At The Business Professor, LLC, we specialize in helping businesses develop and implement accounting and finance systems that match their unique needs and growth stage.</p>
<p data-start="565" data-end="750" class="">This Q&amp;A article explains how our services support companies in creating reliable financial systems, meeting tax and regulatory obligations, and planning complex financial transactions.</p>

<h3 data-start="757" data-end="849" class=""><strong data-start="761" data-end="849">Q: What do you mean by “developing and implementing accounting and finance systems”?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="851" data-end="1003" class="">It means designing the processes, tools, and reporting structures that allow a company to manage its finances accurately and efficiently. This includes:</p>

<p data-start="1482" data-end="1642" class="">Generic tools may work for basic record-keeping, but they often fall short when businesses grow or face complex financial situations. A custom solution ensures:</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p data-start="312" data-end="732" class="">At The Business Professor, LLC, we guide entrepreneurs, business owners, and executive teams through one of the most pivotal aspects of building a successful enterprise—structuring your business entity and designing an internal organization that supports long-term goals. Whether you&#8217;re just starting out or preparing for major strategic changes, our consulting services help align your business structure with your vision.</p>
<p data-start="734" data-end="854" class="">Below is a comprehensive Q&amp;A that addresses the what, why, and how of our entity structuring and restructuring services.</p>
<hr data-start="856" data-end="859" class="" />
<h3 data-start="861" data-end="922" class=""><strong data-start="865" data-end="922">Q: What does “structuring your business entity” mean?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="924" data-end="1328" class="">Structuring your business entity refers to the process of selecting and forming the appropriate legal structure for your business. This could include forming a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), or corporation (C-Corp or S-Corp), among others. The structure you choose affects everything from taxation and liability to decision-making authority and ownership distribution.</p>
<hr data-start="1330" data-end="1333" class="" />
<h3 data-start="1335" data-end="1401" class=""><strong data-start="1339" data-end="1401">Q: Why is choosing the right business structure important?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="1403" data-end="1507" class="">The right structure provides the legal, financial, and operational foundation for your business. It can:</p>
<ul data-start="1509" data-end="1683">
<li data-start="1509" data-end="1549" class="">
<p data-start="1511" data-end="1549" class="">Protect owners from personal liability</p>

<p data-start="1552" data-end="1578" class="">Optimize your tax position</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1579" data-end="1610" class="">
<p data-start="1581" data-end="1610" class="">Improve fundraising potential</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1611" data-end="1637" class="">
<p data-start="1613" data-end="1637" class="">Clarify management roles</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1638" data-end="1683" class="">
<p data-start="1640" data-end="1683" class="">Enable future growth or sale of the company</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="1685" data-end="1845" class="">At The Business Professor, we assess your business goals and circumstances to help you choose the most advantageous structure for your current and future needs.</p>
<hr data-start="1847" data-end="1850" class="" />
<h3 data-start="1852" data-end="1908" class=""><strong data-start="1856" data-end="1908">Q: What does organizational structuring involve?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="1910" data-end="2016" class="">Organizational structuring involves designing how your business operates internally. It includes defining:</p>
<ul data-start="2018" data-end="2158">
<li data-start="2018" data-end="2040" class="">
<p data-start="2020" data-end="2040" class="">Management hierarchy</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h1 data-start="69" data-end="136" class="">Do People Really Want Education? Why Curiosity Alone Isn&#8217;t Enough</h1>
<p data-start="138" data-end="403" class="">We often hear that education is the key to success. But here’s a tough question: <strong data-start="219" data-end="262">Do people actually want to be educated?</strong> Or do they simply want the <em data-start="290" data-end="299">results</em> that come from being educated—better jobs, higher status, greater income, or problem-solving abilities?</p>
<p data-start="405" data-end="539" class="">In this article, we explore the psychology behind learning and why <strong data-start="472" data-end="502">education for its own sake</strong> may not be as desirable as we think.</p>
<hr data-start="541" data-end="544" class="" />
<h2 data-start="546" data-end="594" class="">Most People Want the Outcome, Not the Process</h2>
<p data-start="596" data-end="825" class="">Modern marketing teaches us a fundamental truth: <strong data-start="645" data-end="689">People buy the outcome, not the process.</strong> The same concept applies to education. Most individuals don’t actively seek knowledge just for the joy of learning. Instead, they want:</p>
<ul data-start="827" data-end="935">
<li data-start="827" data-end="852" class="">
<p data-start="829" data-end="852" class="">A <strong data-start="831" data-end="844">promotion</strong> at work</p>
</li>
<li data-start="853" data-end="888" class="">
<p data-start="855" data-end="888" class="">To <strong data-start="858" data-end="888">understand a complex issue</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="889" data-end="935" class="">
