectively, the majority of the world may already have negative opinions about this culture. Much how Geoff Keighley went on FOX News to argue the Mass Effect pornography, a reputable person from the gaming community needs to step up and defend our art in a discussion with Ebert, but since meeting him in person is probably difficult, Im glad to see journalists taking the mature approach and crafting well written articles explaining their opinions of how he is incorrect. While I wont urge you to write your senator on this subject, do share your opinion and hopefully as a group, we can prove that games are high art. Like I said, hes not wrong, just uninformed.
