She is the first Black woman to shoot the cover of Fortune magazine.

Lauri is the author of two acclaimed books; Flag:An American Story (2001) and Flag International (2008). She was the commissioned portrait photographer for the book INSPIRATION: Portraits of Black Women Changing Our World (2012).

Lauri is the Publisher & Editor in Chief of the online publication Nomads Magazine. She is also a contributing writer for The Huffington Post and her essays have also appeared in The Wall Street Journal.com and U.S.A Today.com.

Editorially his work has appeared in virtually every major general interest publication in the world. Gerd Ludwig is a National Geographic photographer who is best known for his long-term work documenting the impact of the Chernobyl nuclear accident in the former Soviet Union. This personal project has allowed him to the tell the story of the human toll on the people decades after the initial, dramatic events of the accident itself. For decades, he has also been working on assignments focusing on Russia and Eastern Europe, which has held a personal fascination for him. His book, Broken Empire: After the Fall of the USSR is an incredible visual telling of a country struggling to redefine itself.

He has recently released an iPad App which showcases his work on Chernobyl with still, video and audio commentary. The Long Shadow of Chernobyl provides a unique method for telling the 25-years story of the accident and its long term impact on a country and a people.

While studying at the International Center of Photography, she began a project documenting veterans impacted by the United States' Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. As you can see below, I have a new podcast episode up, but the feed is broken yet again. I'm trying to resolve these issues, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to request someone's help in trying to resolve these long-standing issues. I'm know enough about this web stuff to get myself in trouble and with these repeated issues with Feedburner, I'd have pulled out all my hair if I hadn't already lost it all. There is lot to be said for simplicity. This image is like many dawn or sunset images that are made everyday, but because of a small and simple accent the nearly pristine quality of the water and sky become that much more impactful. With the presence of the negative space, in the figure of the man, the contrast becomes significantly more dramatic. Very cool shot.

Chris Porsz is an amateur photographer who has been documenting his community of Peterborough, England as a street photographer. His candid images of strangers document a particular time in the life of a town and its people, which is made all the more poignant by his recent rediscovery of these same subjects. His then and now portraits reveal not only how people have changed, but how the town has as well. Working as a full-time paramedic, he has created all of his images using his personal time, making him an a great example of how a photographer can make significant work even without becoming a "professional. This is an image that breaks a lot of rules. It doesn't have a solid black. It suffers from overexposure and flare and a lack of contrast and color saturation. Yet, it works and that's what I love about it. It has a wonderful feel to it and it's a great moment. There are other images that are more technically "perfect" but are empty. This is anything but.

It's a wonderful example how paying attention to the light itself can lead one to make an image that most people would miss entirely. Great images are not just in front of us at eye-level.

Feed Issues

Not only has subscribing been hampered but the archive available through the iTunes store has been severely limited to now only 6 episodes out of over 90 shows. Anthony Barboza is a self-taught artist, photographer, writer and historian He began his photographic career in 1964 with the Kamoinge Workshop. In 1969 he opened a commercial photo studio in New York City and has continued to do advertising and editorial spreads for magazines throughout the past three decades. Barboza has lectured at the International Center of Photography, Oberlin College, Ohio Univ., Museum of School of Fine Arts of Boston, Lowell Univ., Rochester Institute of Tech., Rhode Island School of Design, Wadsworth Antheneum of Hartford and was a guest instructor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. He was the recipient of grants for photography from the New York State Council of the Arts in 1974 and 1976; the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980; and NYFA-New York Foundation for the Arts in 2002. After graduating from the University of the Pacific with a BA in Fine Art, he studied Photography at Art Center College of Design. In 1980 Bruce moved to Japan where he is a well known commercial photographer and filmmaker. He is most known for the Oyako project, which has provided him the opportunity to photograph Japanese parents and their children, to the point that it's become a national event. Stephan Oberhoff is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer and composer living in Los Angeles, CA. Initially, Stephan came to the US in 1991 to study Jazz at the prestiguous Grove School of Music in Van Nuys, California. The planned original 1-year period of musical sabbatical and break from cranking out commercials and documentary film scores, however, expanded into Stephan's -now 18 year- stay in L.A.

During the earlier segment of his career in Germany as a composer and producer of numerous TV commercials and documentary film scores, he became Co-recipient of several Commercial and Documentary Awards. New Year! New Podcast! New Format! Focus Ring is Back!

The Candid Frame Photography podcast is a member is The Photocast Network, a loose confederation of podcasts both in English, Spanish and German, all on the topic of photography. It's a great resource for some interesting and engaging shows on our favorite pastime.

We even have our own podcast, but the production of this had been pretty infrequent. So, now I've brought it back with a new format and a new idea.

Four photographers join the conversation with two of their own images to discuss a single topic. I think it will provide an opportunity to turn the conversation from equipment and software, to....wait for it...photographs. What a concept!

The first episode focus on "Shadow and Light" and brings together Jeff Curto (History of Photography & Lens Position), Chris Marquardt (Tips from the Top Floor), Martin Bailey and myself, Ibarionex Perello (The Candid Frame). If we get a good response to the show and format, I intend to continue producing the program once a month. Let me know what you think.

The Candid Frame #84 - Stephen Marc

Stephen Marc, Olympus Visionary photographer and art professor at Arizona State University’s Herberger College of Fine Arts, is recognized for his unique and powerful photographic montages that explore the African Diaspora. His images combine family snapshots, antique photographs and images from his own extensive body of photographic work. The dual themes of all his work are an attempt to tell both his personal story and the story of a culture.

Marc’s current project, Passage on the Underground Railroad, explores North America’s Underground Railroad, which moved escaped slaves to freedom. For over four years, he took more than 30,000 photographs of people and places in 21 states and Canada. The project culminated in a book and exhibition of Marc’s Underground Railroad artwork. The Candid Frame #83 - Darryl Sivad

Darryl Sivad picked up his first camera in high school. Richard Avedon invited Sivad to join him in New York City for a rare opportunity – a two-year internship. A delay in transitioning from Detroit to New York cost him that opportunity. However, highly regarded photographer Anthony Barboza did engage Sivad as an assistant.

It was here that Sivad was able to refine his own vision as a photographer. Sivad’s passion for photography continues alongside his career as an actor/writer. His images can also be seen in the following publications Black: A Celebration of Culture; I Shook Up the World; Saturday Night/Sunday Morning and Black Renaissance/Black Noire. Sivad has exhibited nationally including most recently at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, the Leica Gallery, the Wadsworth Atheneum of Art, The African American Museum in Philadelphia, PA and the California African American Museum. His work is also in the permanent collections of the Museum of the African Diaspora and the Smithsonian Institute.

Sivad’s film and television career has included being a series regular, recurring and guest star on Friends, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The Jamie Foxx Show, ER, The Naked Truth, NYPD Blue, Two and a Half Men, Talkin’ Dirty After Dark, Fear of a Black Hat and A Cinderella Story.