<p data-start="891" data-end="935" class="">To <strong data-start="894" data-end="910">pass an exam</strong> or qualify for a license</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="937" data-end="1085" class="">Few people are genuinely driven by curiosity alone. For most, the learning process feels like <strong data-start="1031" data-end="1053">a necessary burden</strong>—something to endure, not enjoy.</p>
<hr data-start="1087" data-end="1090" class="" />
<h2 data-start="1092" data-end="1141" class="">Why Learning Feels Hard (And Why That Matters)</h2>
<p data-start="1143" data-end="1203" class="">Let’s be honest: <strong data-start="1160" data-end="1190">directed learning is hard.</strong> It requires:</p>
<ul data-start="1205" data-end="1332">
<li data-start="1205" data-end="1234" class="">
<p data-start="1207" data-end="1234" class=""><strong data-start="1207" data-end="1234">Mental focus and energy</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="1235" data-end="1290" class="">
<p data-start="1237" data-end="1290" class=""><strong data-start="1237" data-end="1262">Reading and retention</strong> of non-entertaining content</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1291" data-end="1332" class="">
<p data-start="1293" data-end="1332" class=""><strong data-start="1293" data-end="1315">Repeating concepts</strong> until they stick</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="1334" data-end="1532" class="">This cognitive labor feels taxing and even “painful” because it <strong data-start="1398" data-end="1446">demands effort without instant gratification</strong>. Our brains are wired to avoid discomfort—and that includes mentally strenuous tasks.</p>
<p data-start="1534" data-end="1624" class="">So unless you&#8217;re naturally interested in a subject, learning often <strong data-start="1601" data-end="1624">feels like a chore.</strong></p>
<hr data-start="1626" data-end="1629" class="" />
<h2 data-start="1631" data-end="1677" class="">The Curious Few: Finding Joy in the Process</h2>
<p data-start="1679" data-end="1852" class="">There <em data-start="1685" data-end="1690">are</em> people who genuinely enjoy learning. They get <strong data-start="1737" data-end="1757">dopamine rewards</strong> from each new piece of understanding. For them, every step in the process brings satisfaction.</p>
<p data-start="1854" data-end="2040" class="">But for the majority of people, education is simply <strong data-start="1906" data-end="1927">a means to an end</strong>. They push through it not because they love it, but because they need the knowledge to achieve something bigger.</p>
<hr data-start="2042" data-end="2045" class="" />
<h2 data-start="2047" data-end="2086" class="">Can We Make Learning More Enjoyable?</h2>
<p data-start="2088" data-end="2145" class="">Education advocates have long tried to make learning fun:</p>
<ul data-start="2147" data-end="2353">
<li data-start="2147" data-end="2209" class="">
<p data-start="2149" data-end="2209" class=""><strong data-start="2149" data-end="2168">Songs and games</strong> that teach through rhythm and repetition</p>
</li>
<li data-start="2210" data-end="2279" class="">
<p data-start="2212" data-end="2279" class=""><strong data-start="2212" data-end="2243">Interactive apps and videos</strong> that simulate real-world experience</p>
</li>
<li data-start="2280" data-end="2353" class="">
<p data-start="2282" data-end="2353" class=""><strong data-start="2282" data-end="2316">Gamified learning environments</strong> that use points, badges, and rewards</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="2355" data-end="2511" class="">These strategies work—<em data-start="2377" data-end="2391">to an extent</em>. But the reality is that <strong data-start="2417" data-end="2458">some subjects will never be enjoyable</strong> to some people, no matter how well they’re packaged.</p>
<p data-start="2513" data-end="2529" class="">And that’s okay.</p>
<hr data-start="2531" data-end="2534" class="" />
<h2 data-start="2536" data-end="2585" class="">The Hard Truth: Education Still Sets You Apart</h2>
<p data-start="2587" data-end="2799" class="">Even if it isn’t fun, education <strong data-start="2619" data-end="2655">remains the great differentiator</strong>. Those who are willing to do the hard work—learn the tough subjects, push through mental fatigue, and apply their knowledge—<strong data-start="2780" data-end="2798">will stand out</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="2801" data-end="2988" class="">With the rise of AI and tools like ChatGPT, factual knowledge is easier than ever to access. But <strong data-start="2898" data-end="2987">processing, interpreting, and applying that knowledge still depends on the individual</strong>.</p>
<hr data-start="2990" data-end="2993" class="" />
<h2 data-start="2995" data-end="3021" class="">So What’s the Takeaway?</h2>
<p data-start="3023" data-end="3098" class="">People don’t necessarily want education.<br data-start="3063" data-end="3066" />They want what education brings.</p>
<p data-start="3100" data-end="3246" class="">But the truth remains: <strong data-start="3123" data-end="3246">Education—especially the hard, boring, painful kind—is still the thing that separates the successful from the stagnant.</strong></p>
<p data-start="3248" data-end="3304" class="">If we want more people to embrace education, we need to:</p>
<ul data-start="3306" data-end="3444">
<li data-start="3306" data-end="3338" class="">
<p data-start="3308" data-end="3338" class=""><strong data-start="3308" data-end="3338">Acknowledge that it’s hard</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="3339" data-end="3380" class="">
<p data-start="3341" data-end="3380" class=""><strong data-start="3341" data-end="3380">Encourage resilience and discipline</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="3381" data-end="3444" class="">
<p data-start="3383" data-end="3444" class=""><strong data-start="3383" data-end="3444">Make learning more accessible, not just more entertaining</strong></p>
</li>
</ul>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h1 data-start="69" data-end="175" class="">Should Schools Teach Life Skills Like Personal Finance? A Closer Look at What Belongs in Early Education</h1>
<p data-start="177" data-end="505" class=""><strong data-start="177" data-end="271">&#8220;Why don’t schools teach real-life skills like balancing a checkbook or doing your taxes?&#8221;</strong><br data-start="271" data-end="274" />It’s a common complaint echoed by many who feel the education system overlooks practical knowledge in favor of abstract concepts. But this argument oversimplifies a deeper issue: the <strong data-start="457" data-end="504">true purpose and limits of formal education</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="507" data-end="696" class="">In this article, we explore the question: <em data-start="549" data-end="640">Should we be teaching life skills in school instead of subjects like geometry or algebra?</em> The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might think.</p>
<hr data-start="698" data-end="701" class="" />
<h2 data-start="703" data-end="761" class="">The Real Question: What Is the Role of Early Education?</h2>
<p data-start="763" data-end="1020" class="">Education is a system built around limited resources—chief among them, <strong data-start="834" data-end="842">time</strong>. With only 6 to 8 hours of instruction per day in most U.S. schools, educators face a difficult task: using that time to help children become <strong data-start="985" data-end="1019">well-rounded, capable thinkers</strong>.</p>
<h3 data-start="1022" data-end="1061" class="">Why Schools Teach Abstract Subjects</h3>
<p data-start="1062" data-end="1187" class="">Subjects like <strong data-start="1076" data-end="1112">math, science, and language arts</strong> are often criticized for being “useless in real life.” But these subjects:</p>
<ul data-start="1189" data-end="1342">
<li data-start="1189" data-end="1222" class="">
<p data-start="1191" data-end="1222" class="">Encourage <strong data-start="1201" data-end="1222">critical thinking</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="1223" data-end="1267" class="">
<p data-start="1225" data-end="1267" class="">Lay the groundwork for specialized careers</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1268" data-end="1342" class="">
<p data-start="1270" data-end="1342" class="">Provide structured exposure to <strong data-start="1301" data-end="1342">concepts students don’t learn at home</strong></p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="1344" data-end="1526" class="">Not every student will become a mathematician, but <strong data-start="1395" data-end="1458">understanding math concepts contributes to logical thinking</strong>, which is applicable in nearly every profession and life situation.</p>
<hr data-start="1528" data-end="1531" class="" />
<h2 data-start="1533" data-end="1574" class="">Why Schools Don’t Focus on Life Skills</h2>
<p data-start="1576" data-end="1741" class="">It’s not that <strong data-start="1590" data-end="1622">life skills aren’t important</strong>—they absolutely are. But schools can’t be expected to teach every important life lesson, especially when many of them:</p>
<ul data-start="1743" data-end="1943">
<li data-start="1743" data-end="1795" class="">
<p data-start="1745" data-end="1795" class=""><strong data-start="1745" data-end="1795">Can be taught at home or through the community</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="1796" data-end="1849" class="">
<p data-start="1798" data-end="1849" class=""><strong data-start="1798" data-end="1829">Require personal motivation</strong> to absorb and apply</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1850" data-end="1943" class="">
<p data-start="1852" data-end="1943" class=""><strong data-start="1852" data-end="1894">Don’t demand institutional instruction</strong> in the same way science labs or advanced math do</p>
</li>
</ul>
<h3 data-start="1945" data-end="2008" class="">Personal Finance, Cooking, and Taxes: Whose Responsibility?</h3>
<p data-start="2009" data-end="2133" class="">While useful, these topics often fall under the category of <strong data-start="2069" data-end="2111">individual or community responsibility</strong>. They can be learned:</p>
<ul data-start="2135" data-end="2256">
<li data-start="2135" data-end="2164" class="">
<p data-start="2137" data-end="2164" class="">From <strong data-start="2142" data-end="2164">parents or mentors</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="2165" data-end="2212" class="">
<p data-start="2167" data-end="2212" class="">Through <strong data-start="2175" data-end="2212">library books or online resources</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="2213" data-end="2256" class="">
<p data-start="2215" data-end="2256" class="">In <strong data-start="2218" data-end="2256">after-school programs or workshops</strong></p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="2258" data-end="2405" class="">Public libraries, online platforms, and community organizations offer <strong data-start="2328" data-end="2356">countless free resources</strong> for financial literacy and personal development.</p>
<hr data-start="2407" data-end="2410" class="" />
<h2 data-start="2412" data-end="2471" class="">The Bigger Picture: Education Is a Shared Responsibility</h2>
<p data-start="2473" data-end="2581" class="">Rather than asking schools to teach everything, we should ask:<br data-start="2535" data-end="2538" /><strong data-start="2538" data-end="2581">How can we all contribute to education?</strong></p>
<ul data-start="2583" data-end="2825">
<li data-start="2583" data-end="2655" class="">
<p data-start="2585" data-end="2655" class=""><strong data-start="2585" data-end="2610">Parents and guardians</strong> play a vital role in passing on life skills.</p>
</li>
<li data-start="2656" data-end="2726" class="">
<p data-start="2658" data-end="2726" class=""><strong data-start="2658" data-end="2679">Community leaders</strong> and organizations can offer targeted programs.</p>
</li>
<li data-start="2727" data-end="2825" class="">
<p data-start="2729" data-end="2825" class=""><strong data-start="2729" data-end="2740">Schools</strong> should continue focusing on foundational skills that are harder to access elsewhere.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="2827" data-end="2926" class="">In truth, <strong data-start="2837" data-end="2869">everyone should be a teacher</strong>—sharing essential knowledge when the opportunity arises.</p>
<hr data-start="2928" data-end="2931" class="" />
<h2 data-start="2933" data-end="2984" class="">Final Thoughts: It&#8217;s Not Either/Or—It’s Both/And</h2>
<p data-start="2986" data-end="3294" class="">The debate about what should be taught in schools is often framed as a zero-sum game: <em data-start="3072" data-end="3094">teach this, not that</em>. But education isn’t about replacing one subject with another. It’s about finding balance and understanding that <strong data-start="3208" data-end="3293">some skills belong in the classroom, while others belong in the home or community</strong>.</p>
<hr data-start="3296" data-end="3299" class="" />
<h3 data-start="3301" data-end="3324" class="">Join the Discussion</h3>

<p data-start="134" data-end="515" class=""><strong data-start="134" data-end="171">What does it mean to be educated?</strong> Most people define education as acquiring knowledge. But education is far more dynamic—it involves developing understanding, building skills, and learning how to apply both in real-world contexts. At <strong data-start="372" data-end="398">The Business Professor</strong>, we believe that true education stems from three core sources: <strong data-start="462" data-end="472">people</strong>, <strong data-start="474" data-end="488">experience</strong>, and <strong data-start="494" data-end="514">formal education</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="517" data-end="651" class="">In this article, we break down what education really means and how these three pillars shape your ability to learn, grow, and succeed.</p>
<hr data-start="653" data-end="656" class="" />
<h2 data-start="658" data-end="720" class="">1. Learning from People: The Social Foundation of Education</h2>
<p data-start="722" data-end="902" class="">Your first and most influential educators are often those closest to you—<strong data-start="795" data-end="834">family, friends, mentors, and peers</strong>. Their values, beliefs, and approaches to knowledge shape your own.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2 data-start="177" data-end="228" class=""><strong data-start="180" data-end="228">Why Soft Skills Matter in Business Education</strong></h2>
<p data-start="230" data-end="759" class="">A fundamental—yet often underemphasized—aspect of business education and professional development is the cultivation of <strong data-start="350" data-end="365">soft skills</strong>. These are the interpersonal and emotional abilities that enable individuals to communicate effectively, navigate social situations, and inspire or influence others. While hard skills like finance, accounting, and marketing are essential for understanding business operations, soft skills are what often determine how well those operations are carried out through collaboration and leadership.</p>
<h3 data-start="761" data-end="802" class=""><strong data-start="765" data-end="802">What Are Soft Skills in Business?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="804" data-end="854" class="">At their core, soft skills involve the ability to:</p>
<ul data-start="856" data-end="1075">
<li data-start="856" data-end="897" class="">
<p data-start="858" data-end="897" class=""><strong data-start="858" data-end="897">Communicate clearly and effectively</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="898" data-end="954" class="">
<p data-start="900" data-end="954" class=""><strong data-start="900" data-end="954">Recognize and respond to emotional and social cues</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="955" data-end="997" class="">
<p data-start="957" data-end="997" class=""><strong data-start="957" data-end="997">Inspire, motivate, and manage people</strong></p>
</li>
<li data-start="998" data-end="1075" class="">
<p data-start="1000" data-end="1075" class=""><strong data-start="1000" data-end="1075">Adapt your behavior or messaging to fit the emotional context of others</strong></p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="1077" data-end="1275" class="">These abilities are particularly important in <strong data-start="1123" data-end="1152">management and leadership</strong>, where understanding what drives or motivates individuals can greatly influence performance, engagement, and team success.</p>
<p data-start="1277" data-end="1657" class="">A great leader recognizes that not everyone is inspired by the same things. Some people respond to authority and clear structure, others to empathy and support. Some may thrive under close guidance, while others perform best with autonomy. The ability to discern these needs and adapt your leadership style accordingly is rooted in emotional intelligence and communication skills.</p>
<h3 data-start="1659" data-end="1702" class=""><strong data-start="1663" data-end="1702">The Power of Emotional Intelligence</strong></h3>
<p data-start="1704" data-end="2022" class="">One key soft skill is <strong data-start="1726" data-end="1757">emotional intelligence (EQ)</strong>—the ability to understand and manage your own emotions while also recognizing and influencing the emotions of others. EQ plays a crucial role in everything from conflict resolution to strategic decision-making, especially in high-stakes or fast-paced environments.</p>
<p data-start="2024" data-end="2393" class="">Consider a basic social dynamic: in a conversation, people are more receptive when they feel understood. Research suggests that individuals are more likely to respond positively when we first show <strong data-start="2221" data-end="2249">genuine interest in them</strong>. Asking thoughtful questions, showing empathy, and demonstrating attentiveness can help build trust and open the door for meaningful exchanges.</p>
<p data-start="2395" data-end="2677" class="">This dynamic applies across all types of professional relationships—whether peer-to-peer, subordinate-to-supervisor, or supervisor-to-subordinate. Building rapport starts with understanding and validating the other person, which often leads to mutual respect and interest in return.</p>
<h3 data-start="2679" data-end="2726" class=""><strong data-start="2683" data-end="2726">Why This Belongs in Business Classrooms</strong></h3>
<p data-start="2728" data-end="3056" class="">Despite the clear value of soft skills, business education often focuses heavily on technical knowledge. Fields like <strong data-start="2845" data-end="2879">finance, marketing, accounting</strong>, and <strong data-start="2885" data-end="2899">operations</strong> are considered core subjects—and rightly so. However, <strong data-start="2954" data-end="3056">shouldn’t communication, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal psychology be just as integral?</strong></p>
<p data-start="3058" data-end="3396" class="">Soft skills, after all, come from disciplines such as <strong data-start="3112" data-end="3137">psychology, sociology</strong>, and <strong data-start="3143" data-end="3168">communication studies</strong>—fields that are sometimes treated as peripheral in traditional business programs. But if the goal of business education is to prepare students for real-world success, then these skills should no longer be optional or secondary.</p>
<p data-start="3398" data-end="3695" class="">Effective leadership, successful negotiation, productive teamwork, and strong client relationships all hinge on how well individuals understand and interact with others. These are competencies that can and should be <strong data-start="3614" data-end="3650">taught, practiced, and evaluated</strong> just like balance sheets or marketing plans.</p>
<hr data-start="3697" data-end="3700" class="" />
<h3 data-start="3702" data-end="3728" class=""><strong data-start="3706" data-end="3728">What Do You Think?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="3730" data-end="3912" class="">To what extent should soft skills—like emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication, and behavioral awareness—be embedded in business education alongside traditional subjects?</p>
<p data-start="3914" data-end="4083" class="">We’d love to hear your thoughts. Join the conversation by leaving a comment or starting a discussion at <strong data-start="4018" data-end="4082"><a data-start="4020" data-end="4080" rel="noopener" target="_new" class="" href="https://thebusinessprofessor.com">TheBusinessProfessor.com</a></strong>.</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2 data-start="128" data-end="223" class=""><strong data-start="131" data-end="223">Who Should Teach College Courses: PhDs, Professional Practitioners, or Trained Teachers?</strong></h2>
<p data-start="225" data-end="521" class="">In a recent video, we explored whether college professors are truly teachers and noted that most professors have little or no formal training in teaching methods. This naturally leads us to a broader and timely question: <strong data-start="446" data-end="521">Whom should colleges and universities be hiring to teach their classes?</strong></p>
<p data-start="523" data-end="794" class="">Should the focus be on hiring <strong data-start="553" data-end="561">PhDs</strong>, who are steeped in academic research? Should it be on <strong data-start="617" data-end="647">professional practitioners</strong> with real-world experience? Or should the emphasis be placed on <strong data-start="712" data-end="733">trained educators</strong> who specialize in effective teaching and student engagement?</p>
<h3 data-start="796" data-end="832" class=""><strong data-start="800" data-end="832">Higher Education Is Changing</strong></h3>
<p data-start="834" data-end="1280" class="">The landscape of higher education is evolving rapidly. Technological advancements, the rise of online learning, and the growing accessibility of information have disrupted traditional education models. In the past, professors were the gatekeepers of knowledge—standing at the front of a lecture hall and disseminating information to students. Today, information is everywhere. Students no longer rely solely on professors for access to knowledge.</p>
<p data-start="1282" data-end="1352" class="">So, what are students actually paying for when they enroll in college?</p>
<p data-start="1354" data-end="1714" class="">Increasingly, they are not buying <strong data-start="1388" data-end="1401">knowledge</strong> per se, but rather a <strong data-start="1423" data-end="1440">certification</strong>—proof that they have completed a course of study or mastered a subject. This means colleges and universities must rethink how they deliver value. It&#8217;s no longer just about delivering lectures—it&#8217;s about ensuring students truly understand and can apply what they’ve learned.</p>
<h3 data-start="1716" data-end="1771" class=""><strong data-start="1720" data-end="1771">From Knowledge Delivery to Knowledge Assessment</strong></h3>
<p data-start="1773" data-end="2103" class="">With knowledge so easily accessible, the role of the university is shifting from being a <strong data-start="1862" data-end="1889">provider of information</strong> to becoming a <strong data-start="1904" data-end="1934">validator of understanding</strong>. Assessment is now at the core of the educational value proposition. Schools must ensure that students are acquiring the skills and knowledge they claim to be learning.</p>
<p data-start="2105" data-end="2285" class="">This shift brings us back to the question of staffing. If universities are focusing more on assessment and student learning outcomes, <strong data-start="2239" data-end="2285">who is best equipped to lead this process?</strong></p>
<h3 data-start="2287" data-end="2339" class=""><strong data-start="2291" data-end="2339">Three Types of Candidates for Teaching Roles</strong></h3>
<p data-start="2341" data-end="2453" class="">Let’s break down the three primary categories of individuals universities typically consider for teaching roles:</p>
<h4 data-start="2455" data-end="2494" class="">1. <strong data-start="2463" data-end="2494">PhDs (Academic Researchers)</strong></h4>
<p data-start="2495" data-end="2798" class="">These individuals have a deep understanding of their subject areas and often contribute to the advancement of knowledge through research. However, many lack formal training in education or teaching methods. In research institutions, their role often includes both teaching and publishing scholarly work.</p>
<h4 data-start="2800" data-end="2838" class="">2. <strong data-start="2808" data-end="2838">Professional Practitioners</strong></h4>
<p data-start="2839" data-end="3108" class="">Practitioners bring valuable real-world experience to the classroom. They can provide practical insights and examples that enrich students’ learning. However, they may also lack teaching experience or the ability to translate their expertise into effective instruction.</p>
<h4 data-start="3110" data-end="3157" class="">3. <strong data-start="3118" data-end="3157">Trained Teachers (Pedagogy Experts)</strong></h4>
<p data-start="3158" data-end="3423" class="">These individuals are trained specifically in how to teach. They understand how students learn, how to design effective assessments, and how to manage a classroom. However, they may lack the deep, specialized content knowledge that a PhD or practitioner might have.</p>
<h3 data-start="3425" data-end="3461" class=""><strong data-start="3429" data-end="3461">A Shifting Value Proposition</strong></h3>
<p data-start="3463" data-end="3711" class="">Many colleges today are <strong data-start="3487" data-end="3507">teaching-focused</strong> institutions rather than research institutions. Yet, they often still expect faculty to maintain research productivity, even though the infrastructure and funding to support such research may be limited.</p>
<p data-start="3713" data-end="3878" class="">This raises a practical concern: if teaching is the primary value that institutions provide to students, should more of their hiring decisions reflect that priority?</p>
<h3 data-start="3880" data-end="3907" class=""><strong data-start="3884" data-end="3907">Time for a Rethink?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="3909" data-end="4006" class="">Given the changing nature of higher education, should institutions prioritize hiring faculty who:</p>
<ul data-start="4008" data-end="4208">
<li data-start="4008" data-end="4053" class="">
<p data-start="4010" data-end="4053" class="">Are <strong data-start="4014" data-end="4052">experts in pedagogy and assessment</strong>?</p>
</li>
<li data-start="4054" data-end="4124" class="">
<p data-start="4056" data-end="4124" class="">Have <strong data-start="4061" data-end="4086">real-world experience</strong> relevant to students’ future careers?</p>
</li>
<li data-start="4125" data-end="4208" class="">
<p data-start="4127" data-end="4208" class="">Possess <strong data-start="4135" data-end="4168">academic research credentials</strong>, even if they lack teaching experience?</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="4210" data-end="4461" class="">Or should schools look for a balance among these traits? Perhaps the future professoriate will include a more diverse mix of backgrounds—blending researchers, practitioners, and skilled educators—each contributing uniquely to the academic environment.</p>
<hr data-start="4463" data-end="4466" class="" />
<h3 data-start="4468" data-end="4497" class=""><strong data-start="4472" data-end="4497">Join the Conversation</strong></h3>
<p data-start="4499" data-end="4727" class="">What do you think? Should universities focus more on hiring trained teachers rather than research experts or industry professionals? Or should each institution define its staffing approach based on its mission and student needs?</p>
<p data-start="4729" data-end="4902" class="">We’d love to hear your perspective. 				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><h2 data-start="140" data-end="179" class=""><strong data-start="143" data-end="179">Are College Professors Teachers?</strong></h2>
<p data-start="181" data-end="458" class="">When we think of a college professor, the image that often comes to mind is someone standing at the front of a classroom, delivering lectures to a group of students. This traditional view paints professors primarily as teachers. But is that really the core of their role today?</p>
<p data-start="460" data-end="779" class="">The answer is more complex than many might think. The duties and responsibilities of college professors vary widely depending on the institution, department, and specific position held. While some professors do spend most of their time teaching, others focus heavily on research, clinical work, or administrative tasks.</p>
<h3 data-start="781" data-end="820" class=""><strong data-start="785" data-end="820">The Varying Roles of Professors</strong></h3>
<p data-start="822" data-end="889" class="">Professors often fall into one or more of the following categories:</p>
<ul data-start="891" data-end="1410">
<li data-start="891" data-end="1022" class="">
<p data-start="893" data-end="1022" class=""><strong data-start="893" data-end="924">Research-focused professors</strong> may spend most of their time conducting studies, publishing work, and supervising PhD candidates.</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1023" data-end="1141" class="">
<p data-start="1025" data-end="1141" class=""><strong data-start="1025" data-end="1048">Clinical professors</strong> often run or manage clinical centers and may spend much of their time outside the classroom.</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1142" data-end="1266" class="">
<p data-start="1144" data-end="1266" class=""><strong data-start="1144" data-end="1173">Administrative professors</strong> might hold leadership positions within the institution and rarely teach or conduct research.</p>
</li>
<li data-start="1267" data-end="1410" class="">
<p data-start="1269" data-end="1410" class=""><strong data-start="1269" data-end="1300">Teaching-focused professors</strong> primarily lead classroom instruction and advise or mentor students, playing a more traditional educator role.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="1412" data-end="1883" class="">Despite these diverse roles, the general public often assumes that professors are mainly educators. Historically, professors were indeed seen as the primary conveyors of knowledge, lecturing to large groups and sharing insights from their field. But the way we access and consume information has changed significantly. Today, knowledge is available everywhere—online, in books, and through digital platforms. This shift has impacted the professor’s role in the classroom.</p>
<h3 data-start="1885" data-end="1928" class=""><strong data-start="1889" data-end="1928">Teaching Without Teaching Training?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="1930" data-end="2067" class="">Here lies an important point: while professors may be experts in their field, most have little to no formal training in how to <strong data-start="2057" data-end="2066">teach</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="2069" data-end="2453" class="">There&#8217;s an underlying assumption in academia that deep subject-matter knowledge naturally translates into effective teaching. However, being an expert and being an effective educator are not the same. Teaching requires its own set of skills—communication, engagement, curriculum design, and understanding of pedagogy. Yet, very few professors are ever formally trained in these areas.</p>
<p data-start="2455" data-end="2467" class="">Why is that?</p>
<p data-start="2469" data-end="2859" class="">Earning the credentials required to become a college professor already demands a significant time and energy investment. Most professors must earn a PhD or a master’s degree, which can take many years of study and research. Adding a teaching certification or pedagogical training on top of that would make the path to becoming a professor even more demanding—both in terms of time and cost.</p>
<p data-start="2861" data-end="3157" class="">Additionally, professors often earn less than what professionals with similar educational levels make in the private sector. Requiring additional qualifications may make it even more difficult to attract individuals to academic careers, especially when the financial incentives are already lower.</p>
<h3 data-start="3159" data-end="3189" class=""><strong data-start="3163" data-end="3189">Is It Time for Change?</strong></h3>
<p data-start="3191" data-end="3305" class="">So, here’s the question: <strong data-start="3216" data-end="3305">Should college professors be required to undergo formal training in teaching methods?</strong></p>
<ul data-start="3307" data-end="3684">
<li data-start="3307" data-end="3410" class="">
<p data-start="3309" data-end="3410" class="">Is it reasonable to expect professors to complete education coursework before being allowed to teach?</p>
</li>
<li data-start="3411" data-end="3536" class="">
<p data-start="3413" data-end="3536" class="">Should pedagogy be integrated into graduate programs so future professors are trained both as researchers and as educators?</p>
</li>
<li data-start="3537" data-end="3684" class="">
<p data-start="3539" data-end="3684" class="">Or, is the role of the professor evolving in ways that make traditional teaching less central, and we need to adapt our expectations accordingly?</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="3686" data-end="3968" class="">These are important questions to consider, especially as higher education continues to evolve in the digital age. With knowledge being so accessible, the value a professor adds in the classroom becomes more about how they guide, engage, and inspire students—not just what they know.</p>
<hr data-start="3970" data-end="3973" class="" />
<h3 data-start="3975" data-end="4004" class=""><strong data-start="3979" data-end="4004">Join the Conversation</strong></h3>
<p data-start="4006" data-end="4139" class="">We’d love to hear your thoughts. Should professors be required to receive formal teaching training? Is deep subject knowledge enough?</p>

				<div class="et_pb_text_inner"><p data-start="0" data-end="68" class=""><strong data-start="0" data-end="68">Do We Really Need So Many Colleges and Universities in the U.S.?</strong></p>
<p data-start="70" data-end="434" class="">The United States is home to over 5,000 colleges and universities—including everything from community colleges and liberal arts institutions to major research universities and graduate schools. But in an era of skyrocketing tuition, rising student debt, and evolving workforce demands, a key question emerges: <em data-start="380" data-end="434">Do we actually need this many academic institutions?</em></p>
<p data-start="436" data-end="801" class="">In a recent lecture featured on <strong data-start="468" data-end="496">TheBusinessProfessor.com</strong>, the case is made that while <strong data-start="526" data-end="564">higher education still holds value</strong>, the system has grown bloated, misaligned, and in many cases inefficient. What we may need now, more than ever, is a <strong data-start="682" data-end="722">more intentional, balanced structure</strong>—one that better reflects the goals of students and the needs of the workforce.</p>
<hr data-start="803" data-end="806" class="" />
<h3 data-start="808" data-end="858" class=""></h3>
<h3 data-start="808" data-end="858" class="">College: From Elite Credential to Default Path</h3>
<p data-start="860" data-end="1235" class="">Historically, college was a privilege and a mark of distinction. With fewer institutions and stricter standards, a four-year degree served as a <strong data-start="1004" data-end="1050">powerful signal of capability and ambition</strong>. But as college enrollment expanded—now with roughly 50% of high school graduates attending college immediately—degrees became more of a <strong data-start="1188" data-end="1212">baseline expectation</strong> than a differentiator.</p>
<p data-start="1237" data-end="1573" class="">The shift has transformed the nature of college. Many students now see it as a <strong data-start="1316" data-end="1347">continuation of high school</strong>—grades 13 through 16—rather than an elevated academic pursuit. As a result, motivation has waned, academic rigor has declined in many programs, and college has become less about learning and more about just “getting through.”</p>
<hr data-start="1575" data-end="1578" class="" />
<h3 data-start="1580" data-end="1627" class=""></h3>
<h3 data-start="1580" data-end="1627" class="">A Decline in Academic Rigor and Consistency</h3>
<p data-start="1629" data-end="2002" class="">One challenge in the current system is the <strong data-start="1672" data-end="1703">wide variability in quality</strong> between institutions. The academic rigor and reputation of one college may differ dramatically from another, even though both confer similar degrees. This has led to a de facto <strong data-start="1881" data-end="1916">class system among universities</strong>, where certain schools open doors while others fail to move the needle for graduates.</p>
<p data-start="2004" data-end="2364" class="">At the same time, many institutions hire professors with PhDs who may be better suited for research than for teaching the <strong data-start="2126" data-end="2159">practical, job-related skills</strong> students actually need. Ironically, these institutions are often <strong data-start="2225" data-end="2276">not even structured to support serious research</strong>, creating a mismatch between faculty expertise, student needs, and institutional goals.</p>
<hr data-start="2366" data-end="2369" class="" />
<h3 data-start="2371" data-end="2409" class=""></h3>
<h3 data-start="2371" data-end="2409" class="">A Case for More Technical Colleges</h3>
<p data-start="2411" data-end="2500" class="">So, do we need all 5,000+ institutions? Probably not—at least, not in their current form.</p>
<p data-start="2502" data-end="2787" class="">What we <em data-start="2510" data-end="2514">do</em> need, argues the speaker, is <strong data-start="2544" data-end="2590">more technical and career-focused colleges</strong>. These schools, typically more affordable, emphasize <strong data-start="2644" data-end="2674">specific skill development</strong> and prepare students directly for career paths in areas like healthcare, trades, IT, and advanced manufacturing.</p>
<p data-start="2789" data-end="3087" class="">For many students, this would be a better investment than a generalized four-year degree—one that leaves them with <strong data-start="2904" data-end="2920">student debt</strong> but few job prospects. Employers, too, would benefit from a workforce with <strong data-start="2996" data-end="3034">measurable, job-ready competencies</strong> instead of vague diplomas and underdeveloped skills.</p>
<hr data-start="3089" data-end="3092" class="" />
<h3 data-start="3094" data-end="3128" class=""></h3>
<h3 data-start="3094" data-end="3128" class="">Rethinking the Employer’s Role</h3>
<p data-start="3130" data-end="3458" class="">A significant shift must also occur in how <strong data-start="3173" data-end="3202">employers value education</strong>. The traditional mindset—that only a four-year degree can prepare someone for a professional role—needs to evolve. Employers must be willing to recognize <strong data-start="3357" data-end="3435">certifications, associate degrees, apprenticeships, and practical training</strong> as viable credentials.</p>
<p data-start="3460" data-end="3575" class="">Until then, students will continue to chase expensive four-year degrees simply to meet outdated job qualifications.</p>
<hr data-start="3577" data-end="3580" class="" />
<h3 data-start="3582" data-end="3617" class=""></h3>
<h3 data-start="3582" data-end="3617" class="">The Value of Being Well-Rounded</h3>
<p data-start="3619" data-end="3996" class="">That said, the speaker doesn’t advocate eliminating four-year colleges altogether. There is still enormous value in institutions that support <strong data-start="3761" data-end="3834">intellectual exploration, personal development, and critical thinking</strong>. Some students attend college not just for a job, but to <strong data-start="3892" data-end="3915">grow as individuals</strong>, to explore the liberal arts, or to prepare for leadership and innovation roles.</p>
<p data-start="3998" data-end="4023" class="">We need <strong data-start="4006" data-end="4022">both systems</strong>:</p>
<ul data-start="4025" data-end="4149">
<li data-start="4025" data-end="4078" class="">
<p data-start="4027" data-end="4078" class=""><strong data-start="4027" data-end="4049">Technical colleges</strong> to train a skilled workforce</p>
</li>
<li data-start="4079" data-end="4149" class="">
<p data-start="4081" data-end="4149" class=""><strong data-start="4081" data-end="4097">Universities</strong> to develop thinkers, leaders, and lifelong learners</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p data-start="4151" data-end="4289" class="">But we need to right-size them—to balance enrollment, reduce waste, and <strong data-start="4223" data-end="4288">align the educational journey with the student’s actual goals</strong>.</p>
<hr data-start="4291" data-end="4294" class="" />
<h3 data-start="4296" data-end="4315" class=""></h3>
<h3 data-start="4296" data-end="4315" class="">The Bottom Line</h3>
<p data-start="4317" data-end="4539" class="">The U.S. doesn’t necessarily need fewer colleges—but it <strong data-start="4373" data-end="4424">needs the right colleges for the right purposes</strong>. And we need to acknowledge that college, while still valuable, <strong data-start="4489" data-end="4538">isn’t always the best or only path to success</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="4541" data-end="4716" class="">What’s required now is a fundamental <strong data-start="4578" data-end="4616">rethinking of our education system</strong>—not just from students and families, but from employers, policymakers, and institutions themselves.</p>
